Commuter Style

Marino 52 – More like something from 007, the Alfra Vico seeks to create yachts that are distinctive in style and purpose. Revolutionary and refined at the same time. Innovative and functional, without gimmickry. Simple, clean, uncluttered, while simultaneously luxurious. Contemporary and sleek, without being Spartan. $3,000,000 alfravico.com

2 to TANGO – The latest car to hit the commuter scene is a two passenger electric beauty that goes from zero to 60 in 4 seconds flat. The TANGO gives a whole new meaning to ride sharing. Put two of them together and these little revsters fit side by side in one lane on the highway and can even share one parking space at the same time. Now that’s love. $150,000 commutercars.com

Actor George Clooney was one the 1st to snag up a little earth saver of his very own.

Make The Transition® - Say good bye to the endless parade of red tale lights that greet you on the highway at the end of each day. The Transition is the first mass produced flying car that fits effortlessly in your garage. This little bird will have you whistling all the way to work as you travel down the street to your local airstrip then spreads its wings, takes flight and gets you where you need to be in no time. $194,000 terrafugia.com

Nicole loves to dress pretty and play with her dolls. She’s a lot like other little girls – except for the fact that when Nicole was one, doctors discovered her heart was rapidly failing. She was immediately put on the transplant list at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital, where she later received the heart she needed to live. Twenty-five years ago, our heart team, led by Dr. Leonard Bailey, became the first in the world to perform infant heart transplants. Today we’re still helping children like Nicole live to be happy, vibrant, and healthy.

Celebrating the earth is nothing new for Jade Aveda, as the company honors Earth Month every year. By selling stylish t-shirts and their signature lavender scented “earth” candle and taking donations, the salon works in partnership with the Surfrider Foundation to clean up the place, specifically, the beaches. The Rancho Cucamonga team is so committed, that every year, salon owner Sarah Weeks, and her crew head out for a beach comb, picking up any and everything that doesn’t belong.

Lady Gaga hits and Kelly Clarkson favorites battled with the sound of hair dryers and laughter. No doubt, the Cut-A-Thon proved a successful event. Some Jade Aveda custom-ers even managed to get a chair massage while they waited for their time in the chair. Stylists too were filled with excitement. Kimberly and Nadia--members of the Jade Ave-da team--moved through the space in fashionable tees that supported the clean beach and clean water “movement.” And as if a happy mother earth weren’t enough incentive to spend a Friday at Jade Aveda, the salon offered up free express massages, free facials and free hair-cuts based on donations. With $1,700 raised, the salon certainly felt pleased. As did 13 year-old Marissa who had some very sleek and savvy layers added that afternoon.

An over-sized fishbowl reading, “I love my

beach,” sat at the cash wrap and clients gladly left donations after they got their new look. The fete was full of natural goodies--platters of fresh berries, grapes, cheese spreads, crackers, and lots of Sauvignon Blanc. Stylish ladies were in attendance, hip mom’s gathered with little ones, even guys were coming for their cuts. From a light trim to posh bobs, the people of the IE were supporting a well-recog-nized cause and getting their new look for the season. Lee Draper, from Savannah Cats in Corona, couldn’t have been more excited for his cut as he joked and laughed with the stylist. . A charming brunette, Audrey Avila, went from a long ‘do to a sleek cut in a matter of minutes.

Tantastic, Redlands

The only thing that rhymes with “fantastic” is tantastic. Set your sights on Tantastic Tanning in Redlands. It’s one of the most innovative salons in the area, with a com-mitment to new methods and state of the art equipment. Tantastic encourages guests to “take it up a notch,” and that’s easy to do when they offer three levels of tanning. Start with the Velocity, HP 1000. It’s a high pressure, major browning bed that delivers those luxury results in fifteen minutes, tops. This open design, futuristic bed is one of the most advanced and coveted in the tanning world. Darque Tan, Chino HillsA tanning salon where the energy makes you want to show off your dance moves? That’s Darque Tan in Chino Hills. The high-energy spot offers some of the most advanced practices in tanning today, employing a full-time cleaning staff and highly trained consultants. As if the luxe digs (touch screen technology to display the salon menu) and the reputation weren’t enough, the beds are makings of the sunless gods. The location plays home to more than 20 tanningbeds. Considering themselves the “ultimate in tanning power,” Darque Tan offers five levels of tanning in futuristic tanning beds. The big deal? The High Pressure P-90. You’d be surprised at what can happen in twelve minutes. The bed offers quadruple misty breeze with double jets and wave control, three levels of body intensity and four levels of facial intensity, high performance stereo speakers (you must get your grove on as you gleam) and a self-contained air conditioner. It makes sense that something this beautiful, could beautify you. This is a 5-Star luxury system that can’t be beat. Level two beds or Lotus beds (akin to purple spaceships), take up 20 minutes of your time, but come complete with adjustable facial lamps and multi-speed fans for body cooling. Kick it up to level three and you’re dealing with the S-Class. Twelve minutes of tanning and three afterbronze minutes later leave you with a gorgeous glow. The double cooler and aromatic lounge doesn’t hurt either. Go Mystic and you’re done in 60 seconds. Darque Tan likes giving away freebies as much as they like to color their clients. From lotions to free mystics, Darque Tan wants to give back. Upland is a well populated city incor-porated in 1906 and sits at a 1,242 foot elevation. A city that maintains many of its historic features from the iconic street Euclid, to its commitment to citrus fruits and a lush landscape. Once coined, “The City of Gracious Living,” Upland, California makes you wish for lazy sum-mer days spent in the park and strolls through the delicate neighborhoods with ice cream in hand. There’s an old fashioned charm that takes up residence in the small city. Perhaps, it’s the ranch-style homes, the arching tree tops, the locally owned bicycle shoppe, flower gardens that crowd residential streets or the train tracks that run through the city. It’s hard to tell. But there’s no doubt that Upland is a tight-knit community with touches of style that lie along its streets.

