Looking up from the pit the sky is the limit.

Organising a meeting in Athens at this very moment in time has been a great experience. There’s this very special fact that for the first time in its existence IETM visits the birthplace of Europa, the cradle of our democracy and the source of the western performing arts. At the same time we realise Greece has lived several millennia since, including quite rough times both for its democracy and for the performing arts. And that it is living such a period right now. That sheer fact appeals stronger to the core values of IETM than our love for the glorious Hellenic history. Even though we love to come across its ample relics, IETM has come here to reflect on current issues that the Greek and many others in our sector are being confronted with today. And that many more of us will soon face themselves. Because in this globalised world everything resonates - indeed - around the globe.It’s reassuring to realise that this interconnectedness is not only true for the economic crisis or the crisis of democracy. It is even more true for the positive energy coming loose at so many places on earth where people start to realise we can’t go on like this. That we shouldn’t waste a good crisis, but turn it into a transition. After offering to organise an IETM Meeting in Athens – certainly without realising the amount of effort it entailed – Kelly Diapouli and the IETM Athens team have managed to sow a collaborative spirit in the local independent performing arts sector that hasn’t been witnessed before. It’s reassuring to know that even if we wouldn’t live up to the expectations of our hosts, this meeting has had a beneficial effect. Nevertheless: we owe these people, who have worked to make this event happen on voluntary basis and who will show their vibrant performances for almost nothing. We owe them heaps of respect. And there’s no better way to do so than by listening to their stories and taking them as a starting point for the discourse we will develop in the oncoming days. Knowing and showing that their story is also our story and that we are happy to get the opportunity to look in the mirror and find out what the transition implies for us.At the bottom of the pit you see only sky. I wish this IETM Athens will bring in fresh thoughts to supply us all with fresh air and fresh energy, so we can start to build our stairway to the sun.

Dear IETM members, We are thrilled to welcome you to Athens, to the first IETM Plenary Meeting taking place in Greece. We are also grateful to the IETM Board, Secretariat and members for having decided to come to Athens during these turbulent times as an act of solidarity to the Greek artists and professionals and for having supported us in many different ways during the preparation process. The idea of “Tomorrow” as the main theme of the Athens meeting came up spontaneously out of a will to focus not on the problems caused by the crisis but on possible ways to overcome it, on how, despite the present difficulties, we can empower the performing arts sector and create the preconditions for a different, more promising future. Working on this theme for more than a year now, we came to realise how difficult it is to prescribe one sole meaning for “Tomorrow”. The only definite thing we can say for tomorrow is that it is a time determination that relates closely to today and yesterday. In this respect, “Tomorrow” is a work in progress that asks for a good understanding of the past and the present. This is exactly how we have imagined IETM Athens: as an open call to contribute our dynamism, knowledge and experience and work towards designing a better future for the performing arts sector and the societies we live in. And where better to start this process than in Athens? The cradle of democracy, the birthplace of theatre and the city that today faces the challenge to overcome the financial crisis but also – and more importantly – the social turmoil caused by the crisis. Working together with the IETM Secretariat, we believe that we have developed a meeting programme that allows us to reflect on good practices of the past and the present and understand where we currently stand, in order to have an effective approach to “Tomorrow”. We have also created an artistic programme that provides you with a comprehensive picture of the contemporary Greek scene. Last, but certainly not least, we trust that you’ll find a number of occasions to enjoy the atmosphere of the city and the notorious Athens nightlife.

