With Your Generous Gifts Today, You Are Helping Illinois Medicine Create a Brilliant Tomorrow

On any given day, the people at the University of Illinois College of Medicine

and Hospital help to change some lives and save others. Those who are

affected often choose to make a difference themselves. And so, a chain

of giving is forged, a phenomenon that builds over months and years.

It’s easy and all too human to rush past this, caught up in the mundane

demands of life. Yet when we pause to see the impact, it’s amazing.

It’s something to anticipate and celebrate.

The University of Illinois community has had much to celebrate in fiscal

year 2011, as the Brilliant Futures campaign illuminated a path for the

institution that is teeming with possibility. Your giving raised more than

$250 million for the College of Medicine and hospital, and the pages

in this publication detail some of the quiet heroes in our midst, whose

donations are creating the future for our campuses, our medical students

and residents, our professors and researchers.

A new gift from an alumnus from the Class of 1943? Yes, that’s the kind

of people we are. Medical help for children reeling from abuse? A must-do.

Faculty members funding scholarships? Naturally. Our chain of giving accepts

all ages, all backgrounds, just like the university, which trains more physicians

than any other institution in the country.

Beginning on page 24, our Honor Roll recognizes all of you who have made

contributions between July 1, 2010, and June 30, 2011. We hope you’ll join

us in pausing to cheer, and dream. Today, our community has given its very

best. Tomorrow, the world will never be the same.

Dear Friend of Illinois Medicine,

We are both proud and grateful to provide you with our donor report for Illinois Medicine’s 2010–

2011 fiscal year. Generous supporters such as yourself are critical to the ability of the college and

hospital to fulfill our mission of educating the doctors of the future, making high-quality health care

accessible to patients throughout Illinois, and performing advanced research that will lead to new

and better treatments.

Thanks to you, Illinois Medicine exceeded our $250 million goal during the Brilliant Futures fundraising

campaign that will conclude at the end of this calendar year. This is an extraordinary achievement,

and it would not have been possible without you and every member of the Illinois Medicine community.

Each donor’s gift has an important impact, and you are enabling Illinois Medicine to meet the educational

and medical needs of students and patients across the state. Although the college’s campuses, the

hospital’s clinics and our supporters are spread throughout Illinois, we are unified in our commitment

to this endeavor.

Donor support is helping the college to revise the traditional medical school curriculum to meet the

educational needs of 21st century students. Charitable giving is also essential to the hospital’s ability

to provide world-class health care to underserved patient populations that would otherwise not have

access. You can see charitable giving at work every day in our clinics, on our inpatient units and out

in the community, where our clinicians are involved in a wide variety of outreach efforts. We also hear

the gratitude of patients and their families for our programs and the donations that support them.

Many patients are well aware that it is the generosity of alumni and dedicated donors that underpins

the care they receive.

Rest assured we and our colleagues in the Illinois Medicine community are also well aware of the vital

role donors play in enhancing the care and treatment of the underserved, in promoting advances in new

knowledge and in ensuring the education of tomorrow’s health care professionals. Your generosity and

unselfish commitment make what we do possible. Thank you again.

Sincerely,

Today, alumni give backTamara Green, Class of ’14, is the

first Bergmann Scholarship recipient. She is studying for both her medical degree

and a master’s degree in public health.

His resume was colorful, and grueling: testing

canned peas for sweetness at Libby’s, waiting

tables at a women’s residence hall, working for

the Illinois Research Hospital, making 85 cents

an hour at LaSalle Station Railroad Express. He

worked in a library under a program called the

National Youth Administration, part of the New

Deal’s Works Progress Administration. And when

the war came, he enlisted in the Navy, which

picked up the tab for the rest of his medical

education in exchange for serving as an officer

physician aboard a U.S. Navy landing ship tank.

“I jumped at the chance to go in the Navy,

and I had no financial worries after that,” says

Bergmann, who was posted to New Guinea in

1944. In addition to the Navy, Bergmann served

in both the Army Reserves and the Illinois National

Guard, retiring from the latter at the rank of

brigadier general.