Things are looking Upland

Downtown Upland is marked by a precious arch-way bearing the town’s moniker. Not too far in the distance sits a white gazebo that’s perfect for a summertime break. A leisurely walk down 2nd Street will most likely land you at the doorstep of Purvis Gallery. If the Marilyn Monroe vignette in the storefront doesn’t draw you in, the black and yellow doors will. A glamorous black and white

scene outfi ts the window. A stunning printed image of the bombshell takes center stage, while curated accessories adorn the rest of the space. Mirrored candelabras, glistening chandeliers, black and white feather-trimmed pillows, a luscious mirrored vanity and screen printed wall-paper all call this space their own. It’s gorgeous! Purvis Gallery has been standing for twenty years (ten in Upland) and its no wonder as the full-service shop creates custom prints, custom artwork and custom wallpaper. Plainly put, if you have a favorite print, you can have it all over your walls with the help of the artists at Purvis. Recently, the gallery designed a wallpa-per with inlaid miniature mirrors to resemble diamonds...a home enthusiasts dream, indeed.

The owner, Art Purvis, handles his customers with care and always has them top of mind. He’s been able to provide the people of Upland (as well as local and international visitors) with unique, hard-to-fi nd pieces without sending them into the poor house. Purvis Gallery keeps things fresh with rare German artwork, porcelain vases from Korea, lust-worthy chandeliers, dainty zebra-printed sitt ing chairs and hand-craft ed art pieces. A few stores down and you will have stumbled upon Ellare Clothing Boutique, a tongue in cheek spot that touched down on Upland soil in November 2008. The colorful shopping desti-nation, owned by Lily Ramos, is fi lled with denim favorites and summer sizzlers. From Frankie B. Jeans, to studded Rock n’ Republic jean shorts, to sunshine friendly white jeans, Ellare is fully stocked. Lilly also believes in bringing in smaller lines as well as indie designers to maintain that local feel. Consider this an equal opportunist shopping adventure. Lily has worked with design students in the past to develop, produce and carry their initial collec-tions. The local love runs deep at Ellare. VaVa Voom is one of the small name designs with big style that meets all of your summer denim needs. Think organic fabric and an equally eco-wash for the seasonal rompers. Seamless day to night transition are a must among the Upland set. When Lily’s not keeping her ear to the ground for fresh, new designs, or hushing her sweet little chihuahua, the design school alum (who carries her own designs in-store) fills the place with must have Ed Hardy bikinis and monoki-nis, sunglasses and board shorts for the boyfriend. Ellare is also the only Upland spot to score body wash, lotion, hand-poured candles and fizz balls by luxe brand LR Boutique. For more LR excitement, you’ll set your sights on Lady Revolution, Lily’s line. It’s a whimsical mix of screen-printed tees and jersey dresses (yes, you can expect the maxis), that are crafted with versatility, comfort and quality in mind.

Chances are all of the shopping has left you needing a bit of a recharge. Upland has no shortage of eateries, but if it’s an iced latte and small bites you seek, Boomers Coffeehouse is the place for you. It sits nearby the Metrolink station, so its easy people watch while you sip. Though

the exterior has a retro feel, the inside is anything but. The mod interior is made up of Bertoia side chairs, tulip tables and chairs, mid-century couches and an iconic baby blue fireplace. Clusters of light are situated overhead, offering color-infused light and the long bar, which might look like a prime place for martinis, is lit by cylin-der lights in “coffee sleeves.” The brew is gourmet and the machiato is divine as are the long list of ice-blended beverages and cold tea lattes. The Chai Loco is the must have beverage—it’s where chai and espresso meet. Now there’s the energy you needed! Gail and Lance, the owners, are committed to delivering natural good-ness and free WiFi(can’t complain there).

