ACEM has announced that itsannual conference will take placeon January 29th 2014.

The theme will be "A Global Visionfor the Powered Two-WheelerMarket".

ACEM say that "while theeconomic crisis is putting pressure onthe entire EU motorcycle sector, newmarkets have sprung up in emergingcountries, due to improving livingconditions and growing mobilityneeds worldwide, the appeal of ouriconic brands and our industry's highquality innovation".

ACEM are pointing to Brazil,China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, thePhilippines, Taiwan, Thailand andVietnam as among the mostpromising new markets for itsmembers. It is against this backdrop thatACEM says the EU must "strive to

ACEM claims that the lack ofharmonisation where standards andtechnica l spec i f i cat ions areconcerned generates "trade-disruptive environments. The creation

INTERNATIONAL DEALER NEWS - DEC/JAN 2013 3

Page 4: IDN 116 DEC/JAN 2013/14

BY the time the next print edition of International Dealer News ispublished (February/March), most markets in Europe will knowwhat their final new motorcycle sales numbers were for 2013.

Although volumes at this time of the year are relatively low, as this edition wentto press (late November) it appeared that several of Western Europe’s primary markets(Germany, Spain, UK) were seeing some return to growth, or, in the case of Italy, adramatic reduction in the rate of decline.15 months ago, at INTERMOT in 2012, ACEM Secretary General, Jacques

Compagne, told the assembled industry that a major statistical survey that hisorganisation’s staff had conducted suggested that while 2013 may not see any totalgrowth, the indications were that the rate of decline might see the year delivermotorcycle sales broadly level with 2012.For most of the past 24 months, it has looked likely

that total European new PTW registrations might havefallen to as low as around 1 million units for the yearby the end of 2013. This is from a 2007/8 figure of justunder 3 million total units.

Wherever the final figure settles, it does appear thatPTW sales in Europe have now been in decline

for so long, and have now reached such a low level, that even if the next few yearswill only see market replacement rather than genuine growth, the product cycle withinthe overall bike park will mean that replacement activity will start. The first sign of this is likely to be the long hoped for price stabilisation and increase

in demand for pre-owned units. While this has happened in some parts of Europe, indeed most markets at some stage or another in the past five years, it has provento be a much less reliable indicator of underlying trend than traditionally has alwaysbeen the case.As reported elsewhere in this edition of International Dealer News, market

sentiment (certainly as far as the motorcycle parts, accessory, performance and servicesectors are concerned) appears to have achieved its first vital step on the road torecovery, even if new and pre-owned unit movements have not yet done so.A notoriously fickle and often confusing bellwether, market sentiment can become

manifest in many ways. At EICMA, it lacked any statistical integrity, excepting thatthe majority of aftermarket parts and accessory vendors and exhibitors that we hereat International Dealer News met with, were at least sanguine about businessprospects. There appears now to be a reassuring outbreak of “it is what it is” about forecasts

for 2014 and beyond, but given where the market has been headed for the past fewyears, that itself is an important dose of realism.

Nobody we met (well, with a few honourable exceptions) was talking in terms ofdouble-digit sales growth for 2013, but as a result of five years of housekeeping

and the same replacement cycle impacts that may filter through to new and pre-owned unit sales, the majority of the vendors we spoke with thought that as abusiness, they had probably done “okay” in the past 12 months (in profit if not salesterms), and many were in fact pointing to low single digit growth in sales. If this is true, and it proves to be sustainable for the next 36 months, then I think

everybody would prefer that kind of market to the one that we have been enduring

since the Lehman apocalypse in September 2008.Back then, the industry had gathered at Cologne for INTERMOT, with most people

still in denial about the likely impacts of a global economic downturn that many werestill hoping would simply turn out to be media and Wall Street hype.Personally, because of our involvements in the domestic US motorcycle market,

we had already had a taste of what the collapse in mortgage securities really meant, but even so the almost complete collapse (relatively speaking!) in demand for newmotorcycles in Europe has taken even me by surprise.

