TRENDS

THE 2013 IKEA CATALOGUEReady for a chance to let your mind run away with ideas? The 2013 IKEA Catalogue comes out this August with 324 pages of products, tips and inspiration for a better everyday life at home. From modular sofas to LED lamps, there are tons of new products from our full product range found online and in stores.

This year, we’re giving more attention and celebration to textiles and their importance at home. An easy and affordable way to bring new life to a room, textiles make a big difference without creating a big dent in your budget.

T ere foc on creati it ince we belie e it can fit into an pace. To top t ing off we e created more film and interacti e feat re t at bring t e catalog e to life and keep the inspiration coming!

Until you can touch, fold, rip, keep and love the 2013 IKEA Catalogue, grab a pen or your smartphone to take notes or shots and get ready to be inspired! On the following pages, there are fresh home furnishing ideas, new products and trends.

MORE THAN JUST A CATALOGUE!With this year’s catalogue, we want to give you more. That’s why we’ve added inspiring film and interacti e feat re to delig t entertain and offer e en more idea and insights for a better life at home. We love having a printed catalogue that can be a part of everyone’s homes all year long, but with today’s technology you get more:

lms it o to s and e ind t e scenes clips image galleries it additional p otos stories from product designers and interacti e ie s ra function ic allo s ou to see inside cup oards and closets

To access the bonus material, you can download an app to smartphones/tablets or see everything at IKEA.ca. If you’re using a smartphone or tablet, look for the phone symbol throughout the catalogue (as seen below) and scan the whole page.

InspIRATIOn mADe even eAsIeRIt’s never been hard to find inspiration in the IKEA catalogue, but this year it’s even easier. We’ve taken our insights about everyday life and used them to make changes in the catalogue to room settings, product displays, styles and more.

For instance, we’ve stopped dividing life at home into rooms. Bedrooms, for example – they’re as varied as the ways people sleep. We’ve taken away our notions of what defined a ‘bedroom’ and replaced them with the idea ‘sleeping.’ We know that some homes don’t have ‘bedrooms’ – they have one 24-hour room where people live and sleep. Life is about activities; not the walls that define where they unfold.

And now, when we’re showing a selection of products, we’ve changed things up so it’s easier to compare products. There’s a better overview of the sizes, designs, styles, colours and materials of what we have – but not all we have since the web and the store show all IKeA products.

speaking of styles, we’ve dedicated several pages of the catalogue to show our range of styles side by side. Whether you like traditional, modern, simple, bold, a little bit more scandinavian or a little bit not, with styles grouped and shown together, it’s easier to find looks and products that speak to you.

Throughout the catalogue, look for the smartphone symbol. It leads to additions and extended material that enhance the catalogue experience with more ideas and inspiration.

Once you’ve found what you’re looking for, we’ve made it easier to find more information on IKEA.ca, where you’ll find even more tips, ideas and inspiration.

All these changes make it easier to be inspired by what you see in the Catalogue and bring new life to your home!

THANK YOU TEXTILESWhether we stop to think about it or not, life would be rather cold and lonely without textiles. That’s why this year at IKEA and in the 2013 Catalogue, we’re celebrating textiles for making life soft, snuggly, lively and personal.

From blankets and rugs to curtains and towels, textiles are an easy, affordable, attractive and quick way to bring new life to your home. Refresh a sofa with cushions or throws. Switch out curtains instead of repainting a room. Change doe n t a e to be big and diffic lt. t can be as small and simple as changing the sheets.

COME ON, CREATIVITYThe 2013 IKEA Catalogue goes well with paint, scissors, glue, needles, thread and an open mind. That’s because this year, we hope our ideas spark even more inspiration for people to express themselves and their creativity at home. OUR CATALOGUe COveRsTRAnDmOn wing chair and footstool

The new sTRAnDmOn wing chair and footstool is a tribute to our favourite IKeA wingback – the mK chair that sold during the early 50’s and was on the 1951 IKeA catalogue cover. On the cover of this year’s catalogue, too, the mK chair is a personal favourite of founder Ingvar Kamprad (it’s his chair on the 2013 cover) and has provided a comfortable, durable and timeless place to unwind, read, watch Tv and come together. now it’s time for sTRAnDmOn to make a better everyday life at home and keep tradition alive.

The sTRAnDmOn armchair may look like the mK chair, but it uses modern materials and construction techniques that meet today’s tougher quality standards. Like the arms and wings – we tested those to ensure they will hold up to today’s uses like children lying across the chair and adults leaning on the wings. By removing the neck pillow and thinning out the legs, the form is more modern, too. And the comfort’s even better – since the high, slightly indented back provides extra support and the new matching footstool lets you put your feet up for full relaxation.

Ready for decades of comfort and good company, sTRAnDmOn has a style that blends in just as easily as it can stand out with eye-catching cushions and throws.

Ingvar Kamprad’s own mK chair is shown on the cover of this year’s IKeA catalogue, with added life from a modern cushion.

BRINGING BACK A FAVOURITEA history of the MK chair

The 50’s was the heyday of the wing chair. To be a part of bringing wing chairs into Swedish homes, Ingvar Kamprad asked a local furniture manufacturer near Älmhult, Sweden (where IKEA has its origins and where much of the company’s activities are still located) to make a really good wing chair that more people would be able to afford.

The chair, named MK, was considered, “Top modern with royal comfort” and, “A quality chair made with Swedish handiwork,” according to t e fir t catalog e . t wa also one of the most popular furniture pieces in St. Erik’s Fair, which was the equivalent to today’s Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair. And it was one of the pieces shown in 1952 in the local furniture store ELFS’s showroom in Älmhult – the forerunner of today’s IKEA store.

