CAMBODIA - COMMUNITY POULTRY FARMING
ICS (Investing in Children and their Societies) strives towards a better future for children in rural Africa and Asia. Through its projects and programs, it builds
on a sustainable growth in welfare and wellbeing by simultaneously investing in economic and social opportunities and needs. The central building blocks of the work of ICS are social business, child protection and skillful parenting.
The issueThe contribution of poultry to household income is normally one of many activities in diversified rural farming systems in Cambodia. Besides crop cultivation, backyard-poultry raising in Cambodia contributes to supporting livelihoods by providing food that otherwise would have to be purchased from the market. In addition, income from poultry raising also allows households to meet basic everyday needs for the family.
Practical example
Mr. Chun Rith is 31 year old. He and his wife have a daughter of 9 and a son of 7 years old. He and his family lives at Chheu Slab Village (Kouk Khpos Commune) in Oddar Meanchey Province. In May 2012 he became chicken raising member. He received 140 young chickens and food for them. It takes 62 days to raise the chickens until they are ready to be sold on the market. After the market Mr. Chun Rith calculated the total cost. In total, after paying back ICS, he made $80 profit. This made him very satisfied. He said: “However I had almost no education, I now have a job; chicken raising. It’s my families permanent job and I can support my family. Thanks to chicken raising, my daughter and son are able to go to school now.”
Community Poultry farmingICS supports the local organization SorSorTroung (SST) to promote poultry raising among rural families in Oddar Meanchey Province. The rural families organise themselves in a cooperative. SST will not only provide subsistent feed, but it will also become a core livelihood and increase of family income generation through fair contract growing scheme, enhancing skills in poultry raising, production of chickens and eggs to be sold at affordable price to farmers for profits and household consumptions, production of feeds to reduce buying of commercial feeds which rise up capital investment.
Additional InputICS conducted a baseline survey among 9 targeted villages in 3 communes: Beng, Kok Mon, and Kok Kpuos. All in the Banteay Ampil District. These 9 villages served as a sample study for the total of 30 villages that are the target areas of the plan. Totally, the Poultry Production Cooperative consists of 136 households. The information of the sample study is used to revise the project.