If the ‘Milan-Vibe’ that we detected has any substance to it at all, then it may wellfollow the pattern seen in the domestic US motorcycle industry. That pattern has been one where certain traditionally strong and indeed major

sectors of the industry have continued to decline, withsuch growth as there has been coming from twoprimary factors. The first is a market that has seen spending on high-

ticket parts and accessories continue to be muchreduced, with most motorcycle dealerships continuingto pay such bills that they have not been able toeliminate almost entirely through workshop and

service related activity. That activity includes discretionary spending on performance and tuning, and some

accessorising, especially where models are ageing, but the days of people happilythrowing 5,000 of any currency at the parts department manager just because theyfancy doing so, are not going to return any time soon. The second primary driver to market growth has been the change in the nature of

the market, and that is likely to also be the case here in Europe.

The primary characteristic of that change, or rather of those changes, is the evolutionof consumer riding and ownership experience expectations. That has been seenthrough the changes in the relative balance sheet performances between Japaneseand European / American brands and the product offers with which they have beendriving showroom traffic. However, during this time one of the primary features of the Japanese motorcycle

industry has been the near silence where new model development and launches havebeen concerned. If there is a secondary market impression that I take away from the EICMA

experience this year, and the feedback I am getting from those who attended AIMExpoand (especially Japanese) OE dealer conventions in the United States in the past threemonths, it is that the land of the rising horsepower may soon be heading for the redline again.

EVERY year German aftermarketparts specialist LSL prepares aone-off build, based on a newproduction bike, as a rollingshowcase for its new parts. This

year’s chosen model is the MT-09 from Yamaha, which thecompany has rebuilt as an‘Urban Roadster’.The most significant change to

the bike has been the move tospoked wheels from Kineo togive the bike a retro look. Thenthe rider’s position has beenchanged by the use of a morecontoured and higher seat, which is said to help preventthe rider sliding forward. Thechange of the handlebars todrag style handlebars furtherhelps to improve rider comfort. In order to allow the fitting ofthe bars, LSL black anodizedhandlebar clamps are used, andthe bars themselves are fittedwith LSL grips, LSL adjustablelevers, bar end mirrors and barend weights.A further change to the ridercontact points is the use ofeight-way adjustable 2Sliderearsets, which are matched toLSL passenger pegs and like thefront brakes fitted withanthracite coated stainless steelbrake hoses.Additional changes to the bikeinclude fitting of a LSL Urban-

line headlight, mini indicators,Neo LED taillight, aluminiumlicense plate holder, crash bungsfor the frame, forks andswingarm, and swingarmpaddock stand bobbins.

In that time the company hascontinued to rack up race success, the latest being with MaverickViñales and his team Calvo takingthe Moto 3 World Championship onhis Sprint Filter equipped KTM.

Sprint are able to manufacture inmost popular filter media, but it iswith a patented 80 micronpolyester, that is composed ofthreads of just five micron diameter, that they have been able to deliver

As I mention elsewhere in thisedition of International DealerNews (Comment, page 4) the‘market sentiment’ that we here atIDN detected while pounding the

aisles of the Fiera Milano a few weeks ago wasin marked contrast to the overwhelminglynegative vibe that has hung over the halls inthe past few years.

Actually describing it as positive may, in reality, beoverstating the fact, but compared to the deeplypessimistic ambiance of the show in recent years, therewas a new realism about business prospects for thenext months and years that is often the first, primary, and necessary precursor of growth.

With a few honourable exceptions (in bothdirections) the majority of exhibitors and visitingvendors that we met and spoke with were reportingthat 2013 had been an “okay” year. This is primarilybecause the majority of business finally, if belatedly, responded to the downturn some 24 months ago asthey realised that this recession was no 36-month blip.

As new motorcycle registration statisticsthroughout Europe, but especially in Italy, wore awayat confidence like a dripping tap of constant bad news, those who failed to embrace the true scale of thedifficulties that the market faced following thecollapse of capital markets in 2008, remained indenial.

Those who acted quickly are those who still havethe bright and shiny booths. Indeed, congratulationsto everybody who exhibited at EICMA this yearbecause they truly are the survivors.

As motorcycle ownership becomes increasinglyconcentrated in the hands of the most dedicated andpassionate of riders (statistically speaking) those parts, accessory, performance and tuning, and service andworkshop product vendors who are still “in-play” areseeing those important core characteristics of anindustry where (relatively speaking) the miles are stillbeing done, show modest, single-digit growth indemand.