Chers membres de l’IETM, Nous sommes ravis de vous accueillir a Athènes pour cette première réunion plénière en terres grecques. Nous tenons tout d’abord a remercier le Conseil d’administration de l’IETM, le Secrétariat, ainsi que les membres qui ont choisi de venir a Athènes en cette période de crise pour manifester leur solidarité envers les artistes et professionnels grecs, et qui nous ont soutenus de maintes façons pendant l’organisation.L’idée du thème principal de la réunion - « Demain » - nous est venue spontanément et résulte de notre volonté de nous concentrer non pas sur les problèmes causés par la crise, mais sur les diverses façons de les surmonter ; sur comment, malgré les difficultés actuelles, nous pouvons redonner toute sa valeur au secteur des arts du spectacle et définir les conditions nécessaires a la création d’un avenir différent et plus prometteur.Après avoir travaillé sur ce thème pendant plus d’un an maintenant, nous avons pris conscience qu’il est difficile de prôner une seule et unique signification pour « Demain ». Notre seule certitude est que demain entretient une étroite relation avec le présent et le passé. A cet égard, « Demain » est un travail en cours qui requiert une véritable compréhension d’hier et d’aujourd’hui.Nous avons conçu l’IETM Athènes exactement dans cette perspective : la réunion est un appel ouvert visant a mettre a profit notre dynamisme, notre savoir, notre expérience et notre travail afin de concevoir un meilleur avenir pour le secteur des arts du spectacle et les sociétés dans lesquelles nous vivons. Et quel meilleur endroit qu’Athènes pour entamer ce processus ? Le berceau de la démocratie, le lieu de naissance du théâtre, et la ville qui, aujourd’hui, est mise au défi de surmonter la crise financière, mais aussi – et surtout – de calmer l’agitation sociale causée par la crise. Grâce a notre collaboration avec le Secrétariat de l’IETM, nous avons mis au point un programme de travail qui nous permettra de réfléchir aux bonnes pratiques du passé et du présent, et de comprendre où nous en sommes actuellement afin d’aborder « Demain » le plus efficacement possible. Nous avons également élaboré un programme artistique qui vous offrira une vue d’ensemble de la scène grecque contemporaine. Dernier point, mais non le moindre, nous espérons que vous trouverez le temps de profiter de l’ambiance de la ville et de sa vie nocturne.Bienvenue A l’IETM Athènes 2013 !

C’est en levant les yeux depuis le fond du puits qu’on s’aperçoit que le ciel est la seule limite.

En cette période, organiser une réunion a Athènes a été une expérience fantastique. Il s’agit la d’un événement spécial, car pour la première fois, l’IETM se rend sur le lieu de naissance de l’Europe, le berceau de notre démocratie et la source des arts du spectacle occidentaux. Nous comprenons alors que des millénaires se sont écoulés depuis la Grèce antique, et que ce n’est pas la première fois que la démocratie et les arts du spectacle grecs connaissent des heures difficiles. C’est ce fait précis, plutôt que notre amour pour la glorieuse histoire hellénique, qui séduit l’IETM et ses valeurs fondamentales. Même si nous adorons nous émerveiller devant les nombreuses reliques grecques, nous sommes venus ici pour réfléchir aux difficultés actuelles auxquelles sont confrontés les Grecs et bien d’autres professionnels travaillant dans notre secteur. Bientôt, beaucoup d’entre nous se retrouveront dans cette situation, car dans un contexte de mondialisation, tout résonne inexorablement a travers le monde entier.Cependant, il est rassurant de voir que cette interconnectivité ne s’applique pas seulement a la crise économique ou démocratique, mais qu’elle s’applique davantage a l’énergie positive qui émane partout sur Terre lorsque chacun se rend compte que les choses doivent changer ; que nous devons profiter de cette crise pour entamer une transition.Après avoir proposé d’organiser la réunion IETM a Athènes – sans doute sans avoir vraiment conscience des efforts que cela impliquait - Kelly Diapouli et l’équipe de l’IETM Athènes sont parvenus a semer un esprit de collaboration dans le secteur des arts du spectacle local indépendant comme on ne l’avait jamais vu auparavant.Il est bon de savoir que même si nous ne répondons pas aux attentes de nos hôtes, cette réunion aura eu un effet bénéfique. Toutefois, nous sommes redevables envers toutes les personnes qui ont travaillé sur la base du volontariat a la réalisation de cet événement et qui présenteront leurs spectacles pleins de vie pour une bouchée de pain.Nous leur devons tout notre respect. Et la meilleure façon de leur prouver est d’écouter leurs histoires et de les considérer comme le point de départ du débat que nous développerons au fil des jours a venir. Nous savons et leur montrerons que leur histoire est aussi notre histoire, et que nous sommes heureux de pouvoir nous inspirer de leurs expériences afin de déterminer ce que la transition signifie pour nous tous.Au fond du puits, le ciel est tout ce que nous pouvons entrevoir. J’espère que cette réunion IETM a Athènes sera l’occasion d’apporter des idées originales qui nous insuffleront un air nouveau et un regain d’énergie afin que nous puissions construire notre escalier vers le soleil.

