LAURA JAYESSky News Political Reporter [email protected]

W hen Kevin Rudd was rolled by Julia Gillard for the Prime Ministership, she justifi ed it by saying “I

believe a good government has lost its way”.

Ms Gillard pledged to put the Government back on the right path by solving three vexed policy areas – mining taxation, carbon pricing and asylum seekers.

Th e carbon tax is still largely seen as a broken promise in the electorate, even if anger has tempered.

Asylum seekers are still arriving in boats at a record rate – almost 1,000 already this year and it’s only February.

Until last week the mining tax was looking like the least problematic.

Th at was until the Treasurer revealed the so-called minerals resource rent tax (MRRT) only reaped $126 million in its fi rst six months – well short of the $2 billion forecast for the tax’s fi rst year.

At the very least, it is an embarrassment. At worst, it’s another political disaster for Labor.

Th e Prime Minister and Treasurer now face criticism from all sides; the Greens, the independents, the mining industry, the opposition, the states... oh, and from Kevin Rudd.

Mr Rudd is using the apparent MRRT fl aws to once again fan the leadership fl ames.

Th e former PM gladly laid the blame at Treasurer Wayne Swan’s feet – telling Sky News this week it was he and Ms Gillard who changed his government’s original design.

“[Th e] Treasurer and the new Prime Minister elected to make some signifi cant changes to the structure of the tax. I think we are all familiar with what those changes are,” he said.

“So, I think in terms of any future changes to the tax, given the fact that it has not collected any real revenue of any signifi cance so far, that really is a matter for the Prime Minister and the Treasurer to consider and I’ll leave it with them.”

But the mining tax was fl awed under Kevin Rudd too.

In its original form, the resource super profi ts tax was unacceptable to the industry, and had no hope of being agreed to. Mr Rudd himself was deeply involved in his own negotiations to water down the tax and break the stalemate.

After he was rolled, Ms Gillard took over. But she only conducted negotiations with the big three (Rio, BHP and Xstrata).

It is now demonstrably clear she gave too much away by agreeing to refund increases in State Government royalties.

Now she has the Herculean task of trying to overhaul the tax before the election without angering stakeholders too much.

Another war with the mining industry is too dangerous, even if most Australians believe it does need to pay more.

Instead, Julia Gillard has picked a fi ght with the states.

Th is is unlikely to end well... the states can’t be forced and have no real incentive to agree and the big miners are geared up for round two with a combative ad campaign at the ready.

For Kevin Rudd – he sees the whole

ordeal as vindication – but it might not win him any votes in caucus for highlighting the party’s festering wounds.

For Julia Gillard, it reminds Labor MPs (especially those in marginal seats) that it is approaching another election with the three key issues she identifi ed to fi x still deeply fl awed.

Marrickville Bowling Club bowler Liz Baker left for Melbourne this week to represent her club at the

Australian Open of lawn bowls.Ms Baker, 36, will take to the green at

Victoria’s Darebin International Sports Centre on Monday, February 18, after securing her place at a NSW qualifying event in November.

“I’ll be there in our blue and yellow uniform,” Ms Baker said of the knockout tournament.

“Th ere were only 66 qualifi ers for the women’s singles in all of Australia.”

In November, Ms Baker attended the NSW qualifying lawn bowls event in western Sydney simply to practice her singles game.

“I just went along because I like to play singles, then the draw came out and I’d drawn one of the current Australian representative players,” Ms Baker said.

“Th en I won... No one’s ever heard of me, I’m just a baby bowler, so I was shocked and thrilled. I was so happy I just started crying, I couldn’t help it.”

Ms Baker said she’d been overwhelmed by support from people at the Marrickville Bowling and Recreation Club.

“Th e day that I qualifi ed, I sent a couple of people text messages and the number of phone calls and texts I got back, it was fantastic. Everyone’s been wishing me well.”