No doubt, you’re amped up and ready to continue your adventure through this gracious town. Get ready to kick off your shoes at the Upland newcomer, Theory Nail Lounge. The spot opened last winter and has been gathering a cultish following ever since. Maybe it’s the spa-like atmosphere, maybe it’s the non-traditional set-up or maybe it’s the exotic acrylic options (150 to boot) and the array of nail colors (OPI and China Glaze, naturally) to chose from.myspace.com/boomerscoffee

Whatever it is, you’ll wiggle your toes with excitement as you sink into one of the cozy, custom designed leather chairs and prep for your pedi. Serene hues of green, champagne, taupe and a soft blue make up the back of the house palate, but the unique, trendy space outfits the front of the house with bright red leather chairs and stations for manicured customers. It doesn’t matter if it’s fingers or toes getting the treatment, because your whole being is getting the special treatment. You’ll find cubbie holes just for your handbag, double pedi stations if you want to lounge back with a beau or bff (or maybe even your mom), the hot stone Theory Exclusive pedi, six treatment rooms for waxing and massage and an extra-sanitary experience. Imagine, a place where tools are used once and pedi sinks are lined.

Your day in Upland is coming to a close, but you still need to find the grub, which should be easy as pie or pasta.

Skip over to Upland’s famed, authentic Italian deli and grocer, Claro’s Italian Market. The small market is reminiscent of a 1950’s East Coast scene. The shelves are stocked with bright red cans of tomato paste, while baskets overflow with fresh Italian loaves. The spe-cialty food store imports most of their prod-uct directly from the “booted” source. Fill your basket with imported pastas, rich herbs and authentic candies like Torrone, order a box of Italian cookies or panettone. You’ll find yourself in a culinary wonderland.

Surely, you’ve found pure bliss. But this is also the home of serious creativity. For acrylic loving ladies, the lounge offers 3D raised nail art. Deck out your digits in pretty summer flowers or even, yes, even Miss Hello Kitty herself. One of Theory’s top technicians, Kellie, boasts over twelve years in the business. She knows nails. Make it a party at Theory if you’d like. Grab a group of girls, bring in your favorite flick and pedi up with your besties. And to show you just how far a trip to the nail salon has come, you can book online to guarantee your spot. Who else can offer you that?

High-quality olive oils are yours for the taking as well. But probably the most pleasing part of Claro’s is the deli. In tra-ditional fashion, you’ll take a number and await one of the butchers to fulfill your needs. Antipastos, seafood, cured meats, salads, soups and catered platters are only the beginning. You can score a delicious sandwich between these walls; perhaps, one of the best west of the Mississippi! Meatballs and provolone have never done you so right. Claro’s also offers up tons of Old World recipes and hosts cooking classes from time to time. Now that’s amoré.

Simplistic Elegance Takes Up Residence

Deck out your digs in flee market style finds and grab a gift or two. Castles & Cottages call The Crossings its new home.

By Candace S. Abbott

Agrand city goes hand in hand with an equally spectacular market. Townspeople and visitors gather weekly to scoop up unique trea-

sures and delicate finds. They rush home to integrate the new addition into their growing collection. It’s only natural to then beam with pride over the wonderment the new object has created. Corona is not one of the world’s big cities nor does it strive for such a title. However, it does offer its townspeople the joy of a personal treasure, thanks to a small shoppe, Castles & Cottages. For the traveler who’s had to halt exotic excursions or the gift giver or avid collector, this charming store-front is the market you’ve all been waiting for.

After a recent relocation from Dos Lagos to the Corona Crossings, Castles & Cottages has found the perfect home. The shoppe is nestled along a walking path, just a few feet from a babbling brook and without trying, immediately commands your attention.

Upon entry you’re greeted by what looks like a savvy dinner party. A solid black wooden table plays home to a host of cheeky serving platters with sayings like, “Dining In is the New Dining Out” and “Life is Short, Eat Dessert First.” Hefty white flour tins, salt & pepper shakers, butter dishes, salad platesand the like all sit pretty, just waiting to besnatched up by an appreciative owner.

Page 57: ieStyle Mag Jun/July Issue

A few steps to the left and you’ll find a Proven-cal wonderland, where lavender sachets, soaps and delicate purple trinkets dwell. Across the way is what the store owner, Adelle Montoya, has dubbed “le bebe.” This sweet vignette features pink and blue sparkling gifts, soft blankets, layettes, baby beanies and all of the little extras to prepare for the arrival of a precious little person.

I t’s clear that this place is an amalgam of all things femme and sweet. But like any woman, there’s a splash of the wild

side. Past the rustic candelabras, sequined tissue boxes, powder puffs, sterling silver tea strainers, cabbage roses, mosaic mirrors, bridal musts (“I Do” shoe appliqués, perhaps), French-milled soaps and crèmes, you’ll find leopard print aprons, zebra throws and animal printed martini glasses. Surely, you’re in a “girl’s night out” heaven. This edgy side of Castles & Cottages doesn’t stop with a few primal patterns. Vintage inspired hand mirrors tell who’s the fairest of them all with the word “Diva” etched onto the frame. An old-fashioned case is filled with…no, not fresh water pearls, but blinged out accessories including bracelets, monogram necklaces, computer mice and even calcula-tors. It’s enough to leave you taking up resi-dence with the glitterati. The owner herself has made no secret of saying these are the items she loves. So, Adelle makes it her goal

to bring these special things close to home. Adelle’s travels to the whimsical shoppes in Orange County and the off-the-beaten-path nooks of Santa Barbara have inspired much of her offerings. It’s a coastal feel, just a stone’s throw from your home. And by coastal, one could interpret that as Trans-Atlantic. The “Parisian Loft”vignette has enough Francophile power to leave Amelie questioning her allegiance. Eiffel Tower lamps make for a perfect room addition as do coffee table books that’ll inspire and teach you the art of the French home. Oh la la, for sure!

