Editor’s letterWelcome to ICT for Education’s 2017 Exeter conference, an event that I hope will inform and inspire your teaching of computing and use of ICT across the school curriculum. Today’s conference will be led by Steve Wheeler, associate professor of learning technologies at the Plymouth Institute of Education. Steve will be joined by Matthew Pitts, a Year 6 teacher at Broadclyst Community Primary School, who will discuss the use of digital technologies to build shared purpose and community in schools; Phil Gardner, subject leader of computer science at Tiverton High School, who will explore creative ideas that can bring theory topics to life in the classroom; and Dan Leighton, director of education at the New School Partnership, who will consider if and when teaching and learning will be transformed by educational technology.

Our guest speaker today is Andy Hutt, an educational ICT consultant who will present an informative and entertaining session covering some of the many free and low-cost ICT tools that can enhance your work in the classroom.

If you have questions for the conference speakers, join Question Time, a session that will answer your questions and debate topical issues. Then there is ICT Reviews Live!, an independent product review session that will put suppliers to the test and give you real insight into their product capabilities. And don’t miss the exhibition hall, where you can explore products and services to support teaching and learning at your school.

The refreshments are on us today, so do take a break and have a chat with colleagues, speakers and suppliers.

I hope this brochure will help you navigate the conference and maximise your time. Have a great day and I look forward to meeting you.Best Regards,

Sarah Underwood Editor

Digital learning futures: Social, mobile, personalSteve Wheeler, associate professor of learning technologies at the Plymouth Institute of Education

In an age where young people have an affinity with smartphones, computer games and social media, teachers face a big challenge – or a golden opportunity. How can new technology promote learning, engage students and motivate them to sustain a lifelong journey of learning? In this presentation, Steve will argue that the future of education will be richly social, intensely personal and increasingly mobile. As teachers, we need to seize the opportunity to leverage the potential of new technologies to enrich, engage and extend learning for all.

A Digital School CommunityMatthew Pitts, Year 6 teacher, Broadclyst Community Primary School

Digital technologies such as social media, video conferencing and multi-author tools can be used to build shared purpose, ethos and community in schools. Broadclyst Community Primary School has focused, over a period of several years, on using these tools to connect teachers, learners, parents and other stakeholders. In this session, Matt will share a number of lessons learned and opportunities discovered on this journey, from upskilling parents to maximising the use of the cloud and streamlining the process of collaborative learning.

Out of the book and into the classroomPhil Gardner, subject leader, computer science, Tiverton High School

This session will explore creative and practical ideas that can bring a cross-section of common theory topics to life in the classroom. Armed with a Raspberry Pi (or other) computer, a smartphone and free software, Phil will demonstrate simple activities you can use in class to engage students and make IT and Computer Science more accessible. Conference delegates are invited to choose from a range of examples, including binary and hexadecimal conversion, how sounds are stored as digital data, running a simple web server, recreating Twitter using simple SQL, racing programming languages, and searching and sorting real data.

Are we nearly there yet?Dan Leighton, director of education at the New School Partnership

Edtech has been in use in schools for decades, so why is it taking so long to have an effect we can recognise as genuinely pedagogically useful? When are we going to see real transformation and how will we know when we have transformed? Do we even want to be transformed!

Pobble makes writing ridiculously exciting! Teachers use the Pobble platform to find the best teaching resources, give pupils an audience for their work, and to assess writing. For pupils, the platform offers a unique opportunity to engage with their peers, and for parents, it provides a unique way to connect with their child’s learning journey.

The literacy platform was started in 2013, by a group teachers based in North Yorkshire, England. A true grassroots initiative, the founders aimed to inspire pupils by giving them an audience for their writing and to save teachers’ time preparing and assessing writing lessons. Before long, they were travelling throughout the UK visiting their partner schools and delivering Pobble into the classroom.

Pobble is hailed one of the UK’s top startups (#54 in 2016 by startups.co.uk, top 5 in EdTech in the 2016 Great British Entrepreneur Awards). It has been praised by authors such as Anthony Horowitz and Michael Morpurgo, and entrepreneurs like Martha Lane Fox. Finally, Pobble has gained the support of prominent education leaders, and partners like Microsoft Accelerator.

Today, Pobble showcases over 100,000 pieces of writing, published by tens of thousands of teachers from all over the world. And this is just the beginning.

Stand 14: Plymouth School of Creative Arts

What are you looking for at the ICT for Education Conference?

MAYBE

Variations on a theme? Latest versions of the same old same old? Technology that isn’t central to what schools do, nor have a significant part to play in helping them to achieve their core purpose?

OR MAYBE

Something you’ve not heard of before. Something that doesn’t simply substitute, replicate, or augment existing Teaching and Learning, something that actively, genuinely, transforms it?

If the first paragraph above describes what you are looking for then we are sorry we can’t be of assistance. But, if the second paragraph does then please seek us out at the Conference and ask us “how are you ‘Creating Individuals, Making Futures’ with innovative, yet tried and tested technology?”

We will describe to you a year long project to implement a system we found at BETT 2016 that links Curriculum, Pedagogy, and Assessment in a way that no other system,

or school, we have found does (whilst also increasing student engagement and potentially decreasing staff workload). The project is ongoing and we are at the conference, supported by the system’s makers, looking for other schools to work with on the next stages of the project.

Stand 22: .Soft Egg

Soft Egg is an education only, IT Support and Managed Services Provider specialising in Schools and Multi Academy Trusts.

As IT becomes ever more central to learning, it’s vital to understand the true cost when ICT doesn’t work as you expect. Just 15 minutes of small IT problems per day could cost you nearly 47 hours of classroom time per year. But it needn’t be like that.

Slow login times don’t need to happen. Slow internet and Wi-Fi dead spots aren’t a fact of life. Software should never be out of date. E-safety should be about confidence in your IT network, not paranoia. And networks rarely cause problems when they’re well maintained.

For many schools, one or more of these issues are facts, which rob you of classroom time. However, there is always a choice. A choice not to accept low standards, to raise expectations and seek qualified help. When we talk about IT support, we should talk about support for outstanding learning in its widest sense. It’s about removing the hurdles that stop you achieving more in your classrooms. And it’s about making IT the power for good that it can and should be.

Stand 29: Computing At School

The Computing At School group (CAS) aims to promote the teaching of Computing at school. CAS was born out of our excitement with our discipline, combined with a serious concern that many students are being “turned off” computing by a combination of factors that have conspired to make the subject seem dull and pedestrian. Our goal is to put the excitement back into Computing at school.

The Computing At School group (CAS) is a grass roots organisation, whose energy, creativity, and leadership comes from its members. CAS is a collaborative partner with the BCS through the BCS Academy of Computing, and has formal support from other industry partners. Membership is open to everyone, and is very broad, including teachers, parents, governors, exam boards,

industry, professional societies, and universities. We speak for the discipline of computing at school level, inc. FE, and not for any particular interest group.