Asked about the appeal of lawn bowls,

Ms Baker said she enjoyed the challenge.“I just got addicted the fi rst time I

played,” she said.“I want to go as far as I can. We’ve been

putting in lots of hours training. I want to make the state team.”

To perfect her play, the librarian by day has trained with current world outdoor

and triples champion Australian Karen Murphy, who she may battle on Monday.

Th e club’s treasurer Jim Fowler said Ms Baker was one of the club’s young and upcoming players known for her technique.

“It’s been described to me as almost the perfect delivery,” Mr Fowler said.

Kids Helpline has star power: Kerr signs on as ambassador

Roll up your sleeves: Clean Up Australia Day needs you

International model, author and businesswoman Miranda Kerr has been announced as ambassador of the national telephone and online

counselling service Kids Helpline.Kids Helpline CEO Tracy Adams said

Ms Kerr’s authentic commitment to health and wellbeing made her an inspirational role model for young people across the nation.

“Miranda has been a supporter of Kids Helpline for a number of years and we are delighted she has become our ambassador,” she said.

“Last year our counsellors responded to

270,000 contacts from kids getting in touch for support and by announcing Miranda as our new ambassador we hope to take that reach even further.”

First becoming involved with the service a number of years ago, Ms Kerr more recently lent her support to the Too Many Too Soon suicide awareness campaign, prompted by her personal loss of a young cousin to suicide.

“Th ere is not enough awareness about the fact that Kids Helpline services are available to all Australian kids and that is why I wanted to support them,” Ms Kerr said.

Marrickville Council is encouraging citizens to roll up their sleeves, don a pair of gardening gloves and head out

to sites around the Marrickville area for Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday, March 3.

In the past three years, sites around the Marrickville Council area have attracted nearly 6,000 volunteers with more than fi ve tonnes of waste collected.

Marrickville Mayor Victor Macri said he sees this as the perfect opportunity for residents wanting to build relationships within their community while also

helping to beautify the environment.“If we all chip in, we can see that our

local environment really benefi ts from the care aff orded by citizens participating on Clean Up Australia Day, fostering a sense of neighbourliness and enduring community dynamic,” Cr Macri said.

To assist with the volunteering process, Marrickville Council will be providing logistical support on the day, recruiting community groups, individuals, local businesses and schools to help clean up our environment. For more information, please visit Clean Up Australia at www.cleanup.org.au.

Journalist and Leichhardt resident Hall Greenland has thrown his hat into the ring for the federal election in September as the Greens candidate for Grayndler.

Mr Greenland described the inner west seat of Grayndler, held by Labor MP Anthony Albanese since 1996, as a region where many voters are “much more progressive” politically than the Gillard Labor government.

“I don’t believe the majority of Grayndler voters support that government’s policies on climate change, single mums and the Northern Territory Intervention. I think the majority of voters in Grayndler are much more progressive than the Gillard government is proving to be,” he said.

“I want to be elected to represent those voters.”Mr Greenland said if elected, he could second

Private Members’ Bills with Melbourne Greens MP Adam Bandt and his priorities would be opposing the WestConnex motorway, action on a second Sydney airport, investment in high speed rail, raising pensions for single mums, a “genuine mining tax” and “huge” investments in public education and public transport.

“I think it’s a very important election. Grayndler in all probability is the next seat that falls to the Greens, after Melbourne, so I think it’s important that Anthony Albanese listens to the electorate and responds positively on issues like WestConnex and the airport.

“I think the economic case for WestConnex is a furphy. Most of the economic benefi ts depend on shortening the travel time for people from western Sydney to the city. Most of those will evaporate in a very short time; they won’t be real or lasting benefi ts.

“We’d get more bang for our buck if we were to

invest in more light rail, more heavy rail and more buses.”

He also took aim at the federal government’s Mining Tax, which he described as “a joke”.

“I don’t think it’s much of an exaggeration to say the big mining companies wrote the Mining Tax. Th ere can be no surprise it’s raising very little money. What’s worse is Abbott wants to scrap it.”

