2015 IDEASTREAM REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 1

As the proud volunteer chair of the Board, I know Northeast Ohioans have come to expect and consistently call on ideastream to provide in-depth and sustained, meaningful programs, information and analysis that is fast disappearing from the media landscape. ideastream is responding to this community need by doubling the investment in ideastream programs and services shared locally, nationally and internationally across all media platforms.

The ideastream Campaign for Community asks for a community investment of $20.3 million to build capacity and provide a funding bridge to sustain this increased level of service far into the future. The campaign’s success ensures that locally owned, locally produced, high-quality media assets are available to help build a sustainable future for the region.

With $15 million in pledges from individuals, corporations and foundations, ideastream has begun to make investments that bring MORE to the community:

• MORE in partnership with The City Club of Cleveland to produce, aggregate, catalogue, digitize and make available more than 100 City Club programs by broadcast, on the web and on demand—well beyond the 50 Friday Forums as in years past—on WVIZ/PBS, 90.3 WCPN and WCLV 104.9.

• MORE documentaries and specials like Violins of Hope: Strings of the Holocaust, which premiered on WVIZ/PBS in February 2016; others works such as upcoming specials about the centennial celebrations of Karamu House and the Cleveland Play House;

• MORE community issues programming with Ideas on WVIZ/PBS, The Sound of Ideas® on 90.3 WCPN and Ideas Now 24/7 on the web, social media and mobile platforms;

• MORE news reports produced locally and shared nationally on the PBS NewsHour and NPR’s All Things Considered, Morning Edition and Here & Now daily broadcasts;

• MORE focus on educational service to parents, child care professionals, students and schools through Cleveland Connects: The First 2000 Days, a partnership with Advance Ohio, cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer, sponsored by PNC.

The Board of Trustees is committed to the campaign goal and emerging even MORE community-focused, mission-driven and better able to respond to the communities we serve.

Thank you for all that you do to help ideastream strengthen our committees.

Kevin McMullen Chair ideastream

Campaign for Community contributions are helping to build capacity, augment capability to create, produce and distribute content, and provide a funding bridge to sustain this increased level of service. Commitments to the campaign allow ideastream to dramatically enhance an ability to reach new and diverse audiences and sustain those services to the residents of Northeast Ohio far into the future.

exposure

In 2015, ideastream was among seven leading nonprofit cultural, education and media organizations in Northeast Ohio to present a multifaceted project centered on a collection of violins that survived the Holocaust and had been painstakingly restored. Violins of Hope Cleveland was an unprecedented season of community-wide events involving musical performances, educational programs and a major exhibition. ideastream documented the entire project from beginning to end. In December, CBS Sunday Morning featured the project and included WVIZ/PBS footage from the opening concert. The PBS NewsHour and NPR’s Here & Now included segments by ideastream Senior Arts and Culture Reporter David C. Barnett. That same week, the ideastream-produced documentary Violins of Hope: Strings of the Holocaust premiered locally on WVIZ/PBS. The documentary is being offered to PBS member stations nationwide.

Special Documentary

More than 900 music patrons attended the sold-out opening concert of the Milton and Tamar Maltz Performing Arts Center at the Temple-Tifereth Israel at Case Western Reserve University featuring The Cleveland Orchestra and renowned Israeli violinist Shlomo Mintz, under the direction of Music Director Franz Welser-Möst. At the same time, thousands viewed the live and encore broadcasts on WVIZ/PBS and watched the concert on-demand at:

The Cleveland Women’s Orchestra presented a commemorative program in memory of the Women’s Orchestra at Auschwitz with Soprano Dorota Sobieska and WCLV Classical 104.9 Host Robert Conrad. Longtime orchestra member Hedy Milgrom (pictured), the daughter of Holocaust survivors, offered personal reflections before a capacity audience inside the Westfield Insurance™ Studio Theatre at the Idea Center®. Hundreds more tuned in to hear the live broadcast on WCLV.

Violins of Hope: Strings of the Holocaust, narrated by Academy Award-winner Adrien Brody, features Israeli violinmaker Amnon Weinstein (pictured) and his efforts to restore violins recovered from the Holocaust. From their amazing stories and Weinstein’s mission to collect and restore the instruments comes the inspiration for this one-hour documentary. Thousands of viewers watched the premiere and repeat broadcasts on WVIZ/PBS during February 2016, and even more watched and listened nationally as PBS Newshour and NPR’s Here & Now featured ideastream Senior Arts and Culture Reporter David C. Barnett’s accompanying story. More watched the documentary on-demand at:

Northeast has much to offer. According to our Listening Project, respondents report that community assets include excellent parks, Lake Erie, arts and culture, excellent academic institutions, access to exceptional healthcare and more. At the same time, Northeast Ohioans express concerns facing our community—jobs, physical infrastructure, poverty, racism and racial tension and the environment.

