W ITH new model sales in Europe still in the doldrums, the allnew Big Bike Europe expo is being hailed as an importantnew opportunity for parts, accessory, performance, service

item and workshop equipment vendors to focus on the primary area ofthe market that has kept independent and franchised dealership profitsalive.

Of the new motorcycle sales that are happening, the trend towards the largerdisplacement markets emerging as, increasingly, the most viable sector of theindustry, is continuing.

The 'BIG BIKE EUROPE' concept owes its origins tofive years of market research and planning, with theannouncement being made nearly two years ago in2011.

During that time the trends that gave rise to thegrowing importance of the tuning and parts industry hasnot just continued, but now stands as the primary toolthrough which dealerships can generate the turn-overthey need to stay in business, and of critical importanceas Europe's aging bike park sees replacement purchasesslowing.

Of the 37 million or so PTWs (Powered Two-Wheelers) that are said to be onEurope's roads, the message that the minority that qualify as 'large displacement'contribute the majority of industry revenues and profits, is now well established andwidely accepted.

Though being staged in Germany (being Europe's traditionally strongest largedisplacement and highest mileage market), Big Bike Europe has already firmlyestablished its credentials as an international expo that is being staged in Germany, and not a German market show with somewhat of an international flavour (see thismonth's IDN cover story).

As such, Big Bike Europe is opening up a genuinely new kind of expo opportunityfor the international motorcycle industry - one that speaks to current and futuremarket realities and business prospects.

A lthough it may well be that the worst of the possible economic outcomes forthe Euro-Zone may have been averted, the last of the dramas is unlikely to be

behind us, and for sure the road back to anything approaching real growth forconsumer markets such as ours is still set to be a long and rocky one.

The motorcycle industry needs all the good news it can get, and it needs all theopportunities it can create to motivate and inspire consumers to embrace itsproducts.

While it is right that much focus is put on the importance of urban mobility to

the market's future, it is also right that the equally specialist and important largedisplacement and high mileage touring, performance and motorcycle modificationand customising markets also receive the opportunity for speciality focus - withoutsuch a forum, such a nexus, the industry will fail to be able to connect with the mostimportant of the dealership profit opportunities that it is faced with.

Big Bike Europe will deliver that opportunity to connect that nexus, that focus, and as this edition of International Dealer News went to press, hundreds ofimporters, distributors, dealers, performance engineers and customizers look set to

agree and embrace the new concept that Big Bike Europerepresents.

A date for 2014 will be announced in a few weeks, but Big Bike Europe will continue to be staged at MesseEssen, Germany, and plans are at an advanced stage forthe announcement of an additional industry initiative atBig Bike Europe that will provide a unique specialty focusfor the growing motorcycle touring and travel industry.

With large displacement motorcycles key to thetouring market, and touring bike revenues critical

to dealers and parts/accessory vendors, theannouncement will represent a continuing evolution of the Big Bike concept as onethat embraces "current and future market realities" and provides a focus on howdealership profits can be made in future years.

Whatever does happen to the wider economic factors that affect our industry, two things will remain the same.

First, that millions of Europeans will continue to look to two wheels for a widerange of commuting and leisure activity options. ACEM currently estimates that some10 percent of EU riding citizens of riding age own or have access to a motorcycleof some kind, and that two thirds of market revenues will continue to be providedby the one-third of riders who do the highest mileages on the largest displacementmotorcycles.

Second, that availability, demand and margin pressures will continue to impacton the traditional new and used motorcycle sales revenues that have fuelleddealership (and therefore industry) profits, which will continue to make parts, accessories, performance, tuning, modification, customising, service and workshoprevenues and profits an ever more import part of the equation that allows dealersto keep their doors open and provide consumers with access tothe great bikes of the future.

MV Agusta is now offering ananti-lock braking system withRLM (anti-rear wheel lift) on itsnew F4 range. The ABS system installed in theMV Agusta F4 Supersport modelis centred upon the compactand lightweight Bosch 9MPluscontrol unit. The unit containspressure sensors that interfacewith the two phonic wheels, one per wheel. In addition topreventing the locking of thewheels, thanks to the controlunit’s sophisticated algorithms, the MV Agusta ABS system isalso claimed to prevent therelative deceleration fromcausing the rear wheel to losecontact with the tarmac, thusimpeding the motorcycle fromtipping forward. This situation, which is not uncommon onsports motorcycles equippedwith extremely powerfulbraking systems, is preventedby the Bosch 9MPlus controlunit, which implements theappropriate countermeasureswhenever the rear wheel losescontact with the tarmac. The ABS system on the F4 range

offers two operating modeswhich can be easily selectedusing the handlebar controls.Normal mode ensures thesystem’s effective interventionat all times, above all when onthe road in Race mode thesystem’s intervention is limited

to the minimum indispensable, ideal for use on the track andon roadways that allow for amore extreme approach. Thesystem can also be disengagedif desired by the rider.

