Dear friends,I thank all of you for the success of the FD Classduring 2005 and 2006.In 2005, the number of IFDCO members andboats competing in theWorld Championship inHungary confirm and show the continued interestin the FD and our Class activity.Congratulation to the Spartacus Sailing Club forthe organization of the World Championship. Moreover, the good number of teams attendingthe Euro Cup events and the World Cup showthat the strategy to link specific races scheduledin different countries seems to kindle the inte-rest of the sailors to increase their participationin the races abroad and to be involved in the Classlife. Many thanks to all the clubs organizing the FDraces every year, since they help our Class to sup-port and continue organizing classical events,a tra-dition in the annual FD fixtures. With regard to the women FD teams,Peggy Bahr,ex Olympic 470 sailor from Germany, started tosail FD with her husband Torsten as crew.Peggy had a very good result in the Worlds inHungary and won the FDLadies’ Cup 2005: con-gratulations and best wishes for her future sai-ling activity in FD!!With regard to the technical matters, 2005 alsorepresents the beginning of a new age, since isthe first year in which the adoption of carbonmasts is allowed. The number of carbon riggings immediately adop-ted by the teams from every country and especi-ally the number of carbonmasts measured duringthe World Championship (about 30 %) show agood interest of the sailors for this new step in thetechnical development of the FD.Moreover, during this first year some carbon pro-files manufacturers from different countries inthe world (UK,Australia, Italia, etc.) started toproduce carbon riggings (mast, boom and spin-naker pole) with different profiles, stiffness and

fitting. They are competing since the beginning to deve-lop, test and evolve their profiles and reach thebest quality and performance. This competition among the manufacturers willallow the carbon riggings to have a speedy evo-lution; moreover, it increases the interest of theteams to compare different technical solutions: Ithink this first step will be faster than we expec-ted andwill project our Class speedily into the fu-ture.Also in 2005, another very important news itemin our Class life was the beginning of a Sponsor-shipAgreement between IFDCOandHARKENSAILING WEAR: during this first three yearssponsorship contract,HARKENSAILINGWE-AR will supply our Class with several clothes oftheir sportswear collections. After the fall-win-ter collection 2005-2006, HARKEN SailingWe-ar will produce several models inspired by theFD’s history and emotion. Those clothes, repor-ting both the HARKEN and the IFDCO Logos, will be available for each FDClass member witha special discount. In detail, the Crew Collectionwill always be available with several clothes (jac-kets, polo’s, gilets, t-shirts etc.) in several coloursand sizes;moreover, every yearHARKENwill de-velop and produce a fall-winter and spring-sum-mer collection, in which some articles will beselected showing the IFDCO Logo.Since this year it will be possible to check theHARKEN Sportswear Collections with the FDLogo on the IFDCOwebsite;moreover there willbe a link between the IFDCOand theHARKENwebsite.Together with the a lot of enthusiastic sailors whogranted the worldwide success of the FD Class,HARKEN will be inspired by the most distin-guished feature of the FDClass: to be in the racefor high-tech and innovative solutions. For thesame reason IFDCO chose HARKEN SailingWear as brand to produce the sportswear for theFD teams.IFDCO, selling the sportswear to the Class mem-bers,will collect money to spend for Class promo-tion, advertisement and activities; for instance, itwill be very important to help the young and newFD sailors, increasing their participation in spe-cific events and supporting the transport of boatsattending the World Championships overseas. For 2006, the first result of that strategy has beenpossible, when every container shipped to USAto attend theWorlds in St Petersburg had a grantof 900 e .That represents just the first step of theIFDCO activities to support our teams; anyway, that process requires time and the cooperation ofClass members,National Secretaries, etc. to show