Perhaps, it’s a personalized gift you’re after, like one of Cynthia H. Designs ID bracelets or a Fringe jewelry tray or you just need a pick-me-up gift for yourself…..Castles & Cottages is Corona’s magical little nook that just happens to be a royal success.

Change PositionsStart sweating. ieStyle Mag has the skinny on three new and sexy ways to do it!By Candace S. Abbott

We have been programmed to believe that a decent workout session requires a mind-numbing thirty minutes on a cardio machine. Sure, the gym is a familiar and loyal friend, but the thought of the elliptical can sometimes prove to be less than exciting way to spend post-office hours or a Saturday morning. So, conundrum arrives--get your body moving, enjoy yourself and maybe, just maybe, even learn something. The answer to the common riddle is simple. Explore the latest fitness trends sweeping the land. There is no watching the clock or calculating calories involved, just a serious workout, serious results and serious fun.

Belly Up

Enroll in a belly dancing class at Anahata Movement Arts in Riverside...today! A host of skilled instructors, some like Aziza Sa’id, a well-known and celebrated teacher with over 30 years of experience, will leave you impressed with yourself in no time. You’ve trusted the classics for your wardrobe, it’s time you applied the same to your wellness regime. While most first-timers are familiar

with the rapid lower body shaking, full body rolls and shimmies as “belly dancing,” much of the movement is dictated by the hips. The belly is the strength and sustains the move-ment, but much of the work happens at the hips. In the West, we’ve come to recognize this traditional dance as a workout (because we are in constant search of a cardio replacement), but this style of dance has its roots in Middle East, as both the Arabic dance, raqs sharqi and Turkish çiftetelli. Both of these types of dance are tightly knit with celebratory events. At the studio, beginners happily enter the world of forward and backward figure eights. This hips-only move is initially more difficult than you’ll anticipate, though the snake-like quality soon registers. Eventually, the lower body will create a crafty equation with ease. From there, a pleasant instructor, such as Ash’a, revels the calculated movements of sways and mayas.

So it goes, you’ll find yourself forming a frame with the arms that draws the audience eye to the isolated hip movement. They move in a sinuous motion or create curves around the body. Chest bumps, gushes, graceful transi-tions and full body shimmies don’t go unaddressed in a beginner’s lesson. By the end of that first class you’ll know that some sort of aerobic activity had ensued. But mostly you’ll find pleasure with the overall spirit that fills the room. What’s more, you’ll secretly wish to perform a farewell dance to the cardio isle.

Spin City

No bikes, no crowded classes, no bulky thighs. The new way to spin is

with your upper body. Say hello to The SpinGym®. The SpinGym is a serious workout designed to tone, strengthen and sculpt your arms, chest, back and shoulders. Who thought to marry three pieces of aluminum alloy and a heavy duty cord? None other than Forbes Riley (yes, that’s her real name). You’ve seen her face all over your television and felt her energy blast through the screen. She’s the forty-something wife and mother of twins, who’s business savvy is as strong as her grip. After birthing her twins (who each weighed 7 pounds), Forbes needed a way to kick the baby weight and so this Gyro-tronic Resistance Training piece was born. Thanks to this lady, you can plan to look lavish in tank tops this season. Accordingto Forbes SpinGym, unlike weights and machines, which target one muscle group at a time, “Activatesand fires multiple muscle groups simultaneously--working both major and minor muscle groups in addition to stabilizing muscles.” Here’s your chance to lose the arm flab. SpinGym means no weight or bands and you control the resistance (based on how fast and how hard you pull). Expect anywhere from 4 to 23 pounds per pull. Forbes gladly teaches you over a dozen exercises and ways to use your new found friend. You’re going to love your toned upper body, but you’re really going to love the commitment. SpinGym doesn’t need thirty minutes of your day--give that to the shoe department at Nordstrom. Give it a 5 minute go round (2 to 3 times a day) and you’re done. If you’re bored at your desk, waiting at the DMV, waiting on your latte, waiting on your date, you can bust out the handy and compact little gym. You can save the excuses this season. www.myspingym.com