Community policing has been a particularly sensitive community issue. ideastream broadcasts, including interviews on The Sound of Ideas on WCPN 90.3 and roundtable discussions on Ideas on WVIZ/PBS, continue to explore this difficult community challenge. Segments and topics included:

• The Brelo trial;• State lawmakers proposing changes to our criminal

justice laws;• The plea for calm after the Brelo verdict;• Looking at the impact of Cleveland’s consent decree

formed by the City of Cleveland and the U.S. Department of Justice; and

• Dialogues about community policing with the head of Cleveland’s Community Police Unit; Cudell residents (the neighborhood of Tamir Rice, the 12-year-old shot by Cleveland Police); the head of the Patrolmen’s Association; a youth minister; and Cleveland writer RA Washington.

The expanded partnership between ideastream and The City Club of Cleveland provides for enhanced aggregation, cataloging, digitizing and making available the production of more than 100 City Club forums on broadcast, on the web and on-demand, well beyond the 50 Friday Forums as in years past, on WVIZ/PBS, 90.3 WCPN and WCLV Classical 104.9.

Living History is a community-engagement series for open conversations exploring specific events or eras in Cleveland’s history that significantly shape the development of Cleveland and the Northeast Ohio region today. At Mahall’s Bowling Alley in Lakewood, Civic Commons ideastream moderated a panel discussion to explore how the civil rights era developed in Northeast Ohio and what civil rights work looks like in our community today. Panelists included: Natoya Walker Minor, Chief of Public Affairs, City of Cleveland; Ronnie Dunn, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Cleveland State University; and Susan Hall, Director of Community Relations, Western Reserve Historical Society.

ideastream and the City Club of Cleveland, along with the Cleveland Foundation and the Cleveland Young Professional Senate, joined together to present a watch party in honor of the first Democratic Presidential Primary Debate, featuring observation from some of the region’s top political analysts. ideastream Reporter/Producer Nick Castele moderated a panel discussion featuring Erika Anthony, founding member, Cleveland Young Professional Senate; Daniel C. Coffey, Ph.D., associate professor and fellow, Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics, The University of Akron; and Michael J. Ensley, Ph.D., associate professor, Department of Political Science, Kent State University (pictured left to right). Young professionals enjoyed networking, lively conversation and, of course, the debate itself.

transparency

ideastream covers Ohio from all perspectives, delving into important issues and taking the concept of community and anytime, anywhere access to the statewide level.

The Ohio Channel, a service of Ohio’s public broadcasting stations and one of the ideastream digital broadcast channels, broadcasts live coverage from the Statehouse and much more. Programs produced by Ohio’s public broadcasters, including a televised version of The Sound of Ideas on 90.3 WCPN, expand the audience of citizens who can share ideas and experiences.

The Statehouse News Bureau is also managed by ideastream on behalf of Ohio’s public broadcasting stations. Coverage includes radio news stories, the weekly TV program The State of Ohio, online features and more. The Statehouse News Bureau is the only broadcast outlet dedicated to in-depth coverage of state government news and topics of statewide interest. The Bureau is managed by ideastream on behalf of the 23 stations in the Ohio Public Radio system and 12 public television stations.

Each week, a panel of city and state reporters, including Statehouse News Bureau Chief Karen Kasler, wrap up the week’s news on the Reporters Roundtable, which airs live Friday mornings on The Sound of Ideas on 90.3 WCPN and later that evening on Ideas on WVIZ/PBS.

“I appreciate the in-depth reporting on local and state legislative issues.”

Medical Marijuana

The SHNB team continue to report about the controversial medical marijuana issue throughout the 2015 election season, and today as we head towards the fall 2016 elections. Stories of the drama-filled campaign included coverage of: hundreds of Ohioans from across the state testifying for and against medical marijuana at the Statehouse; the dramatic rejection of the legalization of marijuana by voters last fall; the near-record amount of money the backers of the campaign spent; the formation of a task force by the Ohio House to deal with medicinal marijuana; as well as the go-ahead from the state attorney general to proceed with steps to put the issue on the fall 2016 ballot.

The depth of experience of the veteran Bureau staff has earned the respect needed to gain the access necessary for effective, award-winning coverage of the governor’s office, the General Assembly and the Ohio Supreme Court. They often appear as guest commentators on statewide radio and television programs, including The Sound of Ideas on 90.3 WCPN, Ideas on WVIZ/PBS, Columbus on the Record on WOSU-TV, All Sides with Ann Fisher on WOSU-FM, This Week on Capitol Square on the Ohio News Network and the Bureau’s own television program The State of Ohio. The success of the first ideastream American Graduate event, which involved 8th-grade Cleveland Metropolitan School District students pledging to graduate from high school, generated much excitement and momentum. That energy was later evident in the American Graduate Storytelling Contest, which was designed for students at-risk for dropping out of high school due to a personal challenge to share their success stories, specifically about a “Champion” who helped them overcome their odds.