and improve the advantages for the sailors. Also, 2006 represented a year of further succes-ses: more events and more sailors participating. The sailing season started with theWorld Cham-pionship in St Petersburg (USA) where 35 boatscoming from 11 countries attended the event. Itwas the second time we were guests of the St Pe-tersburgYachting Club, since we already sailed aWorld Championship there in 1997.Anyway, gre-at club, kind hospitality, perfect organization, be-autiful weather: a fully successful event !!My bestcongratulations and thanks to the club and theOr-ganizing Committee. The sailing activity went on,showing an increasing number of sailors atten-ding the classical races, and particularly the Eu-ro Cup events (122 teams, from 14 countries onthe Euro Ranking List). The Dawes Cup (WorldRanking List) for 2006 will be awarded in Spainat theWorld Championship. In July, the European Championship organizedinAustria by theNeusiedl Sailing Club had a gre-at participation of 63 teams from 13 countries. Inspite of the wind that was always very light theclub and the Race Committee have been able tocomplete 5 races.Again kind hospitality and good organization:many thanks to all the people engaged in such asuccessful event.During 2006, the success of the carbon riggingincreased and about 40% of the fleet adoptedthe carbon profiles. That choice confirms, as I saidin 2005, that the carbon improvement and theirincreasing number in the Class is faster than weexpected and will project our Class speedily in-to the future. The season 2006 finished with the "Conrad Gul-cher Trophy", a classical event for the FD Class,as always very well organized by the LoosdrechtSailing Club;moreover, the ConradGulcher 2006was a great chance to celebrate Clé Jeltes for hisengagement and passion dedicated to the FD andIFDCO development, since the launch of FD in1952.A party was organized and it was an excel-lent chance to thank Clé for his role in the histo-ry of the FD Class: he has been engaged forseveral years both as International and OlympicMeasurer, IFDCOV.P.Technical and ChiefMea-surer, IFDCO Officer responsible for the archi-ve and the Measurement Certificates issue;moreover, since 30 years Clé was editor of theFDBulletin. Sincemany years,Clé was also IFD-CO Honorary Secretary and now, he is going toleave FDClass activity, attending theAGCMandgiving suggestion and information to all of us.Now the entire job done only by Clé, who dedi-cated all of his days to the FDClass, has been in-herited by some IFDCO Officers.Dear Clé, you have been able to know the FD, theClass, the sailors and to represent IFDCOall overthe world, more than any of us: we thank youvery much and appreciate your engagement. In detail,Zsofia Csanda, already Commodore ofthe Eastern European Countries, started to be-come responsible for the IFDCO archive and toissue the Measurement Certificates, since lastSeptember. With regard to the FD Bulletin, since last De-

cember three youngDutch sailors,Sjors Riemslag,Casper Schaaf and LoukNelissen, have been en-gaged as the team of editors of the next FD Bul-letins.Dear FD sailors, dear IFDCO members, excuseus, if that process has required time and causedsome miscarriage and difficulty: for that reasonwe have missed the FD Bulletin in 2006 and hada stop and delay to issue the Measurement Cer-tificates.Anyway, I ensure you that the IFDCO team ap-proach and the friendship among all theOfficers, the Commodores, the Sub Committees and theNational Secretaries is the best way to continuepromoting, advertising and developing the FDClass on all levels. We are engaged to undersign sponsorships tosupport the Class activities and events, updateand improve the website to advertise and pro-mote the Class and develop boats and rigging toprojecting the FD into the future.I believe that those new aspects of Class life arebecomingmore andmore important to optimizenumber of sailors, new generation teams, events, etc.Let's commit ourselves all together in order tosupport and quicken that process!!Finally, let me express my personal feelings andsadness for the deaths of Ann and John Truettwhich happened last year in a few months.Theysailed together in FD for several years and dedi-cated a lot of time and energy to the IFDCO.With their ideas, suggestions and commitmentthey supportedClass life and activity formany ye-ars;moreover, when I knew them more than tenyears ago they helped me with their experienceand suggestions to learn what it means to mana-ge our Class. So, I started to become engaged as Commodoreand then as IFDCO President, with Ann as Ge-neral Secretary; moreover, I cherished them asgood friends!!Personally and on behalf of IFDCO I express ourfeelings to their sonsAllistair and Jonathan and, rememberingAnn and John, I go on to love ourClass.

News from the editors !

Dear FD sailors,

Finally the big moment is there: you are holdinga brand new issue of the FDBulletin! It has beena bit of a struggle to get things together, but af-ter all the editorial team is happy with what itcan present you with, fellow FD sailors!

We are proud to be able to continue the magni-ficant work of “TheGodfather of FD–sailing”CléJeltes, the driving force of the Bulletin for somany, many years.

After a period of finding our way in all the diffi-culties of editing a magazine of the FD class, weunderstood how important Clé Jeltes has beenfor our class, how numerous the contacts he hadand howmuch time he spent on our beloved class.

We will do our very best to continue the Bulle-tin in the spirit of Clé, and that’s why we did notmake significant changes in the layout and formatof the Bulletin.

However, if there are suggestions, comments orideas in that matter, do not hesitate to contactus, of course we will always welcome your inputand feedback. Please contact us at [email protected].