Working groups: Let’s design a future (starting from Greece)

Signs of an unstable future for the arts are multiplying. In one-way or another, we are all concerned with getting through the current financial and political challenges. At the same time, it is becoming clear that our world is shifting radically. Instead of focusing on survival strategies, what if we turned our focus to the essential question: how to make this transition process a positive one? How can we rethink and reshape society? What future do we dream of for ourselves, our communities and the arts, and how do we make it real? We propose a series of three working sessions based on urgent topics that the Greek performing arts field is currently confronted with. Each session is meant to produce a concrete result: recommendations for both the IETM delegates and the (Greek) decision makers, to be presented through the course of the meeting. Format: A Greek colleague will introduce the question. We will discuss it with examples of relevant practice, and dissect and debate it before formulating steps for our positive future together. Each session will close with a list of recommendations.

En même temps, il devient évident que notre monde est en plein changement. Plutôt que de nous concentrer sur les stratégies de survie, posons-nous les vraies questions : comment faire en sorte que cette transition soit positive ? Comment pouvons-nous repenser et restructurer la société ? Quel avenir voulons-nous créer pour nous-mêmes, nos communautés et les arts ? Comment allons-nous faire de cet avenir une réalité ? Nous vous proposons une série de trois sessions de travail qui se baseront sur les thèmes urgents auxquels le secteur des arts du spectacle grecs est actuellement confronté. A l’issue de chaque session, nous devrons produire des résultats concrets, c’est-a-dire formuler des recommandations auprès des participants et des décideurs politiques (grecs) qui seront présentées durant la réunion.Format : un de nos collègues grecs présentera le sujet. IETM Athens’ artistic programme aims to provide a comprehensive overview of contemporary Greek production. In 11 dance and theatre Performances, you will discover the diverse and broad representation of the recent Greek performing arts productions. «Tomorrow» being the focus of the meeting, the curators of the programme focused intentionally on artists in their 30ies and 40ies – those whose artistic work developed before the current crisis. The performances, selected among many applications, give a snapshot of the Greek arts scene, focusing on contemporary performing artists that are already established, but are eager to connect more internationally.

However, you may also choose to discover other creative formats that we cooked up especially for you:

Kafeneio (plural: Kafeneia) is a Greek café - but it is much more than a place where you just have a coffee. You can find a Kafeneio everywhere in Greece; even in the smallest and most remote village. Traditionally, Kafeneio was reserved to the male population. It was – and in some places still is - the place where they hang around on daily basis, having their coffee, being informed and discussing the news of the day. Political conversations and confrontations are on the daily agenda of a kafeneio. The Kafeneia of IETM Athens combine this atmosphere and the work of Greek artists. Along with the performance or the performance - lecture, Kafeneia offer coffee and sweets to the participants.

Peripatos (plural: Peripatoi) is the Greek word for a walk. Peripatos is also closely related to philosophy, as it was used as a training method by philosophers during the antiquity. The IETM Athens Peripatoi take the audience in a performance-walk and at the same time, introduce the city through the point of view of the artists and invite them in a philosophical discussion.

Symposium (plural: Symposia) is well known to everybody as a both philosophical and entertainment practice. The IETM Athens Symposia offer this experience, introducing the participants to the artists’ work on the one hand and inviting them in a philosophical conversation on the other. All participants in a Symposium are being offered food and wine.

Le programme artistique de la réunion IETM a Athènes a vocation a offrir une vue d’ensemble des productions contemporaines grecques.Au fil des 11 spectacles de danse et de théâtre, vous découvrirez l’éventail des productions récentes des arts du spectacle grec. Puisque « Demain » est le maître mot de la réunion, les curateurs du programme ont volontairement mis l’accent sur des artistes d’une trentaine et d’une quarantaine d’années dont le travail a eu le temps de s’épanouir avant la crise actuelle. Les spectacles, sélectionnés parmi de nombreuses propositions, offrent un aperçu de la scène artistique grecque, et ce en se concentrant principalement sur des artistes du monde du spectacle contemporain déja bien établis, mais désireux d’entrer davantage en contact avec l’international.

