Did you know..O 50% things we do will be on cloud by

2014

O 26% people watch ALL their TV on the net

O More people have phones than toilets

Rethinking EducationO “Schools were built upon the fundamental

that teachers and knowledge and information were scarce. That is no longer the reality.”

O “..we continue to see schools as the place where our children go to master a narrow list of content, knowledge and skills that were originally defined almost 150 years ago..

Page 6: ICT Curriculum Innovation Workshop By James Lee. Agenda O The current state of the world and education O What doesn’t work O What works O What teachers

Rethinking EducationO “The problem is that most “reform” efforts are

aimed at simply doing what we’ve been doing better, almost exclusively in the form of raising test scores. ”

O “..information and answers are a Google search away. Users expect to use their technology to get their answers…except in school.

O In school, we ask them all sorts of questions that they could answer with their phones or laptops, but we don’t let them.”

Discuss in groups:O How does ICT fit into a curriculum that will

best prepare students for the future?

O What skills do we and they (students & teachers) need to learn?

O What habits do we and they need to unlearn?

O What isn’t working and why not?

O What are we doing right?

What doesn’t workO "College is a place where a professor's

lecture notes go straight to the students' lecture notes, without passing through the brains of either." – Mark Twain

O We have technology, but either limited or an overabundance of content. Where to start?

Page 9: ICT Curriculum Innovation Workshop By James Lee. Agenda O The current state of the world and education O What doesn’t work O What works O What teachers

What doesn’t workO Technology is useful if it serves a

purpose; otherwise it is just a gadget.

O “ipad is like a violin. It's a tool. Use it properly.”

O Just because you can do something with IT, doesn't mean you should.

Page 10: ICT Curriculum Innovation Workshop By James Lee. Agenda O The current state of the world and education O What doesn’t work O What works O What teachers

What doesn’t workO Have an enthusiastic scepticism about

technology.

O Ask: How will this IT tool help improve current teaching and learning practices?

O How is teaching and learning improved with this device/software?

O And where is the proof?

Page 11: ICT Curriculum Innovation Workshop By James Lee. Agenda O The current state of the world and education O What doesn’t work O What works O What teachers

What doesn’t workO Teachers need a reason to use IT.

O “Technology doesn't teach people; people teach people.”

Page 12: ICT Curriculum Innovation Workshop By James Lee. Agenda O The current state of the world and education O What doesn’t work O What works O What teachers

What doesn’t workO True or False: All kids are experts at IT

O Just because you eat at restaurants doesn't make you a chef.

O Just because kids use Facebook doesn't make them an IT expert.

21st Century SkillsO Focus and develop 21 century skills like:

O Problem solving: Analyse situation and propose possible solutions

O Critical thinking: Evaluate quality of resources and information

O Team work: Be able to work well in groups with people you may or may not get along with.

O Communication: Be able to articulate verbally, written, visually and electronically

Page 14: ICT Curriculum Innovation Workshop By James Lee. Agenda O The current state of the world and education O What doesn’t work O What works O What teachers

21st Century SkillsO Collaboration: Be able to constructively

comment, edit and add to work.

O Creativity and innovation: Have confidence to take risks, experiment, try new things or ideas, and have them heard. It’s ok to fail at something as long as you learn from it.

O Note: Creative vs repurposing are different things and can lead to deskilling. Teach kids to be creative.

What teachers should do first

O If you can’t beat them, join them.

O PDs on computer maintenance – build technical knowledge.

O Get on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube. Join Steam, online gaming. Play games with the students. Build rapport.

O The more you understand the world these students are living in these days, the more it will influence your teaching.

O Teachers should learn together, share knowledge, help each other out.

StrategiesO Orderly classroom: students know ICT policy (right to learn,

right to feel safe).

O Watching YouTube – ask the student how many people are watching the same clip off their computer. Then ask, how many have you distracted from their learning?

O Touching cables – Students safety is our concern. Do not let them fiddle with equipment. Call tech support if things aren’t working, or another teacher you know might be able to help.

O Computers not working – check all cables are in place, etc. Call tech support. Turn off computer and stick a note on it. Email tech with room, computer number, and problem. Then be patient.

StrategiesO Check the taskbar for any programs that shouldn’t be

running eg games. If in doubt, ask students to click on it. Apply consequences.

O Have students share learning, or things they have seen on internet via projector. Empower them with peer learning opportunities.

O Feedback – all students have email accounts at the school. Email them feedback or communicate with them to build rapport and encourage confidence to ask questions or for help. Set up Facebook groups to share and comment on each other’s work as a class..

Strategies for leadersO Build staff technical capacity and confidence.

O Teachers need support of both technical and pedagogy with IT

O “start with the familiar, then with the innovative.” Teachers are resilient to change, so introduce how they can do what they currently do, better using ICT.

O “ICT in teaching and learning must be easier, faster, more effective, and require less effort than current methods, otherwise it is not going to be successful. This is the yardstick we should be using to measure all ICT implementation strategies.”

Page 20: ICT Curriculum Innovation Workshop By James Lee. Agenda O The current state of the world and education O What doesn’t work O What works O What teachers

Strategies for leadersO Target specific software tools to deliver and assess

curriculum to staff.

O Guide and support staff in class to develop confidence using software tools.

O Develop pyramid style teaching, and provide time for teachers to support others.

O Crowd sourcing – leaders can learn from other teachers in school and around the world.