The fi fth and fi nal Reclaim the Lanes festival poured through Newtown lanes and streets on Saturday before settling at

Sydney Park.Hundreds of party-goers descended

on Alice and King lanes as mobile sound systems off ered multiple makeshift dance fl oors.

People danced to the likes of Itch-E & Scratch-E, covered bitumen with chalk and stopped traffi c as police escorted the parade down King Street before an offi cial after-party at the Gladstone Hotel.

Reclaim the Lanes aims to celebrate the forgotten urban spaces of the inner west and the creative community that live around them.

One of the festival’s directors, Stewart Rimes, told the Weekender the turnout was better than expected, with crowd estimates of 1,200 to 1,400 at Sydney Park.

“Th ere’s such a strong community out there, which I think was demonstrated from the numbers that turned up on the weekend,” Mr Rimes said.

“We’re so grateful to everyone who put in so much free time and eff ort into making it such an incredible day.

Mr Rimes said he hoped people would “pick up the baton” and stage their own community street parties in years to come.

A ustralian winemakers are amongst the world’s

best when it comes to creating blends, wines that in many cases

can prove far more rewarding than straight varietals.

And a very interesting, and yes rewarding, blend that’s now on bottle shop shelves is Fifth Leg’s 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz Merlot, a drop that winemaker, Oliver Crawford sums up as “a serious wine in a fun package”.

Indeed Fifth Leg is a fun and quality label, produced by Devil’s Lair Wines in the heart of Western Australia’s Margaret River region.

And it was named as so after the fossilised remains of a Tasmanian Tiger with a mysterious fi fth leg were found in a cave near the winery. How it got there from Tasmania, and how it came to have a fi fth leg, will doubtless remain forever two of life’s little mysteries.

The Cabernet Sauvignon component gives this wine dark cherry and blackberry fruit notes and grippy tannins. On the other side, the Shiraz provides plum, pepper and spice, and the Merlot adds nice, juicy, red fruits on the nose and palate. The quality of the Margaret River fruit gives it fl avour which will appeal to the serious red wine drinker as well. A great drop at $17.99 with that next family Sunday roast.

One to note: Victoria’s Blue Pyrenees, 180 kilometres northwest of Melbourne, was conceived by French Champagne houses Krug and Charles Heidseick (then known as Chateau Remy) back in

1963, but today it still pays homage to its French heritage by making classic Australian sparklings in the Méthode Champenoise technique.

Their 2009 Midnight Cuvee – so-named because the grapes are hand-picked at night under moonlight to avoid heat of day damage – is a stand-out bubbly with loads of sparkle and delicious fl avour. Pay $32 and go forth and enjoy this one at that next party or celebration.

Moonlight wines and the best blendsSecret garden space at Marrickville LibraryA new outdoor space known as the ‘Secret Garden’ will be launched adjacent to Marrickville Library on Tuesday February 26. An extension of the library community hub, the ‘Secret Garden’ will create a safe, outdoor space where Marrickville citizens may read borrowed articles, or interact with other visitors of the library.“Marrickville Council is proud to present a public space for patrons of the library to read quietly, or socialise with other members of the community,” said Marrickville Mayor Victor Macri.By developing the outdoor area, more space is available to the community so as to reduce social and cultural isolation. Th e space was transformed with the help of a Regional and Local Community Infrastructure grant of $60,000 supplied by the Federal Government.

Reebok CrossFit The best general fi tness program available!

1/32 Lilian Fowler PlaceMarrickville

Phone: 1800 211 906 www.reebokcrossfi tgcs.com.au.

Founded for the new millennium in 2000, CrossFit is a form of fi tness training that overtakes the others.

CrossFit strength and conditioning programs are described as constantly varied, high intensity, functional movements, with the stated goal of improving overall fi tness.

Now, Marrickville is home to one of the country’s prime CrossFit studios, after trainers Darren Coughlan and Brendon Walsh opened the doors of Reebok CrossFit at Lilian Fowler Place in December.

