W ITH effect of this 114th edition, International Dealer News(IDN) is announcing that it is to revert back to six issues ayear, on an alternate-monthly basis.

Down the years the frequency of IDN has varied. From six editions a year, upto monthly, and various frequency formulas in between. Most recently we hadbeen producing ten editions a year and had hoped to be able to publish eachmonth from this year onwards. However, coincident with an edition in which we present a major review of

35 plus years of Japanese motorcycle manufacturer European export statistics,it is no surprise that we too have had to respond to the same market forces thathave been affecting our readers. From franchised dealers and the motorcycle

manufacturers they sell for, right through to theparts, accessory and apparel vendors whoseproducts are needed to fuel dealership workshoprevenues and power showroom profits through thevoid left by declining PTW sales, and whoseadvertising pays the bills to produce IDN, we are allsubject to the harsh realities of the present economicclimate and ours is an industry where its effects havecome on top of multiple additional issues that havebeen challenging unit sales for years. From licensing and training, though safety and regulatory impacts, the

motorcycle industry has been under consistent pressure ever since the mid 1990'swhen the first EU Motorcycle Multi-Directive hardened up on emissions and noiseregulations.

S ince that time age-related licensing changes, increased training costs andcomplexity, further emissions and noise tightening, and many other market

threats have played out against the background of an industry that has seensales decline as never before. From a peak around the year 2000, sales stuttered then recovered in the years

following, only to now plunge into uncharted waters in terms of new unit sales-decline since the credit crunch, the banking crisis, the recession and, mostrecently, since the single currency itself started to come under such sustainedand still unresolved pressure. With consumer confidence at an all time low, and youth unemployment across

Europe at an all time high, the prospects for Europe's motorcycle market havenever looked worse. Indeed the statistics we report here in this edition of IDN,especially with regard to the once strategically fundamental performance of the'Big Four' Japanese motorcycle manufacturers, paints a picture of an industrywhose decline in Europe, could be argued, on paper at least, to be bordering onthe terminal.Ten to fifteen years ago there were some 10,000 motorcycle dealerships

across Europe who held at least some kind of Japanese manufacturer franchise.Relative to the decline in unit sales that number has not yet fallen by anything

like as much as it should have done, but based on our own reader databasemaintenance, and other independent and manufacturer sources, it is now in theregion of 7,000 such shops at best. That the number overall is not yet a lot lower

is due in large part to the many new smaller style stores that have opened up incentral and eastern Europe since the early to mid 1990s, and to the fact that oursstill remains more of a passion driven market than one fuelled by sentiment-freefinancial prudence.Whereas the pre-downturn number of franchised Japanese brand dealerships

were able to operate from the profits generated by the sale of an average ofbetween 350,000 and 400,000 unit sales a year, the network of Japanesemotorcycle franchise stores in Europe received south of 150,000 units last year(the lowest figure since 1976) and the 2013 year-end figure may be as low as100,000 to 120,000.

D espite the growing strength (relativelyspeaking) of European manufacturers such as

BMW, Ducati and Triumph, the impact on themarket's capital base of losing so many sales soquickly has been dramatic and, as evidenced by theever decreasing number of parts, accessory andapparel booths at shows such as INTERMOT andEICMA, the knock-on effect, despite theproportionately increased importance of such salesto dealership profits, has been huge.In the case of IDN, as with other consumer and

trade motorcycle magazines, that impact hasprimarily been through the reduced advertising budgets available, and in ourcase the absence of a cover price or (so far) subscription fee, advertising revenuehas been our sole source of income. Therefore, while the digital edition of IDN will continue to be free of charge

to all those who wish to make sure they receive the link to each edition (it isalways available for online reading or download from the www.idnmag.comwebsite), we are also now going to be introducing a subscription fee for theprinted edition of IDN (see details elsewhere in this August/September edition)and stepping up distribution of industry and vendor company and product newsthrough our IDN 'E-Club' service - the oldest and first European motorcycleindustry electronic news service. We will, of course, monitor the market closely and review our frequency (back

upwards hopefully) if and when conditions improve, however, with 15 years and114 editions under our belt, the priority is to ensure that the International DealerNews brand continues and, as the only international motorcycle industrymagazine in Europe, continues to develop the excellence of market coverage thathas become its hard-earned hallmark. There will be no compromise in terms of quality of breadth of reporting, and

in an industry which becomes even more international every year, IDN willcontinue to be an every-increasingly important resource.

likely to be in the region of 150,000 atbest by the end of this year based onthe current trend, the market there willhave declined by over 70 percent injust 13 years.