WVIZ/PBS ideastream Education, in partnership with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s Get 2 School attendance campaign, designed an American Graduate Storytelling Contest seeking entries from 9th through 12th grade students. More than 160 students from 18 CMSD high schools entered the contest. ideastream received written narratives, video and audio recordings, poetry, sculptures, paintings and sketches illustrating the students’ will to succeed and how they overcame social, academic, physical and emotional challenges to stay in school. Every entry highlighted the role that a caring and consistent adult can play in the lives of young people. Semi-finalists and finalists, their family members and special “Champions,” were celebrated in January 2016 at special event at the Westfield Insurance Studio Theatre in the Idea Center. The top-five entrants received special prizes following live interviews with ideastream Senior Host/Producer Dee Perry.

Be Well: Healthy People, Healthy Places, Healthy Future is an effort to work with a core group of community partners to create and adopt a common set of health goals; expand coverage of socioeconomic and environmental health determinants; integrate logic modeling into the content planning processes; and expand content concerning wellness and prevention. ideastream creates a series of multiple media stories and programs that focus on the unique nature of Cleveland’s neighborhoods and addresses compelling needs within those areas. And ideastream answers questions focusing on what Cleveland’s “new economy” will look like. ideastream serves as the connector to the community to convene experts, facilitate discussions, share personal stories and describe opportunities and resources for those in need.

Neighborhood stories include: “New University Hospital Clinic for Women and Children in Midtown;” a “Crisis Abandoned,” series about lead poisoning issues in the Glenville, Ohio City and St. Clair-Superior neighborhoods; “Food Stamp Benefits and Farmer’s Markets,” in Tremont; and “Over-the-Counter Insulin,” in Kinsman.

Public Forums

Lead poisoning is an unseen but destructive health problem across Northeast Ohio. In the Be Well series, Lead: Crisis Abandoned, ideastream details what local officials and parents of children with lead poisoning, especially those in the underserved areas of Cleveland and Akron, are doing. As part of that series, Civic Commons ideastream facilitated a discussion with Greater University Circle community members at the Neighborhood Connections’ Neighbor Up Network Night. During that discussion, residents lamented about not being able to trust their tap water due to the chemicals in it.

Algae Blooms

Following the 2014 algae scare that plagued Toledo, Northeast Ohio residents have increasingly become concerned about the algae blooms in Lake Erie affecting the Greater Cleveland area. ideastream and Statehouse News Bureau reporters keep on top of the latest information by reporting about researchers, like Debbie Shordock (pictured) at the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD), testing water samples with the latest technology; following EPA assessment of guidelines to monitor safe drinking water and swimming water levels; and monitoring legislative actions of the Ohio House Agriculture Committee to ban the spread of manure and other toxins in the lake.

Fracking

Every year, the state and health of our environment continues to be a community challenge. More specifically, the advantages and disadvantages of fracking in Northeast Ohio is a story that ideastream reports with the latest news and information from all sides. For example, The Sound of Ideas on 90.3 WCPN brought together a panel—including a Case Western Reserve University science professor, a member of the Ohio Environmental Council and Jonathan Strong (pictured), board member of the Coalition to Reroute Nexus—to discuss fracking in comparison to other forms of energy development and its affect on groundwater.

WVIZ/PBS Celebrates its 50th year

ideastream is recognized for producing in-depth features and award-winning special programs, which are distributed locally, nationally and internationally. The community consistently expresses deep interest in these offerings that provide insight and foster a deeper understanding of and engagement with our region.

Enduring Trust: The History and Aspirations of The Cleveland Foundation recounted the beginnings of The Cleveland Foundation, an anchor of support for Cleveland’s current and future quality of life, founded more than 100 years ago by an unconventionally forward-thinking bank president, Frederick Goff (pictured).

Antiques Roadshow visited Cleveland in July 2015. ideastream staff and volunteers were trained for the event at the Cleveland Convention Center, and a reception was held for visiting appraisers and invited guests at the Idea Center. Appraisers saw treasures from more than 6,000 attendees. Three episodes will air in 2016. Community members, including some featured in the upcoming segments, enjoyed a special preview with the show’s Executive Producer, Marsha Bemko, in the Westfield Insurance Studio Theatre.

During 2015, WVIZ/PBS celebrated 50 years of providing programming and public service through news, public affairs, children’s programming and entertainment with community outreach activities.
