Topic: Some governments try to control the way a national language is used. For example they may restrict the introduction of foreign words, or the use of dialects, or they may demand that a certain language be used in schools. What are the benefits and disadvantages of these policies? Do you think they can ever be effective?

There are about 6800 different languages in the world. Even in one country, there are a lot of different dialects. Therefore, some governments may try to control the way a national language is used by restricting the introduction of foreign language or using dialects or demanding that a certain language be used in schools. These policies bring both benefits and disadvantages. However, in my point of view, these policies are not really effective.

These policies will help to increase people’s unite in the country. Every citizen in the country uses only one national language, instead of using dialects. Therefore, it is easier for them to understand each other, to communicate with each other. Furthermore, they are not affected much by other languages. Some terrorists take advantages of studying foreign languages to separate the country. Hence, with the control of the government, citizens are not affected by this. Furthermore, the country can protect their culture better. Their culture is not mixed or absorbed with others.

However, if the government restricts the introduction of the foreign languages, the country will have fewer chances to develop. In other words, foreign languages help the country to fix with the international environment. Thus, this policy limits the opportunities to develop of the country. On the other side, the dialects play an important role in the culture. It contributes special aspects to the unique culture of one country. Restricting the use of them will make them gradually die out, so the culture will lose one important part.

The tendency to integrate with other countries will make these policies become ineffective. Languages are natural and they are used for communication, so the government will not get many results on restricting them.
