STILLS

+ights

+ights magazine is about constantly evolving concepts. Each issue is based on one idea or concept formed outside of the fashion context, which is then applied to form new perceptions and visual information from the unexpected. The pages of +ights are filled with a fashioned response to a current theme, idea or practitioner. The ideas are broken down, studied then reapplied, from the non-fashion context to the glam-orized platform of the Fashion magazine. It becomes a process of re-definition, transferring and blurring the lines further between Fashion and thought.

+ights is styled and created, from the drawing board to the final layout, by stylist Lara Angol

EDI+OR’S NOTE

After countless hours sourcing, styling, shooting, cropping and photo-shopping, +ights Magazine has finally arrived!

For it’s launch issue, the maiden voyage into the boundless sea of Fashion publica-tions, we zoom in on the work of Swedish Contemporary Artist Hanna Terese Nilsson. It was her washed out 90’s palette and low maintenance still life installations that drew me in like elastic. With a keen eye for finding beauty where you thought there was none and a knack for interesting and obscure compositions, Nilsson’s work is a beacon of inspiration for all those intrigued by alchemy. By sensitively coupling the most ordinary of objects (like a bit of white toast and half used roll of cling-film) along side awkwardly draped dated fabrics and creamy marbledpapers, Nilsson challenges her audience to see pre-existing, and often bland, visual information in new ways. Alone, objects hold entirely different meanings and functions as to when they are contextualized within her still life compositions.

With this firmly in mind, issue 01. adopts Nilsson’s concept, applying it this time to the context of the Fashion magazine. The glamorized platform of the editorial Fashion spread sees charity shop dregs, cotton face wipes, layers of plastic catering gloves and lank bargain bin false hair transformed into something beautiful.

Look closely and you’ll see this issue is littered with re-imaginings and new concep-tions, the perfect way to celebrate the first issue of +ights!
