WorkcampNr.: ijgd 01203 Workcamp Title: Overcoming borders – commitment to peace and democracy Location: Hötensleben When: 30.7.-22.8.2021 Where: Saxony-Anhalt; 20km from Helmstedt, 60km from Magdeburg, 60km from Braunschweig Who: 9 participants from around the world, aged 18 - 26 Meals: The group will prepare and cook meals together. Accommodation: You will be staying in 3 bedrooms in a village community centre, with a communal kitchen, a large living area and use of the garden with its barbecue. Nearest Train Station: Helmstedt Nearest Airport: Hanover or Berlin Special Requirements: - This work camp has an extensive study component which deals with current German history and the topic of "German division" - You need to be able to ride a bike - Basic knowledge of German is an advantage, but not a requirement for participation Project In this workcamp you will be looking intensively at the division of Germany and the issues of peace, democracy and international understanding. The small town of Hötensleben in Saxony-Anhalt was located within the 2km exclusion zone that was set up along the 1,400km-long border to West Germany by the GDR after the Second World War. Due to the constant state surveillance and the various armed forces, life there was even more restricted than it already was in the GDR. The border, which was made of walls, barbed-wire fences and watchtowers, was monitored by border guards and dogs. Mines and self-shot systems were designed to prevent people from the GDR from escaping to the West. After the fall of

Page 9: ijgd - Workcamps 2021

the Berlin Wall in 1989, dedicated citizens of Hötensleben democratically campaigned for the preservation of a 350m-long section of the border complex, which is now a listed building. The facilities are open to the public and visitors can find out more and book guided tours at the Hötensleben Border Memorial Association. The association's educational work also includes inviting young people from all over the world to an international workcamp which takes place every year and strives for peace, democracy and international understanding. This year you can be part of this workcamp and, together with your fellow participants, support the Border Memorial Association with maintenance and repair work on the border facilities, as well as with the maintenance of the site (cutting the grass, weeding and clearing the surrounding areas). Study Component Alongside the practical activities on the grounds, there is an extensive study component to the camp. This includes a 2-day history workshop in the „Gedenkstätte Deutsche Teilung Helmstedt Marienborn“ (Helmstedt Marienborn Memorial of German Division), a visit to the Bundestag in Berlin and various historical and regional tours in the surrounding areas. Free Time Hötensleben is a small place with around 2,500 inhabitants. The village community is looking forward to the workcamp and to the international exchange that will take place. There will be many activities organised by local clubs available to you, such as the volunteer fire service and the sports club. During the camp, excursions will be planned for you – you will visit a middle-aged town (Quedlinburg or Goslar) and the Schöningen Research Museum. Besides this, you will be taken on a guided bike tour through the open-cast mining area of the former lignite mine. A highlight around this time of year is the “Rock am Rathaus” festival, which takes place right by your front door. The swimming baths in Schönigen, the outdoors swimming pool in the Wackersleben district and the sports facilities belonging to the sports club are all open to you free of charge. There will be bikes available for you to use to go on trips to nearby areas. Project: The forest areas in the Upper Harz region are not only nature reserves, they are also recreational spaces. As large, connected planes of trees and forests, they are very important for protecting the climate. In this camp, you will be helping with nature and environmental protection tasks and thereby contributing to the conservation of habitats for (rare) plants and animals and restoring the balance of nature. Your group’s tasks will include taking care of young deciduous trees, constructing ‘natural’ water ecosystems, repairing park benches, huts and hiking signs, and building hunting facilities. You will work in alternating small groups which will allow you to get an insight into the ecological, economic and social duties of forestry. Free Time: The Harz region - with its mountains, stalactite caves, mining museums and forests - is a popular holiday destination and recreational area. During the camp, the foresters working with your group will organize a hiking trip to the legendary 'Brocken' (the tallest mountain in the region) for you. Wildemann itself is a small mountain community of around 1,000 residents, surrounded by various hiking trails. Wildemann has an outdoor swimming pool, a glow-golf facility and a mini-gold course. The 19-Lachter-Stollen, a discontinued mine, is also worth a visit. For more information: https://en.harzinfo.de/ https://www.harzinfo.de/urlaubsorte/wildemann www.brocken-harz.de

Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg is the biggest riverine island in Europe and a vivid multicultural neighbourhood, where people from 192 countries live. Projects and events, like IBA, Dockville/Artville or 48h Wilhelmsburg, have been influencing various places, people and themes in the neighbourhood. The housing and integration of a high number of refugees also concerns the people in Wilhelmsburg. Your job is to catch on film, what is special about Wilhelmsburg, in particular how people, who live and work here, cope with the sociocultural changes and challenges in Wilhelmsburg. Experienced media educators will support you in developing your ideas in three groups of 4 to 5 people each, learning how to handle camera technology and editing scenes. Towards the end of the project you will show your contributions in your own show, which will be broadcasted in Hamburg's citizen television TIDE (www.tidenet.de). To prepare for the work camp, please take a look at the following websites and develop three ideas, which projects and events or socio-cultural and social topics of the Wilhelmsburg district you would like to depict on film. http://www.hamburg.com/explore/districts/wilhelmsburg/ (English) http://www.hamburg.de/wilhelmsburg/ (German) http://www.hamburg.de/sehenswertes-wilhelmsburg/ (German) http://www.iba-hamburg.de/en/iba-in-english.html http://en.msdockville.de/ https://www.mvde.de/48h-wilhelmsburg (German) Please send your ideas by 27th of June to the camp leaders, who contact you about 4 weeks before the start of the camp. We would like you to show different angles to the story and make and effort to give a voice to

people who are rarely listened to.

WorkcampNr.: ijgd 21305 Workcamp Title: Climate Protection in the Bavarian Moorlands Location: Raubling When: 21.08. – 05.09.2021 Where: Bavaria; 8km from Rosenheim, 60km from Munich, 80km from Salzburg Who: 16 participants from around the world, aged 18 – 26. Meals: The group will prepare and cook meals together Accommodation: You will be sleeping on gym mats in the sports hall in Raubling. Address: Sporthalle am Sportplatz Raubling, Rosenheimer Str. 2, 83064 Raubling Nearest Train Station: Raubling Nearest Airport: Munich Special Requirements: You must be able to ride a bike, since you will be cycling around 5km each day from your accommodation to the work site. You will also need to bring strong sturdy shoes with you, along with swimwear and waterproof clothing. Notes: The work in this project will sometimes be physically demanding. Wi-Fi is available during the camp. Project: Over 200 years ago, people began to use peat as an energy source due to increasing energy requirements and a shortage of wood. Across Germany, almost 97% of the original moorland has been destroyed by drainage and peat extraction. From 2005 to 2012, one of the largest upland bog restoration projects in Central Europe took place in the "Rosenheimer Stammbeckenmooren" near Raubling. In order to keep the rainwater in the bogs of the former peat mining areas, drainage ditches were closed and peat walls were poured in. As a result, plant growth and biodiversity are now rapidly increasing in these rewetted areas, which also serves to protect against flooding and climate change (through the reduction of greenhouse gases). In this workcamp, you will have the opportunity to make the original nature of the bogs, along with the natural conversation work taking place there, ecologically compatible and accessible. You will be building hiking trails out of wood, slate material and bark mulch, clearing bushes, building wooden benches and wooden tables, creating an adventure station for insects and building a wooden shed, and all this with a fantastic view of the Bavarian Alps. The camp is funded by the municipality of Raubling and the Environmental, Cultural and Social Foundation in the Rosenheim district.

Nearest Airport: Munich/Salzburg

Special Requirements: This is a camp for nature lovers. You will be living far away

from civilisation in the middle of the forest. The work will be physically demanding

and will take place on slopes.