As seen elsewhere in this edition ofInternational Dealer News, the latestJapanese motorcycle manufacturerexport statistics continue to show thatthe pressure on their European dealersis unrelenting.

Motorcycle exports by the Japanese‘Big Four’ to their Europeansubsidiaries in May this year weredown by -25.92 percent over 2012 toan historic low of 6,815 units for amonth that until 2009 had never beenworth less than three times thatfigure, and that as recently as 2007had been worth more than 33,000units.

I ndeed, the continuing collapse insales of Japanese-made motorcycles

in Europe is now reaching historicallylow levels – numbers that are nowlower than those seen in the mid andlate 1970s when the Japanesesuperbike revolution was sweeping all

before it and laying down the strategicfoundations of an altogether newmotorcycle market in Europe.

For the year to date, Japanese250cc+ exports to Europe are downby -26.53 percent at 64,560 units. That itself is the lowest Japanesemarket performance figure for morethan 30 years, and with exports forthe full year unlikely to be more than120,000 units, dealer sales here willhave plunged to lower levels thananything seen since 1975.

In tha t yea r, Japanesemanufacturer exports to Europetotalled 96,000 units. They jumped tonearly 150,000 the following year(1976) and never dipped below thatuntil 2012.

Indeed, they reached 318,000 in1981, peaking again at 354,000 in1992 and reaching an all-time high of461,000 in the year 2000.

Since then, excepting for 4 years ofgrowth that saw them reach 420,000in 2007 (just prior to the start of theglobal economic downturn),Japanese motorcycle sales in Europe

ACCORDING to data released bythe China Association ofAutomobile Manufacturers(CAAM) for the first 6 months of2013, Chinese motorcycleproduction decreased by -3.05percent to 11,274,501 units, ofwhich 1,154,073 units werethree wheelers (up 2.62 percenton the first 6 months of 2012).In June specifically, productionwas down -2.26 percentcompared to June 2012, at1,965,604, which was down by-0.29 percent on May this year.Data for the period from Januaryto May this year showed exportstotalling 3,782,800, which wasup by 4 percent on the first fivemonths of 2012; this is said tomean that exports are runningat their second highest level forthe last five years, and totalled$2,035 billion in value.

According to leading Chinesemotorcycle industry magazineChinamotor, domestic Chinesemotorcycle sales were down by-6.66 percent (5,680,800) for theperiod from January to May thisyear, accelerating a decline indomestic sales, with overallproduction and sales beingdescribed as dropping to “thelowest level in recent years”.

Chinamotor goes on to say thatwith an increasing number ofcities banning and limiting theuse of motorcycles, more Chineseconsumers are buying carsinstead of two-wheelers.Small cc units (150cc and 250ccespecially) are maintaining“rapid growth” and this is said tobe due to increased internationaldemand for small bikes.

In terms of large displacementmotorcycles, Chineseproduction, as is widely known,is very small indeed, withimports dominating the top endof the market. For the first fivemonths of this year, productionof large displacement machineswas up by 2.89 percent, but thisrepresents a sector of just3,710 units. There are said to be some 98motorcycle manufacturers inChina, and despite productionand sales uncertainties, it isreported that the sector’s totalindustrial output value, industrial sales value, operatingrevenue, and total profit was upin the first four months of thisyear compared to 2012.Industry-wide operatingrevenue is put at 39,313 billionyuan for the first four monthsof this year. •

DATA released by the JapaneseAutomotive and Motorcycle tradeassociation (JAMA) has revealedthat exports of motorcycles of over250cc by the big four Japanesemanufacturers are still in decline ona worldwide basis; with exports toEurope continuing to fall off a cliff.

