What’s Inside?
Institute of Certified Professional Managers Spring 2012
The familiar adage ―nothing is constant in the world except change‖
could not be more true for ICPM. Already in 2012, ICPM has imple-
mented changes in staffing and, in accordance with ICPM’s 2011 Job
Task Analysis, it is initiating changes to ICPM’s professional standards
and learning programs. More details about these changes follow . . .
Jonathan Scott Lutz, MET joined the ICPM
staff in January in the role of Instructional De-
signer. Jonathan’s experience in technology sys-
tems, applications, and implementation, teamed
with his education in multimedia, web design and
educational technology are well suited to his first
assignment—to develop and administer a new line
of eLearning programs for ICPM. You can contact
Jonathan at 540-568-4571 or [email protected].
Kimberley Foreman, MSA, CPA assumed the
position of JMU/ICPM Liaison as of April 1st.
Kimberley is the Associate Dean for Human Re-
sources & Administration in the JMU College of
Business and a former lecturer for the JMU
School of Accounting. Her 15-year longevity with
JMU will enable her to manage the JMU/ICPM
relationship. Kim is a JMU alumnus with under-
graduate and graduate degrees in Accounting.
Lynn S. Powell, CM, MBA, former ICPM Di-
rector, assumed the position of Executive Director
on October 1st, replacing Dr. Robert Reid. Lynn
has served as ICPM’s Director for over 10 years
and brings over 30 years of administrative man-
agement and program development experience to
the job. Lynn is a JMU alumnus. You can contact
Lynn at 540-568-3042 or [email protected].

Professional standards for certification originate
from a Job Task Analysis (JTA). Essentially, a
JTA is a search for truth. It is a systematic and
comprehensive study that seeks to determine the
tasks that members of a profession perform and
the corresponding skills and abilities required to
perform the profession competently. Certifying
bodies, like ICPM, use the results of JTA studies to
set standards for the profession and develop certifi-
cation exams and related learning programs.
ICPM has completed three JTA studies for the management profession since the year 2000.
The most recent analysis was completed in July 2011 with the assistance of The Caviart
Group, LLC, specialists in the development and administration of certification testing, and a
diverse team of management subject matter experts (see photo above).
A total of 1,100 management professionals, including many Certified Managers, participated
in the 2011 study, in which survey respondents rated the relevance and importance of nearly
200 managerial tasks, skills and abilities. The results of the study presented a number of
changes to CM certification standards, which are being used to revise the CM exams.
The JTA process is in keeping with ICPM’s mission of enhancing the competency and profes-
sionalism of managers through certification. ICPM looks forward to sharing more details
about the rollout of new exams and related learning products in the months ahead via the
ICPM website, Management World and The Certified Letter. Stay tuned!

Changes in Professional Standards
Changes in Learning Programs
The 2011 JTA also precipitated changes to
ICPM’s learning programs, which will take
the form of an all new eLearning system and
eLearning programs. Both the rising popular-
ity of eLearning in education over the past
several years and the benefits of eLearning ,
make it the format of choice for busy manag-
ers. A few of the benefits include:
Self-paced learning. Learners are able to
view content at their own pace, meaning the
learner can easily navigate through content at
a pace that is appropriate for them. In an
eLearning environment instruction is never
too fast or too slow, the pace is determined by
the learner based on his/her own comfort lev-
el.
Self-directed learning. In eLearning, the
learner is able to move through the training
freely. Learners are given the option to
choose modules or topics in any sequence.
This allows learners to focus on topics that
are most important to them and to review
previously completed modules or topics., as
needed.
10:20 AM4/20/2012 4/20/201233
The Certified Letter Page 3
Learning Engagement. Every learner has a
different learning style, and eLearning caters
to a variety of styles through the use of text,
graphics, sound, animation, and interactivity.
Learners who struggle with training in a tradi-
tional classroom, often find eLearning leads to
increased retention and comprehension due
to increased learning engagement.
Flexibility. One of the most notable benefits
of eLearning is the ease and speed of access
for the learner. Learners can get started im-
mediately after purchasing a course without
waiting for shipped materials to arrive. In ad-
dition, the eLearning system can be accessed
any time of day and from any location using a
computer or tablet with an internet connec-
tion. This provides learners with the oppor-
tunity to engage in learning whenever and
wherever it is most convenient for them.
While there are a number of benefits associat-
ed with eLearning, the main goals of the ICPM
eLearning system are convenience and en-
gagement. 24/7 access to ICPM’s eLearning
system will make it convenient for applicants
to learn in a flexible format and at locations
that allow them to be most productive. The
multi-media based content will support a high
level of engagement and facilitate retention.
Stay tuned for more details on ICPM’s eLearn-
ing system as programs are rolled out in 2012
and 2013.

