In a country of 17,508 islands known as the 4th mostpopulous nation with 230 million citizens and among them are 88%Muslims, H.E. Kristiarto Legowo, Ambassador Extraordinary andPlenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to the Philippines stands outas a devoted Catholic, exemplary diplomat of vision and integrity whod l d h id l f P il S k i dadvocates tolerance and the state ideology of Pancasila, a Sanskrit word

for the five principles of belief in one and only one God, just and civilizedhumanity, unity, democracy and social justice.

A presage for an illustrious career began with theairline industry’s loss and the diplomatic corps’ gain. The youngest childamong a brood of ten in his hometown of Java, he has always dreamt oftravelling the world while growing up. His father, a teacher has taughthim discipline, hardwork and the passion to adamantly pursue his dreams.p , p y pTo visit the different places around the globe, Ambassador Legowooriginally had his heart set on becoming a pilot, however, he learned thathe could not move forward with this vocation since he had to wearglasses. Thus, upon earning a Bachelor’s degree in Social and PoliticalScience major in International Relations at the University of Gadja Madain Yogyakarta, Indonesia, he took a 1-year diplomatic course in theMinistry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia and deliberatelychose to be a diplomat.

His determination to follow his ultimate goals had ledto more than satiating his curiosity for discovering different culturesacross the seas, it has led him to the privilege of representing his country, enhancing its socio-political relations with other nations and promotingits rich heritage, economic growth and security through ASEAN, Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC)and United Nation’s Security Council, PBC (Peace BuildingCommission) and Climate Change Conference.

Ambassador Legowo’s first official posting as adiplomat was at the Vatican City. He felt fortunate to serve his country atthe same time fulfill his religious obligations and appreciate the richhistory and architecture of Rome.

His next assignment was in Indonesia’s PermanentRepresentative Office to the United Nations in New York. “My exposurein the U.N. is considered as every junior diplomat’s dream because thein the U.N. is considered as every junior diplomat s dream because thePermanent Mission to UN is the best training ground a diplomat couldever have. I have learned a lot of things because almost every day, I aminvolved in various levels of negotiations,” he stated.

He then served as the Deputy Chief of Mission in theEmbassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Canberra, Australia, which isone of the important neighbors of Indonesia, prior to his appointment inthe Philippines.

For his success in international diplomacy, he looks upto his country’s late Ali Alatas, former Foreign Minister for elevatingIndonesia’s foreign policy and Former Foreign Minister, N. HassanWirajuda. “Both taught me how to make the right decisions at the righttime and the right place. They also taught me to make accurate judgmenton situations that would affect the national interest of the Republic ofIndonesia,” Ambassador Legowo expounded.

Being a family man and a devoted Catholic, he is happythat his wife and children are supportive of his calling and when timepermits they spend time together to go to church, play musicalinstruments and engage in sports such as tennis and golf. Mostimportantly, just like his father, Ambassador Legowo hands over theinvaluable and greatest legacy to his children --- to be sensitive to theneeds of others, serve one’s country and staunchly follow one’s vision inlife.

DREAMS OF FLIGHTJohn Michael Yeo

At first glance, he can be mistaken for a Koreanpop star and one of the boy band members of Super Juniors, jettisoning on a private jet, sporting a sleek haircut and avant-gardefuturistic pop outfit, strutting fancy moves on stage and stealing thehearts of teenage admirers around the world. Cut to reality, JohnMichael Yeo is the boy-next-door type, the flight attendant turnedcommercial pilot in training who flies and explores the continents inhis own terms with the levity, curiosity and spontaneity of his youth.

Seemingly inspired by St. Augustine who stated thatthe world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page,e wo d s boo , d ose w o do o ve e d o y p ge,when John was growing up, he had already set his eyes on taking avoyage on distant shores. Being a precocious child, John borrowed theglobe given as a gift to his brother and went on for days and months tolocate every country and memorize its capital on it. In high school, hewas an active boy scout and joined the jamboree in Virginia USA andAukland, New Zealand. The experience gave John a taste ofindependence and the joy of venturing to new places and engaging indiverse cultures.

Determined to achieve his goals, John eventuallytook on the role of a flight attendant on board Air Philippines to go toone prime tourist spot in the Philippines to the other. He transferred toQatar Airways to discover Southeast Asia, Europe and the Middle Eastfor 3 years. Throughout his international flight experience, he countsLondon, France and HongKong as his top three destinations.

“Contrary to general perception, working as a CabinCrew requires a lot of patience and customer focus. Together with thecabin team, we endure long flights and extreme weathers. It is not allglamour. Inside that metal tube, 30,000 feet above the ground, thecrew does everything for the passengers’ well-being,” noted John.

On the adventurous side, John recalls anunforgettable trip to Kathmandu, Nepal. “My crew went rafting in themountains. It was an exhilarating feeling but nothing beats theexperience on the way back to the Hotel Since we forgot to bookexperience on the way back to the Hotel. Since we forgot to booktransportation services, we had to take the bus used by the locals. Thebus was packed to the brim and we ended up nestled on top of it withother passengers and to add to the once in a lifetime experience, itrained on our 4-hour bus ride!”

John can’t seem to get enough of the dreams offlying and the expeditions to far-flung places, he specialized inmanaging the production and marketing of wooden model aircraft forH ii Ai li Th i Ai A fl t KLM Q t AiHawaiian Airlines, Thai Airways, Aeroflot, KLM, Qatar Airways,Southwest Airlines and Philippine Airlines.

Recently he has trained as a commercial pilot forPhilippine Airlines, all set and geared up to become an airline captainpilot to take the world by the storm, up in the air.

She doesn’t shunher age, instead she effusively shares that her secret fountainof youth is no secret at all, naming her positive outlook in life, healthy lifestyle, love and happiness with her family andfriends as the key ingredients to living and looking youthful.

She divulged that although her contemporarieshave gone under the knife with cosmetic surgery for tummytucks and liposuction or out-patient treatment for botox andthreading, she is thankful that she’s not tempted with the nipand tuck addiction and attributes her young-looking aura to90% gym workouts and 10% non-invasive enhancements suchas diamond peel every two months to minimize her frecklesand radio frequency for firming her waist area together with aand radio frequency for firming her waist area together with anew line called calvitation courtesy of Dr. Melvin Cavalries.