To take some financial pressure off today’s

medical students, Bergmann has given $100,000

to endow the Dr. Harry W. and Ruth M. Bergmann

Scholarship, which yields about $4,000 per

year in aid.

“I was fortunate enough to have money left over

when I retired,” he says. “I knew that I couldn’t

have afforded to go to any other medical school,

and I had worked quite a bit while I was there.

I hope to help someone else,” says Bergmann,

whose education also was partially supported

by scholarships.

The first Bergmann Scholarship recipient is Tamara

Green, Class of ’14, from downstate Edwardsville,

Ill., who’s studying for both her medical degree and

a master’s degree in public health. She’s also part

of the Urban Medicine program, which prepares

physician-leaders to serve in urban communities.

Since her undergraduate days at Washington

University in St. Louis, Green has had a strong

interest in health disparities and working with at-risk

youth. She plans to seek a residency in internal

medicine/pediatrics.

“I remember, as a child, being sick and trying to

hide it so that my parents would not be burdened

by the financial costs of going to the physician,”

Green says. “No child should feel this way.”

Like Bergmann, Green has always worked two

or three jobs to support her education, and she

says the Bergmann Scholarship helped relieve

that pressure.

“This scholarship,” Green says, “helps me to solely

focus on my studies without having to worry about

coming home after a 12-hour day at school and

then heading to work.”

Bergmann, who had a long and distinguished

career as a board-certified obstetrician-gynecol-

ogist, had always wanted to be a doctor, but it

wasn’t an obvious or easy path when he arrived

at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

in the late 1930s. He needed a vocation that

would earn him a living in hard times. There was

no room for entering pre-meds when he enrolled

and the only spot available to him was for ceramic

engineering, so he decided to be an engineer.

Fortunately for the medical profession, he found

that the required physics courses weren’t his cup

of tea, and at that point he was allowed to switch

his focus to pre-med.

Bergmann and his wife, Ruth, were married

for 40 years when she passed away in 2004.

He has two children, two stepchildren, seven

grandchildren and five great-grandchildren—

all of whom he took on a Disney cruise in 2007.

Now, he’s helping send students like Green on

a voyage to their dreams.

“I’m glad I’m in a position to help,” he says.

Tomorrow, at-risk youth get the health care they need

Today, a family keeps a promise

Martin Borhani (left) has been invested as the first Theodore & Joanna Drugas

Chair in Vascular Surgery.

When Theodore “Ted” Drugas ’47, ’49, MD,

was killed in a 2010 automobile accident, his

three children knew what they had to do. Their

father was 85 years old when he died, and for

14 years the widower had known how he wanted

to honor the memory of his late wife, Joanna

(Stefanos), who passed on before him in 1996

from diabetes complications.

“Our mother had vascular disease and problems

with her legs,” recalls Diane Drugas Keen, MD, Res

’92, a general surgeon at Elmhurst Memorial Hos-

pital and Adventist GlenOaks Hospital in Glendale

Heights, Ill. “My dad is forever grateful for the care

and empathy she received from Dr. James Shuler,”

the UIC vascular surgeon (since retired) who

performed a bypass on Joanna Drugas in the

early 1990s.

So late last year, in their parents’ memory and

at their father’s request, Peter, George and

Diane Drugas created the Theodore & Joanna

Drugas Endowed Chair in Vascular Surgery at

the College of Medicine in Chicago. Their family

gift to the department of surgery is $300,000 for

the 2011 fiscal year. The new chair will help

the College retain the best and brightest faculty

in a very competitive market.

The university has invested Martin Borhani, MD,

as the Drugas chair. Borhani was an understudy

of Shuler, who spent two years in the research

laboratory studying gene therapy for intimal

hyperplasia. The Drugas siblings attended the

investiture last December and met Borhani, who

also is chief of the University of Illinois Hospital’s

vascular surgery division.

