Industry reaction to Big Bike Europe was almost universally positive in terms of both concept and organisation. Rather than taking advantage of a four week earlier spring date option, the decision to co-join the AMD World Championship with INTERMOT and make BBE a biennial autumn expo achieves three objectives. It recognises an autumn timing preference that was voiced by many exhibitors. It capitalises upon the attendance and frequency of the world’s premier international motorcycle industry event. It reduces the expo-budget burden on that (large) part of the international vendor community in Europe that already exhibits at INTERMOT. As such it is by far the best attended international motorcycle exhibition of its kind in the world. “Prior to the initial Big Bike Europe announcement in 2011, there had already been dialogue about whether to co-join the AMD World Championship with one of the largest of the established shows,” explained organiser Robin Bradley. “However, the choice of spring or autumn dating was always a 50/50 coin-toss, and both still have valid arguments in their favour. European PTW saleshalved in Seven Years!

Robin BradleyPublisher

[email protected]

AT 1,335,538 (see full story elsewhere in this edition ofInternational Dealer News) total PTW (Powered Two Wheeler)sales in the 32 European countries monitored by ACEM (The

European Motorcycle Manufacturers Association) are reduced by morethan 50 percent in the seven full years since a peak of 2,757,253 recordedfor 2007.Although the data on which ACEM's latest full-year figures for 2013 are based on

is provisional (the final number for 2013 will be a little higher when the analysis iscomplete), the net outcome will remain that, give ortake a few thousand either way, total PTW sales inEurope will have dropped by some 50 percent in theseven years (so far) of the financial crisis.Although the headline news is of recovery, it is still

likely to be some years before any substantive growthin sales numbers is seen and, at this point in time, thebest that can be hoped for is the stabilisation of salesof the kind that ACEM had predicted for 2013 whenreporting their trend data research at INTERMOT inOctober 2012.By the time the industry gathers for INTERMOT this

year, it is to be hoped that 2014 sales data will indeed have held broadly stable (forthe first time in years) and if, as appears to be likely, that does indeed prove to be thecase, then two or three more years of such stability, while the benefits of economicrecovery trickle down to "street-level", should provide a foundation on which theindustry can start to benefit from the investment being made in promotion of the"two-wheel-good" message.

This year will mark the fifth time that INTERMOT has been staged at Cologne, andthe ninth show under that name since the last joint motorcycle and bicycle industry

IFMA expo was staged at the Cologne Expo Centre (Koelnmesse). Indeed this yearmarks the 50th anniversary of the motorcycle industry's first "Cologne Show" (andas it happens the 20th anniversary of ACEM in Brussels). At the time that the motorcycle industry split from IFMA, leaving Cologne and

establishing the first biennial expo under the new INTERMOT brand (1996 was thelast IFMA at Cologne, 1998 was the first INTERMOT at Munich), the German tradeassociation landscape itself was undergoing a considerable rebuild, resulting in theestablishment of the IVM as the primary and dominant, coordinated and centralisedfocus for the motorcycle industry in Germany. One of the IVMs first major decisions, indeed part of its mission when constituted,

was to address industry dissatisfaction with its IFMA expo arrangements. Koelnmesseitself also subsequently embarked on a rebuild programme of its own, one whichwould then see it successfully re-bid to bring the motorcycle industry back to itsconsiderably remodelled facilities after four shows/eight years 'on vacation' atMunich. In the past decade (in particular) the IVM in Germany, and ACEM in Brussels, and

the other industry trade associations in Europe have done an outstanding job (underthe circumstances) of projecting the benefits of motorcycles as a transport option ofchoice (for reasons of urban mobility and leisure); whilst simultaneously protectingthe industry from what at times has appeared to be multiple fronts of sustainedregulatory assault, and all that against a background of unprecedented financialturmoil in Europe and elsewhere.

