“IGIDR is a high-profile, post-graduate level research and teaching institute, offering M.Sc.

(Econ.), M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees. It strives to impart professional training in virtually all branches

of Economics to its students. Among the areas which receive special emphasis are Money, Banking &

Finance, Agricultural & Rural Development, Industrial Economics, Energy & Environment,

International Trade, Political Economy and Public Economics. IGIDR can legitimately claim pride in

its premier faculty of international standing and up-to-date facilities. Analytical insights, quantitative

abilities and field experience are all blended into the various courses offered. Its graduates therefore

develop wide-ranging expertise on several broad fronts. Our alumni have, over the years, acquired an

excellent reputation in academics, business, NGOs and civil services.”

FROM THE DEAN’S DESK

“IGIDR is a relatively young national institute set in an international mould. This is reflected in

its cutting edge curriculum, accomplished faculty, a vibrant student body which is diverse in its

academic background as well as national character, and alumni spread all around the globe in

leadership roles both in academia and industry. Out of 1500 or so applicants, only 35 make it through

a stringent selection process. Those selected go through one of the toughest graduate programs in

economics which emphasizes mastery of tools with an accent on quantitative reasoning, as one cannot

think about complex real world problems without such tools. The program is unique in its emphasis

on research assistantships whereby students assist faculty in various research projects, to gain a

glimpse into Indian and international economic problems. They are taught to handle large data sets

and analyze them using various quantitative tools, and more importantly understand how to interpret

the results. The other point which I would like to highlight is that they are equally good in their

managerial abilities - in thinking fresh, putting across those thoughts precisely, and the ability to lead

from the front, attributes that are normally associated with top business schools. IGIDR students are

part of that rare breed that can excel in both back office analytics and front office leadership. No

wonder then that our students are in leadership roles at American Express US, Citibank, Household

Corp., and so on and are spread all over the world.”

“...With changing times, our teaching programs have evolved. In August 2003, a new post-graduate program

of M.Sc. in Economics was initiated. The students are exposed to the most modern methods of economic

analysis and trained in sophisticated computational skills, on par with the training provided to our M.Phil./PhD.

students. In addition to the core courses in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics among others,

the students have the option of choosing a number of optional courses. The course curricula are updated

regularly based on recent advances and students’ evaluation is based on a number of criteria including classroom

participation, presentations, term papers, other assignments and, more importantly, regular examinations. The

students are encouraged to participate in seminars and workshops that are conducted in the institute throughout

the year. Besides, a very low student-teacher ratio ensures that the students receive personal attention from the

best of the faculty. The postgraduate programs have helped students develop excellent analytical and empirical

skills, which is why IGIDR has been a cherished destination for many of our recruiters…..”

A Summer Placement Program (May-July) aimed at internships for I Year M.Sc. students is also organized by the Placement Cell. This also

established a 100% Summer Placement Record last year.

The Placement Committee cordially invites corporate firms, banks, research organizations, government institutions and non-government institutions

Regular term papers and presentations produce a class of students who have good presentation and writing skills apart from analytical capabilities. High teacher-student ratio helps us make our lectures interactive and assess students on a continuous basis instead of a one-off examination. Research Assistantships offered in the Institute also exposes students to the concerns of the real world and enables them to get hands-on experience in using their analytical knowledge in conjunction with data analysis tools.

FINAL PLACEMENT PROCESS The final placement process begins from 14th December 2009 onwards. The placement process typically involves a Pre-Placement Talk in October/ November followed by a visit by the company during Placement Week where they conduct Aptitude Tests, Group Discussions and, Personal Interviews in order to recruit students. Some companies also include a Personality Profiling round (Psychometric Tests) in their recruitment process. During the Pre-Placement Talk, companies are required to indicate the profiles they will be recruiting for, the locations they are recruiting for and the kind of compensation they will be offering. The slot that the company will be allocated during the Placement Week will depend upon the preference of the students and the relationship that the company shares with IGIDR.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS In addition to final placements, companies and research organizations also take on first year M.Sc. students for summer internships. Interviews for summer interns also take place alongside final placements during the placement week. The rounds in the summer internship process are similar to the final placement process. However, companies are free to tailor it as they deem fit.
