SIX FLAGS THEME PARKSRollercoaster
Here iglide® Z bearings led to significant reduction of maintenancecosts. This was achieved by eliminating the maintenance workcompletely during the season. With iglide® Z bear ings it is not nec-essary to check or relubricate the mounts and shafts. Moreover itwas possible to reduce the weight.
Spreaders
The special design to complement to centrifugal arm results in asignificant reduction in the manufacturing costs. Also, the highwear resistance and freedom from maintenance make iglide® theobvious choice.
Washing chain bearings
Reduction of the drive power for bottle washing machines was animportant result achieved by using iglide® RN bear ings. This wasaccomplished under the most difficult conditions in a 2-3% solutionof caustic soda at a temperature of 176°F.
Cart
Enormous weight reduction possible with iglide® L280 bearings is asignificant advantage in racing. Also, the dry operation of thesebearings means that no maintenance is required.
Tool changer chain
The enormous cost advantages in comparison to standardcommercial metallic rolled bushings as well as the extremely highresistance to wear distinguish iglide® D bear ings. Moreover iglide®
D bearings have extremely low coefficients of friction, allowing usewith “soft” shaft materials.
Axle bearings
The edge load is usually a deciding factor for or against the use ofbearings particularly in axle bearings for agricultural vehicles.iglide® G300 bearings fulfill this requirement with additionaladvantages such as high resistance to wear, low costs, resistanceto corrosion and extreme insensitivity to contamination.
Tubular bag machines
The continuous operating temperature in the bonding arms on atubular bag machine frequently reach 320°F and higher. Theserequirments are fulfilled by iglide® Z bearings which also offerparticularly high resistance to wear.

DryLin® linear plain bearings are an ideal alternative totraditional re-circulating ball bearing systems. Thesesliding plain bearings are made of high-performancepolymers from igus®’ iglide® series. DryLin® linear bearingscan be used if dirt, dust or moisture is present, for shortstroke applications, or if a lubrication-free solution isneeded.
DryLin® linear slide tables are also designed for dry running. As a result, dust and dirt will not cling to the bearingsurfaces. DryLin® linear bearings also have no minimumstroke-length restrictions, unlike re-circulating ball bearings. They deliver quiet operation and are corrosion-resistant.
igus® also offers flat, compact leadscrew linear tablesfor variable formats and handling tasks. The lineartable is extremely rigid due to the hard-anodizedaluminum shaft and is also made of igus®’ high-performance iglide® polymers.

Champagne-bottle sealing machine / bottling technology
This application, which is designed as a rotary transfer machine, seals champagne bottles with corks, aluminum caps and wirebraid. The fact that the DryLin® guide systems are lubricant free isimportant in the food sector, as is the systems resistance tofrequent cleaning and chemicals.
Forming, filling and sealing machine / filling technology
DryLin® high-temperature bearings are used to guide the tools of thisforming, filling and sealing machine. The bearings are exposed to tem-peratures of up to 248°F and operate without lubricants. The chemicalresistance of the iglide® T500 material makes the guide systemresistant to corrosive cleaning agents. This minimizes downtime.
Systems for the production of aluminum cartridges
This system can cold-press, varnish and print many different kinds ofcylindrical aluminum parts. The DryLin® R linear plain bearings werechosen because they are absolutely lubricant-free and resistant tovarnish-mist. The extremely low amount of space required by iglide® Jbearings and their resistance to corrosion were the decisive factorsfor using these products.
Inspection optics ERSASCOPE
The patented ERSASCOPE optical system is the first opticalinspection system worldwide to enable undisturbed observation ofhidden solder joints under components. The optical system ispositioned vertically by the DryLin® T linear guide system; theinfinitely adjustable clearance provides the necessary precisionand low-noise, vibration-free operation.
Positioning of milling heads
This machine produces aluminum window frames; the DryLin®
leadscrew-driven linear table HTS is used to position the millingheads. As the DryLin® system does not require any lubricants for thebearings, aluminum dust and chips are not caught up in the system.
Machine-tooling plant / door adjustment
The smooth, maintenance-free operation and the enormous costadvantages mean that DryLin® R linear plain bearings on hard-anodized guide shafts are used to guide the doors of machine tools. As the guidance systems operate dry, there are no maintenance costs. The fact that the systems do not use any lubricant means that nochips get caught in the machine.