“I’m honored to represent the Drugas family and

to build on the legacy that Dr. Shuler created,”

Borhani says.

“Martin is a fantastic clinician, a clinical superstar,”

praises Enrico Benedetti, MD, the surgery depart-

ment head who has known Borhani since his

surgical training began at the College nearly

20 years ago. “He is one of the best technical

surgeons in Chicago. Even as an intern, he was

remarkable—reliable, efficient and good with his

hands.” Perhaps more importantly for this role,

“he has a passion to teach young students and

is a great teacher,” Benedetti adds, which is why

Borhani was chosen this past June to direct the

surgical residency program with its 66 students.

(Borhani also is the recipient of the Olga Jonasson

Award for teaching excellence.)

Borhani has developed a different type of bypass

procedure to restore blood flow in the lower limbs

of diabetes patients. He works closely with William

Ted and Joanna Drugas

Ennis, DO, director of UIC’s section of wound

healing and tissue repair and one of the Midwest’s

foremost wound specialists.

“While clinical and technical skills are mandatory

for a university to impart, moral fortitude, compas-

sion and strong ethics are skills that are impossible

to teach,” Ennis says. “It is rare in medicine today

to find someone who could demonstrate a higher

ethical standard than Martin Borhani.”

Together, the duo has developed a multidisciplinary

intervention method for managing critical limb

ischemia, combining wound healing with stem-cell

treatment and mechanical means. Their process is

saving legs below the knee at an 86 percent rate

over the past five years—“that’s double the normal

rate,” Benedetti notes.

Prior to being recruited to the College by Benedetti

in 2007 to replace Shuler as vascular surgery

division chief, Borhani ran a successful private

practice for eight years, affiliated with Christ Hospi-

tal in south suburban Oak Lawn, Ill. “From

an economic standpoint, Martin didn’t need the

university,” Benedetti explains. “He wanted to train,

to ‘give back.’”

Which is exactly what Ted Drugas wanted to

do: give back. With his children’s blessing,

that wish is being fulfilled.

Tomorrow, surgeons in training learn from one of the very best

Jim Perry with his wife, Molly

Today, a friendship is forged

Jim Perry (left) and Damiano Rondelli, MD, share a commitment to ease the burden

of families dealing with cancer.

When Jim Perry and Damiano Rondelli, MD,

met in a prayer group at a Chicago Catholic

church almost 10 years ago, neither of them

could have imagined the impact their emerging

friendship would have on patients and families

at the University of Illinois Hospital.

Perry is co-founder and managing director of

Madison Dearborn Partners, an investment firm

in Chicago. Rondelli directs the stem cell program

at the hospital. Over the last decade, their friend-

ship, forged at Saint Clement Church in the city’s

Lincoln Park neighborhood, has grown as the two

grappled with the message of the Gospel and its

call to action.

Hearing Rondelli’s stories of the families who

struggle with cancer is spurring Jim and Molly,

his wife, to donate via the Perry Family Foundation

$500,000 over five years to improve the quality

of life for patients who need stem cell or bone

marrow transplants. As a catalyst for additional

fundraising efforts, Perry challenged both the

hospital and the Office of Advancement to match

the gift, raising its potential value to $1.5 million.

“Dr. Rondelli’s passion for his work in the stem

cell program was a motivation for us to make

our gift,” says Perry. “But it was Damiano’s

commitment to serving the poor, and the

University of Illinois Hospital’s mission to serve

the poorest of the poor with care and this leading-

edge medical technology, that resounded most

with us and our own aspirations to respond to the

imperatives of our faith.”

The Perry family’s gift will be used to finance

three initiatives: funding for stem cell research,

remodeling of the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit

at the hospital and funding for the Perry Family

Assistance Program, an endowment fund for

patients who cannot afford the co-payment for

insurance or transplant drugs.

