IED Group

The Istituto Europeo di Design boasts over forty years of activity in teaching and research in design, fashion, visual arts and communication. IED unique approach to teaching design culture is adopted in all four schools: a method linked to “knowledge and know-how” that illustrates the IED credo. Today IED is an international institution which maintains its truly Italian roots. A meeting point for culture and learning, with seats in Milan, Rome, Turin, Venice, Florence, Cagliari, Como, Madrid, Barcelona, San Paolo and Rio de Janeiro, IED runs three-year and four-year degree and diploma courses, Semester and Academic year courses, Summer and Specialization courses and Master courses.Since 1966 IED has developed an innovative teaching method, centred on the synergy between technology and experimentation, based on creativity, the development of transversal projects, integrated communication strate-gies and on different aspects linked to the market and new professions. IED method is fostered and enriched by the constant contact with professionals from all sectors.IED is a member of several international academic organizations and associations, such as Cumulus (Design Educational Network co-funded under the Erasmus section of the Socrates Program), ELIA (European League of Institutes of the Arts), IAA (International Advertising Association), FIYTA, IIE, EAIE and MEC-Brazil and has signed partnerships and student exchange agreements with over 40 of the top Universities in the world.

The strength of the Network

IED has a global feel and international vision, it is able to grasp new product and market trends and therefore pro-vide teaching that is constantly updated. It is a real community of professionals, teachers, companies, institutions and students whose constant interaction creates a network of relations and culture capable of generating creativity and innovation. Becoming part of the IED world gives students the chance to study in one of the IED seats and experience the Genius Loci, the culture of the place, while growing in an international atmosphere: an opportunity for an extraor-dinary personal experience and a great chance to increase your cultural knowledge and grow as professionals and world citizens.

IEDSCHOOLSIED Design, IED Moda, IED Visual Communication and IED Management Lab answer to the demands of the workplace through programmes aimed at the real needs of the sectors of interest and feature a common theme: design culture.

8 > 9

IED Design

IED Design is the complete and practical answer to the countless demands of the professional design world. The concept of design is now deeply rooted in every sector of merchandise, in their contents, language, ex-pression and style, as well as in functional and techni-cal aspects. By definition designers are innovators of style and function, interpreting and forerunning emerg-ing aesthetic lines and the functional needs of their time. IED is always in touch with the latest oscillations in tastes and trends, and creates professionals able to work in various sectors from street furniture to car and toy design, from fashion accessories to IT support, just to name a few.

IED Moda

IED greatest success lies in the ability to train profes-sionals able to seduce with their creativity and man-age, with equal ability, the concept, coordination and production of a collection of garments, accessories and jewellery, as well as the composition and styling, sales planning, programming for the season and logistics of the product, marketing and brand communication in the many different fashion sectors. A key factor here is the relationship with the Sistema Moda Italiana, the most important association in the world of textiles and fash-ion industries. Students at IED learn to experience and feel fashion as a whole and in each single element.

IED Visual Communication

IED Visual Communication is the creative laboratory where students learn the tools, expressive and linguis-tic register, new techniques and the necessary ability to develop a visual communication project. In a world where values and meaning are mainly conveyed through sound and image visual communication is fundamental for transmitting ideas and concepts linked to different areas of production, advertising and culture, politics and society. The “look” of a project is a major contributor to how suc-cessfully a message is communicated. Moving compe-tently and professionally in this field requires an eclectic transversal culture, based on a thorough knowledge of both the surrounding social-cultural context and the latest technologies that continuously modify the role of images and sounds in communication.

IED Management Lab

IED Management Lab is the first IED school dedicated to teaching on topics linked to managing creativity in business processes. Managers in communication and marketing, brands and events, advertising and public relations are sought after by companies who need spe-cialists that are prepared and able to innovate. IED Man-agement Lab provides an alternative model to traditional business, economics and communications schools, concentrating the methodology on teaching “design thinking” and typical design culture with an emphasis on innovation and creativity. IED aim is to create pro-fessionals able to promote and manage the development process of new products and services, within a tradi-tional or creative business.

IED METHODIED aims at constantly improving services through discussion, exchange and collaboration with the private companies, professional communities, universities, institutions and young people that represent the future.

