IIA Audit News: A Newsletter for Members of the Albany Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors
President’s Message By Elizabeth Bogdanowicz, CGAP
Greetings! The Albany IIA hopes your
Thanksgiving provided an opportunity
to enjoy the company of loved ones and
all of your favorite fixings. Before I
talk about what the Chapter is up to in
December, I would like to recognize
the outstanding programs the Chapter
brought to its members in November.
On November 16th, the Chapter hosted
“Auditing for Impact and Career
Advancement” at Siena College. Mi-
chael Fucilli (CIA, QIAL, CRMA,
CGAP, CFE) talked to Siena College
students and industry professionals
about how they could positively impact
their organizations and how auditing
skills could advance their careers.
Michael’s humor, energy, and wealth of
experiences as Auditor General at the
Metropolitan Transportation Authority
and IIA Research Foundation Board of
Trustees member, made for a very
exciting presentation. We hope Michael
comes back to see us in the future.
On November 21st and November
22nd, the Chapter co-sponsored the
2016 Fraud Conference with the
Albany Chapter of the ACFE and the
NY Capital Chapter of the AGA.
Attendees were treated to presentations
from Vincent Green, Michael “Bret”
Hood, and Beth Pendergrass on a
variety of fraud related topics.
Registration approached an all-time
high, with more than 220 attendees
each day. In addition, we donated
$1,000 to the Regional Food Bank of
Northeastern New York.
Now we turn our attention to
December. Please consider joining us at
Wolferts Roost on December 13th for
the Holiday Luncheon. Attendees will
enjoy a delicious lunch and an uplifting
talk from local news anchor and report-
er Benita Zahn. You will also have an
opportunity to purchase raffle tickets to
benefit Kelly’s Angels (http://
www.kellysangelsinc.org/).
Registration closes on December 9th,
so please don’t delay!
As always, please contact me anytime
at [email protected] to
discuss volunteer opportunities with the
Chapter. In addition, please consider
joining us for coffee, bagels, and lively
discussion at our monthly Board meet-
ings. Meetings are held on the second
Wednesday of the month, at 7:45 am at
the New York State Teachers’ Retire-
ment System (10 Corporate Woods
Drive, Albany, NY 12211).
And finally, please follow the Chapter
on Facebook for event updates and fun
giveaways!

Complimentary Fraud Partnership
Webinar:
SEC Investigations: Are There Bene-
fits to Cooperation & Self-
Reporting?
December 13, 2016
1:00 – 2:30 PM
Sign up for the latest complimentary
Anti-Fraud Collaboration webinar, SEC
Investigations: Are There Benefits to
Cooperation and Self-Reporting? and
understand the real implications of pro-
actively engaging in the Securities and
Exchange Commission’s Division of
Enforcement Formal Cooperation Pro-
gram.
Self-reporting organizational fraud is
encouraged by the SEC through the
cooperation program’s various benefit
levels, accrued by individuals and com-
panies through a weighed scale based
on four broad factors: self-policing, self
-reporting, remediation, and coopera-
tion. Today, companies and boards con-
tinue to struggle with when and how to
accurately report organizational fraud,
and the potential inherent risks for not
self-reporting.
Learning Objectives
Webinar participants will explore the
inner workings of the SEC Cooperation
Program, including recent cooperation
agreement trends and the latest agree-
ment enforcement actions. Participate
in discussions on real-world examples
of self-reporting companies, and hear
from SEC experts on what you need to
know to ensure your organization takes
the right steps after fraud is detected.
Attendees will also understand how the
Commission defines cooperation and
when self-reporting is the right step for
their organization.
If you are a key player in the financial
reporting supply chain, including all
audit committee members, financial
executives, internal auditors and
external auditors, you cannot miss this
complimentary fraud webinar.

The Election’s Over, Now What?
Understanding Washington’s Agenda
for Public Policy Change in 2017
December 20, 2016
1:00 – 2:00 PM
A polarizing election creates enormous
challenges for a new president and
Congress tasked with finding solutions
that will bridge the nation’s political,
economic, social, and cultural divides.
The business environment of the next
decade promises to be shaped by the
regulatory and legislative actions
emerging from Washington over the
next two years.
Join the Arnold & Porter Legislative
and Regulatory team, which represents
The IIA and its members’ interests in
Washington, to understand how
the outcome of this election will
drive policy changes that present
extraordinary business risks and
opportunities. In addition to a
broad review of the election’s
impact on the business world, we
will take a more in-depth look at
the changes coming in several
highly regulated industries: tax,
financial services, insurance, health
care, life sciences, and energy.
Learning Objectives
To gain an understanding of the
post-election landscape of
Congress and the executive branch.
To see a more in-depth analysis of
what changes may be coming in
several highly regulated industries
such as: tax, financial services,
insurance, health care, life
sciences, and energy.
To look into how the election will
shape the issues policymakers take
on in 2017 more broadly.
Continuing Professional Education By Sandy Meadows, CIA, CGAP
Hello folks! For all of you certification
holders, it is that time again when you
are looking at your CPEs for the year to
assess whether you have the necessary
hours to maintain your certification. In
case you have forgotten, that is 40 hours
for the CIA, and 20 hours for the
specialty designations (don’t forget that
25% of the hours for the specialty
designations must be related to the
specialty). Hours must be reported
through CCMS by December 31. If you
fail to report, you will be moved to an
inactive status with a 6-month grace
period to complete your CPE re-
quirements. After failure to report for
more than 12 months, you will be
moved to an inactive status.
So if you are now looking at your CPEs
for the year and realizing that you are in
danger of falling short, what can you
do? There are still some options!
You can take magazine quizzes (3 CPEs
for each quiz up to 18 CPEs for the
year) and the free IIA webinars. You
can also apply for college course work,
write for applicable publications, or earn
credits for pertinent presentations.
For more information on the allowable
CPE options, see Administrative
Directive 4
(https://na.theiia.org/certification/
Public%20Documents/Administrative-
Directive-No-4.pdf).
“But, Sandy,” I can hear you saying,
“who will know if I don’t report my
CPE on time?” Well, in answer to that I
will refer you to the story of a local CIA
who has been audited TWO times in the
past THREE years. Yes, it’s true. So
don’t forget to get your hours
completed and reported by December
31.
Feel free to contact me if you have any
other questions related to certification or
to CPE at:

The Chapter Achievement Program is
designed to recognize activities that pro-
mote the strategic objectives of The IIA.
This program provides minimum standards
of performance for providing service to
our Chapter members, providing service to
the internal auditing profession and for
administering the activities of the Chapter.
The Program emphasizes the basic mission
of the Chapter, encourages Chapters to
perform that mission, and provides
Chapters with a means to evaluate their
success in accomplishing that mission.