In June, worldwide Japaneseexports were down by -18.36 percent(at 19,668 units) compared to June2012, with European exports down by-35.38 percent (5,553 units)compared to 2012 – which is believedto be the lowest June number for more

than a decade. On a year to date basis, worldwide

Japanese motorcycle exports are downby -16.46 percent at 168,890 units, with exports to Europe spectacularlydown by -27.32 percent (70,113units).

In terms of total PTWs (Powered TwoWheelers), Japanese manufacturer

exports to Europe were down by -29.22percent (they'd been down -22.73percent in May this year). Worldwideexports fell by -28.11 percent (-8.51percent in May).

The picture is somewhat better in theUnited States though where monthlyJapanese PTW imports fell in June foronly the second time this year so far

(-17.8 percent, as opposed to growthof 5.32 percent in May) with year-to-date figures for the first six months of2013 now showing US imports ofJapanese made two-wheelers ashaving grown by 0.26 percent - downa little from the 3.95 percent growthseen for the year-to-date to the end ofMay this year. ` •

H AVING agreed what wastermed a “strategicall iance” some 18

months ago, the ties betweenErik Buell’s post Harley-Davidsonenterprise Erik Buell Racing (EBR)and Indian motorcyclemanufacturing giant HeroMotoCorp have deepened.

In what is described as their firstever equity partnership with anoverseas company, Hero has taken a49.2 percent stake in the share capitalof Troy, Wisconsin based EBR, in returnfor a $25m investment.

Hero, the world’s largest motorcycleand powered two wheeler (PTW)manufacturer by volume, are targetingtotal annual sales of 10m units in thenext few years, and are making theEBR investment through their newly-incorporated and wholly ownedAmerican subsidiary HMCL (NA).

When their initial relationship withErik Buell was unveiled, Hero madeno secret that it was looking to adddesign and engineering pedigree thatwould allow it to become a player onthe global (and in particular North

American and European)large displacement stages, with ambitions to entermult ip le motorcyc lesegments with a number ofdifferent platforms.

Mr Pawan Munjal,Managing Director andChief Executive Officer ofHero in India said of the EBR deal thatthe equity partnership is “reflective ofour long-term vision of transformingHero MotoCorp into a truly global two-wheeler major with footprints spreadacross continents, offering a widerange of technologically-advancedtwo-wheelers.”

H e went on to say that this was “anatural extension of our existing

relationship with EBR, which is goingto further strengthen our strategicalliance. “As we go on spreading ourfootprint in new international markets,we will look at having extendedcenters of our own R&D at multiplelocations around the world, developing two-wheelers for ourglobal customers.

“Our evolving relationship with

EBR is an initiative in thatdirection.” Hero will nowhave two directors andone observer on the boardof EBR, but the companysays that there “will be noorganisational changes atEBR” and that “Mr. ErikBuell will continue to be

its Chairman and CEO.”In addition to its new subsidiary in

the United States the company hasalso recently established a whollyowned European subsidiary in TheNetherlands.

At present EBR is noted for itslimited number production of theacclaimed and multi-award winning1190RS - an aluminium-framedliquid-cooled v-twin 1190RSsuperbike that they launched in 2011.Weighing in at under 400 lbs, the 1190RS retails in the US for $39,999 andup, and delivers 175hp from its 72.6cu. in/1190cc power-plant - an enginewhich is basically a bored-out Buelldesign based on the 72 degree 1125ccHelicon engine made for Buell byBombardier’s Rotax engine

manufacturing subsidiary in Austria.

F rom Hero’s perspective Buell bringsmuch to the table of their ambition

- one of the world’s most respectedchassis and performance engineers, the background Beull has of trying tolaunch several new bikes (such as theBuell Barracuda B2) and enter newmarket sectors with the Buell brand(such as the dirt bike market with aplanned 450cc engine also by Rotax)provides Hero with access to thecontacts and contracts of an industryplayer with a proven ability to developand produce multiple platforms.