II. From the Executive Director, Lynn S. Powell, CM
Happy Spring!
Where has the first quar-
ter of 2012 gone? And,
what is on the horizon
for the remaining quar-
ters of 2012?
With so much to tell, one
thing is certain; ICPM is
not standing still! In fact, CM recognition has
gone viral with CM certificants now in over
60 countries worldwide.
Additionally, new certification exams and
eLearning programs are in progress to rollout
in 2012 and 2013, supported by an all new
LMS and test engine, currently under de-
velopment. New staff members are bringing
forth new ideas and energy to ICPM. And, a
new 5-year strategic plan will get underway in
June when the ICPM Board of Regents meets
in Northern, Virginia, USA.
Despite global economic volatility, interest in
the CM certification continues to be strong—
both domestically and internationally. CM
expansion in Africa and Indonesia is
beginning to take hold, while CM certification
in the Middle East has become a permanent
fixture of corporate professional development
programs.
Thanks to social media, ICPM’s CM Group
on Linkedin has surpassed 12,750 mem-
bers, reaching out to all North American
states, India, UK, China, Canada, Saudi Ara-
bia, Australia, the Netherlands, UAE, and
many more locations around the world. If you
have not already joined the CM Group, I en-
courage you to do so and take part in a di-
verse array of management discussions.
I hope the growth of CM certification has you
excited about your own CM credential. Possi-
bly you are looking for an opportunity to get

involved in the Institute’s work to further the man-
agement profession? If so, I personally invite you to
consider joining the CM Advisory Council
(described in detail later in the newsletter.) It’s the
perfect opportunity to share your professional ex-
pertise and lend support to the management pro-
fession. Plus, Certified Managers will earn profes-
sional development credit for 2012 recertification.
In 2012, the ICPM Board of Re-
gents will
engage in
the strategic
p l a n n i n g
process to
set direction
for ICPM in
the form of
a 5-year,
long range
plan. Dur-
ing the process, Regents will re-
view ICPM’s mission, vision, and
value statements to determine
what changes need to be made to
keep pace with an ever changing
business environment. Regents
will evaluate the CM program,
analyze customer feedback and
review operational processes to
ensure the needs of current and
potential customers are being
met, and in a cost effective man-
ner. Additionally, Regents will
consider web, social media, and
other public forms of communi-
cation to assess their effective-
ness in growing the ―CM‖ brand
globally. It is no easy job to im-
prove upon the progress made
over the past 38 years to establish
ICPM as a leader in the certifica-
tion industry and the manage-
ment profession. The ICPM
Board of Regents looks forward
to this challenge and to sharing
the results of its strategic plan-
ning efforts with you in the next
ICPM newsletter.

butions made to enhance or develop an individual manager, the man-
agement profession, or the CM certification.
Nominations are currently being accepted by ICPM. Just complete a
CM Awards Nomination Form and obtain two supporting references.
Nomination forms can be submitted to ICPM by email
([email protected]) or fax (540-801-8650) before May 15, 2012.

a commitment to management education, professionalism in management, and/or public support of the
CM certification.

Call for Certified Manager Award Nominations
Continuing the legacy of the Administrative Management Society (AMS), ICPM awarded four AMS Schol-
arships in 2012. Scholarship recipients are selected by committee based on eligibility, business/
professional support and personal motivation for obtaining CM certification. Each scholarship provides
partial funding for CM certification.
AMS was the founding sponsor of the Certified Administrative Manager (C.A.M.) certification, an ad-
vanced level professional credential for administrative managers. ICPM administered the C.A.M. from
1995-2004. In December 2007 the AMS Foundation terminated operations and left funds to ICPM to
continue AMS’ work in management education. Recipients of the 2012 scholarships include:

Telecommunication Managers at CYTA Work Toward CM Certification
The island of Cyprus—located in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea just east of
Greece—is gaining notoriety by developing its human resources. The 3rd CM certi-
fication program in Cyprus since 2011 is in progress under the corporate sponsor-
ship of CYTA, a semi-government organization established with the aim of provid-
ing, maintaining and developing a comprehensive telecommunications service,
both nationally and internationally. CYTA is the leading provider of integrated elec-
tronic communications services in Cyprus.
Making the best of the island’s geographical location, CYTA has developed an ex-
tensive submarine fiber optic cable network linking Cyprus with neighboring coun-
tries such as Greece, Israel, Syria, Lebanon and Egypt and, by extension, with the
rest of the world. At the same time, CYTA has also developed a satellite earth station, establishing Cyprus
as a regional telecommunications hub.
As the leading technology company in Cyprus, CYTA places great emphasis on the development of its hu-
man resources, which play a critical role in its success. Within this context, and in order to evaluate the
CM certification program, CYTA sent three of its officers to participate in and evaluate the first open CM
Program administered by ICPM’s Authorized Training Partner, Innovage Consulting. Following a positive
evaluation, CYTA proceeded with hosting its first in-house CM Program for seventeen CYTA managers.
The CM Program is currently in progress and all seventeen managers have passed one of three CM certifi-
cation exams.
Mr. Photios Savvides, CEO of CYTA (pictured above), had this to say,
―CYTA offers the very best in training and tools to its human capital in or-
der to excel in its challenges and competition. The CM certification pro-
gram was chosen following a thorough evaluation of a CM pilot program.
We sincerely feel that the CM Program will be both useful and beneficial to
our managers.‖