PIRELLI is stating that its new Angel GTtyre has been certified as number onefor mileage in the sport touringsegment. The claim was establishedand certified by the authoritativeindependent German body MotorradTestCenter which conducted a test, comparing Pirelli with Michelin PilotRoad 3, Dunlop SportmaxRoadsmart II, Bridgestone Battlax BT

023, Continental RoadAttack2 andMetzeler Roadtec Z8 Interact M/O.At the end of the test the Angel GT wasfound to be the tyre with the highestmileage compared to the competitorsin the Sport Touring segment.

Pirelli states that the new tyre offersa 30 percent increase in mileage anda one-metre braking distancereduction at 75kph, in comparison

with the Angel ST, which it is replacing. The tread design of the Angel GT is

an evolution of the Angel ST tread intechnological terms, because it hasbeen designed for the primary purposeof providing reduced and more regularwear and improved water drainage. Toprovide optimum wear, the grooves inthe tyre’s tread are directed followingthe theory of Schallamach wear waves, which describes the mechanics of awear crest forming on the tyredepending on the amount anddirection of the forces exchangedbetween the tyre and asphalt at eachpoint of the profile.

The arrangement and direction ofthe grooves was also studied in orderto optimise water drainage, and theyare claimed to allow a 10 percentreduction on the front and 16 percentreduction on the rear of the void/fill,which translates into a larger surfaceof compound in contact with theground and therefore better grip andbetter wear.

To help with the increased mileage,Pirelli has worked on the profile of thetyre. By increasing the central radius byabout 35 percent to create a lessrounded central section the size andthe proportion of the ground contact

area has been significantly modified. These changes are said to make thecontact area six percent shorter and15 percent wider compared to theAngel ST.

To support the changes to theprofile and road contact surface of theAngel GT tyre, a new rayon carcass hasbeen introduced, which has 32 percentmore linear density with 60 percenthigher rigidity compared to the AngelST tyre and at the same time it allowsfor an agile and direct ride, and highpush and grip in turns.

In addition to the technologicalspecifications, the new Angel GTmotorcycle tyre range, following thepersonalisation characteristics typicalof the latest top range Pirelli products, has a dedicated area on the side of thefront and rear tyre where a specialpersonalised label can be applied, created and purchased directly from thePirelli website www.pirellimoto.com.The on-line tool allows the user topersonalise a label choosing fromvarious fonts, colours, flags, the layoutsof the most famous internationalcircuits and many other logos. Thelabel is then sent directly to the user’saddress with a special adhesive resindesigned specifically for application onthe tyres.

FREE Spirits built its Triumph Bonneville T12.2 inorder to showcase its product line of café racerparts at the 2012 Tridays event.

The most significant change to the bike is theconversion from chain final drive to a belt drive. Thechange has also allowed the company to fit the bikewith a 17in wheel, which carries a Metzeler 160/60Sportec M3 tyre. A further change to the rear of thebike is the fitting of Bitubo absorbers mounted onFree Spirits’ own riser blocks, to raise the rear endand steepen the steering head angle.

At the front of the bike, a pair of reworked SpeedTriple forks have been mounted in Free Spirits’ tripletrees that replicate the original Bonnevillegeometry. Braking is upgraded by the use of aNewfren 320mm disc and Brembo radial callipersand reservoir.

On the engine side, Free Spirits have fitted a light

steel 180-degree air intake fitted with conical airfilters, and this is matched by a 2-into-2 exhaust instainless steel, which features 45mm head pipes. Togain the maximum benefit from these changes anECM Tfi has been installed. Completing the enginechanges are a set of Free Spirits’ engine guards.

The final Free Spirits part fitted to the Bonnevilleare the CNC machined footrests, which move thepegs 100mm back and 55mm up.

The black, white and red graphic livery on thebike’s bodywork mixes the symbols of Venice, theS. Marco’s Lion and the English flag, the Union Jack,to demonstrate the mix of English tradition andFree Spirits art.