Category: ENVI

Project:

You will be helping to maintain the mountain forests at the edge of the Alps. You'll be

planting small trees, in order to keep the forest youthful and to establish a mix of

different tree species which keeps climate change at bay. This allows the mountain

forest to continue to enact its various protective measures in the future. In addition to

planting young seedlings, there will be many other tasks during the camp for you to

complete in order to support of the forest. These include, for example, mowing trees,

building and making crates, and building pasture fences. Pasture fences help the

ranger to keep an eye on the wildlife in the area. You'll be working amongst the

beautiful nature and will therefore experience the background of the mountain forest.

Since the weather in the Alps can change very suddenly, you will need to bring the

following clothes: strong ankle-high mountain boots with a firm sole are absolutely

necessary, as well as waterproof clothing and sun protection! During the first week

you'll be working for 5 hours every day, during the second week you’ll have one extra

day off, so you’ll be working for 6.5 hours on the other days. The journey from your

accommodation to the place of work is 30 – 45 minute with a minibus. Your

accommodation is in the Rastnock Huts on the north edge of the Retieralpe mountain

massif, around 855m above sea level. It's located around 15km south west of Bad

Reichenhall and is easily reachable through a steep forest road by car. You therefore

don't need to carry your luggage all the way up the mountain. There is a large room

on the ground floor with tables, chairs, benches, a wood oven, gas lighting, a gas

cooker and crockery and cutlery. On the floor above there is another room with

mattresses. You should bring your own sleeping bags, bed sheets and pillows with

you. The toilet cabin (dry toilet/outhouse) is located outside of the huts. Water is also

only available outside of the huts from a fountain or a trough. The quality of the water

is not officially supervised, so you should first boil the water before drinking it. There

is only warm water if you warm it up yourself using the oven, or if you build a solar

shower. Please bring biodegradable soap with you. There is a meadow outside the

huts on which you can play and look at the stars.

More information about the mountain forest campaign can be found here: www.aelf-

Camp number: ijgd 71102 Title: Behind the scene - discover industrial heritage Location: Berlin When: 07.08.-22.08.2021 Where: Berlin Who: 15 participants aged 18-26 years old Meals: You will cook together. The ijgd will provide you with food. Accommodation: in shared rooms in bungalows on the grounds of the FEZ Berlin Train: S-Bahn station Wuhlheide (Berlin) Airport: BER Extra fee: 50€ City-Ticket subsidy Categories: STUD, CONS, MANU

Project:

The "Study and Work" camp offers a mixture of exciting input on (industrial) history, work in a restoration workshop and in museums. You will take a look behind the scenes: how are museum objects restored, what stories do the objects tell and how is an exhibition actually created? We will show you Berlin from an unusual perspective. Industrialization changed people's lives from the ground up. Berlin overtook cities like Paris or London almost overnight and became the most modern metropolis on the European continent. You will go on a search for traces at various locations in the city: What does industrial history have to do with us and our lives today? You live in the southeast of the city in the district of Oberschöneweide. At the Berlin University of Applied Sciences (HTW Berlin), restorers will show you how technical cultural assets can be preserved. In small exercises, you can try your hand under supervision, ,like at gluing glass for example. At the German Museum of Technology, you can look behind the scenes of museum work and get an insight into the work of museum educators. An important part of industrial history is the topic of forced labor. At the Documentation Center Nazi Forced Labor Berlin, you will learn about the biographies of men, women, and children who kept production in the factories running as forced laborers under the Nazi regime. Here you will work with objects, research, write and present your objects to the team in the exhibition. On a second day, a work assignment is planned here. You will help with the cleaning of a historical accommodation barrack. Other excursions, such as a visit to the International Jugendbauhütte (JBH Berlin), round off the program.

Project:

If you are enthusiastic about nature and protecting the environment, the come to the

Märkische Schweiz Nature Park: 40km to the east of Berlin, the park not only offers

unique natural landscapes, but also the backdrop to our project. By working together

with the park’s administration team and the Drei Eichen environmental education

centre, you will not only get to know the park and its surroundings, but you will also

play an active role in shaping it. There will also be young people from the local area

on-site.