The research conducted by Rondelli focuses on

improving the chances of a successful outcome

for transplanting stem cells. Currently, in order to

have a transplant, the donor must be perfectly

matched to a recipient, based on human leukocyte

antigen typing. Siblings and the International

Bone Marrow Donor Registry are current sources

for donors.

“But only 25 percent of siblings have a chance

to be compatible with another sibling,” notes

Rondelli. “In the lab, we are trying to understand

how to successfully transplant stem cells despite

differences in the HLA. This would help expand

the donor base for a successful bone marrow

transplant.”

The gift will also help to fund the remodeling of

the hospital’s 10-bed inpatient Bone Marrow

Transplant Unit, a key improvement for both

patients and their families. “Patients who have a

transplant stay at the hospital for a month or longer,

so it’s important to have comfortable surroundings,”

says Rondelli.

The renovation promises to give the unit a hotel-like

atmosphere: state-of-the-art headwalls systems

to improve clinical patient care; new cabinetry for

patient and supply storage; brighter surroundings

with new furniture such as patient recliner chairs,

visitor chairs and overnight beds; and new audio-

visual and computer technology so patients can

stay connected with the outside world.

The final component of the gift is the assistance

program, a fund to help patients with co-pays,

prescription and transportation costs not covered

by insurance.

Perry believes that philanthropy is a “next chapter”

in his life and his family’s life together. “We’re all

given gifts in life, and supporting the hospital and

Dr. Rondelli’s work is a wonderfully compelling

way to give back,” he says. “Hopefully, it will raise

awareness for others to join us in this effort.”

Rondelli is glad his friend has heeded the call.

“Thanks to Jim Perry, we are able to grow this

life-saving program for patients.”

Tomorrow, families find relief during a stressful time

Today, an alum remembers his mentor

Maurice Pescitelli, PhD, so inspired one of his students that the resulting grant is making the Virtual Anatomy Lab a model for the nation.

IMAX films give moviegoers a vivid experience

that lasts an hour or two. But Mike Doyle’s virtual-

reality gift to anatomy students has the potential

to impact entire generations of patients.

And it all began with a course Doyle took a couple

decades ago while he was a graduate student at

the University of Illinois in Urbana, a class taught by

assistant professor Maurice Pescitelli, PhD.

“Dr. Pescitelli was my embryology professor during

my first semester of graduate school,” says Doyle,

’83, PhD ’91. “We wrote our first grant together

before that semester was over, working on a pro-

gram to help teach embryology using computers.”

In the mid-1990s, Doyle collaborated with Pescitelli

and Harvard embryologist Betsy Williams to create

a large knowledge base of embryology information

that could be explored online and with which users

could interact in a detailed way. That project even-

tually inspired the later development of the Web-

based Eolas Virtual Anatomy Lab, which provides

medical and allied health students a new, more

visual way to learn anatomy. This online navigator

allows users to click on a part of the body to see

it in more detail and to learn about its structure.

But it wasn’t until Doyle gave the university a

four-year, $500,000 grant through his family’s

Buonacorsi Foundation that AnatLab, in its current

form, took shape. “With Mike’s grant, we were able

to build upon the technology developed at Eolas

and make many enhancements to the information,”

says Pescitelli, UIC instructor of medical gross

anatomy. Over the last four years, the grant allowed

Pescitelli to hire medical students as research

assistants who painstakingly outlined countless

detailed anatomical structures.

“With AnatLab, students can now view finely

detailed anatomy in an MRI or CT point of view,

similar to how they will view it during their profes-

sional careers,” says Pescitelli.

Doyle’s career as an inventor of next-generation

Web technology and 3-D biomedical visualiza-

tion was launched as a result of research projects

started at the University of Illinois. “In one of my first

assignments in graduate school, I realized I needed

to learn how to program,” says Doyle. “I got into

programming as a hobby and then that hobby

took over my life.”

