Todd: OK, Laura, I'm going to ask you questions about the post office inHong Kong. OK, or just sending letters. How often do you write letters?

Laura: Well, when I was young, I wrote quite often to my pen pals, but rightnow, instead of sending a letter I usually send my friends e-mails.

Todd: Yeah! Me, too. How much does it cost to send a postcard in HongKong overseas?

Laura: Well, to Asian countries, it costs about two dollars, two Hong Kongdollars. To European countries it costs about three dollars.

Todd: OK, and when you send mail in Hong Kong, do you send it from yourhouse, or do you..

Laura: Well, we have to go the post office in order to send lettersor parcels.

Todd: Really, OK! Cause it's so crowded in Hong Kong that...

Laura: Well, Yes, Yes!

Todd: OK, and in Japan do you receive a lot of mail?

Laura: Right now, no. Well, because it's so convenient to use the e-mailsor instant communication or telephone.

Todd: Yeah, OK last question. What time do post offices open and close?

Laura: Well, it depends on the size of the post office. For large one, so,they work longer. Like from nine in the morning until six, so for a smallerone, from nine to five.

2/ READING: Going to the Post Office

For me, things never go very smoothly at my local post office. I'velearned that if you want to mail a letter , you'll have no problems. But if

things get more complicated than that, well, watch out!

Yesterday I went there to mail a small package and to pick up a book ofstamps. I waited my turn in line, and when I get up to the window, theclerk asks me, "What can I do for you?" "Well," I said, "I need a book no,make that a roll of stamps. And I need to send this package priority toSan Francisco." "You want insurance with that?" he asked me. "Uh, Idon't know, what do you recommend?" "Well," he said, "you can send itpriority with tracking if you want to see when it gets there, you can sendit insured if the contents are valuable, or you can do both." "Okay, I'lltake the insurance." "Then step aside to fill out the insurance form," hesaid, "and bring it back up to me when you're finished." With that, Iwas waved aside to fill out my form. "Next in line!" the clerk called. When I finished filling out the form, I waited patiently untilthe gentleman being waited on in front of me was finished, andthen stepped back up to the window. "Sorry," the clerk said, "I'm onbreak now. She can help you at the next window." Maybe it would bequicker just to drive my package to San Francisco.