There is no question that the industry remains underserious price pressure, and that is as much due to the

internet/mail order as it is to low demand or over-supply, but those who are offering mid-market andpremium grade products have reasons to view 2014and beyond with a little more confidence than thosewhose price-points leave little room for margin orprofit.

It is conspicuous that booth sizes have continuedto be reduced, as marketing budgets continue to bescrutinised, but this year there was less (apparently)unsold open space in the six halls used for the showthan was the case in 2011 and 2012.

It has been rightly pointed out that in years such asthis, it might be as much due to there being noINTERMOT as any other factors, but that said the trendtowards fewer ‘international’ vendors taking theirown booths, and instead focusing their annual Italianmarket presence by booth-sharing with theirdistributors, would suggest that, in reality, the marketin Italy has started to improve if expo square meterage(regardless of who is buying it) is any kind ofbellwether.

The majority of vendors appear to be not just

resigned, but now strangely at peace with themuch reduced level of business available to them inItaly. Many I spoke with confessed that the process ofgetting to that point had been tough, involving theshedding of personnel and overheads, and of seeingmany good customers reduce their orders or disappearaltogether.

In a market where the sales statistics have been justso bad for so long, there is no surprise there, but manyof those vendors are reporting that even if profits fromtheir much lower sales are also much reduced, theyare at least now making money from the vastlyreduced market.

A few months ago I wrote in quite pessimistic termsabout the apparent lack of innovation and newproduct development taking place in the market inEurope.

It has always been a truism that the twin pillars ofrecessionary survival are R&D and marketing spend.

Well, it looks like that the industry has got at leasthalf of the equation right in that, actually, as will beseen in this and subsequent editions of InternationalDealer News, there is after all quite a lot of newproduct activity taking place – especially in terms ofhard parts and accessories, and especially in terms ofapparel safety features.

Unfortunately for people in a position such as I (andthe likes of EICMA and INTERMOT) who aredependent on marketing budgets, it would appearthat the second pillar is still stunted. It would appearthat the primary problem has been that having spentsuch budget as they have on getting new productsready, nobody has had any money left with which totell anybody about them yet – ourselves included!

The E-bike market appears to be headed towardssecond stage maturity (it isn’t quite there yet, but thereare signs of product improvement), and critical serviceitem areas such as batteries and their diagnostics, filtertechnology, oils and brake products are showing signsof life – 'new-tech' is improving product performanceand productionisation improvements are deliveringbetter products at market-friendly prices.

The exhaust industry still remains in chronic over-supply, but the ‘Cinderella’ of aftermarket parts andaccessories, the all important and often overlookedsuspension market, appears to be innovating andprogressing as never before, as established playersand new entrants alike find ever more reliable ways ofdelivering real world handling improvements thatriders can live with, without requiring degrees inmechanical engineering.

If expo square meterage really is a measure of howwell a market sector is (or is not) performing, then thehelmet and apparel industry must be the ultimateyardstick.

Until a few years ago it looked as though the sizeand number of helmet and accessory vendor boothsat EICMA and INTERMOT could, on their own, fill twocomplete halls, however, now both the number ofbooths being bought by such exhibitors, and the totalsquare meterage they are investing in is, with a fewexceptions, massively reduced on the real estate andarchitecture of the past.

Writing this article three weeks after a show likeEICMA has advantages as well as disadvantages. Theadvantages all revolve around remaining impressionsbeing the lasting and hopefully more accurateimpressions about the experience.

In that respect the overriding and lasting impressionthat I take into 2014 from the 71st edition of EICMAis that regardless of what is happening to the newmotorcycle registration figures in Italy, and