Doyle served as a faculty member at UIC from

1989 to 1993 before becoming the director of

the Center for Knowledge Management at the

University of California, San Francisco. There,

he led a research team that developed patented

technology which for the first time, enabled embed-

ded interactive programs to run in Web pages.

Doyle founded Eolas Technologies, Inc. in 1994,

and as CEO of Iomas Research, a subsidiary

of Eolas, he is the architect of the company’s

research and development efforts.

Doyle’s newest goal is the 2015 opening of

the National Museum of Health and Medicine

in Chicago, a center for public education that

will both feature virtual exhibits and provide a

resource to the academic community and

researchers worldwide.

As a result of Doyle’s gift, Pescitelli and a small

team of medical students have also taken the

Virtual Anatomy Lab a step further. “We can

now use data from AnatLab to reconstruct any

anatomical structure virtually in 3-D, making it

easier to visualize,” he says. “These Quicktime

VR [Virtual Reality] movies are a depiction of a

dissection that can be manipulated and viewed

from different angles.”

Other planned enhancements to the AnatLab

include providing links to histology and auto-

mating the creation of the QuickTime VR movies

on demand.

“UIC has always been a leader in crossing borders

between various disciplines that are synergistic,

such as information technology and biomedical

sciences,” says Doyle. “I can’t think of a better

place to support this kind of work.”

Tomorrow, our anatomy lab undergoes a quiet revolution

Today, a couple honors a trusted doctor

The compassionate care by Allan Crandell, MD, led to the creation of a scholarship in his name at the Urbana-Champaign campus.

In the latter years of their lives, Martin and Nelle

Wagner were cared for and comforted by Allan

Crandell, MD. In addition to providing them with

medical treatment, Crandell established a strong

relationship with the Wagners, particularly Martin,

that was marked by sensitivity, understanding,

respect and dedication to their well-being.

To honor Crandell and encourage young physi-

cians to follow his example, Martin Wagner made

a bequest gift to the University of Illinois College of

Medicine in Urbana-Champaign to establish the

Allan E. Crandell, MD, Award for Compassionate

Care. The award is given annually to a graduating

medical student who demonstrates extraordinary

potential to provide compassionate health care.

“It’s something we feel very strongly needs to be

encouraged in medical care and education and

that we hope will be recognized as an extremely

important part of health care,” says Martha Wagner

Weinberg, PhD, the Wagners’ daughter, a consultant

who served as an executive with one of the coun-

try’s premier health care systems.

The Wagners first sought out Crandell, a psychiatrist,

in the early 1990s for assistance with aging issues.

Typifying the kindness and conscientiousness he

showed them, Crandell repeatedly went out of

his way to visit Nelle in the hospital during the final

weeks of her life to help sort out her medications

and provide her with a friendly, reassuring face.

After Nelle passed away in 1998 at age 88,

Crandell continued to work with Martin, guiding

him through the loss of his wife of 60 years and

the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which fell on Wagner’s

90th birthday, as well as advanced aging and

end-of-life issues. Along with a home health care

team, Crandell helped Martin to remain active

and engaged and to live in his own home until

he passed away in 2009 at age 97.

“In addition to providing superb medical advice,

Dr. Crandell brought hope, respect, empathy,

superb listening skills and compassion to every

encounter with my father. His support and

encouragement helped inspire my father to

continue to lead a full, rich life,” says Wagner,

who traveled to England with her father, a Rhodes

Scholar, in 2003 to celebrate the program’s

100th anniversary.

“It was the best form of medicine that could be

practiced. It was beyond treatment into caring,”

Weinberg adds.

Nelle was an editor for Ladies Home Journal and

the UIUC College of Business in addition to raising

Martha and her brother, John. Martin worked

for the National Labor Relations Board and the

Louisville (Ky.) Labor-Management Committee

before coming to Urbana to be the director of

UIUC’s Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations,

now the School of Labor and Employment Relations.

