Join us next week – 1 DECEMBER 2010 – Tourism and What’s in It for YOU! 12 noon ET (5 GMT) @ http://todaysmeet.com/IFD10Chat HOW DID WE DO ON LAST WEEK’S GOALS? I'm finally moving forward with revisions to my website, but have remained unproductive with my blog shame, shame I've just started my blog/first iteration of my website. Lots of work...stressed! Continuing to submit proposals & take on new projects. I've gotten a lot of writing done, have done less well with my contacting prospects program, but will keep at that. Gross up 50 per cent over 2009 with 2 months of billing to go. Yay!!! WE STARTED WITH Q1: WE'VE TALKED ABOUT BUZZ PIECES BEFORE, BUT HOW IS EVERYONE DOING? ANY TO SHARE? I wasn't part of the discussion on buzz pieces. Define buzz pieces, briefly. Plz Buzz pieces can be white papers, ebooks, any type of free information that you provide that helps establish your credibility/expertise That's a great ideabuzz piece. Didn’t think I had the expertise to write an ebook. I suppose a lot of the writing I do falls into the "buzz piece" category. I have free articles on my website, and write a newsletter. I try to get new articles up on my website about every other week. Have not done any yet, but plan to launch an international market update and trends piece for the travel industry no one here is doing this THEN TOOK OFF ON OUR FIRST TANGENT COLLABORATION IDEAS collaborating great idea. Only prob. is coordinating busy schedules :) we use an online collaboration tool plus email, phone, and regular meetings the meetings are a must George, which collaboration tool do you like? We're road testing OpenAtrium and Cyn.in. Cyn.in was a major challenge to install it's either $6500 / year or a free DIY version. OA is free. So far working on my own, and have no collaboration tools, but to learn more about them and use them too. I'm on my own as well, although I do partner with various other folks depending upon the project Here you go: http://tinyurl.com/2bpvy9k lets you compare various CMS / collab tools We do a lot on iChat We embedded our group's private chat room into the collab tool linked it yesterday to our voicemailtoemail system get alerts in chat when someone phones & leaves a ms If you're going to collaborate start small, keep it simple, and work on developing mutual trust. What you've set up here for us is a good starting point.

IFD10Chat  Recap  –  24  November  2010  Topic:  Doesn’t  really  matter  –  we  never  actually  got  there!    Join  us  next  week  –  1  DECEMBER  2010  –  Tourism  and  What’s  in  It  for  YOU!  12  noon  ET  (-‐5  GMT)  @  http://todaysmeet.com/IFD10Chat    HOW  DID  WE  DO  ON  LAST  WEEK’S  GOALS?

• I'm  finally  moving  forward  with  revisions  to  my  website,  but  have  remained  unproductive  with  my  blog  -‐  shame,  shame

• I've  just  started  my  blog/first  iteration  of  my  website.  Lots  of  work...stressed!  • Continuing  to  submit  proposals  &  take  on  new  projects.  • I've  gotten  a  lot  of  writing  done,  have  done  less  well  with  my  contacting  prospects

program,  but  will  keep  at  that.  • Gross  up  50  per  cent  over  2009  -‐  with  2  months  of  billing  to  go.  Yay!!!

WE  STARTED  WITH  Q1:  WE'VE  TALKED  ABOUT  BUZZ  PIECES  BEFORE,  BUT  HOW  IS  EVERYONE  DOING?  ANY  TO  SHARE?

• I  wasn't  part  of  the  discussion  on  buzz  pieces.  Define  buzz  pieces,  briefly.  Plz  • Buzz  pieces  can  be  white  papers,  e-‐books,  any  type  of  free  information  that  you  provide

that  helps  establish  your  credibility/expertise  • That's  a  great  idea-‐buzz  piece.  Didn’t  think  I  had  the  expertise  to  write  an  ebook.  • I  suppose  a  lot  of  the  writing  I  do  falls  into  the  "buzz  piece"  category.  I  have  free  articles

on  my  website,  and  write  a  newsletter.  • I  try  to  get  new  articles  up  on  my  website  about  every  other  week.  • Have  not  done  any  yet,  but  plan  to  launch  an  international  market  update  and  trends

piece  for  the  travel  industry  -‐  no  one  here  is  doing  this    THEN  TOOK  OFF  ON  OUR  FIRST  TANGENT  -‐  COLLABORATION  IDEAS