Which brings me to the exciting news that we are unveiling this month. We hereat IDN have cooperated with INTERMOT for several years already in connection

with our International Night - a manufacturer/brandowner importer/distributor 'meet & greet' networkingopportunity, which will be held again this year (18:00 hrs, Wednesday October 1st 2014).We have also been cooperating with INTERMOT

through affiliation of the Cologne Custom Cup custombike competition (in Hall 10) with our sister magazineAMDs acclaimed World Championship of Custom BikeBuilding.Following the concept-proving success of the first

BIG BIKE EUROPE Expo in May last year (at Essen) weare proud to announce elsewhere in this edition of

International Dealer News that the Hall 10 custom show and custom industrypresentation is to be upgraded this year - INTERMOT will now be the host event forthe AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building. This will form the start of analternate annual cycle with BIG BIKE EUROPE and the World Championship beingstaged at Koelnmesse in 2015, and thereafter in non-INTERMOT years, withINTERMOT now having the opportunity to "speak to" the custom market in a waythat it has not had before, further boosting the show's credentials as an expo withsomething for everybody, and being able to showcase the finest custom, one-off andprototype design and engineering.Ever since I had the accidental great good fortune to 'fall into' the motorcycle

industry some 25 years ago, I have always believed that it behoves those who canwork to the greater betterment and common interests of all whose livelihoods aredependant on securing the future of two wheels as a transport and leisure optionshould do so if, where and as they can.I therefore hope that this new dimension to INTERMOT and the boost that it will

provide to the custom parts, performance, motorcycle and accessory industry that Iam so closely involved with, will play some small part in furthering the mission ofpromotion of "everything good" that two wheels can and should mean for 21stcentury businesses and consumers.

have always been trying to achieve.“We felt we needed ‘Proof of

Concept’ for BBE before we were fullyin a position to understand the bestway forward for the Championshipcompetitor and BBE exhibitorcommunities. We needed to create aforum that champions motorcyclemodification and parts and accessorysales of all kinds. We have achieved agood start, and this formula is asolution that guarantees a truly robustlong-term foundation on which to beable to do so.

“Although the radio-silence

concerning 2014 plans has beenprotracted and frustrating, it has beena necessary step sideways in order tobe able to make what by any measureis a giant leap forward. At all stagesthis project has been about makinggood decisions rather than quickdecisions. An agreement of thismagnitude has warranted carefulconsideration and precise attention tothose devilish details.”

Speaking on behalf of Koelnmesse,INTERMOT Project Manager IngoRiedeberger says that “we aredelighted to have made a multi-yearagreement to host the AMD WorldChampionship.

“With AMD’s help, through itscustom show affiliation programme,we have made progress in developingthe custom content of INTERMOT inline with our ambition to make surethat Europe’s leading internationalmotorcycle industry and enthusiastexpo can speak effectively to allsectors of the international poweredtwo-wheel industry.

“This latest stage in our relationshipwith AMD marks an excitingdevelopment. One that will bringconsiderable benefit to INTERMOT’svisitors, its exhibitor profile, and to thecustom industry itself.”

Full details of the Championshipclasses and schedule, and of exhibitoropportunities at the AMD WorldChampionship at INTERMOT inOctober will be released soon.

Details about Big Bike Europe andAMD World Championship staging atthe Cologne Expo Centre in autumn2015 and beyond will be released laterthis year.

Organiser Robin Bradley concludedby saying: “I think we over-achieved inorganisational and conceptual termsin 2013, leaving us with a need tobuild a convincing attendance in ashorter period of time than we hadanticipated.

“By being able to help INTERMOTconsolidate the efforts it has alreadymade to offer a convincing customindustry experience for their visitors, and by allowing the parts andperformance aftermarket to use BBEas a biennial ‘fill-in’ for the years whenINTERMOT is not staged, meets theneeds of the custom community andinternational parts, accessory andperformance industry in spades!”

14 Powered Two-Wheeler (PTW)manufacturers who producemore than PTW 30 brands, plus18 of Europe's nationalmotorcycle trade associations(in 15 countries). ACEM saysthat the aggregated turnover ofthe PTW sector in Europe(manufacturing, plus upstreamand downstream activities)

amounted to Euro 27 billion in2011, employing some 125,000people, with their membershipaccounting for 90% of theEuropean powered two-wheeler, tricycle andquadricycle production.ACEM's members are eyingopportunities in growingmarkets such as Brazil, China,India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the

Philippines, Taiwan, Thailandand Vietnam as among thosethat offer the best prospects. Itis in this context that ACEMcalled on the EU to "strive toremove existing barriers andother regulatory obstacles, thereby creating the conditionsfor a level playing field."The lack of harmonisationwhere standards and technicalspecifications are concernedgenerates trade-disruptiveenvironments. The creation ofglobally harmonised marketswould benefit motorcycleproduction. A worldwide

regulatory framework wouldincrease the competitiveness ofthe European motorcycle sector, reducing costs, improvingeconomies of scale, boostingexport opportunities in marketsacross the globe, and helpmanufacturers roll-out newtechnologies more quickly."It would bring considerableefficiencies with moreaccessible products and go handin hand with the removal ofbarriers based on nationalrequirements."