There are several reasons why we decided to bring MK back into the range, 61 years after it fir t appearance. er ap t e mo t ignificant rea on i t at we t o g t t e range

needed a generous wing chair. And we still see the need for a really comfortable chair to sit in while watching TV or reading, even if you mig t be reading an -book in tead of a book.

The 1951 IKEA catalogue cover model, the MK chair became a

favourite among Ingvar and the public alike, so much so that it inspired the launch of today’s

STRANDMON armchair.

TRIBALLAPPLJUNG textiles

In creating the new LAPPLJUNG textile collection of rugs, cushions, curtains, quilt co er and more we wanted it to be definitel b t in a t le t at drew more from global in ence andmade tradition and grap ic pattern . For in piration we turned to the Musée de l’Impression sur Étoffes in Mulhouse, France where textile patterns from different periods and places are collected and can be licensed for a limited time.

We asked them to look for patterns of African origin, so we could match them to a few piece and idea we alread ad like a Moroccan-in pired r g drawn b designer Anna Efverlund. Plus, we had a sketch of a bird for a cushion and a few blankets and metre fabrics in the range that we wanted to keep. But we needed a pattern that would unite all the parts into a collection.

One particular woodblock pattern, full of irregularity and liveliness, caught our attention. The pattern was scanned into the computer to experiment with size, scale, colours and combinations until we arrived at a unique pattern for IKEA, based on an authentic motif from Africa.

heKTAR lamps add an oversized, vintage and industrial feel with floor, pendant and wall/clamp spotlight versions. The floor lamp stands 180 cm tall and the bigger pendant lamp has a 47 cm diameter. Designer Ola Wihlborg was assigned to make a clamp spotlight, but was so inspired by bistros, theatre stages and old factories of a bygone era that he just kept going.

“I started by designing the spotlight and liked the way it turned out,” Ola says. “The simple metal form with the matt finish really stood out, and I thought it would also work well as a large pendant lamp and oversized floor lamp. so I designed a few more lamps.”

FYLLIG vase isn’t shy either. At 83 cm tall with a slim shape and narrow opening, it’s easy to compose a lively arrangement even with just a few twigs. Designer siblings Knut hagberg and marianne hagberg say they wanted a design that would fit in both traditional and modern settings and found inspiration in timeless geometric forms.

Knut and marianne are equally inspired by its production. “It takes enormous skills for the glassblowers to make FYLLIG vase,” the siblings say. “They stand in a line like rock stars and blow several kilos of molten glass through a narrow steel pipe to make the vases.”

Available in 22 or 47 cm diameters, heKTAR pendant lamp gives strong, directed light.

BOUTIQUe hOTeLnORDLI bed frame and bedside table FÄRGLAv duvet cover/2 pillowcases and rugsveIO chests of drawers

Bring home the feeling of a boutique hotel without the 5-star price tag with the new nORDLI bed frame and bedside table, FÄRGLAv textiles and sveIO chests of drawers. The clean, white lines add crisp touches to a modern bedroom. Features like an angled headboard and hidden shelves, grooves and zippers create luxury that’s clever and affordable.

Our nORDLI bed frame provides extra comfort for readers or web surfers with an angled headboard. The angles continue in modern cut of the painted solid birch legs that break away from the tradition of 90-degree angles.

Our nORDLI bedside table is optimised for charging gadgets with a hidden shelf that’s got an open back and is roomy enough for a power strip. There’s also a groove in the back legs to conceal pesky cords.

FÄRGLAv duvet covers and pillowcases have a densely woven 166 thread count and a renewable lyocell/cotton blend that wicks moisture away. Under its graphic colour block is a zipper to keep the quilt neatly tucked in. There’s even the matching FÄRGLAv rug in 100% wool.

SVEIO chests of drawers have clean, white lines and are available in two or five drawers. With integrated dampers, the extra roomy drawers close slowly, silently and softly.

Contrast the clean, white lines of NORDLI bed frame and bedside table with the strong stripe of red in FÄRGLAV duvet cover, pillowcases and rug.

Inside the NORDLI bedside table’s beveled-bottom front, there’s a drawer, removable insert and hidden shelf.

“When we designed TIDNY we wanted to make a fabric that people could have fun with and would inspire their creativity,” say designers Sissi Edholm and Lisa Ullenius. “We started by drawing a fantasy landscape, with only black contour lines. The idea is that you can use fabric pen to fill in t e conto r an wa o like - to match the colours in your room or to bring out a theme in the pattern. But you can also use it just like it is, in black and white, of course.”

Leaves to love GURINE metre fabricÖVERENS dinnerware

Designers Lisa Ullenius and Sissi Edholm often get t eir in piration from nat re and ora wit t eir leafy motifs, GURINE metre fabric and ÖVERENS dinnerware are no exception.

GURINE metre fabric could become lots of things around the house like curtains, wall hangings or tablecloths. But most of all, GURINE wants to be cushions. To make it easy to create cushions, Lisa and Sissi included both straight and mirrored motifs as well as dotted lines, which guide scissors the whole way around.

Lisa and Sissi found inspiration for the pattern in t eir leaf-co ered co rt ard o t ide t eir office in Stockholm’s Old Town. “We scanned leaves into the computer and outlined them, drew and cut out forms by hand and experimented until we found the different motifs,” says Lisa. “They’ve become a bit like fanta lea e in pired b nat re b t no pecific type of leaf.”

ÖVERENS dinnerware are microwave and dishwasher safe earthenware that come in bowls and different- ized plate in w ite and green. Whether using only ÖVERENS or combining it with another set, the pattern makes it easy to create a personal table setting.
