The first IGU e-Newsletter (July 2006) was the care of a large Editorial Board: Editor-in-Chief: Ronald F. Abler - Associate Editor: Markku Löytönen - Editors: Giuliano Bellezza, Woo-ik Yu - Managing Editor: Laura Ayo - Publisher: Home of Geography. In the subsequent years, the board shrunk substantially to the point that, by issue 26 (October 2011), it consisted of Editor-in-Chief: Ronald F. Abler and Editor Giuliano Bellezza. Personnel on the Board stayed the same ever since. The shrinking has now reached its ultimate end: with the present issue, the Editorial Board is composed only by me. I’ll do my best to deliver a good product, but readers should be aware that contributors only rarely are native speakers of English (and, even less, native writers). I will really miss the support of the Editor in Chief, but I find consolation in knowing that my friendship with my great Big Brother Ron (and with Barbara) will never wane.

2) DRAFT MINUTES OF THE EC MEETING KYOTO, INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION CENTER

Welcome, Meeting Logistics and Introductions

The meeting was chaired by President Vladimir Kolossov, who welcomed Secretary-General Mike Meadows and Vice-Presidents Ron Abler, Dietrich Soyez, RB Singh, Joos Droogleever-Fortuijn, Yukio Himiyama, Giuliano Bellezza, Jarkko Saarinen, Aharon Kellerman and Qin Dahe.

Adoption of the Agenda The agenda prepared and distributed in advance of the meeting was adopted.

Minutes The minutes of the Rohtak March 2013 meeting had previously been approved via email and were tabled for noting.

Organization and Operations Commission Assignments, Liaison and Membership. President Kolossov asked for ideas as to how to structure the scheduled meeting with Commission (and National Committee chairs) that was taking place within the Kyoto Regional Conference. Suggestions included the matter of IGU conference registration fees; communication with and co-operation between commissions, including possible involvement in initiatives such as Future Earth, joint research projects funded by major bodies (the example of the Mediterranean Commission’s award of Marie Curie funding applies), the possibility of an ‘excellence award’, incentives for commissions that best achieve IGU objectives or increase membership, and a possible registration fee discount for chairs that convene sessions at IGU conferences and congresses. SG Meadows tabled a draft list of criteria for an IGU Commission excellence award and, with additional criteria, this would be discussed at the upcoming Chairs meeting. A financial reward (US$2500 annually) seems feasible with the suggestion that the winning chairs use the sum to encourage participation of younger or developing world geographers in commission activities; it was further agreed that the winning Commission chair (or nominee) be invited to present a plenary address at an appropriate IGU conference or congress (in consultation with the Local Organising Committee). A sub-committee of VPs Droogleever-Fortuijn, Soyez, Bellezza and Abler was established to finalise the criteria and administer the award. The matter of communication with Commission (and National Committees) was discussed at length and some ideas as to how to improve the level of contact were put forth. President Kolossov presented an analysis of the IGU commission steering committee membership. The prominence of USA representation and developed countries as a

whole was noted, as was the limited representation from the developing world. The presentation is to be edited and prepared for distribution via the e-newsletter (Meadows, Bellezza). Executive Committee Calendar 2013-14. The upcoming EC calendar was tabled is as follows: Moscow, Russia: arrival 26th April 2014, meeting 27th and 28th, two day excursion 29th, 30th April, 1st May 2014 departures. Krakow, Poland; arrival 14th August 2014, meeting 15th and 17th August, Excursion 16th August, thereafter attend the Regional Conference. Cape Town, South Africa: November 2014 (actual dates to be confirmed with new EC members following the 2014 IGU election, but the second half of the month is desirable). IGU Country Membership Report. Outstanding 2013 dues reminders have been sent out and the subscriptions continue to be credited so that the revenue situation for this year is predicted to be approximately the same as in previous years. SG Meadows requested some assistance from EC members with respect to subscriptions from countries as appropriate (All). There has been limited success in renewed subscriptions from some countries (e.g. Pakistan, Ghana) and some encouraging communications with representatives either from ‘new’ countries (e.g. Serbia) or lapsed members (e.g. Vietnam, Colombia). SG Meadows noted the increased category of membership for China-Beijing (with supplementary subscription of an additional US$2500 annually) and thanked VP Qin for the part he had played in this. Meadows also mentioned the donation of the South African IGU National Committee to formally provide full member Category A status of Zimbabwe for a trial period of three years. VP Abler reported that the United States has agreed to contribute $1,000 per year to the IGU Country Dues Fund. SG Meadows should bill the USA for its statutory amount plus $1,000 in a single invoice each year. African and other Developing Country Membership. Soyez commented on the ongoing difficulty of fostering membership in other developing countries. Meadows made the point that such funds could possibly be better spent by supporting conference attendance of younger delegates rather than a simple ‘donation’ of membership subscription to the IGU, or to initiate a research project; building up contacts with younger geographers is probably the best way forward; even visits by EC members to national conferences could be more useful. Ton Dietz is able to supply contact email addresses, although many of these would not regard themselves as ‘geographers’. In order to grow the African geographer contact list, SG Meadows agreed to approach African National Committee chairs with a view to obtaining their own list of email contacts. It was agreed to renew efforts stimulate IGU in Africa through a Regional Conference and the establishment of a regional network (Meadows, Soyez). Funding possibilities for this could include CODESRIA. It was agreed to make available the ‘African’ email address list to facilitate wider circulation of the e-newsletter to African geographers (Meadows, Bellezza). IGU Financial Report and Projection. Meadows again reported that the financial situation of the IGU remains sound although must be carefully monitored given that we are currently in a cycle of annual Regional Conferences with intendant travel grant commitments, as well as the increased level of annual funding to IYGU. VP Abler noted that Euro 5000 from the proceeds of the IGU Cologne Congress has been credited to the Endowment Fund, which has a balance exceeding US$36000 (although the interest rates are very low and there is a need to find a more efficient means of investing this amount). Means of increasing IGU funding were discussed briefly but it was agreed that raising subscription funds at this stage would probably not be well received by the National Committees.

IGU Publications. A special session on this matter is scheduled at the Kyoto conference. VP Saarinen reported on discussions he had held at the recent conference of Nordic Geographers around the possibility of a dedicated IGU journal in online format; the physical geographers in particular have some misgivings due to ISI accreditation issues. There are clearly many challenges and the special session would hopefully suggest possible ways forward. San Francisco Declaration. This declaration was tabled and, although it was agreed that the EC should endorse this on behalf of the IGU, the document will be made available in print form at the Commission Chairs meeting to elicit broader support. Geographical Journals Project. There is nothing to report here, the Journals Project continues to work well on the IGU website and would be raised as background information to the special publications session at the Kyoto Regional Conference. Sustainable Cities. The OurSus project is operational with a focus on China although there is a lack of clarity around the viability of the suggested business model. There is an obvious need for support structures to be developed in other countries so that the initiative can diffuse further; there is a plan to incorporate at least one Japanese city in association with the Kyoto Regional Conference. A special session at the conference is devoted to the initiative. IGU expansion. The IGU has only a limited footprint. VP Kellerman referred to initiatives to improve this through contact with, for example RGS and AAG, and the idea of incentives to commissions to double their membership. The more people who know about the IGU, the more are likely to want to join in our activities. EC members should approach officers of appropriate national geographical associations or societies to request that they place a link to the IGU on their websites. There is a need to follow up on individual contacts that EC members have (All). The Kyoto LOC is to be asked to do it jointly with President Kolossov to facilitate further diffusion of IGU materials (Meadows). IGU Regional Networks, YES. Singh reported on efforts regionally to invite participants from other Asian countries to IGU-accredited meetings that take place, usually annually, in India, as well as to invite participation to the annual national conference. The EGAL meeting in Peru had been attended by Alcantara-Ayala and, although separate from IGU, there are indications of an active network of Geographers in Latin America. Delgado-Estrada is attending the Kyoto meeting and can be approached individually for comments. There is an East Asian body that is meeting in association with the Kyoto Regional Conference but is not formally affiliated with the IGU. The IGU network of former Soviet Union countries remains active and there is an upcoming meeting in October in Kazakhstan. Wang Meng, President of the Young Earth Scientists network attended for discussion of this particular network. He introduced YES as a legacy of IYPE. YES is a network of early career geoscientists with members from 121 countries and 3000 members (under 35) with substantial membership from South Africa. The next Congress is scheduled for Tanzania in July 2014 and there are many other initiatives and projects underway. Wang suggested the possibility of a ‘young section’ for the IGU and offered assistance in establishing such a structure and this is clearly in line with one of the major current priorities of the IGU, possibly in the form of establishing a new young scholars Task Force. It was agreed that IGU should be represented at the YES congress in Tanzania in 2014.