Kafeneio (pluriel : kafeneia) est un café grec – mais c’est bien plus qu’un simple endroit où l’on prend un café. Il y a des kafeneia partout en Grèce, même dans les villages les plus petits et isolés. Traditionnellement, les kafeneia étaient réservés aux hommes. C’était – et ça l’est encore parfois – l’endroit où ils flânaient jour après jour, prenant un café, s’informant et discutant de l’actualité. Chaque jour au menu des kafeneia : discussions politiques et altercations. Les kafeneia de l’IETM Athènes mêlent cette atmosphère au travail des artistes grecs. Parallèlement aux spectacles ou spectacles-conférences, les kafeneia proposent des cafés et des pâtisseries aux participants.

Les peripatoi sont étroitement liés a la philosophie, puisqu’ils étaient utilisés comme méthode de formation par les philosophes pendant l’Antiquité. Les peripatoi de l’IETM Athènes emmènent les membres du public pour un spectacle-ballade, et leur font découvrir la ville a travers le point de vue des artistes, tout en les invitant a entamer une discussion philosophique.

Symposium (pluriel : symposia) est connu de tous comme étant une pratique aussi bien philosophique que de divertissement. Les symposia de l’IETM Athènes offrent cette même expérience : d’une part, ils permettent aux participants de découvrir le travail de l’artiste, et d’autre part ils les invitent a entrer dans une conversation philosophique. The manifesto of director and theater critic Joseph Bokouslav Ehcilc, entitled “The Theatre of the Microphone”, has become extremely popular with contemporary theatre ensembles all over Europe. Stages are filled of microphones, Halloween masks, cameras wired to monitors that screen the performances live. Directors and actors are organising group visits to Berlin in order to watch the performances of the Ehcilc Theatre and return back to their countries and theatres as “Beautiful as Berliners”. Per-Theater-Formance has collected the clichés of contemporary theatre and is presenting them in a performance that investigates the boundaries of originality and imitation in the art of theatre.

RootlessRoot Company was founded by Linda Kapetanea and Jozef Frucek in 2006

in Athens. They are building a language of physical expression that is chaotic, raw, and in opposition to what surrounds them both culturally and politically. Their approach is born out of their belief that the time of heroes is not gone, and that the body can still express our innermost desires, our feelings and our vision. This time, in collaboration with Hildegard De Vuyst, they grapple with the crisis of identity facing a society that seeks constancy but whose safety limits have changed. The company returns to the human dimension of things and eavesdrops on the body to redefine their position “in a moment of profound reflection on reality”.

A play that needs no introduction. A heroine that divides the audience by constantly changing faces and ways: an appalling child killer or an early feminist? A heinous criminal or a social rebel? An artful politician or an ordinary woman? The victim or the abuser? The debate unravels in front of our eyes and the decision is ours. What are the limits of our tolerance and where does our complicity begin? A contemporary performance, “Medea by Euripides” takes the shape of an ‘onstage duet’ that seeks out the origins of violence with humour, not to make a parody of the original play, but to enhance the timeless quality of Euripides’ masterpiece.

La compagnie RootlessRoot a été fondée par Linda Kapetanea et Jozef Frucek en 2006 a Athènes. A young man encounters the past while wandering through the history of a city. His past is reconstructed as he follows various associations linking Now and Then, serving witness to crucial moments in modern Greek history, illuminating the past as a reflection on the present, and asking the question of individuals within a collective memory. Immersing us in a world of imaginary reality, three women reveal different aspects of memory, as each one allows her body to tell her personal story. The performance aims to also reference the audience, by means of sound, imagery and symbols of audience members’ own recollections and memories. In recent years, prosxima’s artistic profile has focused on M. Koliopoulou’s investigation of the body as an embodied message carrier, using practice as a research method. A series of choreographies entitled [Actions] are ‘open productions,’ requesting the viewer’s participation and inviting them to create their own story through promps received through the physical actions and structure of the choreography.

