Christmas dinner Annual IEEE Northern Canada Section Christmas dinner was hold at the German Canadian Cultural Centre on December 12. This year there were a no‐host bar and a plated meal.

IEEE IAS ESTMP Presents Electrical Safety, Technical and Mega Projects Workshop

March 3-5, 2014 The IEEE IAS ESTMP Workshop provided a forum for exchanging and advancing industry knowledge in the areas of electrical safety, engineering design, and power system reliability and the implementation and execution of Mega Projects. The Workshop focus was to share innovative concepts, successes as well as lessons learned in the areas of: 1) advancing state of the art knowledge and best practices, 2) stimulating innovation in creating the next generation of technology and 3) design and implementation of Mega Projects. Who Attended? Individuals that had participated in past ESTMP workshops continued to attest to the high quality of the presentations and tutorials. Anyone involved with electrical, safety, construction, or design benefited from this workshop. GOLD Speaker: To promote the Graduates Of the Last Decade (GOLD) we had a 15 minute opening presentation from a GOLD Guest Speaker on “Building a Distribution Automation Program” Building a Distribution Automation Program SCADA has long been a staple of the transmission world, where it is a mature technology serving very well‐understood business and operational needs. As this, and other automation technologies, enters the distribution world, however, we find that the needs are different. In this presentation, we had a look at some of the needs driving the distribution automation program at ATCO Electric, and at how they affect the system design and architecture choices made.



Conductors and Raceways Design Tuesday, May 13th, 2014, 6:00 to 9:00pm

This seminar provided details on the design aspects of conductor/cable and raceway installations. A review of CSA standards for conductors/cables and raceways was provided. Practical installation requirements and techniques were discussed. Canadian Electrical Code requirements and variances were included in the presentation. Trends in upcoming cabling installations were discussed. George Morlidge is the Chief Electrical Engineer at Fluor Canada Ltd. He has forty years of experience in design, installation, operation and maintenance of electrical systems. Principal Engineer with numerous duties including assignments on projects to assist Project Management in various areas of responsibility including Project Engineering/Engineering Management, interdiscipline coordination, scheduling, procurement, and work sharing with both Fluor domestic and international offices. Critical success factors included budget, schedule, quality and client satisfaction. Extensive experience in modularization, specifically in 3rd Gen Modular ExecutionSM. Past chairman and member of the Energy Industry Electrical Engineers Association, an industry safety codes and standards development group of senior engineers from the energy industry and the major consultants in that industry. Voting member of the Canadian Standards Association Standard 22.1, the Canadian Electrical Code Part 1. Chairman of Section 18 Hazardous Locations. Voting member of the subcommittees for Section 2 General Rules and Section 10 Grounding of the CSA Standard C22.1, the Canadian Electrical Code Part I. Voting member of the CSA Technical Committee for Industrial Products. Blair Sackney has worked in technical and sales roles in the wire and cable industry for over 12 years. He has developed a strong background in wire and cable over a broad range of cables from 300V Instrumentation and Control to Medium Voltage cables. His background includes product development as well as solving technical challenges for Distribution, Engineers, Electricians, and End Users. Increased DG Competitiveness through Fair Market Pricing Distributed generation is in its infancy in terms of market adoption despite offering significant environmental benefits. Furthermore, smart grid implementation offers the opportunity to improve system operations through the better utilization of economics, information and technological innovation. In this presentation we will look at how DG is currently undervalued in the Alberta market and how it can become more competitive through smart grid improvements offering more competitive pricing, information sharing, and better market characterization.

Invisibility and Electromagnetic-Wave Manipulation with Metamaterial Structures

June 24th, 2014, 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM Abstract In this seminar we described our recent efforts toward electromagnetic‐wave manipulation using engineered structures (metamaterials) and related concepts. First, we presented some fundamental metamaterial concepts and structures related to imaging beyond the diffraction limit. This was followed by our recent development of the "super‐microscope": An optical real‐time microscope that overcomes the diffraction limit in the far zone without the need of any fluorescent labeling or fine scanning. Subsequently we introduced the concept of the filed‐discontinuity (FD) metasurface. We then described a thin active cloak which remains effective and thin regardless of the size and material composition of the object to hide. Finally, we showed applications of this FD‐metasurface concept for manipulating electromagnetic waves at included beam refraction and focusing. Biography George V. Eleftheriades earned his Ph.D. and M.S.E.E. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1993 and 1989 respectively. Currently he is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto where he holds the Canada Research/Velma M. Rogers Graham Chair in Engineering. Eleftheriades introduced the concept of utilizing transmission lines to realize negative‐index metamaterials in 2002. Together with his graduate students he has produced the first experimental demonstration of focusing beyond the diffraction limit with a Veselago‐Pendry lens and invented a number of novel and practical antenna/microwave devices. Eleftheriades is the recipient of the 2008 IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Technical Field Award. He is an IEEE Fellow and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He has been the general chair of the 2010 IEEE Intl. Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and CNC/USNC/URSI Radio Science Meeting which was held in Toronto, Canada July 11‐17, 2010. Together with his graduate students he co‐authored several award‐winning papers including the 2010 IEEE Microwave and Wireless Components Best Paper Award, twice (2008 and 2012) the RWP King Best Paper Award from the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, and the 2014 Piergiorgio Uslenghi Best Paper Award from the IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters.

Technical Seminar: Renewable Energy Utilization and Role of Energy Storage

and Demand Response for Improved Reliability Opening Talk:

Networking for Career Development Tuesday, September 30th, 2014, 6:00 to 9:00pm

Technical Seminar Abstract: It is expected that demand for electricity will increase rapidly around the globe in the foreseeable future. The increase in demand dictates the need for rapid increase in generation capacity, much of which is expected to be in the form of emission‐free renewable energy power generation, including the highly heterogeneous energy sources such as wind and solar. We have already seen the growth of such power generation in the past decade. This presentation evaluated the potential of several different renewable energy power generation sources. The opportunities and challenges associated with the use of variable renewable energy sources and the role of energy storage and demand response in mitigating their variability in grid‐connected and off‐grid (islanded microgrid) applications were discussed. Intelligent power management of multisource microgrids for improved reliability and resiliency, and a vision for a future renewable‐energy‐based Hydrogen‐economy society were also presented. Opening Talk Abstract: This talk provided an overview of networking skill development and debunks the negative connotations associated with networking. In its purest form networking is being authentically interested in the people around you. Authenticity has a powerful effect on career development.