Sesquicentennial and Centennial Task Force. Abler tabled the document that identifies the list of possible members of the Task Force and has drafted a letter of invitation to be sent by President Kolossov. The matter as to how to get this underway was raised as was the most relevant possible location. It was agreed that the Krakow Regional Conference should be used to get this underway and invitations to attend that meeting should be sent to the ten initial members. In addition to the 2022 Congress, the Task Force should be encouraged to develop other special mementos (a publication documenting the history of the IGU for example). In relation to this, it would be desirable to have available photographs of Executive Committee meetings, conference and congresses and EC members are encouraged to submit them to the archive via the Secretary-General (All). IGU Website and IGU Social Networking. The intended re-design is underway and is planned to be launched before the end of the year. The Facebook page for IGU is in operation and a live-link to the website is under construction (Meadows). IGU Bulletin. Meadows tabled the recently published Volume 61-62 of the IGU Bulletin, representing the years 2011-12. Future issues will return to an annual volume format. UN-IYGU. Benno Werlen attended the meeting for this item and reported on recent activities. He made a presentation highlighting the key developments. A new landmark has been achieved as Rwanda has agreed to submit the IYGU draft resolution to the Executive Board of UNESCO through the vehicle of appropriate member countries. The level of support from the major global scientific organisations is secured through ICSU, ISSC and CIHPS and, through this, truly global coverage. The Regional Action Centres (of several different possible types) are proposed and up to 12 localities are being considered and are either confirmed (Beijing, Kigali) or in progress. The goal of IYGU was presented as ‘365 contributions to global sustainability’ with three levels of action: research, education, communication. A number of events are planned including ‘global’ launches. Copyright issues regarding the logo etc. are under consideration. Werlen also reported on the TIERS project and the proceedings have been professionally edited into a 180-200pp book which is almost ready to be published. Funding is required to subsidise publication and it was agreed that the President should again approach the GeoUnions for a contribution to IYGU with in this mind. IGU E-Newsletter Update. The newsletter plays an essential role in communicating to the broader community. If the draft minutes of the current meeting can be fast-forwarded for approval, then it will be possible to include them in the forthcoming newsletter (Meadows). IGU Archives. The Memorandum of Agreement has been formally signed by both parties and, with significant intervention from VP Bellezza, the IGU archives were transferred to Leipzig where work is underway to curate them. The Leipzig archivists have now been able to assess the nature of the archival material and made constructive suggestions regarding the need to establish a more professional approach to collection and collation of documents going forward. VP Abler reported that some IGU archival materials from before c1950 was accessioned by the Royal Geographical Society and may now be irretrievable. VP Bellezza agreed to write to Lentz and Soyez describing in more detail the nature of the materials transferred. It was also agreed that

Soyez should visit Leipzig before the next EC meeting to discuss with the archivists directly as to how material can be better prepared in future for archiving (Soyez). Dialogue Project. S-G Meadows has received copies of the video interviews from the University of Lund library and is planning to make these available via the IGU website when time allows. IGU and Academic Teaching in Geography. VP Droogleever-Fortuijn reported that a special session in relation to this new initiative will be held at the Kyoto Regional Conference. There are positive indications regarding attendance; several ideas were discussed as to how best to stimulate activity around this important issue in the future, including the inclusion of further special sessions at the Krakow and Moscow Regional Conferences subject to agreements from the relevant local organizing committees (Droogleever-Fortuijn). IGU Priorities Update. President Kolossov agreed to draft a streamlined version of the IGU Priorities. He further suggested that IGU should consider developing longer term strategic planning, for example towards 2022, and will forward a formal request to the EC members (Kolossov).

Cooperation and Outreach Festival International de Géographie. Soyez is attending the upcoming Festival in October and will present a lecture as an official IGU representative. It was suggested that Soyez request the FIG organizing committee to ensure that the geographical community of the 2014 (and beyond) chosen ‘guest country’ be adequately informed of the decision in future years through contact via the IGU National Committee where possible. There is no further news from Christian Pierret regarding his proposal to establish a School of Applied Geography in St Dié. IGU Representatives on International Bodies. IGU now has official representatives on several international scientific bodies. Former VP Fincher has been re-nominated to the Executive Committee of ISSC with a decision due at the General Assembly in Montreal, October 2013. Karen O’Brien (IGU nominee) and VP Qin Dahe have been elected to the Scientific Committee of the ICSU Future Earth programme. Etienne Nel is an IGU nominee on CROP and has reported briefly on the activities of this committee around reformulating the Millennium Development Goals and the development of new poverty metrics. Professor Haruyama has been nominated by IGU to serve on the Scientific Committee of IRDR and the outcome of that nomination is awaited. ICSU, Future Earth and Earth Science Matters. President Kolossov, SG Meadows and VP Abler attended the latest GeoUnions meeting in Paris, April, ahead of the scheduled ICSU Unions meeting. The minutes of that meeting were tabled and it was noted that the relationship between IGU and the other GeoUnions remains cordial and positive. ICSU Future Earth remains a very powerful opportunity for geographers to contribute to global science. IGU agreed to contribute to the ISPRS ‘VALID’ publication on disaster risk; IUGG is developing an initiative for an International Year of Deltas and it was agreed to support this. From the perspective of Earth Science Matters and its relevance to Geoparks, VP Singh reported that the first issue of the International Journal of Geoheritage has now been published with contributions from members of the EC. VP Bellezza is also contact with De Mulder, who has asked if IGU has taken a decision

regarding membership of the Foundation with intendent financial implications. However, a financial contribution to ESM does not appear to be feasible at this stage. Regarding Geoparks, VP Bellezza is in contact with Dongying Wei, Chair of the IGU Commission of that name to explore the feasibility of organizing, in association with the Beijing Congress, the Olympiad (and the EC meeting) in a nearby Geopark. ISSC. Information is received regularly about ISSC activities and former VP Fincher had submitted a brief report. IGU will be represented at the upcoming General Assembly in Montreal by President Kolossov and VP Kellerman. The WSSF takes place in association with the GA, there are several geographers presenting papers in various panels. The World Social Science Report has contributions about aspects of Geography compiled by President Kolossov and Meadows. Affiliation with other organizations. President Kolossov encouraged EC members to remain active as contact persons with their allocated external organizations and to try to facilitate joint activities where appropriate. With regard to UNESCO, ALESCO, UNU and TWAS there is nothing to report. IUGG’s affiliated association, IAG, has a 150th anniversary meeting in Potsdam in early September and Soyez will represent IGU. EUROGEO/EUGEO. President Kolossov and Bellezza will attend the EUROGEO annual meeting in Rome in September. There will be representation from EUGEO; IGU representatives will attempt to facilitate better relations between the two organisations. ICA. The ICA is scheduled to hold its next Congress in Germany in late August; it is considered important that the IGU consolidate its relationship with the cartographers and, in addition to the participation of the joint IGU/ICA Commission on Toponymy, S-G Meadows will represent the IGU and attend the opening day of the congress on behalf of the IGU.

International Geographical Congresses and IGU Regional Conferences Cologne, International Geographical Congress 2012. Soyez reported on progress with the formal written report of the meeting. Although there have been delays, it is still intended to publish this before the end of the year. Media products are published but remain to be circulated more widely. Kyoto, Japan Regional Conference 2013. Himiyama reported that more than 1400 delegates have thus far registered from 69 countries, more than 600 from Japan. Presentations exceed 1250, many of which are in Commission sessions. Significant external funding has been raised to facilitate the meeting which has several parallel events and exhibitions, including public lectures and a map exhibition. Prince Akishino and his wife will be attending the opening ceremony. Six of the excursions have been confirmed (originally 16 were proposed). A special commemorative publication, published by Springer, has unfortunately not been published in time but will be available early in 2014. The official report of the Conference is scheduled for distribution in September 2013. Members of the Kyoto Regional Conference Local Organising Committee attended for further discussion of this item.

Krakow, Poland Regional Conference 2014. President Kolossov reported on the visit that he and S-G Meadows had made to the conference venue in May 2013. The second circular is being distributed at the Kyoto conference. The venue is at the new campus of the Jagellonian University and, although this is on the outskirts of the city, free public transport is being arranged for the delegates. Everything is going to plan and the meeting promises to be a successful one. The MoU is to be co-signed shortly. Moscow, Russia Regional Conference 2015. Dates are confirmed for 17th to 21st August 2015. A short video will be shown at the Kyoto closing ceremony and the first circular will be distributed and a more comprehensive version is planned. The intention is to make the scientific programme as varied as possible, including a special event for school teachers and a special session on teaching geography at University. The main venue is confirmed as Moscow State University. Field excursions are planned to, for example, St Petersburg, the ‘Golden Ring’, the Volga River and Kiev, as well as one-day excursions within the city. Beijing, China International Geographical Congress 2016. VP Qin reported that dates are now confirmed by the LOC as 21st to 25th August 2016 (note the change), at the National Conference Centre, around which there is a good range of hotels, restaurants and other facilities. The Scientific Programme Committee is under construction and wishes to incorporate members from the IGU EC meeting. Attempts are underway to minimize the cost of registration. Regional Conference 2018 invitations: Lima and Taipei. Former VP Alcantara-Ayala attended the EGAL meeting with a view to establishing the viability of their holding a regional conference and had reported positively. The original China-Taipei proposal has been withdrawn;, the Peruvian National Committee is to be invited to submit a revised and complete proposal (Kolossov, Meadows). International Geographical Congress 2020. Dr Barbaros Gönençgil attended the meeting for this item and circulated notes updating the EC on progress. Letters of support have now been received from more than 30 academic departments in Turkey as well other interdisciplinary bodies. The venue and dates are not yet finalized but a date of 10th to 15th August has been tentatively proposed. There is a strong desire to hold it at university premises and keep registration fees as low as possible. Extraordinary 2022 International Geographical Congress. Possible hosts need to be approached by the appointed Task Force so that developments can be discussed at the next EC meeting. International Geographical Congress 2024. There has been a tentative approach from a company in Vancouver regarding a possible bid but, given that any formal approach must come directly from Canadian Geographers, the President was requested to write to the Chair of the Canadian National IGU Committee (Kolossov).