12 > 13

Learning to learnThe IED network works with 1900 lecturers, all suc-cessful professionals in their sphere who are able to provide clear theory and practical project works. Class size range from 10-25 students, depending on course requirements; this favours student-teacher interaction and allows students to fully benefit from their lecturer’s knowledge and skills.

Learning by doingIn all areas of preparation at IED “learning by doing” is an absolute must. Participation to the numerous labora-tory activities and regular attendance at lectures guar-antee that IED student’s training turns into real skills. Learning to interact with the production systemThe practical experience provided at IED means stu-dents quickly learn design culture. IED students work on real projects commissioned by public and private companies, institutions and manufacturers. Students can immediately verify the efficacy of the theories learnt and experience working with the production system.

Learning to participate and competeThe IED method includes numerous creative competi-tions and group projects. All creative people, whether they design material goods, strategies or complex services, have to work with a range of professionals. Learning to work as part of a team of skilled profession-als is essential for those wishing to enter the Design world.

Learning to communicate and build relationshipsA good designer is able to listen to and understand dif-ferent points of view. Students at IED gain the profes-sional experience needed to learn and grow through workshops and special projects, which encourage them to form good relations with students in different areas of training at the school as well as with external compa-nies and institutions.

Learning to start and manage your careerIED wants to produce graduates who continue to grow and are always up to date with the shifting trends in the work place, that is why IED is in constant contact with businesses and institutions for advanced research and technology, making IED ready to answer to the chang-ing needs of the market. This approach is transferred to the students at IED, who are from the outset encouraged to take up the challenge and are given the necessary tools to manage their own enterprise.

A network of professionalsA teaching staff made of professionals means that the current rapid changes in national and international spheres of production are instantly included in course contents. Students establish a relationship with the wor-king world through contact with their lecturers, achie-ving true continuity between school and the professio-nal context. Professional simulation is a fundamental component in IED teaching method and allows students to work on real cases and address actual problems. The

choice to trust to professionals who “lend” their skills, time and passion to teaching rather than hiring teachers by profession differentiates IED from traditional Acade-mies and Universities and highlights the importance of know-how and design culture: this methodology, at the basis of the IED teaching system is guaranteed by the school staff whose educational skills have been tried and tested over almost fifty years of experience in edu-cation.

Milan is the international capital of design, the city of innovation and Made in Italy, a point of reference in Italy for creativity and enterprise. Here Francesco Morelli founded the Istituto Europeo di Design in 1966, his teaching was inspired by know-how and designing for industry and with industry: a school based on design culture and the methodology of design, originating from the intent to educate creative young people able to follow their dreams and transform them into professional success stories.

Today Milan is a city of designers, architects, graphic designers, but also of fashion designers, entrepreneurs and editors who have made history in Italian culture. It is the centre of publishing and advertising, of Italian hi-tech com-panies, of commercial and creative businesses. Choosing to study in Milan means coming into contact with a network of professionals internationally renowned, active in the world of fashion, design, communication, management and visual arts: these professionals and companies gravitate around the IED world, they represent excellence in their field and guarantee high quality teaching and links to the current needs of the world of work.

Today IED Milano welcomes over three thousand students every year to their schools in the heart of the city, an educational centre built to suit the needs of creative people. Laboratories, classrooms, networking areas, libraries and offices dedicated to the students are distributed in different buildings in via Sciesa and via Bezzecca and in via Pompeo Leoni.

Thanks to its great cultural heritage, in its 30 centuries of history Rome has been the first and largest metropolis of the world. Its culture has influenced the society, literature, art, religion, philosophy and law of the entire Western world. IED Roma headquarter benefits from all the characteristics that make the Italian Capital a breeding ground for creative professionals. Rome is a hub of social and institutional interactions and a center of artistic and cul-tural production (film, music, theater, performing arts, publishing and advertising). It periodically hosts important national and international events (such as Rome Film Festival, AltaRoma AltaModa, Romaeuropa Festival and the Rome International Photography Festival).

The year 2013 marks the 40th anniversary of IED Roma. Since 1973 the school has trained thousands of creative students who currently hold important positions at national and international well-known companies. To celebrate this important anniversary, IED Roma has launched a new disciplinary area: Cinema and New Media.

