PREFACE

This is primer 2 of a series of graded materials which includes pre-reading les~ sons, primer l, primer 2, book 3 (lst reader), and book 4 (2nd reader). It has been prepared by Jeu.n Shand and Hazel Wrig9lesworth, members of the Summer Institute of Linguistics.

The letters of the alphabet are sym­bo:!.ized as follows: ~' b, k, d, ~'· g,, . .h,-J, l, ~' 2, !2.9.' £, £, ~' 1, ~' ~' ~' X' and ;lo~t2l 2~op which is represented by hyphen (-) 2fter consonants and by (') elsewhere, excep~ in intervocalic position where it is not symbolized. These symbols closely resemble their counterparts in the National Language, with the exception of ~ which is similar to the e of the English word the.

TO THE TEACHER The students must have completed the pre­

reading lessons and primer 1 before beginning bQok.

At the beginning of each lesson, print on the blackboard the new syllables to be taught. These are found at the top of the first page in the lesson. The new syllables are always presented in association with familiar sylla­bles. For example, students who have studied primer 1 are familiar with ru and ne. In the first lesson of this primer-:t'hey learn rud by comparing it with ru and new by comparing it with ne. Also print on the blackboard ~~he new words to be taught in the lesson.. They are to be printed in two lists. In the first li~t the syllables are divided <as shown in page 1). In the second list the words are not divided into syllables. The students are to be taught from the blackboard to read the new words. The teacher must not tell them the word, but rather he~them read the word syllable by syllable. The teacher will then drill the class in reading the new words until they are easily recognized.

After the blackboard work the students will read the lesson from their books. Have the class complete one part at a time. Before they begin each page, read the directions a­loud and also do a sample problem on the blackboard which will show them exactly how to complete the exercise. The material has been so organized that the teacher may have the student complete the exercises by marking in the book or on a separate paper.

Lessons 2 to 7 have pages which teach the students to read new syllables similar to the syllables presented on the first page of the lesson. The page of new syllables is followed by pages which teach the students to read new

words of the same spelling pattern as the words introduced on the first page of each lesson. If the students are able to figure out the new syllables and new words without help, this is preferred. If not, use blackboard drills· to help the student to read the new words by helping him read the syllables. Challenge the student to want to figure ou~ these new words by himself, to satisfy himself that he can read independently.

Lessons 8 and 9 are stories. The words presented at the top of the story pages are sight words. These are words made up of syl­lables which have not yet been taught. Do not expect students to read these words without help. As in the cas~ of all sight words read the new word to the student.

By the time the student finishes the book he should be able to recognize the words of the primer instantly without the need to read them syllable by syllable.