Honors and Awards Honors and Awards Committee. All proposed members of the newly established committee have accepted their invitations. It was agreed to invite Jan Monk to chair the committee.

IGU Planet and Humanity Medal. EC members were again encouraged to consider possible worthy recipients with outstanding global reputations in the field. Suggestions were made as to possible nominations that can be conveyed to the Honors and Awards Committee for their consideration with appropriate timing. Mattei Dogan Prize for Human Geography. A nomination has been made to the ISSC but there has been no response as yet. The status of the IGU Mattei Dogan prize remains to be established (Kolossov, Abler). IGU Lauréat d’Honneur. The nominated candidate is present in Kyoto and the award conferred at the closing ceremony. The recipient, Professor Ton Dietz, accepted the award and made the remarks attached to the minutes as Appendix 1.

Other Business It was agreed to have a brief EC review session ahead of the Kyoto Regional Meeting Closing Ceremony on Friday 9th August at 08h30 in the EC meeting room at the conference venue. EC Members agreed to sign the petition protesting the recent decision by the Russian Government to reform the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Adjourn The meeting adjourned at 12h30 on Sunday 4th August 2013. Appendix 1: Speech by Professor Ton Dietz in acceptance of the IGU Lauréat d’Honneur, presented at the closing ceremony of the Kyoto Regional Conference, 9th August 2013. Dear colleagues Currently I am director of an area studies institute, the African Studies Centre in Leiden, in my home country, the Netherlands. I am doing that as a geographer: trained to connect different perspectives, different levels of scale, different paradigms and being holistic. I am most grateful to the world organization of geographers to honour me with this laureat d’honneur. Some years ago, I have been serving the IGU for a period of eight years as the Country representative from the Netherlands. And after that I was active in two capacities, which are both important to strengthen global geography as a relevant discipline, I think. So let me give you my brief thoughts about those two IGU projects. The first one has to do with publication cultures. When I started my career as an academic geographer, as a student in Nijmegen and as a young lecturer at the University of Amsterdam, many Dutch geographers were still teaching and writing in Dutch, and as students we had to read a lot of books and journal articles, in many languages: my own native language, but also French, German and English and some of us even went beyond that. That was in the 1970s. Now, forty years later, geographers who want to climb the academic ladder only seem to be able to do so if they publish one article after another in so-called top-level journals in English. The inventory of geographical journals that I have assisted in setting up and that can be found on the IGU website, shows that there are many, many more relevant journals in our discipline and sub-disciplines, and that many of those are not in English and do not seem to get academic recognition in circles who decide about academic careers. Geography has to play a key role in national education, in regional planning and in environmental governance, where

academic knowledge merges with other types of knowledges. But if geographers turn their back to these stakeholders, who are mostly using their national language, geography itself will wither away. IGU HAS to play a role, I think, in fighting against the ever-growing monopoly of knowledge dissemination by commercial publication firms in the English-speaking world. The second project is even more important, I think. In my country there is an almost complete split between physical geography and human or socio-economic geography. As a result Dutch geographers and geography institutes have largely missed the opportunities of playing key roles in environmental issues. This is true for big global issues like climate change and biodiversity conservation. But it is also true for all those issues that you can connect with sustainable cities. Elsewhere, and in IGU, physical and human geographers are still together. But also there many of the eye-catching scholars dealing with global and urban environmental issues are not geographers. They are biologists or historians or economists. For many years now I have been trying, with some dedicated colleagues, to re-engage geography, a joint geography, with these big environmental issues. Thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of some Chinese colleagues, two of whom are here today as well, the website Our Sustainable Cities (oursus.org) can become a powerful tool for this reengagement. And it could also develop into a tool for IGU to lead a global movement of inspiration for our sustainable cities, sharing insights, and connecting to relevant key players in business and policy communities, and, through social media, with the general public and the youth in particular. Please join us! Crossing boundaries and connecting people and ideas for inclusive and sustainable development in this world of ours: that is what geographers can and should do! Let me end with a few words of appreciation. I would like to share this great honour with all those geographers and others who have prepared me for this academic prize. I would particularly like to thank my teachers and colleagues at the University of Amsterdam, including my wife Annemieke, who was trained as a geographer as well. Okini! Arigado! Dank! Appendix 2: OurSus Summary; report by Aharon Kellerman 20130809 Current status: The project is now half-way in its way to full functioning. Beginning in 2010, the project has now a full double Internet infrastructure, in English and Chinese. There are numerous cities presented on the websites and many academics and professionals making use of it, albeit still mainly from China. Future plans: The project will reach full maturity in 2016 towards the IGC in Beijing, China. By then, it will have a wide and internationally balanced representation of both cities and users. Furthermore, it is expected that by then that the business component will yield income to the IGU, for assisting scholars from developing countries wishing to take part in IGU activities. 'Internal' challenges: By this we refer to challenges within the global geography community. There is a pressing need to mobilize geographers worldwide to join the project, whether as presenters of cities and/or as experts. It was suggested that you will approach the relevant commission chairs and even suggest to them that the project will become also a commission project. I let the commission chairs know about your upcoming request in the commission chairs' meeting which followed the OurSus session. It was further suggested that you approach the chairs of the national committees, attempting to establish national commissions in liaison of the

project. You may also wish to consider the establishment of an international steering committee for the project. 'External' challenges: By this we refer to the relationships between the project and the business community, which awaits development. Given the Chinese rather mature use of the project, it was suggested that the efforts made so far to attract Chinese businesses will continue, eventually leading to efforts directed to companies in other parts of the world.

The EC reconvened on Friday 9th August 2013 in order to receive reports on IGU activities and special sessions at the Kyoto Regional Conference. The meeting was chaired by President Vladimir Kolossov, who welcomed Secretary-General Mike Meadows and Vice-Presidents Ron Abler, Dietrich Soyez, RB Singh, Joos Droogleever-Fortuijn, Yukio Himiyama and Jarkko Saarinen. President Kolossov congratulated VP Abler on his award and Honorary Membership of the Kyoto Geographical Society and presented him with a small memento on behalf of the Executive Committee. Commission Chairs Meeting. SG Meadows will send out a request for Annual Reports from Commissions (and Olympiad Task Force) in the next few weeks; EC members are encouraged to reinforce contact with their respective Commissions at this time. The San Francisco declaration was endorsed and this can now be signed by the President on behalf of the EC. The text of the declaration, indicating that the EC has endorsed this, is also to be circulated to Commission and National Committee chairs. The idea of a Commission prize was positively received and a draft of the criteria document will be circulated by SG Meadows. Santiago Regional Conference 2018. SG Meadows and VP Bellezza met briefly with the Chair of the Local Organising Committee, Juan Manuel Delgado Estrada, and clarified what is required for the submission of a final bid document. EC Calendar. President Kolossov presented plans for the next EC meeting that would involve an extended excursion to Suzdal and that this would involve an additional day over and above the usual four days in total. The schedule would involve arrivals on 26th April 2014, departures from late on 30th April 2014. It is suggested that each VP prepare a short written report ahead of this meeting. IGU Publications. The journals session was well attended. Several issues emerged in discussion. The idea of using the IGU website for pre-publications and open review for manuscripts was discussed. VPs Kellerman, Abler, Bellezza, Soyez and SG Meadows to explore this issue further. The journals paper session had been well attended. The co-authors of the paper are requested to provide a one page abstract of their paper for wider circulation. OurSus. VP Kellerman provided a summary of the meeting and this is attached to the minutes as Appendix 1. A letter to National Committee and selected Committee chairs to be drafted (Kolossov) updating them on the initiative, including a pdf version of the flyer that was circulated at the meeting. IYGU. There is an urgent need for Chairs to contact their respective national UNESCO representatives and the letter requesting this should be co-signed by President Kolosov and Benno Werlen. The EC urges Werlen to ensure that there is adequate representation in the committee structure of IYGU. Academic Teaching. Several good suggestions have emerged from the special session, including the possibility of developing expert groups of peers or mentors for young scholars, resources in

relation to didactics and curriculum, to be made available on the website, running didactic training courses during IGU Conferences and Congresses. VP Droogleever-Fortuijn will take the issue forward with Joop van der Schee. Homo Sapiens Foundation. This organisation is urging the IGU to sign the ‘1 Atmosphere’ declaration. Further information is needed before an endorsement is possible. Academica Sinica is seeking nominations for a major new prize, the Tang Prize in ‘Sustainable Development’. EC members are requested to consider possible nominees and inform the chair by the end of August to facilitate completing the necessary documentation ahead of the closing date. IGU Archives follow-up. Decisions need to be made regarding the manner in which IGU archives are collected (for example, voluntary or compulsory). Further feedback will be available following VP Soyez’ visit to Leipzig.

Organisation et fonctionnement Travaux des Commissions, Liaisons et Adhésions. Le Président Kolossov a demandé des suggestions quant à la façon de structurer la réunion prévue avec les présidents de commissions (et les présidents des Comités Nationaux) pendant la Conférence régionale de Kyôto. Les suggestions avancées incluent la question des frais d'inscription aux conférences UGI, la communication et la coopération avec et entre les commissions, y compris une éventuelle implication dans des initiatives telles que “Terre Future”, des projets de recherche communs financés par des organismes majeurs (exemple de l’attribution de financement Marie Curie à la Commission Méditerranée), la possibilité d'un «prix d'excellence», des incitations pour les commissions qui réalisent au mieux les objectifs de l’UGI ou augmentent les adhésions, et une possible réduction des frais d'inscription pour les présidents de commissions qui organisent des sessions lors des conférences et congrès UGI. Le Cap, Afrique du Sud: Novembre 2014 (dates exactes à confirmer avec les nouveaux membres du Comité Exécutif après l'élection UGI 2014, mais la seconde moitié du mois est souhaitable).