Indeed, given his experience withHarley-Davidson’s air-cooledSportster engines, the internationalindustry rumours include speculationthat dirt bikes and the relativesimplicity of air-cooled v-twin cruiserplatform manufacturing may be earlyinitiatives en-route to performancestreet bikes. Either way, thecollaboration will clearly enable theIndian company to broaden itsmanufacturing competencies and playcatch-up with the internationalinitiatives already taken by its principaldomestic rivals Bajaj Auto and TVSMotors both of whom(coincidentally?) also choose TheNetherlands as the base for theirEuropean corporate structures.www.heromotocorp.com

Lotus motorcycle in developmentLOTUS Motorcycles is a new company, which has been established to designand build motorcycles bearing thename of the classic British sports carmanufacturer. Lotus Motorcycles is a joint project

between Kodewa, car designer DanielSimon and the Holzer Group, and itintends to create the Lotus C-01motorcycle, which it says will reflect acombination of lifestyle, design andhigh-end technology, using carbon, titanium and aerospace quality steel inthe production process. The C-01, with all its top notchcomponents and materials, is first andforemost emotional, heartbreaking, attimes playfully retro, and always clearlya Lotus. Lotus is a glamorous namewith a rich history, and the C-01celebrates it proudly: the shapes of themarvellous Lotus 49 were a maininspiration, and all colour schemes payhomage to iconic Lotus racing liveries,

such as the dashing black and gold. The intersection of past and futurealways fascinates, and so does theunique idea of the C-01.”The development, production and

R&G has released a range of damage protectionand bolt-on styling products for both the 2013820 Hypermotard and 820 Hyperstrada and isoffering heavy duty engine case covers and carbonengine case sliders to protect the motor, and thecompany has a version of its Aero crash protectorthat fits to the frame to keep as much of the bikeoff the ground as possible in the event of a fall. Theteardrop-shaped ‘bungs /mushrooms’ are constructed from high-densityPolyethylene (HDPE), developed to wear and notshatter, R&G also utilises a special grade of steelbolts to help absorb an impact by bending, ratherthan snapping or twisting their mounting points onthe bike.

Further protection products available include

fork protectors, radiator guards, spindle sliders andshocktube.

AGV has launched the AGV Pista GP Soleluna (sunand moon) limited edition, which reproduces thegraphics on Valentino Rossi’s 2013 race helmet(except for other sponsor’s logos, visor componentsand accessories).

The Pista GP’s graphics, designed as usual by thedesigner Aldo Drudi, have the long rays of the Sun atthe front in yellow. This is Valentino’s favourite colouras it symbolises energy. The rays at the back minglewith an electric blue moon. Between the colourareas, the carbon fibre shell, which makes the helmetso very light, shows through.

Designed with AGV ‘Extreme Standards’ the outershell is made entirely of layered carbon fibre availablein four sizes, and this is combined with a complexmulti-density inner EPS lining and a unique seamless

comfort lining design to enable the helmetto be perfectly fitted to the rider, by meansof adjusting the head lining both in shapeand pitch on the rider’s head. The design isintended to cut to the minimum any interferencewith the racing suit and protective hump and tooptimise safety even at high speed. The spoiler hasbeen designed to detach from the helmet in theevent of an accident to increase the passive safety ofthe helmet.

The visor component area has been drasticallyreduced and this allows the space saved to be usedto increase the thickness of the impact absorptionmaterial. The 3.3mm flat racing visor can easily beremoved, as can the washable inner components. The visor is Pinlock ready and the helmet comes with

ÖHLINS has created a universal fork cartridge kit thatbrings TTX technology to MX bikes.

The new MX fork cartridge kit is based on TTXtechnology, which the company says means apositive pressure balance in the system, thanks to thetwin tube technology. The gas pressurised dividingpiston inside pushes the hydraulic fluid back into thelow pressure side with the end result of betterperformance and no cavitation.

The 8mm steel hollow piston rod makes the kitlighter, and the main piston diameter is 22mm. Allother parts are in aluminium and the onlyinconsistency will be the length of the kit dependingon the model of the bike.

The cartridge has external adjustment for bothcompression and rebound and the springs areordered separately to suit rider’s choice of spring.