Courses range from traditional screenwriting to writing for web series, web docs and transmedia, from the crea-tion of soundtracks to special effects, from production to marketing and film distribution, also exploring the con-nections between films and the world of videogames, apps and interaction design. Unlike other traditional film schools, IED focuses on the integration of storytelling and technology, and the search for new languages and industrial contents, while also paying the usual attention to design and aesthetics. Today, more than 1,500 stu-dents coming from Italy and from all over the world attend the two hubs of IED Roma located in the neighborhoods of Testaccio and San Giovanni: the schools of Fashion and Management Lab are in Testaccio, a popular district famous for its hectic nightlife; the schools of Design and Visual Communication and the Master’s Department are in San Giovanni, near the picturesque and cosmopolitan district of Pigneto.

Turin is a culturally dynamic city. Over the last few years it has drawn international attention for its scientific, technological, artistic and wine and food heritage. The international energy moving in the creative, social and tech-nological spheres unleashed by the Winter Olympic Games in 2006 and the Winter World Student Games in 2007 convinced the city to attempt ambitious new targets. In 2008 Turin was the first World Design Capital and hosted the World Congress of Architects; it was European Science Capital in 2010, and in 2011 it hosted the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the Union of Italy and Italian production.

Today Turin is a city known for its research and innovation, and is facing a new challenge: to become a candidate for Smart City, proving it is able to raise the quality of life of its inhabitants by adopting eco-sustainable policies. Turin is demonstrating its ability to move forward in the new global context and is pulling out all its resources to attract international investors. Turin is also a worthy cultural centre from which to draw fresh inspiration to develop the designs of the future.

It is the book capital: the Salone Internazionale del Libro (International book fair) with over 1,400 publishers and 300.000 visitors is now the largest Italian exhibition dedicated to publishing, reading and culture and is one of the top exhibitions in Europe.

It is the cinema capital: besides housing the National Cinema Museum, every year the city hosts important cinematographic events including the Turin Film Festival with over 80,000 visitors from all over the world; the GLBT Film Festival, one of the world’s most important festivals on homosexual themes; the CinemAmbiente Festi-val, the View Festival and the Piedmont Share Festival, exhibitions dedicated to digital culture and the expressive possibilities of new media.

It is the wine and food capital: The Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre shows are two great international mo-ments in the city dedicated to the culture of food.

Turin is also the contemporary art capital: international events such as Artissima and Paratissima attract gal-leries, artists and enthusiasts from all over the world. The jewel in the crown of the city is the “Luci d’Artista” an absolute must in the contemporary art season, when the streets and squares of Turin are lit up with installations by famous names, bringing art into direct contact with the public.

IED Torino has been running since 1989 and is situated in a residential area in the city centre. Over 2500 square metres of classrooms and an internal garden are home to over 800 Italian and foreign students every year, giv-ing them the chance to study in an international atmosphere that encourages cultural exchange. In 2010 a new space entirely dedicated to post-graduate Master courses opened alongside the old school: two floors covering 350 square metres divided into offices, six classrooms, one for each Master course, a common room and further spaces for education. Each academic year features a full diary of events and exhibitions to reinforce the relationship between the school and the surrounding area and draw attention to the results of IED educational activities. In this way the creative abilities of the students are recognized outside the school and strong links are forged with external organizations, local institutions, companies and the media.

IED Torino has gained international recognition as a leading school for Transportation Design. The presence in the area of the most famous Italian automotive industries, ensures IED Torino constant contact with top experts and professionals in the sector, that directly contribute to educating students by commissioning real projects. Since 2004 IED Torino has been represented at the International Auto Show in Geneva with a full size model, fruit of the Master in Transportation Design work experience (in the photo the concept Gloria created in collaboration with Alfa Romeo and presented at the 2013 show). In continuity with the philosophy of the network, IED Torino follows the educational methodology founded on theoretical lessons constantly united with workshops and hands-on experience. In this way it ensures constant connection between knowledge and know-how, guaranteeing a very high percentage of students finding employ-ment after graduation.

Florence not only has an incredibly rich cultural and artistic heritage but is also the Italian capital for some famous traditional handicrafts, particularly in the field of fashion and accessories. This is a cultural and productive context that has an international feel yet still remains deeply rooted in the philosophy of Made in Italy. Here IED aims to educate young creative people who, with passion, freedom and enthusiasm, know how to breathe life into their dreams and design products and styles for the future. IED Firenze works to enhance the local area and encourage the meeting of different cultures, in order to generate a virtuous relationship between artistic craftsmanship and industry, which becomes an important fusion between traditional know-how and contemporary techniques.

