May 19, 2019 FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 19, 2019 Some people have a bucket list, things they want to do or experi- ence before they ‘kick the bucket,’ an in- teresting expression for dying. A bucket list reflects the values, goals and interests of the person who creates it. The list can also reveal a purpose or meaning that someone sees in his or her life. A life of faith has a purpose and meaning. Part of that purpose is to offer our praise and worship to God. The other part is to love and serve others. Faith without love is meaningless because one cannot exist without the other. Jesus tells His disciples as much when He offers a new command- ment to love others. Just as Jesus shares in the Father’s glory, we share in the glory of Jesus. We do as He did, preaching, teach- ing, healing and forgiving—all acts of love that allow us to experience the love of God. Instead of a bucket list, Christians should have a “Gospel List,” things they need to do so they live what they believe. Some things may take time to do, but there should always be something on our list that’s just waiting for some attention. Live the Beatitudes. Practice the Works of Mer- cy. Pray daily, read the Scriptures, receive the sacraments. Don’t wait until the last minute to try and live a lifetime of faith in a few moments. Use a big bucket! You’ll find it is better filled with blessings than wishes! James Gaffney Print to PDF without this message by purchasing novaPDF (http://www.novapdf.com/)

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 19, 2019

Some people have a bucket list, things they want to do or experi-

ence before they ‘kick the bucket,’ an in-teresting expression for dying. Jesus tells His disciples as much when He offers a new command-ment to love others. Just as Jesus shares in the Father’s glory, we share in the glory of Jesus. We do as He did, preaching, teach-ing, healing and forgiving—all acts of love that allow us to experience the love of God. Instead of a bucket list, Christians should have a “Gospel List,” things they need to do so they live what they believe. Some things may take time to do, but there should always be something on our list that’s just waiting for some attention. Live the Beatitudes. Practice the Works of Mer-cy. BACCALAUREATE MASS Today Sunday, May 19 ~ 6:30 Mass.

Please join us in celebrating our soon to be High School Graduates.

REFLECTIONS FROM OUR GRADUATING SENIORS:

“To me, it is more how St. Luke’s has shaped me as a person than spirit-ually. I attended the bi-weekly clas-

ses all through school learning from great teachers what it means to be a kind and caring individual. Each teacher and member practiced what they preached in class, volunteering time and energy to many good causes as well as offering opportunities for the youth to engage in the same activity. It be-came clear that the hours of volunteering were not forced to create a good resume for college or life. St Luke’s as a whole, just wanted to do the right thing. This really impacted me throughout my time at the church, nobody wanted recognition, they wanted re-sults and that is what it is all about for me. St Luke’s taught me to never expect anything in return, do good things because it is the right thing to do, not to put your name on the back of a shirt or the front of the newspaper. Ever since I learned this lesson, it became much easier for me to volunteer my efforts towards causes I believe in. I am constantly on call to help my friends and family with anything they may need. Growing up around the church and those that attend has lead me to becoming more than just a be-liever but a better person an someone who is always trying to better themselves and their community.”

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS: Registration is happening NOW! Our 2019-2020 calendar for Faith For-mation* classes may be found on our website. Register now for classes in September. You may register online or

in person for our Religious Education programs now and continuing through Friday, May 31. Go to: www.stlukes-parish.org or call our office at 508-366-8509.

*FAQ: WHAT IS “FAITH FORMATION”? You may remember it as “Confraternity of Christian Doc-trine” (you know, “CCD”!) or “Sunday School”. Why the name change? The Church now has all volunteer cate-chists, mostly parents who serve as role models and facili-tators of faith once per week for an hour or so. Parents are the primary educators responsible for carrying on the faith traditions and sharing in daily prayers at home. Our clas-ses are held on Sundays and Tuesdays. We provide assis-tance and resources for them to continue with daily “Faith Formation” at home with family.

“St. Luke’s donates 10% of its weekly collection through Sharing First . We donate to others be-fore attending to our own wants. Sharing First is unique not only because there is one

collection each week, but that we help the needy first. Please adjust your donation to include both Sharing First and St. Luke’s. Thank you for your generous support.

MAY 12 supports PASTORAL COUNSELING CENTERS OF MA in the amount of $1438 MAY 19 supports (TODAY) ST. THERESE & ST. FRANCIS CATHOLIC WORKER HOUSE MAY 26 supports MARTHA AND MARY MINISTRY

On May 26 our Sharing First donation will support St Luke’s Martha and Mary Ministry. The Martha and Mary’s is a group of parish volunteers who host a reception and serve a meal to the family and friends of the deceased after the funeral Mass. St Luke’s is able to continue to show loving compassion and care for the family by welcoming them in our Parish Center as they gather together. This is available to all parishioners as long as our Parish Center is not being used for another scheduled parish event. There is no charge for this but donations are always welcome and appreciated ~ allowing the ministry to continue. Martha and Mary Ministry welcomes new volunteers. We are blessed to still have some of the women who began this ministry over 20 years ago; others have passed on or moved away. Each person chooses the area that best suits their talent - one may bake, help with food preparation, set-up tables, serve or clean-up. Volun-teer forms are on our parish website or you may contact

ST. LUKE THE EVANGELIST CHURCH IS OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY, 7 DAYS A WEEK, WE CAN MAKE A VISIT ANYTIME WE PASS.

JESUS WILL BE AS HAPPY TO SEE US AS WE ARE TO SEE HIM.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER “I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another." (John 13:34) It is easy to love someone when they love you back. But it takes strength and courage to love someone when we feel unappreciated, used or feel our opinion doesn’t matter. It takes courage to “love my neighbor” when he may be someone I don’t like, someone I don’t know or someone that doesn’t look like me.

PARTNERS IN CHARITY

A few weekends ago we had our parish commitment weekend for the 2019 Partners in Charity Appeal. Thank you for those who made a gift, and a special thank you for those who gave for the first time. To date, we have re-ceived over $80,000 toward our goal of $142,000. This represents just 195 gifts from our parish. To reach our goal we need the support of all 1900 families in the parish. If you have not made your gift or pledge, please prayerful-ly consider making your pledge and return it to the rectory or place it in the collection basket. If you have misplaced your pledge envelope, there are some in the back of th4e church. With your help we can reach our goal soon.

May Celebration

Our May meeting will be held on Monday, May 20, as Memorial Day falls on our usual meeting day. Join us at 9:45 a.m. to celebrate the month of our Blessed Mother with a recitation of the rosary, a cor-onation ceremony with prayer and song, and an of-fering of our petitions. Sue Landry will lead us in the rosary and, after the coronation, she will entertain us with an informative presentation in her usual witty style. Please remember to bring a flower for the cer-emony. Also, reserve your seat for our bus trip to Reagle Theatre on Thurs., July 11, to see Sound of Music. The total cost is $35, and only 20 tickets are availa-ble. Don’t delay!