Installation is simply a case of removing thestandard fork insert and replacing it with the Öhlinscartridge.

BRITISH helmet manufacturer Reevu, known formaking helmets with an integrated rear view mirrorsystem, has developed prototypes of helmets withHead-up display - using their own existing patentsand the optical system of the present Reevu helmetsto project relevant information onto the visor.

In the already available Reevu MSX1-Integral andFSX1-System helmets, a picture is projected throughthe helmet shell through an opening at the rear ofthe helmet, which arrives on a small mirror above theactual field of sight - which can also be used for otherdata to be projected. These won't have to be seen in

the small miror any longer in the future, but could bevisible straight away in the upper part of the visor.

Possible uses are especially navigation, but alsotelemetric data of the motorcycle. Also in racing newperspectives are opened up as lap times anddistances could be accessed permanently by the riderwithout looking away from the track.

The development is still ongoing, but the companyis positive that after developing the rear view mirror, which was doubted by many, it will also be possibleto soon also bring the first Head-up display in ahelmet onto the market.

IT is hard to know who has been thebusier so far this year - BMW’s Berlinfactory or its Munich basedmanagement!

First of all the factory, following recordsales last year (up by some 15 percent on2011), the company appears to be on-track for another record year with theannouncement that it is up by 9.7percent in the first six months of 2013 at64,941 vehicles, (against 59,189 for thefirst six months of 2012); with June thisyear being up by 22.1 percent (at 12,541vehicles for the month, against 10,271in June 2012).

Meanwhile BMW’s management hasalso had a manic first six months.Following January's announcement of a“long-term strategic realignment of thebrand” that started with the sale ofHusqvarna (which it only bought in2007), in order to exit the dirt bike marketin favour of new priorities in the urbanand e-mobility sectors, the companycapped the first half of the year with its

announcement that this will be its finalseason in World Superbikes (which it onlyentered in 2009) in favour of customerracing support.

Husqvarna was sold to KTM CEOStefan Pierer in a deal that kept thebrand away from KTMs links with BajajAuto in India. The structure cleared theway for the announcement some threemonths later of a new strategic alliancewith TVS Motor Company in India, analliance aimed at getting the BMWbrand into the sub 500cc market.

Meanwhile modest “face-lifts” havebeen unveiled to BMW’s existing largedisplacement and scooter line-up for2014 (though don't be surprised if theyhave a surprise up their sleeve for theEICMA 'Milan' Show later this year), andthe company has seen a recordattendance at its 13th annual BMWMotorrad Days at Garmisch-Partenkirchen as the company markedthe 90th anniversary of its entry into themotorcycle industry. •

BMW announce recordresults and WSBK exit

B MWs sale of Husqvarna toKTM CEO Stefan Piererhas resulted in two

specialist brands that havecommon roots coming togetherin a three-brand group wheresynergies could be said to befighting in a crowded space. With KTM, Husaberg and nowHusqvarna all under the sameownership (well, nearly the sameownership - at this stageHusqvarna is owned by a StefanPierer corporate vehicle, which forthe time being keeps it fromentanglement with Bajaj Auto'sjust-under 50 percent stake in theKTM group) it looks like the endfor the technologically admiredHusaberg brand.Husqvarna has announced that it

will be trading as HusqvarnaSportmotorcycle GmbH fromOctober this year, just weeksbefore it unveils a new 2014 line-up at the EICMA 'Milan' Show thatwill see it combining “its own richheritage with Husaberg's state-of-the-art technology”.

Meanwhile Husaberg hasconceded that its 2014 model

range (announced in May) will beits last as an independent brand, marking “the final chapter in thecompany's celebrated history.”Earlier this year Stefan Pierer hadconfirmed that he was to withdrawthe Husqvarna brand from roadbikes, and that the first models willbe launched in India in two yearstime as a result of the Bajaj Autotie-up.

models, in the same year that KTM sells an initial 14,5 percent stake to BajajAuto in India

partnership with TVS Motors of India, and exits World Superbikes; meanwhileKTM closes the new Husqvarna factory in Italy, and signals the end of the 25year Husaberg brand story
