ILLEGAL TRADE WITH ANIMALS

The aim of the activity: To show students the life story of some kinds of animals threatened by an illegal trade.

STEP 1.Brief description of the activity:Make a brief brainstorming on the theme: do you poses an exotic animal at home? Do you know what country do these animals come from?Instruction (what you need to tell the students): Have any of you got an exotic pet at home? Do you know from which country do these animals originally come from? What do you think, what was their story before they got to you?

STEP 2.Brief description of the activity: Students are divided into three groups. Each group gets a set of pictures with the scenes of the illegal trade (Annex 1). They should set the pictures in a time order – showing the process of illegal trade with the animals or their body parts. The pictures should get the numbers 1-5 according to the ranking in the “story”.Teacher has the whole Annex 1, where he/she can check the pictures order and gets the information about the pictures. Pages 1-3 represent the sets of pictures to be cut and given to the students.Instruction (what you need to tell the students): Each group receives a set of images. Assign the images with the numbers 1-5, creating a story about the illegal trade with animals.

STEP 3.Brief description of the activity:Students take the numbers and try po place them on the worldmap (Annex 3). They estimate, in which part of the world the situation shown in the pictures usually happens. Teacher can use Annex 2 to check the correct answers.Instruction (what you need to tell the students): Once you have finished the story, write the numbers 1-5 in the world map, depending on where concrete part of the story, according to your opinion, took place.

Tools for the activity (everything you need to take to the classroom): Annex 1 – three sets of pictures in an envelope with the name of animal; pieces of paper with the numbers (1-5), Annex 2 – text for a teacher to check the correct answers, Annex 3 - world map(s)Estimated time (max. 40 min.): 15 minutesNotes: In the Step 2 students can use more of the same numbers, when they locate the same situation which happens at different places in the world. It is possible to use one big world map and place the numbers there, or we can provide one smaller map for each group. If you have enough time, pupils can read information from Annex 4.

The aim of the activity: To express and present the story demonstrated by the pictures.

STEP 1.Brief description of the activity: Students follow the pictures and create the story of the animal/product from the animals’ point of view. The whole story should fit to 1xA5 page, not more.Instruction (what you need to tell the students): In each group write a short story presented on the pictures. The animal shown on the picture should be story narrator. Narrator should describe the situation on the picture and also the experience from the position of an animal.

STEP 2.Brief description of the activity: At the end students read the story to the rest of the whole group, while presenting the pictures.Instruction (what you need to tell the students): Now read the story that you created based on the pictures to your classmates.

Tools for the activity (everything you need to take to the classroom): Paper and pencils, Annex 1Estimated time (max. 40 min.): 20 minutesNotes: Teacher can motivate students not to just describe the situations but also to take into account the reasons and thoughts of hunters, smugglers and buyers. It is also possible to use this task as homework – writing an essay (especially for older students).

Note: There is still a legal whale hunt (officially for a scientific purposes) – but most of the whales still die because of the meat request especially in Japan.

Annex 2ParrotThis kind of parrot lives in the Middle and Southern America, where it is caught and transported to the US or even to Europe, where people like to keep it as a house pet. The smugglers usually transport eggs and young birds in cars, boats and even planes.

RhinocerosIt is a typical African animal – one of the big mammals of the central and southern Africa, where rhinos are killed. The hunters cut their horns. Sometimes the trade is very difficult and one horn can travel all around the world to reach its destination. Nowadays it is especially Vietnam and China of course because rhino´s horn is an essential element of the Chinese medicine (although the effect of such a medicine is at least questionable).

WhaleThere are lots of the whale species all around the world. The biggest ones are usually caught in the cold parts of the oceans. The biggest producers are Norway, Japan and Iceland, but the production is usually ready for the Japanese consumers. The whale meat is a delicacy for them. There is still a legal whale hunt occurring - officially for scientific purposes.

ILLEGAL TRADE WITH ANIMALS

Annex 4

The international wildlife trade is a serious conservation problem, addressed by the United Nations’ Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which currently has 170 member countries called Parties.

There are lots of NGOs addressing the illegal trade with animals nowadays:

ASEAN Wildlife Enforcement Network (ASEAN-WEN)South Asia Wildlife Enforcement Network (SAWEN)Clark R. Bavin National Fish and Wildlife Forensic LaboratoryFREELAND FoundationNational Rifle Association [15]Species Survival NetworkTRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring networkWildlife Alliance

The illegal trade with animals is the third most profitable crime of the world (after drugs and weapons). But the hunters and snatchers at the beginning of the whole chain are not the richest people. The biggest amount of money goes to the top smugglers. The buyers of the animals or users of the products should be also rich, as the price for such an animal is usually very high.

The best we can do is not to be a part of the chain, especially not to become buyers of anything what seems to be a product of this illegal trade. We can also support the organisations working to stop these crimes (e.g. nowadays it is possible to adopt a rhino or a tiger, to join the projects all around the world as volunteers etc.)

Animals endangered:Well known examples – elephants (ivory), tigers (Chinese medicine, pelt), parrots (pets), monkey (pet, Chinese medicine), chameleons (pet, medicine), dolphins (Asian cuisine), crocodiles (leather), some sea and freshwater fish (pets, exotic cuisine)But a trade with cats, dogs and many other quite common species is also a serious problem in some parts of the world. Actually there is not a kind of animal on this planet that would be absolutely safe.