A to Zumba

I f your mantra is “Ditch the workout, join the party,” you’re in! The craze that’s taken over your gym is called Zumba®. It’s a come-hither

homage to “hypnotic Latin rhythms” and dance moves. Consider this: Sign up, walk in and for the next hour experience an energizing and calorie-burning good time. Zumba made it’s debut in the early 1990’s thanks to a gentleman by the name of Beto Perez (celeb fitness trainer). In his native Colombia, Beto was teaching an aerobics class. He forgot his music but improvised--like a real star--and hosted a class that bubbled over with salsa and Meringue. This movement shook the workout world and hit Miami first. Now’s it’s

everywhere. It’s not just another “sweat-in to the oldies” kind of class. Zumba Fit-ness classes fuse together “interval train-ing sessions with fast and slow rhythms and resistance training.” The end result is a tone and sculpted body, because you’ve burned off the fat. The variation in beats allows each muscle group to get special attention. The Zumba Fitness Program makes easy transitions from cardio to toning to strengthening with calculated beat and tempo changes. It’s like being at the hottest Latin dance club in your workout gear. And if you’re not sure what to expect in terms of moves, know that Zumba borrows from Cumbia, Belly Dancing, Mambo, Samba, Tango, Salsa, Hip-hop, Flamenco and a few oth-ers. The pounds literally melt off as you work up a sweat and laugh while doing it. Instructors are licensed and trained, so don’t worry about being steered by a rhythm-less nation. Oh, and if for some ridiculous reason you travel out of the IE, you can pick up Zumba in 75 differ-ent countries. Shake your grove thing and the pounds all at once. Zumba® is offered at LA Fitness and 24HourFitness Clubs throughout the Inland Empire. www.zumba.com

A Walk in the ParkCorona’s Premier Dental Spa Proves Dental Has Gone Gentle

Think back to your last trip to the dentist. Chances are you’ve taken yourself back to a quaint office where wave music plays and a peculiar smell lingers. You’re re-visiting the day you learned that a root canal was a must. Pre-op jitters begin to creep in and above all, the thought of the forthcoming pain escalates. Dr. Coracel Tem-plo-Johnson decided to prove that not all dentist offices are created equal. By replacing the cavity drill with the post-visit massage thrill, Parkridge Dental Spa has made a place for itself as one of the Inland Empire’s top spots for cosmetic dentistry, Lumineers, cosmetic bleaching, Invisalign, white fillings and yes, microdermabrasion.

It’s not often that the words “den-tal” and “spa” coexist, but under the Parkridge roof, the two form an unquestionable union. Gone are the stiff chairs outfitted in plastic and offensive fluorescent lighting. Wave music has left the building along with a constant video loop of Titanic. Replacing the usual suspects are oversized and ultra comfortable chairs, trickling fountains, computerized treatments, soothing tunes (think spa serenity), relaxing lighting and spa treatments during your dental services. And in traditional spa fashion, the staff is as friendly as they are thorough.

Arriving at Parkridge Dental Spa might lead you to forget you’re there for dental work, because like an oasis, the spa is tucked away from the busy streets of Corona. Although it makes its home on a humble corner spot just off of Main, the dental spa exudes a serious sense of grandeur. An earthen exterior makes way for a posh interior that suggests a day of pampering lay ahead. Candles are lit and fresh white orchids adorn the treatment rooms, massage tables are awaiting the next patient and a sweet smell fills the place. So, though a day of relaxation may be on the brain, most patients arrive

for crowns and bridges with a royal treatment employed. Parkridge Dental Spa is ad-vanced enough to offer sleep dentistry, Twilight (heavy sedation) and IV sedation for those ladies (and gents) who don’t exactly relish dental services. Come back from an oral surgery and soften up with paraffin treatments, an oxygen facial, acupressure, or some hot stone massage therapy. Relaxed and radiant? That’s the look the ladies of the Inland Empire are truly after. And why not add a little extra? Parkridge has a licensed nurse practitioner that is trained in Botox and dermal fillers.

Age-old hair removal methods have taken the

backseat to a much sweeter option. Welcome,

Body Sugaring.

Wax Not, Want Not

Standing about 5 foot 2, Lina Kennedy, is a Cana-dian-born wonder woman and world authority on hair extraction, who loves to wax poetic on the

benefits of sugar (this is the only kind of waxing Lina has anything to do with). However, she’s not talking about that stuff the doctors are telling you to stay away from, it’s all about Body Sugaring. Ms. Kennedy’s a delightful woman filled with humorous stories and anecdotes, but the most impressive of all her tales takes you back to the early nineties when Lina discovered the ancient Middle Eastern tradition of Advanced Body Sugaring. When Lina caught wave of the hair removal method, she immediately foresaw the magnitude to which this trend would grow. It’s hygienic, eco-friendly and almost painless (by hair removal standards). Lina candidly shares tales of friends sharing their horror stories with me about waxing, electrolysis and never-ending shaving nicks and scrapes...”I wanted to help them achieve a painless beauty life.”

Think back to the last time you made an appointment to get your bikini line smoothed. You were probably cringing

and left with an unsightly mass of red spots. Sugaring makes redness, ingrowns and dis-comfort a thing of the past. With the summer months on the forefront, the last thing you want decorating your bikini bott oms is a host of ingrowns. Lina personally trains each of her practitioners--meaning every lady that’s touching your lady-parts has spent hours learning the art of sugaring and they each specialized in the Perfect LA Bikini™ and spa services. You won’t leave burned or with strange skin aliments. The Sugaring Paste is applied by hand (no strips) and massaged into the skin where it’s then allowed to seep into the skin. Don’t question it--lett ing the paste seep means it’s gett ing into the follicle for a pain-free exodus. Body Sugaring is a must for any woman (or man) who’s ready to rid themselves of unwanted hair. From head to toe, literally (a full leg hair removal includes the toes), sugaring takes it all off !