Based on a 19th century novel by the famous Greek novelist G. Viziinos, the performance tells the story of a Turk who, seeking his father’s approval, goes so far as to even change his national and religious identity. “SKIN” is a hybrid performance, inspired by T. Hobbe’s “Leviathan,” with minimal use of text and through the contribution of performers, musicians, and visual artists. It functions as a poetic metaphor for the present condition of a Greek society in crisis and the uprising of a super-empowered state-Leviathan - a conservative doctrine of banks against human rights and free thinking. “SKIN” is a ‘tribute’ to mechanical work, to apathy and resistance. OΔC Ensemble is committed to creating engaged out-of-the-box Art, with the involvement of local communities as an essential within its artistic work. l’histoire d’un Turc qui va jusqu’a changer d’identité nationale et religieuse pour plaire a son père. Sa vie n’est faite que d’une longue suite de traversées de frontières dans un Orient déchiré par la guerre, fuyant ou se rapprochant des personnalités autoritaires de sa famille, de l’armée et de la société. Five young performers travelled all over Greece for 13 months, interviewing senior citizens and asking them to remember the single, significant story that changed their lives. Out of the 85 recorded interviews, they picked those that relate to historical events, translating to stage these true episodes that happened during immigration to the USA, Germany, Australia and Canada, during World War II, the German invasion, the Civil War, the building of the Berlin Wall, the Military Coup in 1967, the elections of 1981 and the rise of the socialist party of Andreas Papandreou and the Athens Olympic Games in 2004. The final play is a mosaic of unwritten short stories of everyday life, which sometimes looses its way, but insists on the quest of happiness, shedding light on what lays under officially recorded History.

In “Spectacle”, Vasistas deal with learning mechanisms in everyday life. Through exploring different spaces, they create a plastic, human

and mobile installation: an illogic circuit of action where people try to train and educate others. On stage they create a network inspired by an electric circuit, an Internet network and a virtual game. This invisible circuit has its own rules, stops, obstacles, crossings, accidents, obligations and repetitions… The dramaturgy is based on scientific experiments, symbols, images, reality functioning, texts and works of the 20th century’s thinkers. Based in Athens, Vasistas create theatre performances that encounter contemporary life, through the use of non-text based or non-narrative dramaturgies. Through work on “Spectacle”, Vasistas has received the honorary distinction of the National Association of Critics of theatre and music for an innovative theatre play.

The young directors Anestis Azas and Prodromos Tsinikoris, who live and work between Athens and Berlin, have worked together since 2011. Influenced by their experience as assistants to the German group Rimini Protokoll, they started to develop documentary theatre performances related to the ongoing Greek crisis. The team will be presenting videos and recreated elements of previews performances: “Travelling by train”, a play about the collapse of the Greek public railway (Athens 2011); Epidaurus – “a critic retrospective view of the Epidaurus Festival” (documentary); “Telemachus - Should I stay or should I go?” (Berlin/Athens 2013), an on stage confrontation between two generations of Greek immigrants in Germany (“Gastarbeiter” of the 60s and young people who leave Greece today because of the financial crisis).

Il s’agit d’une métaphore poétique de la société grecque actuelle frappée de plein fouet par la crise et de l’émergence d’un état Léviathan tout puissant – où les banques adoptent une doctrine conservative contre les droits de l’homme et la liberté de penser. « PEAU» est un « hommage » au travail mécanique, a l’indifférence et a la résistance. She presents the murder of Alexandros Grigoropoulos and the street protests in relation to Tzirtzilaki’s performance “Right of Wrong”, the Golden Dawn’s attack at Hitirio Theatre in the opening of Terrence McNally’s “Corpus Christi” in relation to Tzirtzilaki’s performance “Elle”, and so on. Eugenia Tzirtzilaki studied Journalism, Photography and Acting in Athens and Stage Directing (MFA) at Brooklyn College (NY). The starting point of “Tomorrow in a cup” is the ritual of ‘coffee reading’. In the grounds of Greek coffee at the bottom of a cup, three performers search for pieces of the future: interpreting symbols for the future and retrieving memories and experiences from the past. Their clairvoyant readings are expressed through movement and text. The choreographer and dancer Zoi Dimitriou has studied at the Greek State School of Dance, Trisha Brown (NY) and Trinity Laban (UK). The work of her company has been featured in internationally renowned venues and festivals and has brought the choreographer major UK choreography awards. Trois jeunes acteurs fondent la troupe de théâtre blitz en Octobre 2004 : Aggeliki Papoulia, Giorgos Valais et Christos Passalis. Évoluant dans le monde du théâtre postdramatique, ils ont vite été reconnus comme une troupe qui apporte des nouvelles tendances et un nouvel esthétisme a la scène grecque. Les commentaires de Lehmann au sujet du théâtre postdramatique décrivent parfaitement les spectacles de blitz : « présence plutôt que représentation », « processus plutôt que le produit », « plus d’éthique, moins d’esthétique », et enfin, « esthétique contre anesthésique ». La troupe a coopéré avec des institutions telles que le Théâtre national grec, le Festival d’Athènes, Schaubuhne (Berlin), et est actuellement en tournée dans toute l’Europe. By creating a collective platform where artists make ‘visible’ and designate through the medium of their artwork, they demonstrate an alternative and artistic use of the space; a Utopia amidst the present Maltopia. The ironic motto “If I were... I would” is taken from an expression heard every day in Greek coffee-shops: “If I were prime minister... I would do that”. The artists involved create interlocking events that connect the history of the site to its imminent destruction in favour of a corporate entertainment industry.