“It’s the best general fi tness program available today, the results speak for themselves. It helps you to be prepared for all the activities and movements you might come across in your daily life,” Mr Walsh said.

Mr Walsh said he came to CrossFit after he fractured his C4 when he injured his spine and needed to strengthen his core to return to good health.

“I did all my rehabilitation at CrossFit Newcastle with Darren,” Mr Walsh said.

“When I had fi nished rehabilitation, I was much stronger and faster than I had ever been. It was then I knew there was something special about CrossFit.”

Mr Walsh said CrossFit embodies a community aspect to classes and fosters a supportive environment that includes weights, power lifting, sprinting, jumping and pull ups in a class setting.

“Our motto is ‘fi tness for everyone’. We have clients who are grandmothers and we have clients who are professional athletes,” he said.

“CrossFit is universally scalable, so everyone does the same activities, but they’re scaled to meet individual abilities for any age, fi tness level or injury.”

If you’re looking for a new way to get fi t, Reebok CrossFit is off ering new clients a 10 per cent discount for the month of February.

“We’re always here, come in and say hello.”Reebok CrossFit is located at 1/32 Lilian

Fowler Place, Marrickville.

Venus in Aquarius Conjuncts the Sun and Sextiles Uranus, Trines Jupiter and Squares Saturn. Whilst Mercury and Mars conjuncts Neptune and Sextiles Pluto. February 3rd - February 28th.

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21GEMINI

Th e new moon on the 10th falls in your party sector and you

will feel an overwhelming urge to kick up your heels all night long. It is important that you take a serious attitude to all monetary aff airs as the full moon on the 26th warns you to be careful of deception. So make sure that all fi nancial details are spelled out in detail and make certain you know the facts.

Neptune encourages you to indulge in pampering yourself,

however you need to take a responsible approach to all fi nancial aff airs, so don’t let that extravagant streak lead you to far astray. Th e new moon on the 10th is the ideal time to have a good conversation with a friend. Th e full moon on the 26th warns you to be careful of becoming grumpy and irritable with colleagues.

Th ere is no doubt that issues surrounding friendships and

trust are very important, therefore you need to be as straightforward as possible and don’t try to evade any responsibilities. Th e new moon on the 10th is a good time to review your credit card/bank statements. Th e full moon on the 26th warns you to be careful of becoming overly critical of others’ lack of education and insights!

If you have to deal with awkward, demanding children

or even adults who insist on acting like children, you will be able to defuse the most troubling situation by the use of empathy. Th e new moon on the 10th is the ideal time to turn your attentions to shared fi nancial resources, taxation matters or updating your insurance policies. Be careful of what you say as someone will be off ended.

Th e males in your life are going to be passing on some useful

advice. Unexpected breakthroughs are likely on the home and family front and you will have the heaven sent chance to pour oil on any troubled family waters. Th e new moon on the 10th indicates that if you are renovating or dealing with property issues things will suddenly move forward. A friend is going to need a shoulder to lean upon.

A serious attitude is likely for your relationships as Neptune

is making you feel rather suspicious about certain people. You may have a vague suspicion about a friend’s motives, but don’t do anything without knowing the full facts. Th e new moon on the 10th is the time to do something to impress the boss. Th e full moon on the 26th indicates that you will need to be patient with unruly youngsters.

With Saturn in a diffi cult aspect to your sign you’re

ready to confront any unfi nished business both personally and professionally. Th e new moon in your sign on the 10th sees you using your famous sense of humour to win friends and infl uence people. Th e full moon on the 26th warns you to be careful of being overly assertive as this kind of attitude will land you in hot water.

Your energy may be rather low and it’s possible that you’ve

been taking on too much just to show how impressive you are. Are you sure you’re not going for the sympathy vote? It doesn’t really matter as the fact is you need rest so make sure you get some. Th e new moon on the 10th is the ideal time to polish up your public image. Th e full moon on the 26th warns you to expect a blow out fi nancially.