These days, Lina is circling the globe and educating people on the wonders of Advanced Body Sugaring. But if you’re lucky, you can catch her in the studio spreading her good cheer, praising her puppy Sebastian and telling you to NEVER touch an ingrown, shave or tweeze in between treatments, leave the magic to the “Sugaring Ladies.”

Studio Alexandria is located at:11740 San Vicente Blvd.Suite 105, Brentwood310.492.5070For more information on Advanced Body Sugaring or if you’re a licensed aesthetician interested in learning the process go to www.studioalexandriala.com.

By Candace S. Abbott

So what exactly is Body Sugaring? It’s a unique, not to mention advanced, process that removes the “fuzz” and conditions your skin by using a one-hundred percent natural product. It all starts with Alexandria Professional Sugar Paste (Lina boasts exclusive ownership rights to the product line). The Sugar Paste is so natural that you could eat it--no wax resins, no chemicals and completely bio-degradable. Sugaring grabs hold of those ultra fi ne and obnoxiously coarse hairs and because of it’s grainy makeup, the paste exfoliates dead skin cells leaving you with baby soft skin.

Ace of SpaceThe Ace Hotel and Swim Club has made its mark on the kick back culture, but turning a poolside afternoon with strangers into a family-like affair is the work of genius. Pack up a vintage suitcase this summer, then put the top down and high-tail it to Palm Springs

(an ieStyle editor favorite). There’s no such thing as boredom in these parts. Monday nights aren’t your average lay on the couch and recoup from the weekend kind of nights. Instead, plan for a night of “Rose Tatt oo Bingo” at the Amigo Room (the on property bar). Palm Springs’ own, Linda Gerard, ups the ante with a flamboyant evening of every one’s favorite game. According to the Ace, she has done

a way with Judy Garland tunes. If bingo isn’t your thing, make the Amingo Room your Thursday and Friday night spot for funk, house, hip hop, disco and music that makes you just want to dance with resident DJs, DJ Day (who’s shared the stage with Amy Wine-house) and Howie Pyro, a NYC native who hosts Intoxcia Radio live from the Amigo Room. The Ace never falls short, so it’s no surprise that they’re the go to locale for a weekend wind down. Roll out of bed in your bikini and make your way to the pool, where DJ Victor Rodriguez is in charge of the beats. He’s a cool-scene vet, as he helped to create the LA club vibe you know and love.

Let the friendly people of the property tell you; it’s one big happy BBQ! Sometimes they’re dishing up tacos, sometimes it’s sliders, sometimes you’ll choose a roasted pear salad, but not matter the fare, there are plenty of clean, organic cocktails. Kiwi Caphirina, anyone? Ignore the triple-digit temperatures, the Ace manages to keep it cool all week long.

Nothing says “It’s June,” like a picnic in the park. Get the checkered table cloth out, fill your basket with wine, cheese, fruit spreads, cured meats and a rustic loaf from the local market and make it a cool summer night at Redlands Bowl. Sure, the Hollywood Bowl is great, but the drive isn’t. The outdoor amphitheater experience doesn’t have to be limited to just Angelenos, IE music lovers need a night of Chopin too. The Redlands Bowl, in all its grandeur, has been standing tall since 1923 and seventy-seven years later, it still attracts a ready and willing set. A Ms. Grace Stewart Mullen established the tone for a cultural venue to welcome the performing arts all summer long. And ever since her dream became a reality, the stone building perched among a handful of charming homes has welcomed visitors from all over.Today, an estimated eight billion

have frequented the beloved Bowl. The 2010 Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival schedule kicks off with Anthony Kearns, an Irish tenor, and Frank Paul Fetta conducting to a classical connoisseurs fancy. Surely, your Tuesday and Friday evenings won’t be the same this summer. Moving through a delightful set of orchestra performances, jazz nights, a Navy Band, a “Night at the Opera: Famous Arias,” and an Inland Pacific Ballet performance of “The Little Mermaid,” the season is sure to please. Need more incentive to go “bowling?” All performances are free. Classical enjoyment, a stitch of refined entertainment and the possibility of a few Pinot induced memories are a veer from the norm, but as you already know, change is a good thing.

The days are longer, so that dark pub that you and your best girls go for a happy hour isn’t going to cut it this season. Downtown Riverside’s newest gem, Crescent Jewell Restaurant & Lounge--New Orleans inspired Creole/Cajun fusion restaurant, that bursts with flavor (literally). Crescent Jewells menu is one of the best these parts have seen in a while. Simply put, it’s a gourmand’s dream come true, featuring Braised Short Ribs, Blackened Filet Mignon and “N’awlins” favorites like Po’Boys, Shrimp & Grits and Jambalaya. The jovial spot is decked out

with shiny hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, luxe seating throughout, a back-lit (and fully stocked) bar and a grand piano. The patio begs for attention, especially on Saturday nights when the DJ spins a set and live jazz spills from indoors. Feel free to dance. In fact, a little dance floor action is encouraged. Crescent Jewell is an elegant blend of nightlife and nostalgia. Think back to the Jazz Age and enjoy a French 75 with the girls. It’s going to be a long and happy summer.