Rapport sur l'adhésion de pays à l’UGI. Les rappels de cotisations pour 2013 ont été envoyés et les adhésions continuent à être créditées, de sorte que la situation des revenus pour cette année devrait être approximativement la même que les années précédentes. Le Secrétaire Général Meadows demandé de l'aide de membres du Comité Exécutif pour les adhésions de pays quand c’est nécessaire. Il y a eu quelques succès pour le renouvellement d’adhésions de certains pays (Pakistan, Ghana) et des communications encourageantes avec des représentants de pays «nouveaux» (Serbie) ou d’anciens pays membres (Vietnam, Colombie). Il a été convenu de redoubler d'efforts stimulant l'UGI en Afrique à travers une conférence régionale et la création d'un réseau régional (Meadows, Soyez). Les possibilités de financement pour cela pourraient inclure le CODESRIA (Conseil pour le développement de la recherche en sciences sociales en Afrique, basé à Dakar). Il a été décidé de mettre à disposition la liste des adresses e-mail «africaines» pour faciliter une plus large diffusion de la e-newsletter de géographes africains (Meadows, Bellezza). UGI . Rapport financier et Projections. Meadows a de nouveau indiqué que la situation financière de l'UGI reste solide même si elle doit être surveillée attentivement étant donné que nous sommes actuellement dans un cycle de conférences régionales annuelles avec des engagements de subvention de déplacements, aussi avec l'augmentation du niveau de financement annuel à l’IYGU. Le vice-président Abler a noté que 5000 Euros du produit du Congrès UGI de Cologne ont été versés au Fonds de dotation, dont le solde dépasse 36000 dollars US (même si les taux d'intérêt sont très faibles et s’il est nécessaire de trouver un moyen plus efficace d'investir ce montant). Les moyens d'accroître le financement de l’UGI ont été discutés brièvement, mais il a été convenu qu’un accroissement des tarifs d’adhésion, à ce stade, ne serait probablement pas bien reçu par les Comités Nationaux. Brochure et Manuel de l’UGI. Les copies numériques de la brochure publicitaire ont été distribuées et des exemplaires imprimés seront disponibles à la Conférence régionale de Kyôto; Meadows enverra une version haute résolution à tous les membres du Comité Exécutif pour

distribution selon les besoins. Il a été accepté que le projet de texte révisé du manuel soit disponible pour la prochaine réunion du Comité Exécutif (Abler). Publications de l’UGI. Une session spéciale sur cette question est prévue lors de la conférence de Kyôto. Le vice-président Saarinen fait un rapport sur les discussions qu'il a tenues lors de la récente conférence des géographes nordiques autour de la possibilité d'une revue de l’UGI en ligne. Les géographes physiciens, en particulier, ont quelques doutes en raison de problèmes d'accréditation ISI. Il y a clairement beaucoup de défis et la session extraordinaire, on l'espère, sera l’occasion de proposer des moyens d’aller de l'avant. Déclaration de San Francisco. Il y a un besoin évident de structures de soutien pour se développer dans d'autres pays pour que l'initiative puisse se diffuser plus loin; il y a un plan pour inclure au moins une ville japonaise en association avec la Conférence régionale de Kyôto. Une session spéciale de la conférence est consacrée à l'initiative. Expansion de l’UGI. L'UGI n’a qu’une empreinte limitée. Le vice-président Kellerman a rappelé des initiatives visant à améliorer les contact avec, par exemple, la Royal Geographic Society (RGS) et l’Association of American Geographers (AAG), et l’encouragement aux commissions pour doubler leurs adhésions. Plus il y aura de gens qui connaissent l'UGI, plus ils seront susceptibles de vouloir participer à nos activités. Les membres du Comité Exécutif devraient aborder les responsables des associations géographiques nationales compétentes ou les sociétés de géographie pour leur demander de placer un lien vers l'UGI sur leurs sites Web. Il est nécessaire d'assurer le suivi des contacts individuels que les membres du Comité Exécutif peuvent avoir (Tous). Le Comité Local d’Organisation de Kyôto est invité à le faire conjointement avec le président Kolossov pour faciliter davantage la diffusion des resources de l'UGI (Meadows). Réseaux régionaux UGI, YES. Singh a rendu compte des efforts régionaux pour inviter des participants d'autres pays asiatiques à des réunions accréditées par l’UGI qui ont lieu, généralement chaque année, en Inde, ainsi que pour les inviter à participer à la conférence nationale annuelle. La réunion EGAL (Encuentro de Geógrafos de América Latina) au Pérou a été suivie par Alcantara-Ayala et, bien que séparément de l'UGI, il y a des indications d'un réseau actif de géographes en Amérique latine. Delgado-Estrada participe à la réunion de Kyôto et peut être abordé individuellement pour commentaires. Il existe un organisme Asie de l'Est qui se réunit en association avec la Conférence régionale de Kyôto, mais n'est pas officiellement affilié à l'UGI. Le réseau UGI des anciens pays de l'Union Soviétique reste actif et il y a une prochaine réunion en Octobre au Kazakhstan. Wang Meng, président du Réseau de Jeunes Chercheurs de la Terre (YES, Young Earth Scientists) a participé à la discussion de ce réseau particulier. Il a présenté YES comme un héritage de l'AIPT (Année Internationale de la Planète Terre). YES est un réseau de

géoscientifiques en début de carrière avec 3000 membres de moins de 35 ans dans 121 pays et une participation substantielle de l'Afrique du Sud. Le prochain congrès aura lieu en Tanzanie en Juillet 2014 et il y a beaucoup d'autres initiatives et projets en cours. Wang a suggéré la possibilité d'un «jeune section» pour l'UGI et a offert son aide pour l'établissement d'une telle structure – ce qui est clairement en phase avec l'une des principales priorités actuelles de l'UGI – éventuellement par la création d’un nouveau groupe de travail UGI “jeunes chercheurs”. Il a été convenu que l'UGI devrait être représentée au congrès YES en Tanzanie en 2014. Sesquicentennial et Groupe de travail du Centenaire. Abler a déposé le document qui identifie la liste des membres possibles du Groupe de Travail et a rédigé une lettre d'invitation qui doit être envoyée par le président Kolossov. La question de savoir comment mettre cela en route a été posée, ainsi que la localisation la plus pertinente possible. Il a été convenu que la Conférence régionale de Cracovie doit être l’occasion de le faire et les invitations à assister à cette réunion devraient être envoyées aux dix membres initiaux. En plus du Congrès 2022, le Groupe de travail devrait être encouragé à développer d'autres souvenirs spéciaux (une publication documentant l'histoire de l'UGI par exemple). Sur ce point, il serait souhaitable d'avoir des photographies disponibles des réunions du Comité Exécutif, des Conférence et des Congrès ede l’UGI, et les membres du Comité Exécutif sont encouragés à soumettre des documents aux archives via le Secrétaire Général (Tous). Site web de l’UGI et réseautage social. Le re-conception du site est en cours et devrait être lancée avant la fin de l'année. La page Facebook de l'UGI fonctionne et un lien vers le site web est en construction (Meadows). Bulletin de l’UGI. Meadows a déposé le volume récemment publié (61-62) du Bulletin de l’UGI, représentant les années 2011-12. Les prochains numéros reviendront à un format annuel du volume. ONU-IYGU (International Year of Global Understanding). Benno Werlen a assisté à la réunion pour ce point et rendu compte des activités récentes. Il a fait une présentation soulignant les principaux développements. Un nouveau jalon a été atteint alors que le Rwanda a accepté de soumettre le projet de résolution IYGU au Conseil exécutif de l'UNESCO via des pays membres appropriés. Le niveau de soutien des grandes organisations scientifiques mondiales est assuré par le CIUS, le CISS et CIHPS et par ce biais dispose d’une couverture véritablement mondiale. Les Centres d'action régionaux (de plusieurs types possibles) sont proposés; 12 localités sont envisagées et sont soit confirmées (Beijing, Kigali) soit en cours. Le but d’IYGU a été présenté comme “365 contributions à la durabilité mondiale” avec trois niveaux d'action: la recherche, l'éducation, la communication. Un certain nombre de manifestations sont prévues, y compris les “lancements globaux”. Les problèmes de copyright concernant le logo sont à l'étude. Werlen a également parlé du projet TIERS (Transdisciplinary Intercultural Ecological Research for Sustainability) don't les Actes ont été professionnellement éditées dans un livre de 180-200 pages qui devrait être publié très prochainement. Un financement est nécessaire pour subventionner la publication et il a été convenu que le Président devrait encore approcher les GéoUnions pour une contribution à IYGU dans cet état d'esprit. Mise à jour de la e-newsletter de l’UGI. Le bulletin d'information joue un rôle essentiel dans la communication à la communauté plus large des géographes. Si le projet de procès-verbal de cette réunion en cours peut être rapidement transmis pour approbation, il sera alors possible de l’inclure dans le prochain bulletin (Meadows). Archives UGI. Le protocole d'accord a été officiellement signé par les deux parties et grâce une intervention significative du vice-président Bellezza, les archives UGI ont été transférés à Leipzig où des travaux sont en cours pour leur conservation. Les archivistes de Leipzig ont été en mesure

d'évaluer la nature des documents d'archives et ont fait des suggestions constructives quant à la nécessité d'établir une approche plus professionnelle de la collecte et du classement des documents à l'avenir. Le vice-président Abler a signalé que certains documents d'archives de l'UGI avant 1950 ont été enregistrés par la Royal Geographical Society et sont peut-être irrécupérables désormais. Le vice-président Bellezza a accepté d'écrire à Lentz et Soyez pour décrire plus en détail la nature des ressources transférées. Il a également été convenu que Soyez devrait visiter Leipzig avant la prochaine réunion du Comité Exécutif pour discuter directement avec les archivistes de la façon dont les matériaux peuvent être mieux préparés à l'avenir pour l'archivage (Soyez). Projet Dialogues. Le Secrétaire Général Meadows a reçu des copies des interviews vidéo de la bibliothèque de l'Université de Lund et prévoit de les rendre disponibles via le site Web de l'UGI quand il en aura le temps.