Description:

Euripides Laskaridis and his company OSMOSIS walk us around central Athens where we encounter small, unexpected scenes from their work as an introduction to their style. Euripides, transformed into one of his extravagant and ridiculous personas, becomes our tour guide. Taking a historic park, an ancient hairpin stadium, and traditional Greek ‘Evzones’ guards as backdrops for these pop-up re-enactments of their work, the company explores ‘transformation’ as a performance tool. The walk ends in the infamous Zappion Gardens, where children play during the day and gays cruise for sex through the night - another echo of the ridicule in our everyday urban lives. Euripides Laskaridis studied acting in Greece and Directing (MFA) in Brooklyn College, NY. His work has been presented in theatres and international festivals in Greece and the USA.

Asipka invites us on a walk through the city, wondering “is there mythology in a new city?” Asipka Theatre Group was founded in 2007 by director Dimitris Bitos and actress Irini Drakou, who wanted to develop a new language in performance, a space between representation and presence. Since 2007, the company has created more than 10 productions, presenting them in various theatre institutions and spaces in Greece. Among others, the company has been invited to create new work for the National Theatre of Greece (Stoes – 2011) and for the Athens & Epidaurus Festival in the Small Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus (Antigone by Sophocles - 2012). Le point de départ de « Demain dans une tasse » est le rituel matinal du « café/journal ». Au fond d’une tasse, dans du marc de café grec, trois danseurs tentent de décoder l’avenir ; interprétant les symboles de l’avenir et ravivant leurs souvenirs et expériences du passé.Leurs lectures clairvoyantes s’expriment a la fois par des mouvements et par des textes. La chorégraphe et danseuse Zoi Dimitriou a étudié a l’École de danse publique grecque, a Trisha Brown (NY) et Trinity Laban (Royaume-Uni). Les spectacles de sa compagnie ont été présentés dans des lieux de renommée internationale ainsi que dans des festivals, et ont permis a la chorégraphe de remporter des grands prix pour ses chorégraphies. Nous – les artistes (arts visuels, théâtre, musique) – protestons haut et fort contre l’entreprise publique qui met en vente l’ancien aéroport d’Hellinikon, qui recouvre un immense terrain, et avons décidé d’investir un des bâtiments désertés du site. Notre but est de montrer que ce lieu possède le potentiel pour devenir un espace dédié a l’art. Par la création de cette plate-forme collective où les artistes rendent leur cause visible et la revendiquent via leur art, ils prouvent qu’une alternative artistique est possible pour ce site ; une Utopia au beau milieu de l’actuelle Maltopia. Leur devise plutôt ironique « Si j’étais… je ferais » sort tout droit des cafés grecs où l’on entend quotidiennement les habitués déclarer : « Si j’étais Premier ministre… je ferais ci ou ça ».

Les artistes mobilisés créent un enchaînement de spectacles qui relie l’histoire de ce site a sa destruction imminente au profit de l’industrie du divertissement.