We would like to express our warm thanks to allthe people who helped us realise our first issue. To mention a few:Clé Jeltes,Alberto Barrenghi,Fred Schaaf, and the publisher, Sportservice-Noordholland BV,who was willing to assist us inmany ways.We also are grateful to all of youwho gave a quickresponse to our e-mails, allowing us with some-thing to actually publish! To all of you manythanks!

We really do hope you will enjoy the Bulletin aswe all did in the past, and for the coming seasonwe wish you happy sailing !!!!!

Fellow sailors!

A lot has been written about our beautiful boat, but this article which appeared in a book by yachtdesigner and sailing connoisseur Jaap Kramer isdefinitely worth a glance. In 1963 Jaap Kramerspoke to FD-inventor ConradGülcher and publis-hed this in his book Watersport (1964), one ofthe canonical works in Dutch sailing history. The same publisher, Uitgeverij Hollandia, alsopublished the book written by our well-knownfellow FD-man Paul de Schipper: The FlyingDutchman, the story of a wonder boat (2001), awork no sailing library can do without!

The Flying Dutchman blasts around the world

Promotor CoenGülcher tells JanKramer how theFD came into birth and has gained ever morespeed along the way.

The 1951EuropeanChampionships in Loosdrechtshowed that the newly designedTornado has notbeen a success. After this I asked engineer Loeff:“Can’t we design a new hull under the same sai-ling plan?”This wasn’t so easy, because the Tor-nado had just been accepted as new internationalclass.Eventually engineer Loeff said:“Very well,it’s now half way in August. The InternationalYacht Racing Union meeting starts at Novem-ber 1st. If you, before that date, manage to crea-te a design, test it and prove that it’s a fine shipfaster than the Tornado I’m willing to supportthe new design at the meeting.”

“This was no small feat!”No,but wewent to it right away and created a pre-liminary design first. This was done by the begin-ning of September. We sent this to the thirty besthelmsmen I knew – not designers, because theywon’t give up their secrets anyway – with the re-quest to give it their comments.Within fourteendays seventeen replies came in.These included so-me rather valuable ones, especially from Eng-land, that showed us mistakes we had made and

gave us some ideas that hadn’t been invented yet.“Who made that preliminary design?”Uus van Essen, then working as measurer in ser-vice of the DutchYacht Federation. The missionI’d set myself was this: find the boats that run thefastest and find out why they do this. So we justwent past all the boat types inmagazines and racereports. Some boats appeared to be extremelyfast. Besides this we also wondered: “What re-sults do boats of the same size achieve?”You canfind this out by studying the times they clocked.

“So this involved quite some research?”Yes, a lot of research went into this.Actually, al-ready stemming from the time people were tal-king about the Tornado. Ever since then I’ddecided to study this, all the time asking myself:“What are the variables you have to choose?”When theTornado emerged I was already in thefinal stages of my work and only needed somefinishing touches.

“How did this evolve itself?”Using the received advices and criticism we cre-ated a new design in a week, whereupon we ma-naged to make a mould and a hull in less thanone.

“That was done in moulded ply-wood?”Yes,Van de Brink in Stompwijk made it.He waswell acquainted with jobs like this.

“Thematerials used were both light and strong, al-lowing for relative freedom on the part of the de-signer.”Exactly.A light weight was one of themain pointsin the design. All this, by the way, was done un-der supervision of engineer Loeff.

“You had a very valuable combination there: ayoung, progressive designer, tips on the latest tech-niques from all over the world and a relative con-servative expert like engineer Loeff to provide allthis with his critical view. Sounds ideal.”Yes, because at first we were thinking along the

lines of, for example, a ‘Scow’.Next to catamaransscows are the fastest boats around. EngineerLoeff, however, didn’t like this idea at all.

“He wanted a real ship?”A real ship that was fast at the same time. That’swhy the new design received the stern of a scowand a normal front.

“And when were you able to sail it?”Well, in a week we had created the hull, inserteda centreboard case and fitted it withTornado rig-ging. The whole thing eventually sailed on No-vember 1st.