UGI et enseignement académique de la géographie. La vice-présidente Droogleever-Fortuijn a indiqué qu'une session extraordinaire par rapport à cette nouvelle initiative aura lieu à la Conférence régionale de Kyôto. Il a en outre suggéré que l'UGI devrait envisager d'élaborer une planification stratégique à long terme, par exemple vers 2022, et il fera parvenir une demande officielle aux membres du Comité Exécutif (Kolossov).

Coopérations et opérations de sensibilisation Festival International de Géographie. Soyez participera au prochain Festival en Octobre et présentera une conférence en tant que représentant officiel de l'UGI. Il a été suggéré que Soyez demande au comité d'organisation de St Dié de veiller à ce qu’à partir de 2014 la communauté géographique du «pays invité» choisi soit correctement informée de la décision par contact avec le Comité National UGI du pays lorsque c’est possible. Il est sans nouvelles de la proposition de Christian Pierret de créer une école de géographie appliquée à St Dié. Représentants de l’UGI dans les instances internationales. L’UGI compte maintenant des représentants officiels dans plusieurs organismes scientifiques internationaux. L’ancienne vice-présidente Fincher a été re-nominée au Comité Exécutif du CISS (Comité International des Sciences Sociales) avec une décision attendue à l'Assemblée générale à Montréal, en Octobre 2013. Karen O'Brien (nominée par l’UGI) et le vice-président Qin Dahe ont été élus au Comité scientifique du programme “Terre Future” de l’ICSU-CIUS (Conseil International des Unions Scientifiques). Etienne Nel est le candidat UGI au CROP (Comparative Research Programme on Poverty) et a rapporté brièvement sur les activités de ce comité sur la reformulation des Objectifs du Millénaire pour le développement et le développement de nouveaux indicateurs de la pauvreté. Le Professeur Haruyama a été nommé par l'UGI pour siéger au comité scientifique de l’IRDR (Integrated Research on Disaster Risk) et le résultat de cette nomination est attendu. CIUS, “Terre Future” et les questions de sciences de la Terre. Le Président Kolossov, le Secrétaire Général Meadows et le vice-président Abler ont assisté à la dernière réunion des GéoUnions à Paris, en Avril, avant la réunion des unions de l’ICSU. Le procès-verbal de cette

réunion a été déposé et il a été noté que les relations entre l'UGI et les autres GéoUnions reste cordiale et positive. “Terre Future” (ICSU) reste une occasion très intéressante pour les géographes de contribuer à la science mondiale. L’UGI a accepté de contribuer à la publication du projet VALID (The Value of Geo-Information for Disaster and Risk Management) de l’ISPRS (International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing) sur le risque de catastrophe; l’Union Géodésique et Géophysique Internationale (IUGG) développe une initiative pour une Année internationale des deltas et il a été convenu de la soutenir. Sur la question de la pertinence des Sciences de la Terre pour les géoparcs, le vice-président Singh a indiqué que le premier numéro de la Revue Internationale sur le Géopatrimoine (International Journal of Geoheritage) a été publié avec des contributions de membres du Comité Exécutife. Bellezza est également le contact avec De Mulder, qui a demandé si l'UGI a pris une décision, après la réunion de Rohtak, pour devenir membre de la Fondation. Mais une contribution financière à l'ESM ne semble pas possible à ce stade. À propos des Géoparcs, Bellezza est en contact avec Dongying Wei, président de la Commission relative à cette question, pour étudier la possibilité d'organiser en marge du Congrès de Beijing, l'Olympiade Géographique dans un géoparc à proximité, et également la réunion du Comité Exécutif. CISS. Les informations sont reçues régulièrement sur les activités de CISS, et l'ancienne vice-présidente de Fincher avait présenté un bref rapport. L’UGI sera représentée lors de la prochaine Assemblée générale à Montréal par le président Kolossov et le vice-président Kellerman. Le Forum Mondial des Sciences Sociales a lieu en association avec l’Assemblée générale, plusieurs géographes présentent des posters. Le rapport sur les sciences sociales dans le monde comprend des contributions sur divers aspects de la géographie compilés par le Président Kolossov et le Secrétaire Général Meadows. Affiliation avec d'autres organisations. Le Président Kolossov a encouragé les membres du Comité Exécutif à rester actifs comme personnes de contact avec les organisations extérieures, et pour essayer de faciliter les activités conjointes, le cas échéant. En ce qui concerne l'UNESCO, l'ALECSO, l'UNU et la TWAS il n'y a rien à signaler. Une association affiliée de l'UGGI, l’IAG (Association Internationale de Géodésie), tient sa réunion du 150e anniversaire à Potsdam au début de Septembre et Soyez y représentera l'UGI. EUROGEO/EUGEO. Le Président Kolossov et Bellezza assisteront à la réunion annuelle d’EUROGEO à Rome en Septembre. Il y aura des représentants d’EUGEO; les représentants de l’UGI tenteront de faciliter de meilleures relations entre les deux organisations. ICA (Association Internationale de Cartographie). L'ICA a prévu de tenir son prochain Congrès en Allemagne à la fin Août, il est jugé important que l'UGI consolide ses relations avec les cartographes et, en plus de la participation de l'UGI / ICA la Commission conjointe sur la toponymie, le Secrétaire Général Meadows représentera l'UGI et assistera à la journée d'ouverture du congrès au nom de l'UGI.

Congrès Internationaux de Géographie et Conférences régionales de l’UGI Cologne, Allemagne, Congrès Géographique International 2012. Soyez a rendu compte des progrès avec le rapport écrit officiel de la réunion. Bien qu'il y ait eu des retards, il est encore prévu de le publier avant la fin de l'année. Des produits médiatiques sont publiées mais restent à diffuser plus largement. Kyôto, Japon, Conférence Régionale 2013. Himiyama rapporte que plus de 1400 délégués de 69 pays sont déjà inscrits, dont plus de 600 Japonais. Les présentations dépassent 1250, dont la plupart sont dans les sessions de Commissions. Un financement externe important a été obtenu

pour faciliter la réunion, qui comprend plusieurs événements et expositions parallèles, y compris des conférences publiques et une exposition de cartes. Le prince Akishino et son épouse participeront à la cérémonie d'ouverture. Six excursions ont été confirmées (à l'origine 16 ont été proposées). Une publication commémorative spéciale, publiée par Springer, n'a malheureusement pas pu être publiée à temps, mais sera disponible début 2014. Le rapport officiel de la Conférence est prévu pour distribution en Septembre 2013. Des membres du Comité Local d’Organisation de la Conférence Régionale de Kyoto ont participé à la discussion de ce point. Cracovie, Pologne, Conférence Régionale 2014. Le Président Kolossov fait un rapport sur sa visite en Mai 2013, avec le Secrétaire Général Meadows, sur le site de la conférence. La deuxième circulaire est distribuée lors de la conférence de Kyôto. Le site est sur le nouveau campus de l'Université Jagellon et, bien que ce soit en périphérie de la ville, un transport public gratuit est organisé pour les délégués. Tout se passe comme prévu et la rencontre promet d'être un succès. Le protocole d'accord doit être co-signé prochainement. Moscou, Russie, Conférence Régionale 2015. Les dates sont confirmées du 17 au 21 Août 2015. Une courte vidéo sera présentéee lors de la cérémonie de clôture de Kyôto, la première circulaire sera distribuée et une version plus complète est prévue. L'intention est de rendre le programme scientifique aussi varié que possible, y compris un événement spécial pour les enseignants et une session spéciale sur l'enseignement de la géographie à l'Université. Le site principale est confirmé à l'Université d'Etat de Moscou. Des excursions sur le terrain sont prévues à Saint-Pétersbourg, dans l’“Anneau d’Or”, sur la Volga et à Kiev, ainsi que des excursions d'une journée dans la ville de Moscou. Beijing, Chine, Congrès Géographique International 2016. Le VP Qin a indiqué que les dates sont maintenant confirmées par le Comité d’organisation local, du 21 au 25 août 2016 (noter le changement), au Centre national des conférences, autour duquel il y a une bonne gamme d'hôtels, de restaurants et autres installations. Le Comité du programme scientifique est en cours de construction et souhaite intégrer les membres de la réunion du Comité Exécutif de l'UGI. Des tentatives sont en cours pour réduire le coût des inscriptions. Invitations pour la Conférence Régionale de 2018 : Lima et Taipei. L’ex-vice-présidente Alcantara-Ayala a assisté à la réunion EGAL en vue d'établir la viabilité de la tenue d'une conférence régionale et elle a émis un avis positif. La proposition originelle de la Chine-Taipei a été retirée; le Comité national péruvien est invité à soumettre une proposition révisée et complète (Kolossov, Meadows). Istanbul, Turquie, Congrès Géographique International 2020. Le Dr. Barbaros Gönençgil a assisté à la réunion pour ce point et distribué des notes de mise à jour sur les progrès accomplis. Des lettres de soutien ont été reçues de plus de 30 départements universitaires en Turquie ainsi que d'autres organismes interdisciplinaires. Le lieu et les dates ne sont pas encore finalisés, mais la période du 10 au 15 Août a été provisoirement proposée. Il y a un fort désir de tenir le Congrès dans les locaux de l'université et de garder les frais d'inscription aussi bas que possible. Congrès Géographique International Extraordinaire 2022 Des sites possibles d’acueil doivent être examinés par le groupe de travail et les développements peuvent être discutés lors de la prochaine réunion du Comité Exécutif. Congrès Géographique International 2024 Il y a eu une tentative d'approche d'une entreprise à Vancouver en ce qui concerne une éventuelle candidature mais, étant donné que toute approche formelle doit venir directement de géographes canadiens, le Président a été invité à écrire au président de la Commission nationale canadienne de l’UGI (Kolossov).