Euripides Laskaridis et sa compagnie OSMOSIS nous embarquent pour une ballade dans le centre d’Athènes où nous découvrirons des petites scènes inattendues extraites de leurs spectacles et qui nous permettront de nous familiariser avec leur style. Euripides, transformé en un personnage extravagant et ridicule, devient notre guide touristique. Utilisant un parc historique, un ancien stade a virages en épingle ou des « Evzones» (fantassins traditionnels grecs) comme toile de fond pour ses scénettes momentanées, la compagnie s’intéresse a la « transformation » comme instrument du spectacle. La promenade s’achève dans le tristement célèbre jardin Zappion, où les enfants s’amusent le jour et où les homosexuels cherchent des faveurs sexuelles la nuit – un miroir, comme il en existe bien d’autres, du grotesque de notre quotidien de citadins. Euripides Laskaridis a étudié la comédie en Grèce et la mise en scène (MFA) A l’Université de Brooklyn, NY. Texts of ancient Greek tragedy, poetry and philosophy, meaning texts that incur History, will be used as bodies for a language that carries messages from the past, conversing with the present and the future. The message of the actor-messenger is redefined through an open dialogue with the history of Greek language by way of a theatrical symposium. Theatro Domatiou was founded in 1993 by Antzela Brouskou (actress – director) and Parthenopi Bouzouri (actress). Elle était l’une des principales danseuses dans les chorégraphies de Dimitris Papaioannou lors des cérémonies d’ouverture et de clôture des Jeux olympiques d’Athènes de 2004. The term serves as pretext for a performance that attempts to raise reasonable questions about the quality of our democracies and the maturity of European Union addressing them in a playful and humorous manner, to investigate the current financial, political and social crisis, to debate the stereotypes of the past and to reflect on our vision for the future. Technopolis City of Athens has become a hub of cultural events within one of the city’s most important industrial monuments, thus upgrading a historic area of the capital and creating another focal point in the cultural identity of Athens.  Every year, a wide variety of cultural events are held in Technopolis: music, dance, theatre and performing arts, plastic and applied arts, educational programmes for children, temporary exhibitions, as well as initiatives for the development of entrepreneurship and the promotion of innovation, attracting over 600.000 visitors annually.  The charm of another era transpired by the imposing gasholders, the chimneys and the old retorts adds a special quality to every event or activity that takes place in it. The Athens Gasworks was founded in 1857 with the purpose of providing gas lighting to the streets of Athens and covering the energy needs of its residents.  The Gasworks became a municipal enterprise in 1938 and it remained as such till 1984 when it was shut down.  Today it is the only surviving gasworks plant in Greece and one of the few in Europe. It constitutes a distinctive sample of 19th century technology and industrial architecture.

Plus de 600 000 personnes s’y rendent chaque année pour assister à une grande variété d’évènements culturels : musique, danse, théâtre et arts du spectacle, arts plastiques et arts appliqués, programmes pédagogiques pour enfants, entreprenariat et expositions temporaires. Le charme d’une autre époque évoqué par d’imposants réservoirs à gaz, des cheminées et de vieilles cornues ajoute une touche particulière à chaque événement ou activité qui se déroule ici.L’usine a gaz Athènes a été fondée en 1857 avec pour but de fournir l’éclairage au gaz dans les rues d’Athènes et de couvrir les besoins énergétiques de ses habitants. En 1938, cette usine à gaz est devenue une entreprise municipale et est resté en activité jusqu’en 1984. Aujourd’hui, cette usine à gaz, symbole de la technologie du 19ème siècle et de l’architecture industrielle, est la seule survivante en Grèce et l’une des rares en Europe.

Public TransportAthens has one of the most efficient public transport networks in Europe. It includes the metro, buses, the over ground, trolleys and trams. Tickets cost 1.40 EUR and can be used during 1h30 for all public transport. After validating your ticket you can use it for the next ninety minutes and for more than one time.Almost all IETM venues, proposed hotels and restaurants are within the city centre and very close to a metro station. Therefore, we highly recommend to use the metro for your transport, as it is the fastest and more comfortable way to move around. Metro service runs from 6:00 to 24:00 Sundays to Thursdays and from 6:00 to 2:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.

TaxisTaxis are relatively cheap in Athens. All IETM Athens venues, proposed hotels and restaurants are located within the city centre. So if you choose to move by taxi, it will cost you the minimum fare, which is 3.20 EUR. After midnight and until 5:30 taxis have a double tariff.

WaterTap water is free and drinkable in Athens, so keep your bottle and refill!