Th e past may come back to haunt you or to cause you

embarrassment, perhaps you forgot to do something or you did something in an ineffi cient manner and this problem now reveals itself in an inconvenient way. Th e new moon on the 10th is the ideal time to buy a new car, computer or mobile. Th e full moon on the 26th indicates that you’ve gone as far as you can in your current career position.

Neptune is creating a lot of rumour mongering and back

stabbing at work and you are best advised to keep to yourself. If an old health complaint keeps fl aring up it’s the right time to seek the advice of a professional. Th e new moon on the 10th is the ideal time for an adventure. Th e full moon on the 26th warns you to be careful of how you deal with a highly sensitive situation at home.

Th e travel bug is likely to bite so take yourself to your local

travel agency and look through a few brochures. You are likely to be feeling emotionally drained and worn out so do your best to get some rest before you become ill. Th e new moon on the 10th is the ideal time to trust your instincts on all matters of the heart and fi nances. Th e full moon on the 26th is going to be a diffi cult time for your partner, so they will need some extra TLC.

You are going to be a little too critical for your own good as

you are likely to fi nd colleagues and neighbours being diffi cult to get on with. New projects at work will also be diffi cult to launch. On the home front this is the ideal time to replace a washing machine or dishwasher. Th e new moon on the 10th is the ideal time to spring clean the house. Th e full moon on the 26th indicates that emotional anxieties will zap your energy levels.

WE NOW HIRE!

As a nurse people often ask me questions like, ‘What are the most important things I can do for my health?’. Th is is such a

complicated question because there is no single answer, but I know of a blog by ‘Natural New Age Mum’ and I want to share it with you all. By following these 10 steps, I have no doubt that your health will improve.1. Educate yourself. Learn about health

and nutrition. Read labels. Read books. Read blogs. Research. Ask questions.

2. Keep it simple. Eat fresh food with the least human intervention. Don’t eat anything your grandma wouldn’t recognise. Don’t eat anything advertised on TV. Th e longer the shelf life, the shorter your life.

3. Drink more water. Really. It’s been said, I know, but lots of fi ltered water really does make a huge diff erence to how you feel. Ditch the soft drink or cordial and keep alcohol to a rare treat.

4. Start eating superfoods. Put simply, some foods give you more bang for your buck. My favourites are coconut oil, chia seeds and spirulina. Visit your health food store and start experimenting.

5. Choose organic. Lighten the toxic load of your family by choosing organic. You also ensure that your

food is GMO and additive free at the same time. Plus, it’s good for the planet.

6. Take a probiotic. Your gut health plays a very important part in your entire body’s health. Get it sorted and you will feel a million dollars. Choose a really good quality probiotic for the best eff ect.

7. Stretch. Our bodies are not designed to sit around all day, hunched over a computer desk, TV or video game. Get up, get on the fl oor and do some yoga stretches.

8. Love your body. No matter what it looks like or has been through, love your body. If you don’t love and respect your beautiful body, why would you look after it?

9. Slow down. Breathe. Relax. Enjoy life. Stress is a killer. Don’t fi nd that out too late.

10. Be Authentic. Be yourself. Trying to live a life being someone you aren’t is a sure-fi re path to ill health. Happiness and health will come when you live your truth.

I had a client come in who was very overweight fairly recently, we went over a little of her eating patterns through the day.

She was having a weight loss shake for breakfast and lunch, a diet soft drink for an afternoon snack and dinner was some fruit and sometimes one of those sport supplement bars you can fi nd in any supermarket now. She thought she was doing very well to follow this ‘healthy’ diet. Problem was she was feeling like rubbish, tired and hungry all the time.

