“I appreciate the comprehensive instruction offered by Art Instruction

Schools. The critique provided by the instructors

became more and more useful as I continued

through each series of lessons. I believe a big part of my success as an artist is due to the in-depth training

I received from Art Instruction Schools.”

– The Art of Larry Smitherman –

“I knew that taking Art Instruction Schools course would begin my career

in the art field. I was right. The course proved to be excellent.”

Larry Smitherman, a real Texan and an outstanding artist and designer. No cowboy here, Larry would rather sketch and paint a cowboy than be one.

At the age of 15, Larry took it upon himself and enrolled in Art Instruction Schools, since formal art training was limited in this Southwest area of the country. “I knew that taking Art Instruction Schools course would begin my career in the art field. I was right. The course proved to be excellent.” Even to this day Larry periodically reviews some of his old textbooks that provided such a solid and realistic base of instruction.

Larry went on to complete his college education at Colorado Institute of Art primarily in illustration and commercial art. Illustration was always one of Larry’s first loves and he had successful stints at agencies while completing work for oil and gas companies and banks and then later as the designer for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Magazine. This pushed Larry into another field…magazine and book design which he really enjoyed doing.

Larry continued to work in charcoal and later acrylic, mostly character studies, which have become a dominant feature of Larry’s most recent work. But, like many successful artists, Larry felt a great desire to return to his first artistic expression, that of figurative imagery. He turned his time and energy to painting people. He likes to start with a pencil drawing before rendering the full color painting. This allows him to solve some the the lighting and shadows. He uses 300# cold press natural white watercolor paper. The heavy weight paper allows him to to pour impasto into areas of the piece to create an entirely different look. He also prefers to create his own gesso panels because the visable brush marks add spontaneity and individuality to each piece.

Working with acrylic on paper, while using simple lines and colors, Larry draws the viewer into the emotions and personality of each portrait he paints. His style captures the character of his subjects with engaging complexity of dimension. There is a tactile feel to his figures, creating what Larry calls a “virtual sculpture”. The viewer of Larry’s work is drawn to his style, which captures depth and personality of those he paints.

With good working relationships forming all around him, Larry and his wife Marlene took the next big step and opened his own studio, Smitherman Graphic Design & Illustration, which also led to his becoming Art Director of the highly regarded Southwestern Art Magazine.

As a multi-national award winner in the fields of design and creativity in commercial and book design and paintings, Larry states “I owe my real beginnings to Art Instruction Schools. This is where my education began. If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing”.

“When I start a new painting, I still use the sketching and layout

techniques I learned from Art Instruction Schools.”

Larry is well represented in galleries and permanent collections across the Southwest. He is the recipient of the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award and inducted into the Hall of Fame from The Art Institute of Colorado. But most satisfying in Larry’s extensive career is his community involvement where Larry continues to use his work to support such important foundations as The Muscular Dystrophy Association, Make a Wish Foundation, and Safe Place for battered and abused women.

Larry Smitherman, is an outstanding artist and human being. Art Instruction Schools is proud to salute Larry as our Grand Prize Award Winner for 2009 in the Professional Category and the successful and multi-talented artist he is.

2009 Winners

CONGRATULATIONS to all who competed in our 95th Annual Art Competition. This year we received over 600 entries – representing artists from almost every state in the US, as well as Canada and Puerto Rico.

All 35 winning images have been faithfully reproduced here, although greatly reduced in size. As always, the full size art is very impressive. Congratulations to all the winners!

We received so many good entries it was very difficult to arrive at the top 35. Each of the 60 artists listed here received a Finalist Award this year. Their artwork was included in the top 10% of all entries received and made it into the final round of judging. Congratulations to you all!

We hope you will enter the next Annual Art Competition… and we hope you will be among the winners published in the next issue of ILLUSTRATOR magazine. Keep up the great work – the world needs more artists.

The 2009 Grand Purchase Prize Winner is Jvan Chinea, from Angeles, Puerto Rico. Jvan’s exceptional prize winning print is shown to the right.

CHARLES SCHULZ CARTOON ART SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION WINNERS FOR 2009

Over the years, Charles Schulz has been an inspiration to us all. He created a world of innocence – and insight – while making us laugh and reflect on the little truths we find in our daily lives. He did this as a Master Cartoonist, every day, year after year, because he loved the feeling of being creative. He never tired of his life’s work and he continued to push himself creatively throughout his entire career. He will be an inspiration for many years to come.

Through a special endowment fund, Art Instruction Schools offers a unique opportunity to three current students who show interest, technical skill and creativity while working within the “cartoon” format. One full scholarship and two half scholarships are awarded each year, to students at or above Lesson 7.

The winning entries for the 2009 Competition are shown here. CONGRATULATIONS to:

Full Scholarship Serene Chia Kernersville, NC Half Scholarship Sandra Almonacid Palestine, TX Half Scholarship Hector Curriel Sioux Falls, SD

Fifty-two more students made the Finalist level in the 2009 Charles Schulz Cartoon Art Scholarship Competition. Keep up the good work. Your cartoons were very well done.

Finalist Award Winners

Over 200 aspiring cartoonists sent in entries this year. We were pleased to see the high quality and varied styles represented in your entries. You all should feel proud to follow in the footsteps of Charles Schulz. He was an Art Instruction Schools student too, just like you, and dreamed of being a professional cartoonist for many, many years… So, keep working on your cartoon concepts.