“So you created a new hull to put under the Tor-nado rig?”This had absolutely been the starting idea, butgradually we altered the Tornado rigging piece

Clé Jeltes’ farewell diner

In all probability Clé is still the most well-knownpersonality in the FD class. From its beginning in1952 he’s been closely involved with the class’ na-tional and international organisation.DuringmanyWC’s and EC’s he has been a place of rest in themeasurement process. If conflict arose betweensailors andmeasurers, the Olympic days included, his judgement was accepted by everyone. The FDfilled a large part of his existence and this madehim the only real FD professional. For many years he was a NFDO committee mem-ber and up until this moment he’s been in the IFD-CO as well. During the last couple of years someof the tasks started to become a physical burdenfor him: the reason why he transferred some tasksto other IFDCOmembers during the last season. This was to be formally arranged this summer atthe EC in Neusiedl. Although the transfer tookplace, a dignified international farewell to Clé ne-ver happened.Of course preparations for this hadbeen made, but Clé had to return home suddenlybecause of his health problems and, therefore, theplanned ceremony couldn’t go through. It was at Neusiedl that new arrangements werealready made to repeat this at a better time. The

place of action was to be Loosdrecht, during theGulcher regatta in October. Once the place ofbirth for the FD,Loosdrecht would be aworthy pla-ce for such an event. It was also arranged that so-me IFDCOmembers would be present there andthat Clé would be given his farewell while enjoyinga joyful diner. For this we were required to takerefuge at “Heineke”, because the FJ class was ce-lebrating her 50th anniversary and accordingly oc-cupied the whole KWVL club house. However, these familiar surroundings for many FD sailorsproved to be a very nice location.A good attendance of Dutch,German,British andSwedish FD sailors, together withAlberto Bareng-hi, John Best and Zsofia Csanda representing theIFDCO, formed the backdrop for this well-spiri-ted meeting.Alberto had arranged a good-looking trophy inItalian style, which was given to Clé after a warmspeech and accompanied by thunderous applau-se.As is usual during such events, you can see Cléthinking on the one hand that all this fuss is a litt-le exaggerated, while on the other hand you canalso see him enjoying himself and probably beinga little proud as well. I hope these last emotions

eventually held sway with him. While Alberto was there, it was a good occasionto present the IFDCO Ladies’ Trophy togetherwith Clé, which accompanied by ample applauseof course succeeded wonderfully.Clé I hope you enjoyed yourself, you deserve it.Onbehalf of all the FD community, thank you.

by piece. The mast and jib got a little higher andthe boom a little shorter. We provided it with abetter spinnaker and a bigger genoa. And a tra-peze!!

“The trapeze was just coming into use at thattime, right?”Well, no one used it yet. As early as 1928 PeterScott sailed a race in Canada using a trapeze.Andwon! It resulted in the immediate prohibition ofthe use of the trapeze. But when we were discus-sing the new boat Peter Scott said:“Give her a tra-peze, that’s powerful stuff!” So that’s how thetrapeze got into the story. It was gradually perfec-ted and came into popularity in other classes aswell.

“How did the FD become a class boat?”We immediately organised a whole series of tri-als. First in Holland, in 1952, because us Dutch-men had come up with the idea.Thirty differentboats coming from eight different nations parti-cipated; every type had one boat representingthem and every nation wanted to send their bestboat, making it a gathering of the best the worldhad to offer. And the FDwon! Upon this she wasdeclared International class for themid-Europe-an countries. But England and France were notsatisfied.

“Why not?”They argued that such a low, straight boat couldn’tsail on the sea. And the French were afraid herbig length would make manoeuvring on riverstoo hard. Because of this they decided to deve-lop a shorter boat themselves. It resulted in the505.

“Does the FD have such bad manoeuvrability?”Of course a boat of six meters is less manoeuvra-ble than one of five. And the 505 was especiallydesigned for quick-tacks. In fact, the Flying Juni-or of four meters can tack even quicker. But theFD has very long-stretched water lines.

“Because the speed is largely dependent on thelength of the water line?”Yes,we were thinking about a remark fromEng-land:“When you go to a certain length, make theboat as fast as possible, because trials are won byspeed!”That’s why we made the front-inclinati-on short and the stern straight and low; all to ma-ke the water line as short as possible.

“Didn’t this affect the FD’s seaworthiness?”Oh no, she proved herself to be quite seaworthy.Dipping into waves is prevented by the broad-ening shape of the frame.

“Wouldn’t a bigger freeboardmake sailing on theopen water easier?”That’s no problem at all; we have the self bailersand the double bottom, so the water that comesin will run out just as easily. To allow for dry sai-ling the board would have to be a lot higher.Thiswouldmake her both heavier and a bigger objectfor the wind; in short, slower.“So, in stead of keeping the water outside yourtrain of thought was:make the water disappear oninstance.Uponwhich one could ask himself:Aren’tthose big holes in the transom an open goal forbig waves?”When waves are big enough to reach her stern, she will necessarily be gliding on them and won’t

be open to water from that side.“But what if you’re lying still for a moment or thewind drops on sea while the waves are still rol-ling?”Well, yes, some water could come into the boatthen. But this is no problem, because the waterwill stay above the double bottom and run outagain in no time.“As a ship builder it is naturally a little offendingto me, a ship into which water can run in and outof at any moment, but from a speed point of viewI do see the huge practical value.”Oh, but the ship isn’t unpleasant for normal sai-ling at all.