Distinctions et prix Comité des prix et honneurs. Tous les membres proposés du comité nouvellement créé ont accepté leurs invitations. Il a été convenu d'inviter Jan Monk à la présidence du comité. Médaille Planète et Humanité de l’UGI. Les membres du Comité Exécutif ont de nouveau été encouragés à envisager d'éventuels récipiendaires de réputation mondiale dans le domaine. Des suggestions ont été faites quant aux nominations possibles qui peuvent être transmises au Comité des prix et honneurs. apour considération en temps voulu. Prix Mattei Dogan pour la géographie humaine. Une proposition a été faite pour le CISS, mais il n'y a pas eu de réponse encore. Le statut du prix Mattei Dogan de l'UGI reste à établir (Kolossov, Abler). Lauréat d’Honneur de l’UGI. Le candidat proposé est présent à Kyôto et le prix lui sera remis lors de la cérémonie de clôture. Le lauréat, le professeur Ton Dietz, a accepté le prix et a prononcé les remarques jointes à ce procès verbal (annexe 1).

Autres points Il a été convenu d'avoir une brève session d'examen du Conseil Exécutif avant la cérémonie de clôture de la Conférence régionale de Kyôto, le vendredi 9 Août à 8 h 30 dans la salle de réunion du CE sur le site de la conférence. Les membres du CE ont accepté de signer la pétition qui proteste contre la récente décision du gouvernement russe de réformer l'Académie des Sciences de Russie.

Ajournement La séance est levée à 12h30 le dimanche 4 Août 2013.

SUITE La CE s’est à nouveau réuni le vendredi 9 Août 2013 afin de recevoir des rapports sur les activités de l'UGI et les sessions extraordinaires de la Conférence régionale de Kyôto. La réunion était présidée par le président Vladimir Kolossov, qui a accueilli le Secrétaire général Mike Meadows et les vice-présidents Ron Abler, Dietrich Soyez, RB Singh, Joos Droogleever-Fortuijn, Yukio Himiyama et Jarkko Saarinen. Le président Kolossov a félicité le VP Abler sur sa récompense et sa nomination comme membre honoraire de la Société Géographique de Kyôto et lui a remis un petit souvenir au nom du Comité Exécutif. Réunion des présidents de Commissions. Le Secrétaire Général Meadows enverra dans les prochaines semaines une demande de rapports annuels des commissions (et du groupe de travail Olympiade), les membres du CE sont encouragés à renforcer les contacts avec leurs commissions respectives à ce moment-là. La déclaration de San Francisco a été approuvée, et peut maintenant être signée par le Président au nom du CE. Le texte de la déclaration, indiquant que le CE l’a approuvé, doit également être diffusé auprès des présidents de commissions et de comités nationaux. L'idée d'un prix de Commission a été accueillie favorablement et un projet de document sur les critères sera distribué par Meadows.

Conférence régionale de Santiago 2018. Le SG Meadows et le VP Bellezza ont brièvement rencontré le président du Comité d'organisation local, Juan Manuel Delgado Estrada, pour clarifier ce qui est requis pour la présentation d'un document d'offre finale. Calendrier du Comité Exécutif. Le Président Kolossov a présenté des plans pour la prochaine réunion du CE qui impliqueraient une excursion prolongée à Souzdal, avec une journée supplémentaire au-delà des quatre jours habituels. La session sur les revues a été bien suivie. Plusieurs questions ont émergé des discussions. L'idée d'utiliser le site Web de l'UGI pour les pré-publications et l'examen ouvert des manuscrits a été discutée. Les vice-présidents Kellerman, Abler, Bellezza et Soyez, et le Secrétaire Général Meadows vont approfondir cette question. La session de communications sur les revues a été bien suivie. Les co-auteurs sont priés de fournir un résumé d’une page de leur communication pour une plus large diffusion. OurSus. Les membres du CE sont invités à examiner les candidatures possibles et à informer le président avant la fin Août pour pouvoir remplir les documents nécessaires avant la date de clôture. Suivi des Archives de l’UGI. Des décisions doivent être prises concernant la manière dont les archives UGI sont collectées (par exemple, volontaire ou obligatoire). En outre un retour sera disponible après la visite du VP Soyez à Leipzig. Annexe 1: Discours du Professeur Ton Dietz pour l'acceptation du Lauréat d'honneur UGI, présenté lors de la cérémonie de clôture de la Conférence régionale de Kyôto, le 9 Août 2013. Chers collègues. Actuellement, je suis directeur d'un institut d'études régionales, le Centre d'études africaines de Leiden, dans mon pays d'origine, les Pays-Bas. Je le fais en tant que géographe: formé pour relier différents points de vue, des différents niveaux d'échelle, différents paradigmes et en ayant une approche holistique. Je suis très reconnaissant à l'organisation mondiale des géographes de

m'honorer de ce “lauréat d'honneur”. Il y a quelques années, j'ai été au service de l’UGI pour une période de huit ans en tant que représentant national des Pays-Bas. Et après cela, j'ai été actif en deux capacités, qui sont toutes deux importantes pour renforcer la géographie mondiale comme une discipline pertinente, je pense. Alors permettez-moi de vous donner mes brèves réflexions sur ces deux projets UGI. Le premier concerne les cultures de publication. Quand j'ai commencé ma carrière en tant que géographe universitaire, étudiant à Nimègue et jeune maître de conférences à l'Université d'Amsterdam, de nombreux géographes hollandais ont toujours enseigné et écrit en néerlandais, et comme étudiants nous avons dû lire beaucoup de livres et d’articles de revues, en plusieurs langues: ma propre langue maternelle, mais aussi le français, l'allemand et l'anglais. Certains d'entre nous sont même allés au-delà. C'était dans les années 1970. Maintenant, quarante ans plus tard, les géographes qui veulent gravir les échelons universitaires ne semblent être en mesure de le faire que s'ils publient un article après l'autre dans ce qu'on appelle des revues de haut niveau en anglais. L'inventaire des revues de géographie que j'ai aidé à mettre en place et qui peut être trouvé sur le site UGI, montre qu'il y a bien davantage de revues pertinentes dans notre discipline et sous-disciplines, et que beaucoup de ceux qui ne sont pas en anglais ne semblent pas obtenir la reconnaissance académique dans les milieux qui décident des carrières académiques. La géographie doit jouer un rôle clé dans l'éducation nationale, la planification régionale et la gouvernance environnementale, où la connaissance académique fusionne avec d'autres types de savoirs. Mais si les géographes tournent le dos à ces intervenants, qui pour la plupart utilisent leur langue nationale, la géographie elle-même va dépérir. L’UGI a un rôle à jouer, je pense, dans la lutte contre le monopole croissant de la diffusion des connaissances par les entreprises de la publication commerciale dans le monde anglo-saxon. Le deuxième projet est encore plus important, à mon avis. Dans mon pays, il ya une scission presque complète entre géographie physique et géographie humaine ou socio-économique. En conséquence les géographes hollandais et les instituts de géographie ont largement manqué les occasions de jouer un rôle clé dans les questions environnementales. Cela est vrai pour les grands problèmes mondiaux comme le changement climatique et la conservation de la biodiversité. Mais c’est également vrai pour toutes les questions relatives aux villes durables. Ailleurs, et au sein de l'UGI, géographes physiques et humaines sont toujours ensemble. Mais il y a aussi de nombreux érudits bien en vue qui traitent des questions environnementales mondiales et urbaines ne sont pas géographes. Ils sont biologistes, historiens ou économistes. Depuis de nombreuses années, j'ai essayé, avec quelques collègues dévoués, de réengager la géographie, une géographie commune, avec ces grands enjeux environnementaux. Grâce à l'enthousiasme et au dévouement de certains collègues chinois, dont deux sont ici aujourd'hui, le site Nos villes durables (oursus.org) peut ainsi devenir un outil puissant pour ce réengagement. Et il pourrait également devenir un outil pour l'UGI pour diriger un mouvement mondial d'inspiration pour nos villes durables, le partage des idées et la connexion aux principaux acteurs concernés dans les entreprises et les collectivités de la politique, et, à travers les médias sociaux, avec le grand public et les jeunes en particulier. S'il vous plaît rejoignez-nous! Traverser les frontières et relier les gens et les idées pour un développement inclusif et durable dans ce monde qui est le nôtre: c'est ce que les géographes peuvent et doivent faire! Permettez-moi de terminer par quelques mots d'appréciation. Je tiens à partager cet honneur avec tous les géographes et d'autres qui m'ont préparé à ce prix académique. Je tiens tout particulièrement à remercier mes professeurs et collègues de l'Université d'Amsterdam, y compris ma femme Annemieke, qui a aussi été formée en tant que géographe. Okini! Arigado! Dank! Annexe 2: Résumé OurSus; rapport Aharon Kellerman, 9 août 2013 Situation actuelle: Le projet est maintenant à mi-chemin dans son plein fonctionnement. Débuté en 2010, le projet a maintenant une infrastructure complète double sur Internet, en anglais et en chinois. Il y a de nombreuses villes présentées sur les sites Web et de nombreux universitaires et les professionnels en font usage, quoique encore principalement de la Chine. Perspectives: Le projet atteindra sa pleine maturité en 2016 pour le Congrès international de Géographie à Beijing, en Chine. D'ici là, il aura une représentation internationale large et équilibrée des villes et des utilisateurs. En outre, il est prévu que d'ici là que la composante de l'entreprise fournira des revenus à l'UGI, pour aider les chercheurs des pays en développement qui souhaitent participer aux activités de l’UGI. Vous pouvez également envisager la création d'un comité de pilotage international pour le projet. Défis «externe»: ce que nous appelons les relations entre le projet et les milieux d'affaires, qui attendent des développement. 3a) AAG ANNUAL CONFERENCE, LOS ANGELES, 9-13 APRIL The Association of American Geographers 2013 Annual Meeting in Los Angeles, 9-13 April, hosted more than 7,300 geographers, GIS specialists, environmental scientists, and other registrants from around the world sharing the very latest in research, policy, and applications in geography, sustainability, and GIScience. Of those attending, thousands, representing approximately one-third of all attendees came from countries other than the USA, which