During his life, Martin made many generous gifts

to UIUC, supporting the Krannert Center for the

Performing Arts, the library and the School of

Music as well as the Institute of Labor and Indus-

trial Relations, where he helped endow funds to

support a professorship, graduate fellowships and

guest lectureships and an educational center. In

addition to the bequest to establish the Crandell

Award, he also made an estate gift to establish the

Parkland College Foundation Gloria Valenti Award

in honor of the leader of his home care team.

“To have an award in your honor is just a wonder-

ful, wonderful thing. I’m humbled,” says Crandell,

who practiced in the greater Champaign area and

was a clinical instructor in the College of Medicine

at Urbana-Champaign for nearly two decades.

Since 2005, he has practiced in underserved

communities, caring for patients in Anchorage,

Alaska, and Native American communities in

the Southwest.

“When I left Champaign-Urbana for Alaska in 2005,

I asked my patients what really worked,” Crandell

reflects. “Unfailingly, they told me clearly that what

was important is that we had forged a relationship.”

Tomorrow, doctors keep the compassion in caregiving

Today, UI-Rockford program takes off

Mark Kotnour, now retired from Boeing, is helping the Giddens Foundation and the U of I fight child abuse in the Rockford area.

Abuse of children is heartbreaking enough.

Not being able to prove it, and stop it, can be

the final straw.

The proof often lies in interpreting suspicious

injuries to kids as inflicted rather than accidental

or random, which takes special knowledge,

equipment and a friendly environment in which

to do an exam. In 2008, the University of Illinois

College of Medicine at Rockford helped formalize

a program to provide those components, called

the Medical Evaluation Response Initiative Team

(MERIT). And a grant this fiscal year from the

Thomas V. Giddens Jr. Foundation made MERIT

literally better equipped for duty.

“There are more kids who die of child abuse than

of childhood cancers,” says Martin Lipsky, MD,

regional dean of the College of Medicine in

Rockford. “Grants like the one from the Giddens

Foundation really help make this program solvent

and give it a leg up.”

The $50,000 grant was the result of a perfect fit

with the foundation’s mission—to support activities

and programs that benefit neglected or abused

children—and a dash of serendipity springing

from the decision of Mark Kotnour, one of three

foundation directors, to move to the Rockford

area from Arizona in 2007, the same year the

foundation began making grants. Now retired

from the Boeing Co., Kotnour was a good friend

of Tom Giddens, who was an abused child himself

but became a very successful businessman in the

aerospace industry. Upon his death 10 years ago,

he willed his estate to set up the foundation. Since

moving to Rockford, Kotnour has been instrumental

in funneling about $400,000 to programs battling

child abuse in the community.

Raymond Davis, MD ’84, the sole physician on the

small MERIT staff, says awareness of child abuse

and the medical expertise needed to confront it

have come a long way since he came to Rockford

in 1988 as a pediatrician and began volunteering

to perform medical evaluations at the Carrie Lynn

Children’s Center, a child advocacy service. At

the time, such exams were “still completely up

to whoever was available and whatever level of

expertise they had,” says Davis. “In addition, a lot

of physical abuse was missed, because physicians

who saw children in trauma were just not trained

to recognize all the symptoms.”

A grant through DCFS and affiliation with the

medical college gave the MERIT program a

dedicated space for exams, contributed salaries

for Davis and three other staff members, and

helped fund both their ongoing education on abuse

evaluation and classes to teach medical personnel

about child abuse. But the program was working

with old and temperamental equipment—one

crucial colposcope for doing exams, for example,

was 10 years old and the other one twice as old.

Borrowed or leftover clinic items like exam tables

were rusted and worn.

The Giddens grant’s biggest single contribution,

a new colposcope, gives MERIT a state-of-the-art

tool to perform more effective exams and, for the

first time, record findings to take to court or be

shared with other experts to confirm a finding. It

also will enable nurse practitioner Lori Thompson,

who manages the program, to go from 20 hours

a week to full time, and a nurse from four days a

week to full time. Other purchases are small ones

for small people: exam tables built for kids, to

make them more comfortable in a stressful time.