“If you are wearing boots, I suppose?”The upper part of your body receives as muchwater as the lower part. Just yesterday I sailed adouble bottom boat; really, you can sit in it witha light wind without getting wet. Only when thewater is bumpy under a light wind a small wavewill enter now and then.At such an occasion, so-me people put a small panel over the transom sothey don’t wet their feet every time.

“And when did the FD show herself to be no Ju-nior on the sea?”That was in 1953, when the French and Englishorganised a trial at La Baule. It was there thatWim van Duyl and Jaap Helder proved that theFD is among the fastest ships, even when sailingthe sea. When in that same year the “lakes” res-triction was lifted, we really became an interna-tional class. In 1957 the I.Y.R.U. decided toappoint the FD as one of the classes for the 1960Olympic Games in Rome. It was the first time aDutch design ever got so far. It gave the sprea-ding of the FDa big boost, because all nations whowanted to participate in theOlympic Games hadto train a specials corps of FD-sailors out of whichthey could choose their Olympic teams. Interna-tional spreading rapidly followed this event.

“And then the class organisation was formed?”No, that was formed right away, because I hadbeen experienced in this from myTornado days.It was a one-man-organisation at first, but we im-mediately started to publish FD-bulletins,bearinginmind the Star and Snipe classes. This way of or-ganising a class was new in Europe at that time,so I had a head start on the others. Nowadaysevery class has its own organisation.“How many FD’s are around at this moment?”About three thousand, but I don’t know the exactnumber. However, far more important than thenumber of boats is the number of nations thatare participating. Which, at this time, is thirty-eight.

“Even though it’s a boat meant for very good sai-lors?”Yes, for the best racing teams actually. A lot ofchampions from other classes tend to change tothe FD after a while. They don’t realise, howe-ver, that in the FD they are surrounded by cham-pions and their results will usually be lower thanin their former classes.

“Domany people leave the FD to venture on sea-sailing?”No, but some people do both. However, luringpeople into different national teams is a very at-tractive business. FD-sailors really have formeda separate clan, including a lot of older guys over

forty.

“And those guys are still in such good shape tokeep this up?”For being a helmsman in the FD you don’t haveto be extremely athletic, you can easily do that un-til you’re sixty. The crew, however, has a heavierjob. He really should be in excellent shape.

“How much time should you spend on training, practise races and so forth?”If you want to be a more-than-average racer theweekends should do.But if you really want to re-ach the top, you have to put in more effort.“But if I understand you correctly the crew hasto be in constant training in order to be in pro-per shape by summer?”Most important is general fitness and for a helms-man also mental fitness. You should be free tofocus on sailing without feeling burdened by allsorts of business problems. People attending adifficult business meeting on Friday night can’t befit at the starting line Saturday morning. The dif-ference is easy to tell.

“Who are the best FD-sailors here in Holland?”Wehave a leading group, regrettably far ahead ofthe others, consisting of BenVerhagen,Ulrich Ja-ger and Jan Schoonevelt.

“Do you think the FDwill be anOlympic class fora long time?”The I.Y.R.U. is known for letting classes partici-pate at least three times; or the whole world hasto constantly change types. This isn’t a definitiverule however.

“Howmanywharves are constructing FD’s inHol-land at this moment?”Three are building them regularly; one workingwith plastic, two with wood.

“Are the winning boats generally constructed bypolyester or ply-wood?”You can’t tell that easily. Most sailors tend to sayply-wood is faster. But only recently a lot of cham-pionships have been won by polyester boats.

“Maybe ply-wood is a little stiffer than polyester?”In popular theory, yes. But that doesn’t answer thequestion whether a stiff boat is faster than a wea-ker boat of course. We like to make the FD asstiff as possible, because the big length and lightconstruction make her weak enough as it is. Butwe don’t really know for sure. In a light breeze po-lyester is probably better or at least comparable;in a strong breeze the others go faster.

“What are your thoughts on the FD’s future?”Every year sees more boats entering competiti-on that the former. Thus more FD’s are flyingaround the world, forming strong wakes in thewaters of all the continents.

