FACTS• ID Theft continues to be a widespread crime,
topping the list of consumer complaints to the Federal Trade Commission in 2014.
• Most U.S. households victimized by identity theft experience the illegal use of government documents or benefits.
• Employment-related fraud, credit card fraud and the fraudulent use of government documents are the top three ways Arizona consumers’ information is misused.
• Nationwide, it’s people ages 40-59 years old who are most often victimized.
LIMIT USE OF YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION
Financial Institutions and credit card companies regularly send out “Privacy Notices” giving customers the opportunity to limit the use of their personal information. Once completed, the customer shouldn’t need to make the request again unless other business transactions follow which may negate the original option.

CHECK YOUR CREDIT REPORT ANNUALLY
Skilled identity thieves can gain access to your personal information in many different ways and once they get that information they can use it to commit more fraud or theft. You are the one who can act most quickly when you think you have become a victim of identity theft. The federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires each of the nationwide consumer reporting agencies to provide citizens with a free copy of their credit report once every twelve months. Make this request and check your report carefully and regularly for anything that appears to be fraudulent or represents transactions or credit cards that don’t belong to you.