continues a steady trend toward increased international participation at AAG Meetings. For comparison, the 2006 meeting in Chicago registered approximately 20 percent international attendees, while the 1982 meeting in San Antonio had only 59 international attendees, or 2.8 percent of the registered total.

The largest participation of scholars from outside of the U.S. came from Canada, the UK, Germany, and China, with strong representation among geographers in developing regions. Many others attending from countries such as Austria, Chile, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Ghana, France, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Lebanon, Mexico, New Zealand, Nepal, Pakistan, Qatar, Romania, Spain, Tanzania, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, and many more enriched the intellectual and social events throughout the week-long conference. The AAG Annual Meeting also featured several diversely themed research tracks and special events, many with strong international dimensions. One major themed track focused on Global Urbanization and Symposium on New Geographies of Urban China, with more than 100 sessions during the course of the conference, beginning with the outstanding Opening Presidential Plenary, “Emerging Asias,” organized by AAG President Eric Sheppard.

Audrey Kobayashi's past presidential address "Dialectica Interrupta: The Idea of ‘Race’ in the Discipline of Geography," received a standing ovation, and she also presented this year’s AAG Presidential Achievement Award to Bobby Wilson. Additional distinguished awards, including AAG Honors, were conveyed during the AAG Awards Luncheon on the final day of the conference. The AAG sponsored an International Reception to celebrate the global character of the conference. Related international events included "Young Leaders Mapping Sustainable Development Challenges: My Community, Our Earth Beyond Rio+20." 45 posters were presented on site, while students in Bolivia, Ghana, Nicaragua, the Philippines and Puerto Rico demonstrated their work through a live Skype video conference. During the Diversity Ambassadors Networking Reception, representatives shared their stories of engaged students and discussed issues pertinent to minority students in higher education. Other themes developed for the Los Angeles meeting included Geography, GIScience, and Health: Spatial Frontiers of Health Research and Practice; Climate Change, Variability, Adaptation and Justice; Activist Geographies: Struggles for Social and Environmental Justice and Geographies of Hope Symposium; Borders; Milestones in Geography Education; CyberGIS Symposium; Land Systems Science Symposium; Spatiotemporal Thinking, Computing and Applications; Geographies of Media; and much more. Wide-ranging plenary addresses were delivered by Jack Dangermond, Esri president; authors Jared Diamond and Charles Mann; Michael T. Jones, Google’s chief technology advocate; Michael Dear, UC-Berkeley; Roger Sayre, USGS; and Gilbert M. Grosvenor, National Geographic.

The above summary represents only a few of the many exciting sessions and international activities that took place at the 2013 AAG Annual Meeting. Numerous other paper, poster, and panel sessions and presentations highlighted geographic work organized by AAG members and AAG Specialty and Affinity Groups. Field trips, workshops, and a special emphasis on Careers in Geography also greatly enriched the experience of AAG conference participants. (all photos by Rebecca Pendergast) 3b) EUROGEO 2013, BRUGES, 8-11 MAY The 2013 European Association of Geographers conference was held on 9-11 May in Bruges Belgium, (Dutch: Brugge), a historic city and the capital of the province of West Flanders.

More than 200 geographers from around the world gathered to explore the role of geography in linking tradition and future. Over 120 presentations were given in the paper sessions that ranged in area from Human, Economic and Cultural Geography to Geographic Information Science, Environmental, Physical and Educational Geography.

Host of the Conference has been the wonderful medieval Belgian city of Bruges

The event was launched at a civic reception hosted by the mayor and held in the magnificent town hall of the city. Delegates also had the opportunity to participate in the ‘Procession of the Holy Blood’, a unique event held each year since 1291 on Ascension Day. The procession represents scenes from the Old and New Testament interpreted by guilds, trades, brotherhoods and chambers of the city. A second part of the procession was devoted to the relic of the blood of Jesus brought to Bruges by Derrick of Alsace, Count of Flanders after the second crusade in 1150.

International attendance of teachers and young graduate students

There were three conference keynote presentations, from Professor Philippe De Maeyer (University of Ghent) on historical cartography, Dr. Sirpa Tani (Helsinki University) who presented her research on youth spaces in cities and Professor Murat Karabulut (Gazi University, Turkey) on his climate research into trends in the Eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey. GIS training workshops as part of the iGuess Project (http://www.iguess.eu) and project meetings also played a significant part in the event.

Map observation, in class rooms and in the field

The association held its Annual meeting and elected a new Presidium to stand for 2013-2015. An exhibition was contributed to by a number of publishers companies and NGOs, as well as several national and international societies including the Russian Geographical Association and the European Association of Young Geographers (EGEA). Representatives from more than 10 other geographical associations also participated. The conference fieldwork visit explored the area that connects Bruges by canal to the North Sea port of Zeebrugge, located about 10 km away. The conference dinner was held in one of the oldest breweries in the city and included a guided tour.

Class room were always very busy time, before the final dinner in an old brewery. Papers from the conference will be published in the autumn as a special issue of EUROGEO’s online journal, the European Journal of Geography (http://www.eurogeographyjournal.eu). The 2014 EUROGEO Conference and meeting will have the theme ‘The Power of Geography and the Role of Spatial Information’. It will be held in Valetta, Malta on 15-17 May 2014. 3c) INTERNATIONAL GEOGRAPHY SYMPOSIUM “GEOMED”, ANTALYA, 10-14 JUNE The 3rd International Geography Symposium (GEOMED 2013) was organized at Antalya, Turkey during 10-13 June, 2013. It was hosted by Dokuz Eylül University. The first and the second symposia were held in 2007 and 2010, respectively, and both attracted a broad participation. The attendance at the third symposium was higher. Around 400 academicians from nearly 55 countries attended the symposium, notable among these being Algeria, Armenia, Australia, Brazil, Egypt, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Libya, Nigeria, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sudan, Ukraine, USA and several European countries. 330 papers covering different geographical topics were presented. Welcome speeches were given by Prof. Dr. h.c. Ibrahim Atalay and Prof. Dr. Abd Alla Gad. Dr. Atalay the Symposium Chairman delivered the opening speech of GEOMED 2013. He stressed the need towards establishing international linkages and partnerships for the promotion of meaningful research and discuss scientific research findings on an international basis, and to improve scientific cooperation. He also stated that the purpose of the symposium is to bring together local and foreign researchers working in the field of geography and all the related topics. Dr. Gad from Egypt presented a report covering the evaluation of two previous International Geography Symposia and their impact on the research collaboration among different countries.

This was followed by two keynote lectures by Prof. Dr. Münir Öztürk from Turkey on “Aromatic and Medicinal Plants in the East Mediterranean & Climate Change” and Prof. Dr. William Mitchell from USA on “A Fifty Year Research Journey for Geographies of Turkiye: One Geographer’s Longitudinal Quest”. Dr. Mitchell said that “As a geographer notices right away, Turkiye’s site and situation as a “place” is truly marvelous. Many of you will recall that in 2004, the Association of American Geographers celebrated its 100th anniversary by commissioning a book to look at Geography for the new century. It was an enormous task with more than 600 pages and 100 brief chapters to commemorate the milestone. Colleagues Don Janelle, Barney Warf, and Kathy Hansen edited this book titled World Minds: Geographical perspectives on world problems. This text covers the vast subject area of our discipline—the human and physical world itself—in conceptual and methodological strategy that moves us beyond the stereotypical criticism of the past toward critical problem solving in social and environmental research. The book helps us to refocus and quickly recognize the enormous scope of geography as an intellectual discipline. Certainly, Geographers’ research can and does contribute to questions and

solutions for many geographical problems and issues—especially for the 100 important questions presented in this book. This is a highly recommended reference for any geographer. Geographical perspectives of places, connections, human-environment interactions, scale, and maps all contribute to understanding and in many cases solving problems. As the book so aptly contends, Geographers, with geographical thinking and methodologies, help to interpret and to resolve many problems that confront society and environment, and will be even more effective with the new GIS and GPS technology.