ACEM calls for globally harmonisedstandards and elimination of "trade-disruptive environments" <<< Continued from page 40

ACEM Secretary General Jacques Compagne expanded on the proposal hetabled at the ACEM/ANCMA conference at the Milan show in November lastyear where he suggested that an additional or alternate approach whereagreements on harmonisation of standards and regulations could not bereached in a timely manner would instead be to adopt a policy of “mutualrecognition” agreements of existing standards. At this ACEM conference hereported that the process of seeking to establish that concept as a “twintrack” agenda item with certain markets, most notably the United States, was under way, and he went on to additionally suggest that such aprogramme could also include an agreement to harmonise any newregulatory impacts on a moving forward basis.

Dutch MEP Wim van de Camp, who is the Motorcycle Rapporteur on theEuropean Parliament’s Internal Market Committee (IMCO), pointed to the bigdifference between fair trade and free trade, highlighting the fact that theformer is an ideal that is probably never achievable, whilst criticising the EUtrade treaty negotiators for not achieving satisfactory free trade agreementsquickly enough, and suggesting that if trade bloc agreements are out ofreach, then the EU should embrace bilateral trade deals with those countrieswho want to benefit from increased trade with Europe

for a Harley Touring bike or otherheavy weight V-twin cruiser,”said Lane. “This alone is reasonenough to consider switching toShorai LFX batteries.”The weight savings do not comeat the expense of performance.Shorai batteries operate at ahigher voltage range duringcranking, resulting in quickerstarting. From a dealer’sperspective, the fact Shorai’s LFXbatteries do not sulfate whilesitting on the shelves or invehicles should be appealing.“They do not suffer the chemicaldegradation that plaguesconventional lead acid batteries,so they last longer.

broad torque band, the engine is said to

deliver a combined highway/city fueleconomy of over 40 mpg andhydrocarbon and nitrous oxide exhaustemissions that are said to be less than25 percent of those allowed by the USEnvironmental Protection Agencystandards (carbon monoxide emissionsare said to be just 6 percent of the levelallowed by US federal regulations). The company is describing the engine

The European 'Bke Park ' - PTWs in useDATA released by ACEM at their recent10th annual conference gives aninteresting insight into the 'Bike Park' inEurope - the total number of PoweredTwo Wheelers on the road.

The most recent available full-yeardata is to the end of 2012 and it showsthat while the number of bikes on theroad has dipped, at 35,566,991(25,738,753 of which are motorcycles)it has not collapsed in the downturn inanything like the way that sales of newunits have done.

In 2011 the number was37,738,799, and had actually grownannually each year to then from the31,839,152 reported for 2005(19,433,214 of which are reported asmotorcycles).

Not surprisingly Italy has the largestPTW population at 8,582,796, of which6,482,796 are motorcycles - whichmeans that up to some 20 percent of theriding age population has a PTW ofsome kind.

The total 'Bike Park' figure in Italy hasremained consistent at over 8m totalPTW units ever since 2005, with thenumber of those being described in thedata as motorcycles climbing steadilyfrom just under 5m ever since then -meaning that the profile of the PTWmarket in Italy has shifted decisivelytowards larger displacement machines,by some 30 percent of the total since2005.

The second largest PTW 'Bike Park'in Europe is in Germany, where themost recently available complete data(to end of 2011) puts the total of PTW'sin use at 5,814,195, of which sometwo-thirds are motorcycles (3,908,072in 2011).

The German market has remainedconsistently over 5m units, and withapproximately the same proportion ofmotorcycles to mopeds ever since 2005.Spain boasts Europe's third largest

'Bike Park', at 5,021,965 units in 2012of which more than half (2,852,297) are

motorcycles. Although the split between

motorcycles and lower cc 'mopeds' ismuch nearer 50/50 in Spain, the growthin motorcycle ownership as aproportion is clearly seen in ACEM'sdata, with growth from 1,805,827 (in a4,066,267 total) resulting in thenumber of larger displacementmachines overtaking 'mopeds' for thefirst time in 2008 and appearing tocontinue to grow in proportion andabsolute number terms right up to2012.