Invitation to Join the CM Advisory Council
Would you like to be part of ICPM’s development team? Would you like to contribute to the continuous
improvement of the CM certification? Would you like to assist in the future development of CMs? If so,
ICPM invites you to consider participating on its NEW CM Advisory Council.
The purpose of the CM Advisory Council is to involve CMs and other management experts in the de-
velopment and review of ICPM’s certification exams and learning products. The Council also prepares
interested candidates for future service on the ICPM Board of Regents.
CM Advisors serve an initial 1-year, renewable term in one of two roles:
Exam Advisors participate in ICPM sponsored job task analyses and write and review questions
for ICPM exams. As an Exam Advisor, you will receive online training in question writing and re-
view. Your time commitment will be nominal – you will be asked to write 1 or 2 questions and
participate in 1 online meeting per month.
Learning Advisors evaluate learning formats and content, and provide feedback on new ICPM
learning products. As a Learning Advisor, you will be asked to review learning formats and con-
tent that relates to your area of expertise (e.g., leadership, human resources, customer service,
accounting, etc.). In addition, you will have the opportunity to write practice questions and case
studies to support existing ICPM learning products, as well as provide feedback on new products.
Eligible candidates for the CM Advisory Council must possess a minimum of 5 years of recent man-
agement experience and be CM certified with current recertification status. CM instructors, facilitators
and ICPM Authorized Partners may also participate; however, they are restricted to the role of Learning
Advisor only.
Applications for the CM Advisory Council are now being accepted (15-20 candidates for each role). To
apply, click here to log on to the ICPM site, fill out an application form, and upload a copy of your re-
sume. Once initial openings are filled, future vacancies will be filled from the remaining candidates.
The CM Advisory Council serves an essential role in the production of high quality exam and learning
products, which will develop the next generation of managers. Questions about the role of Exam Advisor
can be directed to Drew Koch at [email protected] [PH: 540-568-3245]. Questions about the role of
Learning Advisor can be directed to Jonathan Lutz at [email protected] [PH: 540-568-4571].

Frequently Asked CM Questions . . . . .
1.) ―I’ve forgotten to recertify. How do I bring my certification current?‖
Certificants must recertify annually by February 28th, in order to maintain ―current‖ CM status and con-
tinue to use the ―CM‖ professional credential. If you have not yet recertified for 2012, your account has
been temporarily locked. You can reinstate your account by following the steps below:
Go to http://www.icpm.biz
Login and follow the recertification instructions that appear.
If you have neglected to recertify for more than one year:
Contact ICPM at [email protected] to request a Certification Renewal Form.
NOTE: All CMs receive an email notification in January of each year with instructions on the recertifica-
tion process. A $50 professional fee is due by the end of February. Professional Development activities
and attestations to the Code of Ethics and CM Usage must be recorded by December 31st of 2012. CMARs
recertify with AALAS and should contact Sally Westlake at AALAS with any recertification questions.
2). ―I was CM certified in December of 2011. When do I have to recertify?‖
All CM applicants that are certified as of December 31st are required to recertify the next year. For exam-
ple, if you were certified on December 15, 2011, you would be eligible to recertify in 2012. Recertification
runs with the calendar year, and not the certification date. Recertification applies to the year ahead, thus,
2012 recertification covers the period January—December 2012.
Employers value CM certification because it not only validates a level of managerial competency, it also
mandates continuing professional development to keep your skills up-to-date. Don’t jeopardize your CM
accomplishment by letting your certification lapse. Obtain the maximum value from your CM certification
by recertifying annually and engaging in continuing education regularly.

What do CMs say about their CM experience? “Obtaining the Certified Manager (CM) credential was a
remarkable milestone in my professional career. The overall experience, knowledge gained, and oppor-
tunity to test my understanding of the CM Body of Knowledge has proven itself to be worthwhile time
and time again. Building a solid knowledge foundation at any point in a manager’s career is vital as ref-
erencing theories, models, and processes may best equip a manager to lead organizational efforts to
meet established goals and objectives. I have been fortunate to be a part of five sub-organizations within
my current parent organization and I consistently find myself matching up CM BOK contents with past
experiences to make strategic decisions. I am honored to be a part of this exceptional network of profes-
sional managers.” Chris Meadows, CM is a 2010 graduate of the CM Program administered at James
Madison University. He is currently employed as a Health Services Officer with the US Army.