• collaborating  great  idea.  Only  prob.  is  coordinating  busy  schedules  :)  • we  use  an  online  collaboration  tool  -‐  plus  email,  phone,  and  regular  meetings  -‐  the

meetings  are  a  must  • George,  which  collaboration  tool  do  you  like?  • We're  road  testing  OpenAtrium  and  Cyn.in.  Cyn.in  was  a  major  challenge  to  install  -‐  it's

either  $6500  /  year  or  a  free  DIY  version.  OA  is  free.  • So  far  working  on  my  own,  and  have  no  collaboration  tools,  but          to  learn  more  about

them  and  use  them  too.  • I'm  on  my  own  as  well,  although  I  do  partner  with  various  other  folks  depending  upon

the  project  • Here  you  go:  http://tinyurl.com/2bpvy9k  -‐  lets  you  compare  various  CMS  /  collab  tools  • We  do  a  lot  on  iChat  • We  embedded  our  group's  private  chat  room  into  the  collab  tool  -‐  linked  it  yesterday  to

our  voice-‐mail-‐to-‐email  system  -‐  get  alerts  in  chat  when  someone  phones  &  leaves  a  ms  • If  you're  going  to  collaborate  -‐  start  small,  keep  it  simple,  and  work  on  developing

mutual  trust.  • What  you've  set  up  here  for  us  is  a  good  starting  point.

Page 2: IFD10 Chat 24 Nov

• Sage  advice,  George.  Takes  time  to  find  the  right  fit.  • Any  particular  method  you  all  use  to  seek  out  partners  to  collab  with?  • I'm  looking  for  an  on-‐line  tool  enabling  both  clients  &  me  to  securely  store  and  edit  docs

-‐  don't  need  anything  2  fancy  • OpenAtrium  is  free,  relatively  easy  to  set  up  &  use.  It's  not  perfect,  but  it's  good  enough.  • any  opinion  about  Box.net?  • The  most  widely  tool  I  use  is  Skype  :)  I  do  all  my  conference  calls  and  chat  with  people

out  of  state  and  out  of  the  country.  • What's  box.net?  • Box.net  is  just  one  of  a  slew  of  collaboration  sites.  They  all  have  their  pros/cons  -‐  just

depends  upon  what  your  greatest  need  is  • I  also  use  a  project  mgt.  software  program  (not  free  though)  through  an  agency  I  work

with  -‐  Zoho.  A  lot  to  it.  • Plus  with  3  of  us  FT  on  the  team  -‐  art,  vid/biz,  tech  -‐  we  each  keep  up  to  date  on  our

areas  of  expertise  and  then  share  internally  • Box.net  &  others  are  more  for  document  storage  and  editing  by  multiple  parties  -‐

doesn't  replace  Skype

SOON  WE  ADDED  IN  A  CONVERSATION  ABOUT  TWITTER:  • Twitter  apps:  TweetDeck  -‐  I  have  LOTS  of  columns  • I  find  Tweetdeck  overwhelming  • I  use  TweetDeck  as  well  and  scan  the  timeline  from  my  various  lists  throughout  the  day  -‐

but  it's  so  addicting.  I  could  spend  all  day  there  • How  do  you  manage  multiple  languages  on  Twitter  ..work  in  english  and  french..which

tools  are  best  for  managing  this?  • Twitter  in  general  is  99  per  cent  noise  and  1  per  cent  signal  • I  use  an  automated  management  system  for  my  social  media  called  Postling.  It's  free

and  fairly  new,  and  I  like  it.  • Try  creating  a  list  of  some  key  folks  in  your  field  and  just  have  that  running  alongside

your  All  Friends  column.  • George,  I  agree  about  the  noise  on  Twitter,  but  there  are  enough  nuggets  to  be  mined

(at  least  in  my  field)  that  it's  worth  the  effort  • Twitter  is  worth  the  effort  if  you  know  how  to  market  effectively  on  there.  • I  get  bits  from  it,  too,  but  most  of  my  keeping  up  is  done  in  walled  gardens  -‐  sites  where

pros  hang  out,  pro  mailing  lists,  etc.  • My  views  on  Etsy  have  increased  since  sharing  on  Twitter.  • It  really  depends  on  your  industry  &  niche.  There  are  lots  of  tricks  to  Twitter.  • Be  very  specific  w/  your  target  market  &  don't  follow  just  anyone.  • Follow  the  movers  and  shakers  in  your  industry.  • agree  re  Twitter  /  industry  niche.  It's  good  at  fast-‐breaking  info,  not  so  good  at  deep

thoughts.  • agree  with  that.  I  don't  follow  everyone  who  follows  me  –  • Twitter  is  great  for  me;  I've  made  contacts  w/  lots  of  legal  professionals.  I  find  articles  of

use  to  me,  and  establish  my  expertise  there  • takes  a  while  to  discern  who  exactly  movers  and  shakers  really  are  lol

Page 3: IFD10 Chat 24 Nov

• depends  on  your  field.  There  are  great  search  functions.  You  can  search  via  keywords  on  Twitter.