People and pets live on the grounds of the Environmental Education Center “Three

Oaks” - and often many guests: children, families, seminar groups. Together with you

we want to renew the fence of the goat shed and redesign the area around the pond

and the footbridge.

For activities in between “Three Oaks “ (Drei Eichen) with its terrain offers many

opportunities to learn about plants and animals, nature conservation and alternative

ways of life and to actively participate.

In different nature areas in the nature park Märkische Schweiz we will carry out

landscape conservation work together on several days. In doing so, we will ensure

the protection of the native plants that grow there. Historically, these sites were

created and maintained by a lot of manual labor - mowing adapted to the season and

grazing by sheep and goats. In our workcamp, we help with that. We also renew

sections of hiking trails.

All work will take place outdoors.

Besides this, there will be a diverse programme of environmental educational

activities for you to take part in!

http://www.dreichen.de/ Free Time: Educational Activities: You could take a GPS tour of the nature park, go on a guided walking tour on the topic of “biological diversity”, visit the bat museum, go swimming in the various nearby lakes, visit local cinemas and bars. In Buckow, there is a campfire where you can sit around at night, a climbing wall and also a canoe hire in the nearby area.

Categories: ENVI

Project:

Much more should be done for climate protection and against the rising extinction of species!

It takes you too long to see real progress in these areas?

If you could, like you wanted to, then ... you're in the right place!

In our forest district, with just under 18,000 hectar of state forest, we don't just take care of timber harvesting. On a total of 30 different sized areas, nature conservation projects have priority. Of course keeping so many projects create a lot of work. That's why we can use a lot of motivated hardworking hands.

Page 44: ijgd - Workcamps 2021

You will be out in the fresh air using simple tools such as small hand saws, pruning shears, hoes, scythes, rakes and pitchforks to help the biotopes retain their special character worthy of protection. For example, small spruce trees must be removed so that special plants can continue to grow in the areas, which in turn are the habitat of many rare animal species. There is also a raised moor in our forest district. And as you may know, moors are particularly important because they can store a lot of CO2.

Wait a minute: if there are raised moors, are there also low moors? And if so, what's the difference? And how many meters per year does a raised or low moor actually "grow"?

Well, that's a bit too much to explain here but during the two-week camp, our foresters and forest managers will be happy to answer these and other questions and get you up to date about the subject of forests and nature (conservation).

In any case, we are looking forward to you and your commitment.

Free Time:

In Mühlleithen the summer toboggan run is waiting for you.

In the Bike World in Schöneck you can speed down the mountain.

And if you haven't had enough of the forest yet, you will also find a climbing forest there.

Of course you can also go hiking in the area. Unfortunately the two weeks will not be enough for you to walk along every signposted trail though.

The IFA vacation park in Schöneck offers an adventure swimming pool, including sauna and steam bath, as well as other wellness treatments. So don't forget your towel and swim trunks/swimsuit!

The dams Muldenberg, Werda, Pöhl and Pirk are also worth a trip.

Just like the zoo Klingenthal and the zoo Falkenstein.

You can experience a flight into space in the German Space Exhibition in Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz.

You are more the musical type?

Then you need to visit the museum of musical instruments in Markneukirchen.

In the visitor mine "Grube Tannenberg" in Tannenbergsthal/Schneckenstein with its extensive mineral exhibition you will get an insight into the underground of the Vogtland.

And if you are already here in the area, you should also have a close look at the ski jump of the Vogtland-Arena in Klingenthal.

Or, you can simply enjoy your free time on the grounds of the DAV hut. At the latest when you get together around the campfire (keyword: wood, forest, nature) you will see again why your commitment to this project is so important.

Oh yes, in case the cooking in the group didn't work out so well, there is also a solution in Schöneck. With everything and spicy

ENJOY THE SEASON!