Kotnour is happy to set up the program for

bigger things. “They’re really providing

breakthrough medical evaluations in the

awareness and the prosecutions of

offenders,” he says. “The prevention,

research and education they do are

invaluable to help with the problem.”

Alumnus Stephen Cullinan’s gift to fund a professorship gives Peoria students a step up with simulation training

Stephen Cullinan, MD ’72, remembers that when

he was a medical student, instruction in diagnosis

varied in quality depending on who was overseeing

his clerkships. “You might have a good resident or

a not-so-good resident,” he says.

To help better train future medical students and

residents alike in diagnosing patients, Cullinan

has made a major gift to the University of Illinois

College of Medicine at Peoria to endow the Duane

and Mary Cullinan Professorship in Simulation

Outcomes. Named for Cullinan’s late parents,

the professorship is being established to provide

leadership for the Jump Trading Simulation and

Education Center, currently under construction at

OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. Duane

Cullinan headed the board and Mary Cullinan

volunteered at the hospital.

A joint project between the College of Medicine,

Peoria campus, and OSF St. Francis, the 48,000-

square-foot facility will include computer simulations

to help residents learn diagnostic techniques and

procedural skills; surgical simulations in laparoscopy

and robotics; and actors trained to be “simulated

patients,” who will present symptoms and respond

to examination questions and procedures.

“They’ve really got it down to a science,” Cullinan

says. “They’ll be able to quantify and qualify how

well you do things, such as how to listen to a

heart. Forty years ago, we couldn’t do that.”

Sara Rusch, MD, Res ’81, regional dean of the

College of Medicine at Peoria, says Cullinan’s gift

will enable the college to recruit an exceptional

physician to design and implement the center’s

programming. “We’re greatly appreciative of Dr.

Cullinan’s commitment to the health of patients

in the Peoria community, both through his leader-

ship of his oncology practice here and his gift

for simulation outcomes.”

The gift further reflects Cullinan’s already profound

commitment to the College of Medicine. He and

his late wife, Theresa S. Falcon-Cullinan, MD,

previously endowed other professorships in patient

safety and obstetrics and gynecology at the

Chicago campus.

“I was very grateful for my education. I decided

that since it had given me the foundation to do

well, it would be appropriate to make these gifts

to support the school,” Cullinan says.

His ties to his community and family legacy are

reflected in the gift to the Peoria campus, which

Cullinan made on behalf of his family, including

his brother, Michael Cullinan, and sister, Elizabeth

“Libby” Mathers. His great-great-grandfather,

Richard Cullinan, emigrated from Ireland to the

Peoria area, settling on a farm there in 1850.

His father, Duane Cullinan ’37, JD ’41, was born

and raised in Tremont, Ill., now a Peoria suburb,

and was captain of the U of I track team, breaking

Olympic legend Jesse Owens’ record for the

50-yard hurdles.

Retaining a lifelong enthusiasm for Illinois athletics,

Duane Cullinan served as president of the U of I

Athletic Board and was selected as the university’s

Man of the Year in 1980, two years before his

death. “He was a very devout Catholic and believed

in sharing. He said he had success and he needed

to share it. I hope I can carry on that tradition,”

Stephen Cullinan says.

Mary Cullinan also combined a love of sports with

community service in addition to raising her children.

Besides her work at OSF St. Francis, she volun-

teered at a farm for boys who were wards of the

state, raising funds and visiting the youths on their

birthdays. She also was an avid golfer who continued

playing into her late 70s. She passed away in 2004.

Stephen Cullinan says his gift will be his family’s

legacy to the school and the community the

Cullinan clan has called home for more than 150

years. “Patient simulation is going to be the wave

of the future. Now my mom and dad will be part

of it. They’ve passed on, but they’ll be looking on,

and we’ll train a lot of doctors.”