To take on the concept of “knowing how to do things well” which is typical of the Tuscan industrial sectors, IED Firenze has created strong links with the local textile industry, particularly with the fashion districts in Prato and Santa Croce sull’Arno. This is where special and unique products are created that are used in the window displays of the most famous fashion boutiques in the world, forming an irreplaceable resource for international stylists. After four years of activity in the area, IED Firenze has moved to the ex-offices of the Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze Foundation near Palazzo Pucci. The building is just a few minutes away from the old city centre and is surrounded by a flourishing garden which looks onto one of the most important contemporary works of the architect Giovanni Michelucci, the Headquarters of the Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze bank. The other side of the building looks onto the Dome of Florence cathedral, the work of Filippo Brunelleschi, and a symbol of renaissance Florence.

Venice has always been a symbol of culture, art and commerce, a city suspended between land and sea. A place where the complications of city life are diluted in the rhythms dictated by nature and by that unique relationship between the sea air and the lively reality of solid ground. IED, present in Venice since 2007, has acquired an impor-tant new position in the historical centre of the city opening a school in Palazzo Franchetti. A school for creativity, experimenting with forms of communication and innovation, IED finds its home in a place where by vocation cultural activities are promoted, organized and achieved.

Venice has a history of exchange and original manufacture, an international cultural dimension and a strong influ-ence on the Veneto territory, its famous dynamism in business is both stimulating and provides new opportunities. The city on the lagoon and the inland area are steeped in history, culture and nature but also have a solid manufactur-ing and industrial tradition. Famous examples are the leather goods district in the Riviera del Brenta and the manu-facture of artistic Murano glass, whose ancient traditions in production are internationally recognised. The cultural heritage district is home to a collection of enterprises involved in restoring and preserving our heritage, and of equal importance is the presence in the area of organizations that involve thousands of small and medium businesses.

IED Venezia once again represents a cultural centre able to unite knowledge and know-how, creativity and strategic vision, it is attentive to organizational aspects and manufacturing developments, and open to the artistic, handicrafts, industrial and institutional realities of the area.

An observatory for cultural heritage: IED Venezia, aware that enhancing Italy’s cultural heritage is a vital theme in the re-launching of the culture and systems in our country, has become a promoter of a “think tank”, a permanent round table for organizations in Venice involved in the topic of culture, an opportunity for discussion and sharing best practice in the correct management and enhancement of the Italian cultural heritage and a place to investigate new econometric parameters for cultural heritage. So far the cultural associations that have actively taken part include: Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, Fondazione Musei Civici Senesi, Istituto Bruno Leone, Palazzo Grassi/Punta della Dogana, Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Istituto Veneto delle Arti, Scienze e Lettere, Fondazione Cini, Esterni and Fondazione Venezia.

Cagliari is the heart of the Mediterranean, the city of the sun and the sea, where the beautiful season lasts 300 days a year. A human scale city: little by extension, great for culture, art and history. It is the capital of a unique and authentic land: Sardinia. It is the starting point to see the whole island, knowing its secrets and discovering its traditions. Sar-dinia is a crossroads of the past and the future, and one of IED’s native places: indeed one of the first schools of what has now become an excellent international education network was based in the city of Cagliari. It was in this wonderful capital that began the history of the Italian Internet: brilliant students, who became excellent professionals thanks to IED, gave voice and image in 1994, to one of the first Italian internet providers. Everything was born from the synergy between some enlightened Sardinian minds and CRS4, Research, Development and Higher studies Center of Sardinia, then led by Nobel Laureate Carlo Rubia. After a few years break, the Istituto Europeo di Design went back to its island in 2009, in Viale Trento, in the historic neighborhood of Stampace, formerly inhabited by merchants and craftsmen.

Villa Satta is IED Cagliari current headquarters: a charming Art Nouveau mansion, a quiet oasis located in the city center, where a scattered student campus comes to life and education and culture become well-being and harmony with the environment.IED Cagliari, in addition to being the creative spark of the new web technologies, is also sustainability, environment and hospitality. All vocations of a pristine land that, through the Istituto Europeo di Design, has taught and will continue to teach that creativity has no boundaries and that, even from an island, you can reach the world, therefore the future.