VStreamwindshieldsfor BMW METZELER has introduced the Karoo 3 tyre as a

replacement for its existing MCE Karoo and MCEKaroo T models.

Designed for modern, large and mediumdisplacement enduro bikes which have to travel bothon asphalt and off road, the new Karoo 3 is aversatile tyre said to be capable of guaranteeing highmileage, excellent grip off road, top of the linestability and excellent handling.

The compounds in the new Karoo 3 use high

dispersibility components capable of obtaining amore uniform mix, which is claimed to providemechanical resistance to lacerations and improvemileage while maintaining high dampeningcapability.

The trapezoid shaped knobs of the tread patternhave an innovative geometry which ensuresprogressive off-road traction at various lean angles. The ‘V’ shape of the pattern provided by the knobarrangement distributes the lines of strengthtransmitted to the ground to the advantage of moreregular wear on asphalt. The centre knobs, beinglarger in size, reduce their mobility to favour greaterstability even at high speeds. The spacing varies fromthe centre to the shoulder; at the centre the knobsare spaced further apart for better penetration in softterrain, offering better traction, while on the shoulderthe knobs are closer together in order to guaranteemore rubber on the road and hence more grip whenleaning into a turn on asphalt.

POLINI’S Evolution CDI has been developedexclusively for competitive track use. It has beendesigned to use as little battery power as possible,as low as 0.7Ah. A 4.5Ah battery for a 50cc scootergrants a no-stop use of approximately six hours.

Energy loss generated by the stator/flywheel hasbeen eliminated, and even if it does not increase theengine’s power, the end result is said to be anincrease in the power transmitted to the wheel givingmore acceleration and speed.

Each CDI contains a connection cable for customadvance mapping, and the programme can bedownloaded from the CD included in the package.

The Evolution CDI is available in three differentapplications: 50cc Piaggio scooter engines, 50cc

Minarelli scooter engines, and a universal CDI kit. Theignitions for Piaggio and Minarelli engines comewith a pick-up support and signal. The universal CDIdoes not include a pick-up support and signal, but itcan be used on any engine that has a flywheel witha pick-up.

IN March total PTW (Powered TwoWheeler) new model registrationsin Germany were down by amassive minus 19,58 percent to21.683 from 26.963 in March2012.This is the lowest Marchsales figure in Germany forseveral years - down from 24.949in 2011, 24.854 in 2010 and fromthe 22.074 total PTW new modelsales seen in March 2009.Within these figures motorcycle sales

were down by -16,70 percent to 16.272units from 20.081 in March 2012. Thisis also the poorest level of first quartermotorcycle sales in Germany for severalyears - down from 18.229 in 2011,18.487 in 2010, and only just ahead ofthe 15.594 new motorcycle sales seenin March of 2009.It is widely being analysed in

Germany as a result of the very badweather in March - seen right acrossnorthern Europe in fact - but theweather has been poor for most of thefirst three months of the year inGermany and elsewhere for at least four

out of the last five years, so the worrynow is that consumer confidence istaking another hit and that, despitesome encouraging long-term signs forEuro-zone economies in northernEurope, the decline is now structuralagain.Regardless of the cause, the impact

on dealership revenues and down-stream (aftermarket) spending will beprofound. What is more, the picture ismuch the same when March is taken inthe context of the full first quarter inGermany.Total PTW sales are down by -15,26

percent at 30.604 units for the year todate, compared to 36.116 for the firstquarter of 2012, 34.467 in 2011,31.847 in 2010 and 35.860 in 2009.In motorcycle sales terms the first

quarter saw a -12,92 percent drop innew registrations, at 22.957 comparedto 26.364 in 2012, 24.927 in 2011,23.160 in 2010 and 24.735 in 2009.The two years of modest growth seen

in Germany in 2011 and 2010 with totalPTW sales for the year up to 85.275

from a 2010 low of 80.208 now looksto be under threat with the mostimportant sales month posting such adecline. If there is ‘bounce’ in the April and

May numbers, then short-term, andespecially weather factors may turn outto have been the primary reason, but asApril came towards an end, the reportsthat we here at IDN have been receivingsuggest that, at best, the bellwetherGerman market may be broadly levelwith last year when, to give acomparison with the importance ofMarch there, the market was worth12.728 motorcycle registrations in2012, and 18.365 total PTWregistrations. While some recovery in used

inventory activity and pricing is beingreported in Germany and elsewhere, thepicture for the total European market isequally bleak. The latest data released by ACEM for

Europe as a whole shows the total PTW