The I.E. always delivers a cruel, cruel summer. But don’t let the heat get you down. Take a drive on the 15 and prep for some chicks and dip. Clarity? A Loft Hotel (who calls Ontario-Rancho Cucamonga it’s home) offers poolside pleasures every-day of the week at Splash Out-door Pool. The non-salt water pool comes complete with WiFi, so if you just want to get away from your desk this July and email a client or two, consider this your spot. Ambient tunes spill out of the speakers from 6am to 11pm. That means you’re welcome to dip from sun up until sun down--literally. Splash Pool has those relaxing aqua hues that A Loft has become known for. And the digs are super mod.

Craddle-like seating help youunwind in the 909 heat, while cute tables and chairs beg that you order a midday cocktail from XYZ bar. Linger late into Thursday, around 8pm, and prep for some serious beats served up by DJ diva, Amanda Rose. She spins all of your favorite 80’s and indie tracks until, well, the pool closes. Or if it’s Wednesday that suits your suit, sip in your two piece on Wine Flight Wednes-days, which kicks off as soon as your laptop shuts off (5pm). It’s a chance to taste local varietals and meet a few new folks.

you the “gossip.” You’ll get a map of the sky to take home to share all of this new found knowledge with your buddies. Lake Arrowhead is one of the best spots in the world for star gazing. Now don’t you feel elite? But before you set your sights high, you might want to head over for a fireside chat on the resort’s private beach and learn about the lake or hear a few tall tales. Roast marshmallows, sip wine and maybe even take in a sunset. Ahhhh the good life.

Eastern Infl uence: The Art Insti tute of California, Inland Empire Hosts the work of Jerry Muller By Candace S. Abbott

Every now and then big city energy takes over the Inland Empire. Last April, it arrived in the form of poignant black and

whites. The illustrious work of award-winning photographer, Jerry Muller, was showcased at The Art Institute of California, Inland Empire campus. About thirty people--students, faculty, community members and art enthusiasts alike-gathered in the pristine gallery to view Mr. Muller’s latest installment, “New York Revisited 1950-1955” and hear him speak. During those fi ve formative years, Jerry captured the cityscapes of New York City, scenic moments on Long Island and took dozens of portraits.

At the casual cocktail event, Jerry spoke candidly about the photos and about his time in New York City, explaining the excitement of going from high school graduate to well-known photo-illustrator’s assistant in the city. Jerry learned the in’s and out’s of the Madison Avenue advertising agencies, dabbled in their large color labs and began to develop a penchant for other photographer’s work. He was feeling professional and played with his camera options; he did so over the years, but had a fond appreciation for his Rolleiflex camera (used by the his heroes, Halsman, Penn, Avedon).

Most of the exhibit photos were shot using the Rolleifl ex. And seeming like a trip back in time, music seeped into the gallery as people looked on at images of Anita Ekberg, “La Dolce Vita’s Sylvia,” in a dramatic costume, images of Muller’s younger sister at diff erent times in her life,

“Mahatt an Monday,” a striking 1953 image of clothes strewn on the line. People peered at architectural images of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Empire State building. Though each image conjured a yearning for and old-timey Big Apple, none so much as two identical photographs that outlined the exhibit and Jerry’s versatility. The same image of Wall Street taken minutes apart--one that shows a trenchal downpour and the other when the rains have soft ened--left the crowd in awe. Mr. Muller described the appeal of both, one for artistic quality, the other for romantic quality. His candid and honest images have been bought by Kodak, printed and reprinted. However, to have seen the original work and that man behind the lenses was astounding, as all att endees would have agreed.

“Keep searching, keep shooting. Film is cheap, art is long, time is fl eeting.” -Jerry Muller

Let this summer getaway get the best of you. Wiggle your toes at the Sand. written by: Candace S. Abbott

Suite Idea

The Surf & Sand Resort is a bevy of nooks and crannies leading you to one charming spot after another. Down the steps and a twist and turn will drop you off at the resort’s newly remodeledpool. No visit to the resort is complete without a trip to the pool. Calm pool waters coupled with thunderous calls of the Pacific, and a mod backdrop set the scene for a sun-kissed afternoon. The Surf & Sand pool area features mesh, white lounge chairs and an equally posh, and relatively large, white canopy. The look is plucked from South Beach, but booming with SoCal cool.

Just like its own little world off of Highway 1, the resort abides by its own rules. The resort offers 165 guestrooms, which includes 13 luxurious suites, a full service spa and a very popular restaurant, Splashes. An appropriately outfitted lobby…..a muted palate filled with brightly hued orchids is where this journey begins. Immediately you’re whisked into that “little world.” Open doors and windows allow for a swift ocean breeze to carry you out to the courtyard of aqua, tan and brown cushioned seating and firepits. You can peer out at the locals walking their dogs or rock formations in the distance.