Th at was just the immediate eff ect, I didn’t want to tell her how bad the long term eff ect of eating that non-food was. From the chemically extracted mess they pull out of the defatted useless, cheap soybean leftovers, then call it ‘soy protein isolate’, to the chemical and MSG laden diet products and powders. Th is diet has nothing to do with getting someone healthy, and lots to do with getting someone sick, weak, tired and depressed. MSG in weight loss supplements can go under many names, even ‘natural fl avour’. Funny thing is, they use the same stuff in labs to fatten animals up when they are doing obesity studies.

As well as the highly toxic chemicals like hexane that is used to refi ne soy, it has also been shown to inhibit thyroid function, and cause oestrogen

problems. Do some research on low fat or low cholesterol diets and I bet depression will start showing up in any of the studies you fi nd.

Seriously, use common sense! If your breakfast is a powder poured out of a shiny bag with a use by date in a couple years time, then there is nothing good in it for your body. Forget calories and look at nutrition. You don’t get fat eating highly nutritious food. For some good info check out a movie called ‘Hungry for Change’.

I’ve said before, if an obese person came up to me and can prove they got too fat eating completely unprocessed salad or vegetables, and things like fi sh or grass fed steak, I’d train them for free until they reach whatever weight they like!

No one has ever taken me up on it yet. And even if one day that guy did walk up to me I bet he’s the healthiest fat guy you’ll ever meet!

T o begin I want to let off some steam and express my disgust at Foxtel. Last week I received a notifi cation

from them saying my subscription would yet again rise by $3 per month, and that certain channels are moving packages. One of the channel swaps that baffl ed me the most was Animal Planet moving from the ‘Documentary & Adventure’ package, where it should be, over to… wait for it… ‘Kids & Music’. Try and make sense of that one. Firstly, I’ve never seen one music video on Animal Planet, and secondly since when are African lions hunting down a herd of deer perfect for children’s viewing? I’ve contacted Foxtel regarding the rather awkward channel swap but am still waiting on a response.

Now to the good stuff. The new Channel Nine version of ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ has fi nally announced auditioned details for all

those talented people out there looking to make it big in the entertainment industry. ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ are looking for solo acts, group performances, bands, dancers, magicians, circus and stunt acts, singers, musicians, comedians, novelty acts, animal acts, child performers… and whether amateur or semi-professional, their doors are open to anyone of any age. To audition visit www.australiasgottalent.com.au.

Heads up Bear Grylls fans – the ‘Man vs Wild’ star is back, this time fronting a new six-part series for Discovery called ‘Bear Grylls: Ultimate Survivors’. In the new series, Grylls takes his survival expertise one step further as he reveals the incredible stories of ordinary people stranded in devastatingly dire situations. Coupled with incredible archive footage and interviews with the survivors, Grylls will pit himself against the very same dangers and scenarios, re-living their journeys through fi rst-hand experience, and showing us how to survive through some of the world’s most desolate landscapes. Sounds brilliant!

Who remembers the ‘Thunderbirds’? Well, they may be back. ITV in the UK is reviving the ‘Thunderbirds’, some 50 years after it fi rst appeared. The new series which has the working title of ‘Thunderbirds Are Go!’ will feature a “unique mix of CGI animation and live-action model sets” and will “deliver a whole new level of action-adventure animation for today’s audience, whilst also affectionately paying tribute to the legacy of model locations from the classic series”.

How’s this for awesome news, Kate Ritchie aka little Sally Fletcher is returning home after almost fi ve years away. Ritchie’s return to ‘Home and Away’ will coincide with the soap’s 25th anniversary celebrations.

Ritchie will commence fi lming in a few weeks with episodes likely to air mid-year. It’s unknown how long her stint will be for but there’s no doubt producers will be encouraging her to stay.

Australia’s most successful short fi lms contest, Tropfest, will air for the fi rst time live on SBS this Sunday. Catch ‘Tropfest 2013’ on SBS ONE this Sunday, February 17 at 8.30pm. Tropfest 2013 features 16 fi nalists who are selected from around 700 entries.