Lubrication-free with igus®
good for the environmentand the wallet
Plastic bearings offer environmental benefits
Tribologically optimized iglide® plastic plain bearingsfrom igus® require neither oil nor grease. They arelubrication-free, so no contaminants escape into theenvironment. One billion gallons of industrial lubricants are con-sumed annually in the united states, of which andestimated 40 percent is released into the environ-ment. This is becoming increasingly environmentallyunacceptable and there is a growing need to find‘green’ substitutes.Due to continually advancing bearing technology, igus® is able to supply metal plain and rolling bear-ing alternatives more in line with environmental con-siderations for an increasing number of applications. The amount of oil used in plastics manufacturing isalso very positive in comparison with aluminum andsteel production. Whereas the energy from 16quarts of oil is necessary to produce 1 quart of alu-minum, and 1 quart of steel requires 12 quarts of oil,to produce 1 quart of plastic only needs an averageof 1.9 quarts of oil. The production of plastics onlymakes up 4 percent of annual oil requirements glob-ally.
Lubricant-free and light
The solid lubricants contained within iglide® polymerplain bearings are not the only ecologically valuablebenefit. The lightweight bearings can also help toreduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide outputin vehicles or aircrafts, for example. The reducedweight leads to lower masses and subsequentlylower energy consumption. The high chemical resistance of plastic bearings isanother positive ecological aspect because metalsare often coated to achieve this effect. This takesplace in environmentally unfriendly, high-energy zincgalvanizing baths.
In contrast to metallic plain and rollingbearings, iglide® plastic plain bearingsfrom igus® require no oil or grease

Plastics for longer lifeHigh performance iglide® bearings are a viable, cost-effective alterna-
tive to metal, ball bearings, and bronze. They are fast becoming a stan-dard choice for design engineers. Engineers are realizing that advancedsynthetic compounds provide more design opportunities than traditionalmaterials. Based on customer applications and requirements the igus®
research and development team is continually developing new materials tomeet these challenges. All iglide® maintenance-free bearings deliver supe-rior performance, even in severe environments.
Very few basic materials can be modified and adapted, as well as thermoplastics. Thermoplastics can be pro-duced with lubricants, they can be reinforced mechanically by the addition of technical fibers, or they can be variedby additional filling materials, especially in regard to friction and wear behavior. The solid lubricants used in iglide® bearings are, as microscopic particles, embedded in millions of tiny chambers ofthe mostly fiber-reinforced material. From these chambers, the plain bearings release tiny amounts of solid lubricantsduring movement. The solid lubricants help to lower the coefficient of friction of the iglide® bearing. Since they areembedded in the tiny chambers, they cannot be pressed out. They are always there as soon as the bearing or theshaft is set in motion. Because iglide bearings are self-lubricating, an external lubricant is not necessary.

The Y.E.S. Program is designed to foster the mechanical designideas of students and to educate them on the merits and benefitsof plastic components. Through Y.E.S. igus® has reached out tostudents, competitions and engineeering programs from across theUnited States, Canada and Mexico.
A FIRST team used iglide® bearings in themechanum wheels of its robot.
A team from Canada used Energy Chain® whilebuilding a walking robot.
Igus has sponsored URI mini baja teams since 2004.Shown here: the 2005 team
Through the Y.E.S. Program, igus®:
offers free product donations to students, engineers and professors foruse in various design competitions, school projects and engineeringcurriculums;
supports the visions of various engineering competitions by donatingproducts, technical support and other resources;
revitalizes students’ interest in engineering; and
aids in making the unique design ideas of students and engineers areality.
Y.E.S. Facts The Y.E.S. Program is open to students of all ages and grade levels, as
well as teams and engineers competing in robotic competitions.
The Y.E.S. Program has sponsored additional competitions such asFIRST, BEST, MATE ROV, DARPA, Challenge X and the SAE CollegiateDesign Series.
The Y.E.S. Program offers lecture engagements presented by bearingsand cable carrier experts at schools and universities across the UnitedStates, Canada and Mexico.
Students have the opportunity to see their accomplishments featuredon the Y.E.S. website by submitting information about the uniqueapplication, how they used igus products and pictures.

Igus® brought together a panel of experts in science and engineering to uncover and honor the top engineeringdesigns using plastic bearings in new and ingenious ways. The winning applications were chosen frommore than 60 entries based on creativity, technical advancement and economic impact. See more applicationsonline at www.manus.igus.com.
Six Flags Theme ParksRollercoaster
The world’s only 4th dimensional rollercoaster neededa lubrication-free, maintenance-free bearing due totight space restrictions. High loads were also a factor,as well as high flexibility to provide the high level ofvibration dampening essential for optimal performance.Iglide® Z not only met these requirements, butsignificantly reduced costs by more than 50 percentand virtually eliminated maintenance.
Harriston IndustriesAgricultural Machinery
Iglide® J replaced bronze bearings on the company’spotato planter, which continually experienced high wearand premature failure due to very abrasive conditions.High salt content in the air was also causing corrosionand seizure. Iglide® J eliminated corrosion and increasedlifespan by 500-600 percent at a cost 70-80 percentlower.
Nova BiomedicalMedical Device
The company chose to use DryLin® R bearings on itstwo-axis tray and both DryLin® R and DryLin® N linearslides on its three-axis probe. Repetitive motion, saltwater contamination, high temperatures and thecrucial need for accurate positioning prompted Novato try DryLin®. The bearings also needed to belubrication-free to prevent contamination. DryLin’s low-cost and ease-of-use were the determining factors.
