Principle 5: God Remits Temporal Punishments through the Church

God uses the Church when he removes temporal penal-

es. This is the essence of the doctrine of indulgences. Ear-lier we defined indulgences as “what we receive when the Church lessens the temporal penal es to which we may be subject even though our sins have been forgiven.” The members of the Church became aware of this principle through the sacrament of penance. From the beginning, acts of penance were assigned as part of the sacrament because the Church recognized that Chris ans must deal with temporal penal es, such as God’s discipline and the need to compensate those our sins have injured. In the early Church, penances were some mes severe. For serious sins, such as apostasy, murder, and abor on, the penances could stretch over years, but the Church rec-ognized that repentant sinners could shorten their pen-ances by pleasing God through pious or charitable acts that expressed sorrow and a desire to make up for one’s sin. The Church also recognized that the dura on of tem-

poral punishments could be lessened through the involve-ment of other persons who had pleased God. Scripture tells us God gave the authority to forgive sins “to men” (Ma . 9:8) and to Christ’s ministers in par cular. Jesus told them, “As the Father has sent me, even so I send you. . . . Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are for-given; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained” (John 20:21–23). If Christ gave his ministers the ability to forgive the eter-nal penalty of sin, how much more would they be able to remit the temporal penal es of sin! Christ also promised his Church the power to bind and loose on earth, saying, “Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” (Ma . 18:18). As the context makes clear, binding and loosing cover Church discipline, and Church discipline involves administering and removing tem-poral penal es (such as barring from and readmi ng to the sacraments). Also you may deliver directly to St. Benedict’s at the Mass you a end. Leave them in the back of the church during Christmas week.

Tradición de Árbol de navidad parroquial

Durante años ha sido una tradición en nuestra parroquia comprar y envolver juguetes para colocarlos alrededor del árbol de Navidad en la iglesia de San Benito o del Sagrado Corazón. Si desea par cipar en la tradición navideña, por favor, recoja una e queta de regalo de la canasta cerca del árbol y compre un regalo para el niño en la e queta. Cuando envuelva el regalo, asegúrese de pegar firmemente la e queta al paquete y luego llevar el regalo a la misa y colocarlo debajo del árbol. Otra forma es comprar una tarjeta de regalo o un cer ficado de regalo en endas de comes bles locales o en

Parish Christmas Tree—Giving Tradi on

For years it has been a tradi on in our parish to purchase and wrap toys to be placed around the Christmas giving tree at St. Benedict or Sacred Heart Church. If you wish to par cipate in the Christmas giving tradi on please pick up a gi tag from the basket near the tree and buy a gi for the child on the tag. When you wrap the gi please be sure to tape the tag secure-ly to the package and then bring the gi with you to Mass and place it under the tree. Another way is to buy a gi card or gi cer ficate from local grocery or department stores such as Safeway, Nob Hill, Lucky’s, Target, Kmart, etc. If you with to help a family in this way, you can purchase a gi card and bring it to the pastoral office. Thank you and may God reward you for your generosity.

Monthly Calvary Cemetery Mass has resumed

We have resumed having a monthly Mass at Calvary cemetery to pray for our beloved death. We will have it every first Wednesday of the month at 5PM, Calvary Cemetery.

Fishes and Loaves

We would like to thank all of our parishioners and friends for your generous support of our ministry. We would also like to thank the Community Founda on of San Benito County for the generous grant of $7,500.00 we re-ceived this year. Because of this grant, we are able to con n-ue our Thanksgiving and Christmas outreach to the labor camps in our county. This year we will be serving 150 plus families at these camps. We must of course, thank our wonderful volunteers who donate so much me and energy to this outreach. Many of them have been doing this for years under the leadership of Paul Armbruster. Paul is again leading the holiday effort to the labor camps. All year we supply nourishing food to the needy of San Be-nito County from 10:00AM to 12:00 Noon, Monday through Friday. Your dona ons of food through the baskets at both St. Benedict Church and Sacred Heart Church go a long way in helping us to help those most in need. We are also grateful for your monetary dona ons. Please remember to leave only non-perishable foods in these baskets. If you have produce, store bought pastry prod-ucts, and other perishable goods please bring them to the Pastoral Center during the regular business hours, from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. This way we can be sure your dona ons will be as fresh as possible for those we assist.