Mehmet Arslan, Olesya Razdobudko, Gulnara Nyussupova, Sheripzhan Nadyrov, Issel Akanova As geographers continue pursuing research, our diversity of problems, our foundation of site and situation, our concern for and identification of scale—from the local, national, regional and international level—with our grounding in maps and cartography, and with our concern and love for the holistic human and physical environment, there is no doubt that our discipline will continue contributing to global geographical solutions. We see strong evidence of this today in our program of oral and poster presentations for GEOMED 2013. An interesting presentation was made by Dr. Ordenbek MAZBAYEV from Kazakistan on “Polar Antarctic Researches by Kazakhstan Scientists (Automobile Scientific Expedition to the South Pole)”. Another lecture on “Geo-Economic and Regional Situation in Turkic - Speaking Countries in Central Asia” was given by S. Nadyrov, G. Nyussupova and A. Milkaidarov again from Kazakistan. The presentation by Dr. M. Lukic and colleagues discussed the “Demographic Development of Bosnia and Herzegovina from The Ottoman Period Till 1991 and The Modern Demographic Problems”. As usual the participation from Georgia was at high level and T. Basilashvili and the colleagues spoke on the “Desertification Risk in Kakheti Region (East Georgia)”, whereas M.Elizbarashvili and the group discussed the “Regional Climate Change in Georgia Under Global Warming Conditions”.

Konovalova on “Towards a Historical Geography of Eastern Crimea: The City of Russia in The 12th Century”. Dr. Z. Dlugosz and P. Razniak from Poland gave interesting lecture on “Are Asian Countries Threatened by Demographic Aging?”, whereas J.Solon from the same country delivered a lecture on the “Relationship Between Vegetation and Soil Along A Topographical Gradient”. Dr. I.R. Abdulrahman and F.A.Suliman from Nigeria and Sudan discussed the “Spatial Information for Sustainable Land Resources Development: Using Technology for Informed Decision Making and “Factors Affecting Women's Access to Agricultural Services and Farm Income in Sennar State”.Dr. Y. Kato and Dr. M. Sano presented a paper on the “National Parks and World Heritage Sites in Japan”. Colleagues from A. Khoetsyan and S. Khachatryan from Armenia spoke on the “ The Modeling of Natural and Socioeconomic Factors of Desertification and its Particularity for The Republic of Armenia”.An interesting lecture was given by J.G. Jakobsen on “Viking Landscape Regionality”.

Right, Field trip in the Taurus Mountains Selected papers will be published in the special issue of indexed journals, a book by an international publisher and rest of the papers will be included in the local proceedings. During the symposium three -nature, culture, geography and history themed field trips were organised, and participants found a chance to explore immediate surroundings. After the

symposium, the Mediterranean Ecosystems Working Group held field trip during June 14-19, 2013.

4a) BERTHA BECKER Geographer Bertha Becker leaves legacy of great theoretical expression Geographer and one of the most respected researchers in the Amazon worldwide, Koifmann Bertha Becker passed away on Saturday, July 13, aged 82, in Rio de Janeiro, leaving a gap

unfillable, but also a legacy of great theoretical and intellectual expression. Bertha began her professional career in the early 1950s, when she graduated in geography from the Faculty of Philosophy at the National University of Brazil, the current Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRI), in which institution she ha completed he PhD in 1970 and has developed an intense taching activity for fourty years. Member of the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC) and the Academia Brazileira de Ciencias (ABC), Bertha conducted postdoctoral studies in Urban Studies and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of

Technology (MIT). Responsible for the renewal of a teaching and study of Geography in Brazil, Bertha remained in full activity, part of Laboratory of Land Management (LAGET) UFRI and partiocipating ion the National Institute of Science and Technology (INCT), Biodiversity and Land Use in Amazonia, base in Belém do Parà. The Amazon was the main objective of reflection in the last three decades , occupying much of her theoretica work, whidch covers about two dozen books and over a hundred articles and theoretical manuscripts. A section dedicated to analize the Amazon Region, addressing its urban dynamics, wa published in 2005 in the book Economy and Territory, organized by teshcers Clélio Campolina Diniz, rector of UGMG, and Mauro Borges Lemos. Another book edited by the Rector of UFMG, Regional Development Policies: Challenges and Prospects in light of Experiences of the European Union and Brazil, pulbished in 2007, Bertha examines the role of logistic infrastructers in the organization of territory, with emphasys on the geopolitical aspects, studies and researches conduicted in Amazon designe the name of Bertha Worldwide, transforming the Brazilian geographer in the main international reference on ther region. But the acting of the extrapolated field Bertha merely academic, expressing also an important and ongoing intervention in political and social reality Amazon, involving mainly the complex land issues that fraction of the national territory. 4b) KASHI NATH SINGH (1932-2913) Professor Kashi Nath Singh, the luminous figure of Indian Geography, passed away due to massive heart attack on Thursday 18 July 2013 at 01.45AM. He was born in a village in Bhojpur district of Bihar on 1st January 1932. After having his high school education he had moved to Varanasi and joined Banaras Hindu University, from where passed intermediate and bachelor courses. In continuation, he had received his M.A. (1956), and Ph.D. (1963). He was one among the two India-based geographers who has published his paper in the Annals, Association of American Geographers (vol. 58, no. 2, 1968: pp. 203-220), entitled “Territorial basis of Town and village settlement in Eastern U.P., India”, assumed to be the most cited paper in geography by scholars from abroad. On 29 September 1957 Prof. K.N. Singh had joined Department of Geography, Banaras Hindu University as Lecturer, and promoted to Reader in 1968. During 1977-78 he had been professor and head, department of geography at Patna University (Bihar), but in followed up year 1978 he had return back as Professor of Integrated Area Development in the department of geography at Banaras Hindu University, which he cherished till 1993. He has been Head, Department of Geography, Banaras Hindu University during April1981 to March 1986. During 1991-93 (two terms), he had served as member of the Board of Directors, U.S. Educational Foundation in India (U.S.E.F.I.), New Delhi. He had credit to publish 6 text books, 11 co-edited volumes, and over 70 research articles. His visits abroad included East Africa, Anglo-America, Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Bali, U.K. and U.S.A. He was also an Executive Member of the Commonwealth Geographical Bureau, London (1968-1972 and 1976-80); Asst. Secretary, NGSI, and was Life Member of national bodies like NGSI, NAGI, NEGS, IIG, CIG, and UBBP. He was honoured to be the President, National Association of Geographers India (NAGI), 1985-86, and Institute of Indian Geographers (IIG), 1991-92. During November 1993 - June 2008, he had been Professor of Geography in the College of Social Sciences, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. After returning from Ethiopia, he was living in Varanasi, in his own house, and sometimes was passing his holidays with his doctor son and his family in the campus of Banaras Hindu University. During 1964-66 he was on leave to USA as Fulbright Scholar at Rutgers the State University of New Jersey; and in 1965-66 summer he served as Associate Professor at East Stroudsburg State College/ University, East Stroudsburg PA. In this period he studied and collaborated with Prof. John E. Brush (1919-2007), who was already influenced by the researches of Prof. Singh as an external examiner of his PhD thesis on “Rural Market and Rurban Centres in Eastern Uttar Pradesh (India)” (1963). Professor K.N. Singh was specialised in the studies of Rural settlements, Historical geography and planning, Economic geography, and Social geography. His publications include 6 text books, 13 co-edited books, and about 70 research papers. For such academic pursuits he paid visits as scholar, fellow and speaker in several countries in East Africa, Anglo-America, Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Bali, U.K. and U.S.A. David E. Sopher in his famous critical essay, “Towards a Rediscovery of India: Thoughts on some neglected geography”, in, Marvin W. Mikesell, ed. Geographers Abroad (University of Chicago, Chicago, 1973: pp. 110-133) appraised Prof. Singh’s contribution (p. 123) as representative of the Varanasi school in rural settlement and urban morphology. Famous American anthropologist Richard G. Fox, in his book, Urban India: Society, Space and Image

(1970, Duke University) wrote about his classical paper (AAAG, 58, no. 2, 1968): “Our papers have different emphases and in several places in the text some criticism is made of K.N. Singh’s interpretation. However, these differing viewpoints and interpretations in no way remove my intellectual debt to Dr. Singh, right only for the paper cited above, but for his [other] original paper on the subject.” Fox in another of his book, Kin, Clan, Raja, and Rule (UCP, Berkeley, & OUP Delhi, 1971), writes: “Recent work by Bernard Cohn, K.N. Singh, M.C. Pradhan, etc. has indicated the important role played by unilineal kin groups of locally dominant Kshatriya “Castes” in the lower level political organisation of traditional North India.” Some of his papers were prescribed in the graduate courses in Hiroshima University, and are highlighted by famous Japanese scholar Prof. Hiroshi Ishida in his book, A Cultural Geography of the Great Plains of India (Univ. of Hiroshima Press, 1972). The absence of Prof. Singh will be always felt by Indian geography, and we will miss him for many years to come; however message, insights and visions are always with us.