Patient simulation is

going to be the wave of the

future. Now, my mom and dad

will be part of it.

Today, a professor reaches out

Henry Dove, MD (center): “We as faculty have an obligation to ensure people of diverse

backgrounds come into the discipline.”

Henry W. Dove, MD, has spent decades training

the next generation of physicians. His devotion to

their education is apparent in just about everything

he does. Well, just about everything.

One aspect of his dedication has largely been kept

quiet. Since Dove began providing his support to

the Brilliant Futures campaign, he has made annual

gifts to the College of Medicine Scholarship Fund

at the Chancellor’s Circle level.

While it is certainly not uncommon for faculty to

give to the university, giving directly to students

is a less-utilized approach.

Why contribute?

“We as faculty have an obligation to ensure that

people of diverse backgrounds come into the

discipline,” Dove says. “Through participation in the

scholarship fund, faculty can help assure that the

best and brightest are recruited into the physician

workforce without regard to cost as a deterrent.”

As the associate dean for graduate medical

education and the designated institutional officer

at the College of Medicine in Chicago, Dove over-

sees 125 training programs involving 850 residents

and fellows training at 15 different locations.

Within the UIC Department of Psychiatry, he also

teaches and carries a clinical caseload. In October,

Dove added the role of associate head of psy-

chiatric education and gave up his duties as the

director of clinical services in psychiatry.

Perhaps another reason Dove identifies with

students is because, even though he is an

administrator, clinician and teacher, he also is a

student himself. He enrolled in the university’s

master’s degree program in health professions

education in 2009, and expects to finish the

program in about two years. “Being a physician

is a lifelong learning endeavor. Out of necessity,

you keep pushing the envelope,” he says.

Dove’s connection to education started early.

“My interest and love of education stemmed

from my parents—both of whom were denied

opportunities to attend college. There were seven

of us, and they pushed all of us to excel in college

and our careers,” recalls Dove.

As is the case with many aspiring physicians,

Dove paid for his education with a combination

of scholarships and loans. He estimates that

scholarships covered between 60 and 70 percent

of his educational costs, leaving him with loans

totaling about $30,000. “It is nothing like these

students have now. Most of these students are

graduating with $150,000 to $200,000 in debt,”

he says.

A typical example is Olga Kantor, a fourth-year

medical student at the Chicago campus. She

plans to graduate in May with $220,000 in loans.

But her debt load would have been even higher

without a $12,500 scholarship from the College

of Medicine. “Since that scholarship was offered

to me on admission, it was actually one of the

reasons I chose UIC over other medical schools,”

Kantor says.

After graduation, Kantor hopes to earn a spot in

a general-surgery residency program followed by

a fellowship in breast surgery for cancer patients.

“I just fell in love with the field. It is a very patient-

centered model,” she says.

Brandon Bond, a third-year student at the Peoria

campus, shares Kantor’s enthusiasm for medicine.

Bond, who received $20,000 from the scholarship

fund, has dreamed of becoming a physician since

he was a child. He made that decision after credit-

ing physicians with saving his grandmother’s life.

Bond hopes to become a pediatric neurosurgeon

so he can “make a profound difference in some-

one’s life—the way some very special doctors

have in mine.”

The dedication of Kantor, Bond and other students

humbles Dove. “Despite the costs and sacrifice

that many students encounter in choosing medicine

as a career, they still choose it,” he says. “There is

still a tremendous desire to treat pain and suffering.

How can you not be impressed by their resolve

and not want to extend a helping hand?”

Tomorrow, more students have the financial opportunity to flourish

For Henry Dove, funding scholarships ensures economic hardships are no roadblock for diverse students

Recognizing that the core resource for any college is its faculty, the Brilliant Futures campaign

has stressed the importance of faculty support in the form of endowed and term chairs and

professorships. To hold a named appointment is an endorsement of intellectual achievement, teaching excellence,

and dedication to learning. These funds help the college recruit and retain the best scholars and teachers.