Universally acknowledged for its great quality in manufacturing textiles – especially silk - this lakefront city was the epicentre of last century artistic and architectural avantgardes.

A cultural institution that is the pride of this city and one of Italy finest schools of restoration, the Aldo Galli Acade-my joined the IED Group in 2009. Capitalising on its primacy in this field, its teaching courses have been implemented to encompass new materials (for restoration) and objects made of pottery, glass, metals and metal alloys: a process innovation that has few parallels in the leading country of the world for restoration.

The Academy new courses in Fashion Design, aligned with the production system in the Como area, best represent the excellence that thrives in this district.

Centuries of shared influences have marked the historical and cultural relations between Italy and Spain. In a way, the decision that Spain would be the first country outside Italy to host IED campuses came quite naturally. In this city, one of the most important in the world and a crossroads of European and Latin American cultures, IED develops its teaching in design in its traditional areas (Design, Fashion, the Visual Arts and Communication), while also implementing innovative areas to train professionals capable of designing interactions, services and systems that put the focus on the individual. These are professionals who are conscious of contemporary issues able to design according to environmental, ethical-social, economic and political requirements.

IED Madrid is a cultural institution for the dissemination of design and its connections to other disciplines like architecture, art, cinema and music, boasting a diverse programme (exhibitions, conferences, and events linked to a vision of the future) and a publishing house which produces an array of publications that clearly demonstrate IED centre’s educational activity and the quality of its best exponents: the designers and future professionals.

In 2002, IED opened its Barcelona centre in Gràcia, one of the most authentic and charismatic neighbourhoods in the city. Over this 11 years, the school has become a reference point in the teaching of design, both nationally and internationally. A leading observatory of trends and research, with a project culture at its heart, that offers students the chance to carry out innumerable projects with companies. Faithful to its tradition of continuous innovation and inquisitiveness for change, IED Barcelona has decided to initiate new projects for a thorough reform of all the ele-ments that constitute the complex process of a design education.

2012 was a key year for IED Barcelona as it has marked its 10th anniversary, and its conversion to a Higher Level Design School, with the official approval of all its courses as well as the inauguration of the new seat. More than 5.000 m2 with labs for fashion, interior and product design, communication and video, in addition to classrooms and facilities for conferences that enable the development of laboratory and research activities, turning IED into a creative, unique and pioneer design space in the city of Barcelona.

São Paulo is one of the world’s largest megalopolises, the emblem of a multicultural society: its teeming millions have all sorts of different backgrounds that have profoundly influenced the culture of this great Brazilian city, which stretches from the Atlantic to the Paraná and is considered to be the financial and industrial hub of all of Latin America.

Home of Brazil’s oldest university, São Paulo has also given birth to many artistic and aesthetic movements, contending with Rio for the title of Brazil’s principal cultural focus. Traditionally capital of the country’s most dy-namic industrial concentrations, such as textiles, furnishings and lighting, São Paulo has experienced a gradual change in its economic profile: from a very industrial hub to a centre that tends to focus on high technology and services. It is home to some of the country’s leading TV networks and of numerous advertising agencies and publishers.

In 2005, IED chose South America’s largest, most cosmopolitan and quite possibly most dynamic city, to be the home of its first location in the new continent. IED São Paulo partnership with the institutions and with the various different local economic interest groups has developed rapidly, building synergies that facilitate students in the process of their training and in making a start in a labour market with an international scope.

IED SÃO PAULO

Rio de Janeiro has always been the summary of everything that is Brazil. It is the point where cultural diversities converge, and the theatre where all the country leading cultural movements and events stage their débuts. Rio is home to the samba and the bossa nova, to Brazil modern architecture and contemporary art, to concrete poetry and the neo-realist “Cinema Novo” movement.

The city rich plastic creativity, inventive capacity, fascinating colour schemes and “re-invented” materials are a genuine sign of Brazil multiple identities. This is a spontaneous and non-academic form of design in practice, a sort of crossdiscipline where fashion, graphic and product design meet in search of an evolution of forms and experiences. Within the boundaries of Rio Genius Loci, IED will focus its teaching programs to take in not only Design, Fashion, Communication and Visual Arts, but also the innovative principles of sustainable architecture and of strategic and service design.
