IIIT Delhi's Fourth NewsletterWe are pleased to bring out the fourth edition of IIITDelhi’s electronic newsletter, which covers keydevelopments in the institute spanning the last six months, including the 3rd convocation, several new facultymembers we welcomed into the family, laurels won, highlights of placements for the year, and our increasedpresence at the national and international stage. This edition of our biannual emagazine will familiarize youwith our impressive growth story and give you a glimpse of recent events on the road to providing qualityeducation and doing cutting edge research in information technology.
3rd Convocation of the InstituteThe third convocation of the institute was held on August 31, 2014.The chief guest of the convocation this year was Mr. Sunil KantMunjal, Joint Managing Director of Hero MotoCorp Ltd. Theconvocation, began with an invocation song, followed by thechairman of the Board of Governors Mr. Kiran Karnik declaring theconvocation open. The director, Prof. Pankaj Jalote then presentedhis report. Students and the parents both found great inspiration anddeep resonance in the words of our chairman Mr. Kiran Karnik, whoarticulated his vision of the new path for the graduating class, asthey made their foray into the real world. The Chief guest for theoccasion Shri. SK Munjal celebrated the spirit of IIITD, calling it “anisland of excellence”. Prof. Jalote emphasized on the institute’s keyfocus IT education and research and advised young students tostrive for periodic reinvention of themselves and for “serial mastery”,in all aspects of their work life. INOI Preparatory Workshop, In Collaboration withIARCS Conducted by IIITDelhi
Prof. Pankaj Jalote, has initiated several innovative outreachprogrammes for the student community. IIITD conducted amentorship and training workshop for school students in Delhi whoaspire to succeed in the Indian National Olympiad in Informatics(INOI). The workshop was conducted under the supervision offaculty from IIITDelhi and IIT Delhi. This successful event hadpresence from student hopefuls preparing for the Zonal ComputingOlympiad, from which students are selected to participate in theIndian National Olympiad in Informatics. IARCS, which organizesINOI, provided assistance for this workshop. Prof. Pankaj Jalotespeaking on the occasion told young students and engineeringaspirants that IIITDelhi is committed towards making all efforts tostrengthen a culture of using IT as a problem solving tool. IIITDstudents mentored school students and engaged actively with themthrough out the workshop.

IIITD Awards its First Ph.Ds.Achieving yet another milestone in academic excellence andupholding it’s commitment to research, IIITD has awarded its firstPh.Ds. to research scholars Kuldeep and Himanshu Sharad Bhatt,who were admitted to the pioneering CS Ph.D. batch in 2009. Withthis, in just over 5 years, the institute has graduated students in allthree higher education degrees Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D.
Student Awards Our students distinguished themselves yet again by winning severalawards. Himanshu Sharad Bhatt received the Best DoctoralDissertation Award by the Indian Unit of Pattern Recognition andArtificial Intelligence (IUPRAI) at ICVGIP2014. Gaurav Goswamireceived the third prize at the IDRBT Doctoral Colloquium 2014. Anda team comprising of Ankush, Shubha and Vivek received the BestPoster award at IEEE ANTS 2014. Read More
New Faculty at IIITDIIITD welcomed six fulltime faculty members into it’s family Dr.Pravesh Biyani, Dr. Chetan Arora, Dr. Sambuddho Chakravarty, Dr.Ojaswa Sharma, Dr. Sachit Butail, Dr. Anand Srivastava. With all ofthem holding Ph.D.s from prestigious institutions in India andabroad, IIIT Delhi now has over 40 permanent, 14 adjunct and 10visiting faculty members And is the preferred institution forcommitted scholars, in IT education and research. Faculty Research FellowshipIIITD congratulates and celebrates the work of three facultymembers, recipients of the faculty research fellowshipPonnurangam Kumaraguru, Richa Singh and Mayank Vatsa. TheFaculty Research Fellowship (FRF), is an initiative at IIITD, torecognize the excellent work being done by existing facultymembers who have completed four years of full time active, serviceat IIITD. Dr. Ponnurangam has received the Hemant Bharat RamFaculty Research Fellowship, Dr. Richa Singh, is the recipient of theTV Mohandas Pai Faculty Research Fellowship and Dr. Mayank hasbeen awarded the AR Krishnaswamy Faculty Research Fellowshipin recognition and support of their work at the institute and forcontinued research and teaching engagement.
Winter School
IIITD hosted the IEEE SPSAPSIPA Winter School on MachineIntelligence and Signal Processing, from December 2023, 2014.The winter school was designed on topic of machine learning andsignal processing. This school brought together world classacademicians and researchers to teach the latest in machineintelligence and signal processing, in a first ever event, to impartmachine learning and signal processing education to students andyoung professionals. Covering topics like Computer Vision,Statistical Signal Processing, Social Learning, Bioinformatics,Compressed Sensing, Matrix Completion, Biometrics, Big Data,Medical Imaging, Video Processing. IIITD Global PresenceDr. Pankaj Jalote delivered his remarks as a panelist at WorldEngineering Education Forum (WEEF) 2014, Dubai: on the theme"Building Engineering Excellence in Resource ScarceEnvironments". IIITD also had a strong presence this year at theIndiaU.S. Technology Summit jointly organised by Confederation ofIndian Industry (CII), in partnership with the Government of India’sDepartment of Science & Technology (DST) from 18th – 19thNovember . United States was the partner country for this year’s20th edition of the Technology Summit. A large number of industryleaders, innovators, researchers, academics, and governmentofficials came together to share and showcase successfultechnology stories and strategies solutions. The IIITD booth wasfacilitated by the department of Technical Training and Education(TTE) and received many young researchers who were keen toknow more about our work. Prof. Jalote made his remarks on thehigh level strategy panel on, “How to boost IndiaU.S. Partnership inmanufacturing, trade & investments in Information TechnologySector”. Our chairman Mr. Kiran Karnik was the moderator of thepanel, which addressed key industry concerns on actualizingIndia’s internet economy potential.
Placement ‘14 UpdateThe placement record for the batch graduating in 2014 for 148Students was yet again impressive and at par with the bestinstitutions in the country. With 57 companies vising us, over 155Offers were received by our students, including 24 Overseas offers.The highest salary (overseas) : Rs 33 Lacs (InCampus), and USD100,000 (Off –Campus). The Highest B.Tech. Salary (Indian) : 19.5Lacs with an Average BTech Salary: 13.57 Lacs. Our averageinternational salary was: 33.87 Lacs. We at IIITD believe that withgood intentions and institutional support from the government andexceptional mentorship and leadership through professional andcompetent administration, change is possible and much can beachieved in India, for India by Indians. Alumni Meet 2014The 2nd alumni meet was held on 21st December and attended by over 50graduated students from different batches of our BTech, MTech and PhDprograms. It was a daylong event with multiple interactive sessions facilitated by
Prof. Jalote and the alumni coordinator Dr. Richa Singh.Brainstorming sessions took place on strengthening theengagement between the alumni and the institute. And variousideas were tabled. Alumni including Naman Jain, Yash Seth,Tanmay Verma, Sunpreet Arora, Divya Bansal, Bhanu Vermashared their previous funfilled experiences in "walking down thememory lane sessions". The alumni expressed their appreciationand expressed their willingness to continue extending their supportto the institute. Read more.