The EURO 2006 is to be described completely and briefly in a few words:– light wind , except in the last race– heat each day– warm water in the lake (like a bath)– tropical temperatures each evening in the club restaurant (free sauna)– millions of mosquitos each evening between 21.00 and 23.00 o’clockBut that was not everything. The control measurement was accomplished professionally as usual by Pe-ter, John and the other one. However, the measurement tent was a first testfor the heat compatability of all participants. On the first five days there was a very light wind from different directionsand therefore we had until Friday only four races sailed. These races requi-

red everything from the sailors. Due to the windshifts and calm holes it wasvery heavy to sail (among other things with spinnaker cources directly at thereed edge etc.). Thus, one did not arrive where he wanted.Despite partially adverse conditions the race committee succeeded in ac-complishing relatively fair races. Only in the last hard contested race on Sa-turday were the medal winners determined. The acting World championsalso became the well-deserved European champions, congratulations againSzabolcs and Andras!I also think over 60 participants from 14 nations is a good result for the FDclass. And the weather must be taken like it is. It could also have been con-tinuous rain each day and no wind the whole week.I hope I will see all of you again, at the latest in July in Mar Menor, Spain.

The ACT championships were held in conjunction with the ACT dinghychampionships on Lake Burley Griffin. There was 2 days of tough racingin generally good winds with myriads of boats on quite small courses.

The winners were Ian Ruff and Daryl Roos sailing AUS 371 the new FDbuilt by Stuart Shimeld from the Hazelgrove mould. They showed good

speed and crew work and are expected to improve further. The racing wasclose with all of the 5 boats racing being in the lead on multiple occasions.

There was an enjoyable dinner at the Yacht Club on Saturday night and itis planned that this will be a regular event on the FD calendar

The NSW championships were scheduled for 9-10 December at theSydney Flying Squadron. Unfortunately the north-east seabreeze blew sohard on the 2nd day that races 3 & 4 had to be abandoned for safetyreasons and the championship will be completed later in the season.

However, we welcomed to the fleet new members AUS 327 John Maguireand Noel Whitaker and AUS 320 Matthew Mitchell and Michael Nolan.Hopefully the weather will be kinder to them later in the season.

Michael Chapman is tuning a new carbon mast from Alex Vallings atC.Tech in New Zealand with bend characteristics based on the SupersparMS and fitted out immaculately by Michael himself.

On the social side Chris Haskard from Murray’s Craft Brewing Companyprovided free beer for the weekend introducing a new boutique beerNirvana Pale Ale. This is an excellent drop and is fully recommended bythe experienced drinkers at the regatta.

HARKEN SailingWear recently signed an important sponsorship agree-ment to become Official Supplier of the International Flying DutchmanClass Organization. As of the autumn-winter collection in 2005-2006HARKEN Sailingwear will offer several models inspired by the FD’shistory and emotion.Together with a lot of enthusiastic sailors, who granted the worldwidesuccess of the FD Class, we ‘ll reach theAmerican,Australian and NewZealand coasts, as well as the European Lakes, the Mediterranean and theNorthern European nations. Harken will be inspired by the most remarka-

ble feature of the FD Class: competing in the race for high tech andinnovative solutions. For the same reason IFDCO chose Harken SailingWear as sponsor to supply sportswear for the FD teams. Both parties are aware that research and innovation are invaluable in thesport of dinghy racing.

Having our glances always aimed towards the future, together we’ll beginthis experience.

Obituary – John Truett

John Truett, who was involved with the FD class for almost 40 years diedat the end of December 2005, just a year after his wife Ann, previously FD General Secretary, was tragically killed in a road accident.

John started sailing FD’s in the early 1960’s when the class profile in theUK was raised after Keith Musto and Tony Morgan won the silvermedal at the Tokyo Olympics. John’s FD, K52, Hucklebuck, was crewedatWhitstable in 1965 by schoolboy Ed Leask. By 1969, with “big Ed ” onthe wire, John had got to grips with the boat and won the FD week inNaples with a day in hand. In 1970 John and Ed represented the UK intheAdelaideWorlds and finished 2nd to Rodney Pattisson and IainMcDonald-Smith. John and Ed had the satisfaction of winning theMexican Silver Sombrero for the best result without discard and win-ning race 3 in 40 knots.

John was an innovator in terms of FD layout, gear and tuning and alsowrote articles for YachtingWorld,Trapeze and the IFDCO Bulletin.