Touratech: The German adventure touring specialist hasentered the suspension market with a system for theBMW R1200 GS developed for them by specialist Dutchsuspension manufacturer TracTive. Their system is a DDA(dynamic damping) Plug & Travel that is said to offer “acompletely new riding experience particularly on demandingtours”. Sensors register irregularities in the ground and sendthis information to electronic controls which adjust thespring elements in a matter of milliseconds.Electromagnetically controlled valves adjust the flow of oil inthe fork, increasing or reducing the damping effect. Thegreatest challenge affecting semi-active suspensions has alwaysbeen capturing of information from the original plugs on anECU and translating that data so it could be used to control anaftermarket retrofit product. Jo Glaser, Touratech’s suspensionproduct manager, says that what makes this system stand out isthat it is easily interchangeable with BMW’s own DDC system.“Touratech’s DDA Plug & Travel suspension uses the existing plugs and is operatedthrough the switches that are already built into the handlebar. The system isintegrated into the motorbike through BMW’s original ECU”. This means the rider cancontinue to use all the BMW standard drivingmodes and loading presets as well as customsettings. Tom Glazemakers, who heads up theTracTive suspension team that has helpedTouratech to develop the system, told IDN that“our front shock has a 46mm diametercompared to BMW’s 36mm, and is made inaluminium tube rather than the original steel. We are able to keep the temperature muchlower and improve the stability of thedampening action, therefore improving thehandling performance and durability of thesystem”. Tom went on to say that “one of themost important features of the system we havedeveloped for Touratech is the use of ourpatented bypass valve. Activated inmilliseconds, the reaction of the suspension iselectronically tuned all the way fromcompletely closed to fully open. This is adeparture from the basically automotivetechnology used by manufacturers such asBMW with their CNC style mechanical valves”;www.touratech.de

NOLAN Group has released details of its 2014helmet range that includes the top-of-the-line X-802R Ultra Carbon lightweight racing helmet.

Three different outer shell sizes are used byNolan to cover the six helmet sizes. Thecompany says that this design feature allowsthe helmet’s weight and volume (and henceits aerodynamic drag) to be kept to a minimum, proportionate to the rider’s head size.

An adjustable aerodynamic spoiler is integratedin the rear part of the shell. Said to be the product ofextensive wind tunnel testing and racetrackexperience, the spoiler optimises the helmet’saerodynamics during riding, improving stability athigh speeds and helping to vent hot air from theinterior through outlet vents integrated directly in thespoiler. Its profile, and aerodynamic performance, canbe adjusted to one of two available configurationsto better suit different riding positions and styles.

Touring riders are being offered a new modularX-Lite brand X-1003 composite flip-up. KNOX’ new winter riding glove is the Zero 2,which uses two patented technologies in itsconstruction. Waterproofing technology fromOutDry is combined with SPS, a systeminvented by Knox to reduce scaphoid injuries.Unlike standard waterproof liners, which aresandwiched between the outer shell andinner lining, the OutDry membrane used inthe Zero 2 is bonded directly to the shell. Bydoing this Knox claims that it prevents a build-up of water between the outer and innerlayers, and also seals stitching and joinsagainst water ingress. An addition benefit ofthis construction method is that the glove can

be made thinner than other winter gloves, with the benefit of providing more feel andfeedback. Not only is the OutDry system breathable, itis windproof too, which combines with theZero 2’s 115g Primaloft insulation andBemberg micro-fleece liner to, keep thewearer’s hands warm.Additional features on the Zero 2s include aTPR visor wipe on the left thumb, and siliconprints on the end of the first two fingers giveincreased grip on wet levers.Goat hide is used in the construction of theZero 2 with kangaroo leather on the palm,

EVER since its introduction, the MAGURA 190 Radial brake master cylinder hasbeen a brake and clutch control benchmark for many riders and dealers, but thecompany has announced that a new version is currently undergoing the finaldevelopment stages. To be named HC3, Magura say that the brand identity is designed to integratetwo of what they see as the most important design process features.

The ‘HC’ refers to the fully patented “MAGURA Hard Core Brakingtechnology”, which has been designed to reduce the internal friction in themaster cylinder while improving the compatibility for long-term use with ABSsystems.

The ‘3’ is said to refer to the “innovative mechanical lever ratio adjustment, which effectively offers three piston diameters in one master cylinder”.

Magura claim that this represents a genuine evolution for race mastercylinder design and “largest change seenin brake master hydraulic technology formany years”. The company saysthat the HC3 is “honedfrom the highestquality aluminiumal loy, combiningdecades of hydraulicknow-how with moderntechnology”, and that it willbe “top of theshopping list for allthose who wish toreduce lap times”.

Magura say that the designcompatibility with all modern ABS systems means that the HC3 isalso suitable for all high end specials builders, modern Supersportriders, and that it will be “as popular in the paddock as in thestreetfighter scene”.

By relocating the lever securing bolt (within pit stop time limits) the HC3mimics having three separate pistons by converting the master cylinder for ahigher or lower piston dimension (11/12/13mm, 14/15/16mm and17/18/19mm).