“Good Morning” adopts a new meaning as you take your morning stretch tangled in luxurious, white damask striped sheets and open your eyes to the the Pacific Ocean. It’s now a “great morning.” Light waves crash against the sand, seagulls perch on your balcony, and the coffee is as fresh as the scene. But this is all par for the course when staying at the Surf & Sand Resort in Laguna Beach.

ieStyle Jun/Jul 2010 83

Page 86: ieStyle Mag Jun/July Issue

The two-by-two lounge situation is ideal for a catch up session with your best girlfriend as you sip Surf & Sand Sangria (a mix of lemonade, Skyy vodka, port wine and fresh fruit) and order Maine Lobster Clubs (with avocado mayo). Plush towels are always on hand. The aquatic playground continues to impress with a fresh poolside bar and Barbie-pink and white cushioned couches lining the location. Sunbathing poolside pairs nicely with oceanfront views.

scene has put your being at ease, there are still treatments to be had. Mud wraps and moisturizing facials are only the beginning. The spa, which roots itself in tranquility, offers waxing services, massages, nail care, men’s skincare, yoga and even in-room bath rituals (complete with aromatic bath condiments); but perhaps the most enticing of treatments are the seasonal treatments. A ginger-citrus sugar scrub followed up by a vishi shower rinse, a back of the body massage, body butter wrap and cranial massage put you in the mood for a long luxurious nap. Aquaterra therapists are like no other when it comes to detail and customization. You’ll feel as though your treatment was designed only for you. No doubt, you’re feeling well.

Lazy afternoons in your bikini get followed up by a bit of healing and wellness. Another tuck and turn, through the archway and past ivy lined archways, open up to a delicate courtyard of olive trees, benches, hanging lanterns and a stone fountain. Here sits Aquaterra Spa. This oasis requires you check in at the spa boutique where Voluspa candles, Essie nail polish, Malie body creams and more make their home. You’re then escorted to an ivy covered building. Upon entering you’re greeted with sweet scents emanating from vents throughout. The men’s and ladies lounges both host steam rooms and private hydro-spas for pre or post-relaxation treatment. Once you’ve slipped into the plush spa robes and slippers, a relaxation lounge, a decadent room of earth toned couches, rich colored walls, a mosaic fireplace and soft lighting, begs for your presence. Here fruit, tea and Evian is to be enjoyed with ease. And though the

Cocktail hour at the Surf & Sand is easily arrived at when the famous Splashes is your watering hole. Known for it’s location, perched above the sand and mere feet from the water, Splashes also gets recognition for the quintessential, American coastal cuisine at the head of Chef Louis Butler and as a favorite among the Real Housewives of Orange County. It’s difficult not to gravitate toward the water ’s edge restaurant. A no-holds wine list of over 300 wines pleases the grape-lovers and cocktail connoisseurs get served too with unique spins on classic drinks. The decked out dining room sets a tone of elegance and comfort, while the menu is a beachside gourmand’s dream.

84 ieStyle Jun/Jul 2010

Page 87: ieStyle Mag Jun/July Issue

Maine Lobster Bisque, Steamed Carlsbad Mussels and Organic Cheery Tomato and Goat Cheese Tart entice the palate. Impressive mains like Seared Viking Village Scallops and Grilled Swordfish leave you satiated, indeed! Luscious chocolate pot de cremes, Lemon Ricotta Cheesecake, sorbets and after dinner drinks and ports send you away with a smile. Dine outside and invite the waves to join.

A full day at the Surf & Sand leaves you feeling relaxed or more appropriately, it leaves you feeling serene. In the suite, shutters are opened to reveal the resort’s backyard, the ocean and it’s neighbors, a village of nearby shops and restaurants, as well as the beauty in the distance, those masses of purple flowers that spill out of Laguna Beach cliffs. The resort’s attention to detail is apparent in each room thanks to custom furnishing; seashell handles adorn each drawer. The soft, beachy palate (think ivory and white) of the Surf & Sand rooms helps to continue the thread of relaxation; tweed chaise lounges, coral striped chairs, luscious orchids, oversized bath towels, Aveda amenities, a jet-filled bathtub that opens to your suite and a welcoming king size bed are truly the makings of peace on earth. Or at least that’s what you’ll believe during your stay on the property. Each room faces the water, so you’ll never worry about missing a wave while hanging on your personal balcony. And bathrobes await guests to enhance the retreat experience, while iPod docs, WiFi and Flatscreen TVs keep you connected day and night. You’ll turn in for the evening, but wake up anxious to do it all over again.

As you relax in your room, sliding glass doors thrown open, you’ll feel that familiar cool breeze invite itself in again and you’ll see nothing but a shimmering blue-green mass. Sailboats dance along the water, waves stir up every few seconds and then a peaceful silence arrives as the shoreline escapes and reminds you that this is what summers are made of!