Fourth largest is France with3,089,125 total PTWs (1,674,147 ofwhich are motorcycles); down frompeak PTW ownership of 3,857,000 in2008.

Europe's 'Top Five' PTW 'Bike Parks'is completed by Turkey, at 2,657,722units in 2012 (the available data fromTurkey does not differentiate betweenmotorcycles and 'mopeds'. Poland is sixth at 2,207,556 total

PTWs (1,107260 motorcycles); Greeceis seventh at 1,776,435 total PTWs (asurprisingly high 1,556,435 of whichare descibed as being motorcycles).

The UK and Dutch markets are prettymuch of equal size in 'Bike Park' terms, with the United Kingdom(1,362,849) only slightly ahead of TheNetherlands (1,210,729); though thedisplacement profiles of the twomarkets are very different - in the UKmotorcycles are by far in the majority, whereas Dutch motorcycles are onlysome 100,000 or so more than'mopeds'.

The tenth largest PTW 'Bike Park' inEurope is in the Czech Republic(976,911 total), where the market issplit 50/50 between 'mopeds' andmotorcycles.

In order, the next 10 'Bike Parks' inEurope are Switzerland, Austria,Belgium, Finland, Portugal, Sweden,Norway, Denmark, Croatia andHungary.

ORGANISED by FEMA (Federation ofEuropean Motorcyclists' Associations),the Brussels based Riders Rights grouplobby organisation, the 3rd EuropeanMotorcyclists' Forum will focus onIntelligent Transport Systems (ITS) inthe context of the EU Horizon 2020initiative.

"Powered Two Wheeler (PTW) usersare market consumers using newtechnology to improve their ridingexperience or to increase their safety",says Aline Delhaye, General Secretaryof FEMA.

"However, as vulnerable road users, they are also impacted by ITSdeployment. The specificities of thistransport mode need to be carefullyunderstood and integrated into ITSdeployment activities to guarantee

that PTW use is rightly integrated intotomorrow’s transport system".

The Forum – which is beingorganised under the umbrella of theRiderscan project – will discuss thesafety challenges faced by poweredtwo wheelers (PTWs) "in an ever moreconnected transport system" and lookat EU transport/mobility challenges, safety strategies and the role of ITS,motorcycling and ITS challenges, addressing research and deploymentissues; practical considerations related

to the use of PTWs in Europe and thepriorities and challenges faced by themotorcycling sector both at EU andnational level.

It is hoped that the Forum, which isbeing hosted by MEP Bernd Lange inthe European Parliament premises onMarch 5th 2014 (from 3 to 6pm), withdiscussions continuing all day onMarch 6th will arrive at a consensus ofrecommendations for optimalintegration of PTWs into ITS-drivenpolicies.

BIKE HUD is a new motorcycle heads-up display, brought to market by UK business Bike Systems, thatshows speed, engine revs, gear selection, turnindicators and more using graphics, colour and soundon a display mounted in the rider’s helmet. Designedto be fitted to any motorcycle, the in-helmet display fitsfull-face and most flip-front helmets.

“Bike HUD is intended to work in the rider’speripheral field of view and make riding safer,” saidBike System’s Managing Director Dave Vout. “In a highpressure environment an average person can onlyabsorb three sets of information at any one time. BikeHUD typically shows three main data sets, for examplespeed, gear and engine revs.

“Bike HUD’s display and alerts provide the rider withimportant information without causing a distractionfrom the road and traffic conditions. Of course, if therider wants to read the numbers on the display he orshe can; the optics place the image at infinity so thereis no need to re-focus when reading the display.”

Bike HUD offers three riding modes:commuting/leisure riding, touring and track day racing.Commuting mode shows gear selection, indicators, speed and engine speed, while touring mode adds GPScoordinates and mileage countdown. In track daymode, Bike HUD tells the rider if the last lap was fasteror slower than the preceding one – it also givesfaster/slower indication for user-defined sectors of thetrack.

When a GPS navigator app is installed on asmartphone, it can be configured to work with the BikeHUD heads-up display. Once connected, via Bluetooth,it can work in miles and yards or kilometres and metresdepending on location. The overall route and overallprogress is displayed, together with the ability tochange route, taking in additional points of interestalong the way.

If the rider is already a Bike HUD owner, he or shecan get this sooner on the Bike HUD Tester Scheme, which is free to join.