In 1972 everything was focussed on the Olympic Trials but in the EasterHyeres regatta, John’s beautifully engineered boat was wrecked by aFrench “rescue” landing craft after a Mistral came through. That endedJohn’s serious FD campaigning, although he continued to sail FD ‘s in amore relaxed way with a string of top twelve placings in FDWorlds,Weeks and Kiel through to 1982.

Not only was John an ace FD sailor, he also supported the FD Classboth internationally and within the UK.He became European Commo-dore in 1971 and served on the Championship Committee from 1983,becoming VP Championships. He was meticulous in checking andimproving the “Notice of Race” and “Sailing Instructions”. StephenParry, the current VP Championships assesses John’s contribution:

“I will always remember him as someone very knowledgeable of the rulesand of the traditions of the FD Class and will be eternally grateful for thelegacy he has left us in how to organise and run a Championship”

John was a member of the British Section Committee and heavilyinvolved in organising the 1974WeymouthWorlds and proved aninvaluable link with the Class hierarchy. Later he became an ISA judge, dropping out of this role in 1997.

Keith Musto, Rodney Pattisson and Ed Leask were among an numberof his sailing friends who attended his funeral atWadhurst, Kent inJanuary.

Obituary – Danila Benedettini

Danila Benedettini, who was FD Italian Class Secretary since 1996 to2004, died very young two months ago.

Unfortunately, due to a serious illness, she had stopped sailing in 2005.The last time she sailed in the Flying Dutchman war during the " FDInternational Easter Criterium" in Varazze in 2005, where she won withher brother Marco. She crewed the FD with her brother Marco since1993 and they sailed at all the National races with excellent results andattended to the FD European Championship in Murcia, in 1997. Danilawas an enthusiast FD sailor and managed the FD Italian Class Secretarywith professional kindness and she made herself popular with every-body.She lived in Genova and was a business consultant by profession.

Since I became Commodore and IFDCO President I had the chance toappreciate Danila for character, engagement and availability to promoteand support the Class life and activities.

Dear Damila, we'll never forget your smile, passion and enthusiasm forthe Flying Dutchman. We are very sad and will miss you very much!!IFDCO sends its condolences to Marco and Danilas family.

Alberto Barenghi

Extract of the Minutes of the Annual General CommitteeMeeting 2006

The meeting was held in Neusiedl Austria on Thursday 27 July and comple-ted after the EC Prizegiving on Saturday 29 JulyIn attendance were the General Committee with apologies from Lin Rob-son, m Cook, Fulvio Colletti, Ian McCrossin and Richard Phillips.

Finances. The Hon Treasurer explained that the hand over from his predecessor wastaking a significant time as the bank required a great deal of documentati-on.Work is progressing with Adriaan Schmal to complete the previous ac-counts. The Hon Treasurer is also in contact with the Class Auditor. He hasestablished that the class has a healthy bank balance, and he believes we ha-ve enough funds to make appropriate investments for the class like newequipment and promotional material. The HonTreasurer will issue a budgetas soon as possible and agreed to encourageAdriaan Schmal to complete theoutstanding accounts.

Technical & Measurement:Peter Hinrichsen(PH) explained those issues which had been highlightedduring the measurement at Neusiedl.Personnel Floatation Devices(PFD).There was some confusion over the re-quirement for 50 Newton minimum buoyancy in the PFD, especially whe-re the PFD was in a small or medium size, for which at first view the labelscould be taken to imply 50 Newton buoyancy but on closer examination thesmaller sizes did not meet this specification. Some smaller sailors had foundit difficult to purchase 50 Newton PFDs which fit them. PH will write to IS-AF to see if they have an alternative wording for this rule.Bands: The bands on Masts and Booms were not all in contrasting colours, for example dark blue on black carbon masts, and were not always paintedas required by the class rules. The class rules are to be changed to remove theneed for a scribed mark on the mast and boom and define that on a carbonmast and booms, bands shall be white and remain visible.

CarbonMast weight:The evidence frommeasurement showed that most car-bon masts were in the range of 10.0 to 10.5 Kg.with the lowest weight being9.4Kg. The Selden Masts were about 10.5Kg and the Avant Gard 10.0Kg.Concern was expressed that in order to reduce weight further a move to veryhighmodulus carbon would be taken which would significantly increase costs. It was proposed that we should change the rule to set the minimum mastweight as 9.5 kg (from the present 8.5 kg) for 2008.There had been some issues with Rudders in profile and cross section.