Lastly, a show that I discovered over the weekend that actually wasn’t that bad was ‘Animal Airport’. The show follows the tales of the many creatures that pass through the doors of the Animal Reception Centre at Heathrow Airport. Nowhere else will you fi nd as many species of animals as they journey – some legally, many illegally – across the globe. Catch this surprisingly entertaining show on Lifestyle fi rst at 6.30pm on Saturdays and replayed at 1.30pm on Sundays.

E instürzende Neubauten from Germany will hit the Enmore Theatre on February 22 as part of

their Australian east coast tour.Their name, which translates to

‘collapsing new buildings’, is apt for a band that has defi ed conventional approaches to making music for more than 30 years.

The band’s frontman, Blixa Bargeld, said: “We will play some old songs but our Sydney show will focus on material

that has come into existence since this incarnation – in the last 15 years”.

Known for their use of improvised noise and formed amidst the urban decay of West Berlin in 1980, the band literally forged its reputation from building instruments using scrap metal pilfered from worksites and bludgeoning them with power tools on stage.

Einstürzende Neubauten’s Enmore Theatre show will be supported by fellow ex-Bad Seed and multi-instrumentalist Mick Harvey alongside violinist-guitarist JP Shilo and double bassist Rosie Westbrook.

T he baritone voice of internationally renowned singer, songwriter and actor, Josh Groban, is one of the

most instantly recognisable voices in the world.

Groban will be joined by an ensemble of world class musicians plus a local eight-piece orchestra when he embarks on his April 2013 ‘All That Echoes’ Australian Tour, in what will only be his second tour Down Under following a stellar sold-out debut in 2007.

“It is with great excitement that I announce my upcoming Australian tour,” Groban said.

“The fans, the venues and the overall beauty of the country make it a destination I look forward to bringing my music to, time and time again.”

Fans can expect stunning renditions of tunes from throughout Groban’s hugely successful recording career beginning with his 2001 Australian-platinum self-titled debut album, twice-platinum ‘Closer’, ARIA top fi ve ‘Awake’ and 2010’s ‘Illuminations’.

Josh Groban performs at the Sydney Opera House on Wednesday, April 24 at 8pm. To book tickets call 136 100 or visit www.ticketmaster.com.au.

One of Rugby League’s oldest local derbies was revived on Sunday afternoon at Belmore Sportsground, when the

Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs hosted the Newtown Jets in a fi rst grade trial match.

Th e Bulldogs were returning to their traditional home ground Belmore as the 2012 NRL Grand Finalists, while the Jets entered the 2013 season as the reigning VB NSW Cup premiers.

Th e Bulldogs fi elded a composite NSW Cup trial squad in the fi rst two quarters of the game while the Jets gave all of their triallists extended game time in the fi rst half.

Canterbury showed more cohesion and individual skills in the opening 40 minutes, running in fi ve tries to lead 22-4 at half-time.

Th e Newtown coaching staff would have been pleased to see NSW Cup regulars Khalid Deeb and Ryan Verlinden both make successful returns to the playing fi eld after season-ending leg injuries in 2012.

Th e second half saw the Bulldogs fi eld eight members of their 2012 NRL Grand Final squad plus their high-profi le new signing Tony ‘T-Rex’ Williams.

Newtown turned out a mixture of several members of their 2012 premiership team, a few members of the Roosters full-time squad as well as graduates from last year’s Roosters

Toyota Cup squad.Th e second 40 minutes was an excellent

contest and was regarded as being more than satisfactory by both clubs’ coaching staff .

Th e Jets held a very strong Bulldogs line-up to 14-10 (three tries to two) in the second half and both sides turned on quality football for the crowd of just under 5,000.

Former Roosters under 20’s players Dean Blackman, Paul Rokolati and Chris Taripo were Newtown’s try-scorers and new Jets signing Matt Mundine kicked a goal.

Newtown’s next trial match is against Wests Tigers at Allianz Stadium on Saturday, February 23, with this match timed for kick-off at 3.00pm.