•  There's  generally  a  lot  more  just  shaking  than  actually  moving...  • One  tip  about  your  competition  -‐  look  at  who  they've  recently  started  following  -‐  there

might  be  some  potential  work  out  there  to  compete  for  • You  would  be  surprised.  I  just  got  direct  replies  about  an  interview  series  I  ran  on  my

blog  and  it  was  only  up  for  one  day.  • Twitter  is  a  micro-‐blogging  platform.  It  is  not  like  the  heavy  hitters  like  LinkedIn    • Have  found  sources  of  timely  and  new  trends  on  Twitter  -‐  although  mostly  US/canada

related  but  can  adapt  to  local  situation.  • It's  about  disseminating  info.  fast  but  it  can  be  effective  -‐  like  anything  with  social

media.  You  have  to  put  some  time  in  to  make  it  work.  • trends  from  that  'trending'  list,  Kate  or  elsewhere?  •  it's  a  great  place  to  find  the  latest  trends  and  news  -‐  agreed.  • Twitter  is  good  old  simple  text  messaging.  First  time  I  tried  it  I  was  'Hey,  this  is  just  like

the  old  AOL  IM  days'  • I'm  an  information  junkie  and  follow  great  folks  on  Twitter,  I  could  be  on  it  all  day

absorbing  more  and  more  • Twitter  exposure  is  great  &  finding  your  industry  niche  is  even  better.  • searched  for  travel,  then  environment  on  twitter  and  went  from  there.

 ANOTHER  THREAD  EMERGED  ABOUT  LINKEDIN:

• LinkedIn  is  where  I've  have  found  the  majority  of  my  clients  and  how  I  found  the  agency  I  partner  with.

• you  need  to  join  groups  where  you  can  share  your  expertise  and  don't  just  join  your  industry  groups  -‐  cross  over  to  other  groups

• I  am  having  trouble  getting  mileage  out  of  LinkedIn  so  far,  but  I'm  trying  to  spend  more  time  there.

• How  can  one  get  best  out  of  LinkedIn  -‐  without  having  to  subscribe  huge  amts  • Participate  in  groups  •  Still  getting  the  hang  of  LinkedIn  -‐  it's  kind  of  intimidating  (could  be  because  I  belong  to

a  gazillion  groups!)  • I've  heard  that  from  several  people  re:  referrals  and  Linkedin  • LinkedIn  been  on  our  radar  for  years.  But  our  clients  mainly  come  from  personal

connections  and  referrals  • Had  someone  contact  me  for  advice  after  seeing  me  on  LinkedIn  -‐  no  projects  yet  • it's  not  as  scary  as  it  looks.  • George,  you  may  want  to  give  it  a  try.  There  are  some  very  well-‐connected  people  on

there  that  might  benefit  your  industry  and  work.  • Just  started  on  LinkedIn  and  joined  one  group  -‐  need  to  find  some  marketing  and

tourism  groups.  • I  have  a  goal  to  develop  my  LinkedIn  company  page.  That's  a  goal  for  this  week.  •  Haven't  tried  LinkedIn  yet.  What  is  the  best  value?  • And  don't  be  afraid  to  ask  a  happy  client  if  s/he  will  refer  you  to  their  contacts.  • I've  been  on  LI  for  several  years.  It  started  when  I  was  doing  contract  work  for  a

computer  game  company.  They  required  it.  •  if  you  are  a  biz  professional  you  should  be  dialed  into  LinkedIn  • LI  here  I  come!  • every  professional  needs  have  a  presence  on  LI

WRAPPED  IT  ALL  UP  WITH  -‐  WHAT  PERCENTAGE  OF  TIME  DO  PEOPLE  ALLOT  FOR  SOCIAL  MEDIA  VERSUS  GETTING  WORK  DONE?  2  HOURS/DAY?

• you  don't  need  to  spend  that  much  time  if  you  don't  have.  I  tell  my  clients  start  small  but  build  into  your  calendar  and  set  up  an  editorial  calendar  with  posts,  etc.  You  need  to  spend  some  time  -‐  even  if  only  10  mins  per  day

•  good  question.  Depends  on  work  load  and  deadlines  (and  desire  to  procrastinate  but  feel  like  I'm  doing  something  productive)