Amount of measurement:There was discussion about the amount of checks we do at regattas. It waspointed out that this question has been raised at a number of competitors he-arings and themajority wanted to continue with the amount of measurementbeing done.It was suggested that we should change the checks we do at each event. Itwas pointed out that this is already the case, for example at the 2006WC rud-der and centreboard depth was measured, as this had not been done for so-me time. The measurers will review how measurement can be streamlined.

The lack of the digital readout on the class scale had been a problem at Neu-seidl as some competitors arrived expecting their boat to be weighted, the cor-rector weights adjusted and their certificate endorsed. This problem wasexacerbated by the fact that at Balaton measurement had been done in pou-ring rain, so certificates could not be altered. In future any competitor whowishes a change in his certificate correctors must notify the Chief Measurer. The rule however is that "each boat shall carry the corrector weight as shownon themeasurement certificate". . It was pointed out that measurement is on-ly a check, although the Chief Measurer and his team will try to be helpfulbut only if time permits. There was a suggestion that only a percentage of boats be checked, as a wayof reducing the time and effort taken over measurement. It was pointed outthat this would be very prejudicial to those chosen, while others go sailing, and not achieve the object of assuring all competitors that the competitionis fair. PH agreed to look to see if some form of compromise over time andeffort, without reducing standards, can be found.Measurement Budget. It was agreed that measurement at theWC and EC are a requirement for ourInternational status and that standards have to bemaintained. There is a cost

associated with this and the Chief Measurer is allocated a budget of 1500euros to defray expences of the measurement team.Championships.The following are planned or suggested.2007WC Mar Menor Spain July2008WC Napier NewZealand Dec/January20092009 WC Medemblik, Holland June.

We would wait for the proposal from Croatia before making a decision onEC 2008.Since the meeting this has been agreed.Vintage Yachting Games. A proposal has been received inviting the FD tojoin theVYG initiative. There was a consensus that this has the potential forgood publicity for the class, but there were concerns about the costs, as it isunclear that theVYGand its events are completely self funding. It was agreedthat Alberto Barenghi(AB) would write to the organizers to ask specifical-ly for details of the finances and a copy of the budgeted costs.

Publicity & Promotion.AB explained that the Harken contract runs to May 2008 and it is then like-ly that Harken will take a different approach. We can have 36,000 Eurosworth of clothing over three years. ((3*15,000) – 20%Vat). So far we have soldonly 2320 Euros and already spent more than that for containers to St Pe-tersburg.The current proposal is that each National Secretary is to be given some sam-ple clothing and together with the information on the website asked to col-lect orders which would be sent together toABwho would send the clothingto the Nat Sec for distribution. Each National organisation will be able to re-tain 10% of the sale value for their funds.Website.Tobias Frank(TF) stated that he thought that there was a need to change theimage of the International FD website. The current layout had been in pla-ce for some years and it needed changing. The first page would not seize theattention of a potential new sailor to the class. The website contains a lot ofgood information which needs to be retained. The first one or two levels ofpages need a new image.AB is to look at the costs of developing a new frontpage.Other Promotion.TF suggested that the class should have 2 or 3 promotional photographs,wit-hout copyright for the class to use.AB agreed to discuss this with the photo-grapher who took the photographs in Dervio.AB stated that he had a smallsample of a draft promotional DVDwhich he would show the committee af-ter the meeting to obtain their reaction and comments.Presidents Report. There were some comments on the sale of FD/Harken clothing at this event. In a short time before the prize giving 2500 Euros had been sold. It was sug-gested that we should a) have a poster. b) have some samples hanging up atmeasurement. c) sell items for 1 hour each day after sailing.AB agreed to or-ganise this at future events.Bulletin.The Bulletin is regarded as amajor instrument of promotion and advertising. There is a need to have one or more new editors. This has now been succes-sful. There is a great need for a variety of articles submitted by class mem-bers to provide an interesting publication.Boat Registration and Class Records.Zsofia Csanda is to take over the roles of Boat Registrar, Class Records andselling of Sail Buttons.ISAF Annual Conference.Alberto Barenghi, Stephen Parry and Peter Hinrichsen will attend the ISAFAnnual Conference.Appointments.Reappointed: VP Technical Peter Hinrichsen

Commodore NW Europe Enno KramerAppointed Chief Measurers John Best and Paul Hemker.

2007 AGCM:The 2007AGCM will be held in Mar Menor, the day after theWorld Cham-pionship on Sunday 22 July 2007.