An additional feature offered on Bike HUD as amonthly subscription is the ‘Bike Systems Safety’, whichalerts users to the location of roadside safety cameras.More than 38 countries will be supported by thesystem, which will be updated on a monthly basis toensure all fixed, temporary, red-light and mobile

cameras are accounted for. Itwill also provide speedsensitive alerts; the faster the

rider is travelling the earlier they will be alerted of apotential safety issue through either audio and/orvisual prompts. Either or both types of alert can beturned on or off for each camera type.

Bike Systems is also currently working with a leadingUS radar/laser expert to modify Bike HUB (Bike HUD'son-board computer) to display laser/radar alerts onBike HUD. By re-configuring two of Bike HUD's inputs,Bike Systems says it will be able to alert the rider of anydetection of radar/laser speed traps and potentialsafety issues developing on the road ahead.

There are three components to Bike HUD: the in-helmet display, the controller (Bike HUB) and ahandlebar mounted control panel. The in-helmetdisplay can be moved between helmets. The Bike HUBcontroller is the size of a smart phone, it and the controlpanel can be installed on the motorcycle by anycompetent mechanic or auto-electrician.

OptiMate 5 Voltmatic

TECMATE is claiming that its new OptiMate 5Voltmatic is the first ever charger capable ofautomatically recovering 6V lead-acid batteries fromdeep discharge. The charger will also charge andmaintain medium to large 12V batteries [from 8Ahto 120Ah].The OptiMate 5 VoltMatic retains the fully

automatic, and easy-to-use characteristics of otherOptiMates, while being capable of recoveringbatteries retaining as little as one-volt.The OptiMate

5 identifies whether a battery is 6V or 12V and thenruns a series of tests to see whether it requiresdesulphation or bulk charge. It then delivers chargein controlled pulses that equalise the voltage in eachof the battery cells and checks that charge is beingretained, before indicating that the battery hasreached full charge.OptiMate runs a 30-minute charge/30-minute

THE 10th ACEM annualconference in Brussels (January29th) was titled "A GlobalVision for the Powered Two-Wheeler market" - the focuswas on the opportunities andbarriers for Europeanmotorcycle and componentmanufacturers seeking tocompensate for lost domesticEuropean sales through accessto international markets.ACEM (the Motorcycle IndustryEuropean Association) attractedmore than 130 attendeesrepresenting businesses, EUpolicy makers and nationaladministrations. The discussionsaddressed the challenges facedby the motorcycle sector in the

EU, the opportunities created byemerging economies and howEU trade and industrial policycan effectively support thesector. ACEM presented provisional2013 statistics for the poweredTwo-Wheeler (PTW) sector. Thefigures clearly showed that themotorcycle industry still faces acritical situation with sales andregistrations of PTWs goingdown for six consecutive years(between 2008 and 2013), withhistorically large SouthernEuropean PTW markets such asItaly, France, Spain and Greecehaving been severely hit by thefinancial and economic crisis. ACEM's thesis is that while new

business opportunities forEuropean motorcycle andcomponent producers arearising in emerging markets(such as China, India andVietnam), with somesuccessfully establishingoperations in emerginginternational markets, they andmany others remain concernedabout critical regulatoryobstacles such as excessiveimport duties and otherstrategic non-tariff barriers. As the President of ACEMStephan Schaller (CEO BMWMotorrad) pointed out“emerging economies offerenormous opportunities forgrowth, unfortunately market

conditions are not always fairfor European businesses”. ACEM say that "theharmonisation of technicalregulations across regions isessential. The adoption ofglobal standards, particularlywithin the framework of UNECE[United Nations EconomicCommission for Europe,Geneva], would significantlyimprove the overallcompetitiveness of themotorcycle industry."ACEM say that the EU needs tofocus on reinforcing "Europe’smanufacturing base fully in linewith the Commission’s recentcommunication on a EuropeanIndustrial Renaissance."However, ACEM fears that to besuccessful, this process must"take into account the specificconditions of extra-EUdeveloping economies, whichrepresent today around 90% ofthe world’s market." ACEM says it supports a globalvision for the PTW market, onein which "adequate regulatoryand trade conditions benefitboth industry and consumers."As ACEM President StephanSchaller went on to say“industrial policy must comprisesmart and harmonisedregulations, access to themarkets, and fair competition.ACEM will continue to closelywork with EU Institutions topromote and achieve thisimportant objective”. ACEM membership consists of

ACEM calls for globally harmonisedstandards and elimination of "trade-disruptive environments"
