Welcome December 2012

Imagine Issue 3 03

Welcome to our final edition of Imagine in 2012. At this time of year we sit back and reflect on all we have achieved as a Trust over the past 12 months. February was a particularly special month as we joined forces with mental health and learning disability services in York and North Yorkshire, making us a much bigger

organisation with new services, skills and expertise. In addition, we started our What’s your Goal? Campaign, which will run until the end of December. We hope you have joined us on this journey by setting yourself a goal and worked towards achieving it. We hope to reach our goal of breaking the world record for the longest line of bunting on Saturday 15 December. Find

out why that day is in important on page 14.

Just a couple of months ago, we held our Annual Members’ Day and were pleased to have Frank Bruno, boxing legend, to come and speak to us about his past experience. Read about what happened on page four.

Enjoy the festive period! Communications & Engagement Team

At Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, our purpose is to improve the health and lives of the 2000 people who use our services every day.

Our Sharing Stories campaign for 2013 is all about making connections, creating shared experiences, decreasing stigma around mental health and learning disabilities and as well as tapping in to our imaginative side.

Over the next year look out for ways to share your story, hear other people’s experience, get involved in raising awareness and attend some exciting and engaging events.

Just a few of the interesting things taking place next year include:

Readathon In March, we’ll be hosting a fundraising readathon to mark World Book Day and we want as many people as possible to get involved in the challenge.

Love Arts festival Back for a third year, the 2013 festival will focus on storytelling with lots of exhibitions, performances and events for you to participate in.

Book of the Month We’ll be promoting a book each month that focuses on wellbeing in partnership with Leeds Waterstones, Leeds City College and Leeds Libraries. We are currently exploring partnerships in York.

Funds raised through the campaign will be donated to the Trust’s charitable funds, which will then be used to provide experiences to people using our services that go beyond what the NHS can offer.

On Tuesday 25 September we held our Annual Members’ Day and the 2012 Annual General Meeting, our first as the new Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

To get things started, up to 200 members plus our directors, non-executive directors and governors got involved in a ‘getting to know you exercise’ before the formal Annual General Meeting took place. During this our chief executive, Chris Butler (pictured above) delivered the Annual Report for 2011/2012 before a question and answer session followed, where attendees could put forward questions to the board. One theme at the Q&A session was the extra stress that people with mental health problems and learning disabilities are feeling due to the new arrangements for accessing benefits. At the end of the AGM, attendees got the chance to watch the film

which accompanies the campaign ‘Get me?’ The campaign, which launched in September, focuses on changing perceptions of people with learning difficulties.

Throughout the day delegates could visit our interactive stalls to find out about the partner organisations we work with such as Time to Change Leeds, Tenfold and Arts & Minds. Delegates also had the opportunity to do a self-portrait and soundbite about how they were feeling on the day, which were compiled to make a short animation.

Our special guest for the day was Time to Change supporter and boxing legend, Frank Bruno, (pictured right with Chris Butler and Frank Griffiths) who spoke openly about his experience of bipolar and the discrimination he has faced since being diagnosed almost 10 years ago. Interviewed by Tanya Arnold of BBC Look North, Frank spoke about how keeping fit and healthy helped him on his recovery journey. Talking about the Time to Change campaign he is involved in, he said: “I hope the campaign goes on forever to stop people taking the mickey”.

The day’s events were rounded off by an introduction to next year’s campaign, Sharing Stories. Delegates were treated to a bus tour around the grounds of Harewood

House whilst being told stories by Andrew Howorth, head of engagement and Tom Bailey, Arts & Minds development worker. Those who preferred to stay indoors had the chance to develop their own stories and share them with other guests.

Overall the day was a huge success and we thank all those that attended and were involved, we hope you will join us again next year to celebrate our Trust’s achievements.

Christmas can be a wonderful time for some, but others can feel stressed and under pressure.

It’s important that you take care of your mental health and wellbeing so we’ve put together some tips that may help you:

Keep busy This could include going for a walk, taking a trip to the cinema or reading a book.

VolunteerThere are plenty of other people around you that also need support at this time of year so why not volunteer at one of the local charities or organisations? Having some human contact will not only benefit you over the Christmas period but can continue into the new year.

ExerciseKeeping fit is always a good way of keeping your mind and body active, reducing stress by balancing your mood levels.

Healthy eating It’s very tempting to indulge in all the goodies that are on offer but make sure you include a fair amount of fruit and vegetables.

Keep in touch A simple phone call or visit to your friend or family members can perk up your mood no end.

On the following dates the Trust will be at various locations helping people with their Christmas shopping by wrapping gifts. This is in aid of raising money for the Trust’s charitable funds.

Wednesday 19 Dec – 11am-3pm, St John’s Centre, Leeds

Wednesday 19 Dec – 11am – 1pm, Christmas party at Bootham Park Hospital, York

Thursday 20 Dec – 11am-7pm, St John’s Centre, Leeds

Friday 21 Dec - 11am-3pm, St John’s Centre, Leeds

Saturday 22nd Dec – 11am-5pm, St John’s Centre, Leeds

Our Christmas campaign this year aims to raise awareness around mental health and wellbeing during the festivities and also to raise money for people using services at Christmas. This year we will be raising money for our Forensic, Learning Disability and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.

In the UK, one in ten children and young people are diagnosed with a mental health problem.

850,000 children and young people in the UK had a mental health problem last year.

Time to Change in Leeds, alongside the city council, NHS Leeds, Bradford and Airedale and Space 2, are working together to raise awareness of mental health difficulties amongst young people. People with mental ill-health continue to be discriminated against. This discrimination comes from a lack of knowledge, so the current project seeks to challenge existing behaviours, improve awareness and break through the discrimination.

Through the campaign, the partnership aims to:

• Improve the knowledge, attitudes & behaviour of young people and families around mental health

• Reduce the number of young people with mental health problems who experience the negative impact of stigma and discrimination

• Improve the confidence and ability of young people and families to speak openly about their mental health problems.

Recently the partnership launched www.listenupleeds.org.uk, a website aimed at children and young people to help them develop positive attitudes towards people experiencing mental ill-health, rather than discriminate. Films available on the website show a range of people’s stories, from talking about experiencing bipolar to dealing with anxiety each day. You can also put forward your thoughts on how the website should be developed to become more attractive to a younger audience.

If you would like to become more involved in challenging stigma and discrimination you can join the national Time to Change campaign http://www.time-to-change.org.uk or locally by contacting Tricia Thorpe, Time to Change Leeds project worker on [email protected] or call 0113 30 56612.

The second Love Arts festival ran throughout October with a variety of artists displaying their work, from circus performances to literary readings, all in the name of raising awareness of mental health and combating stigma.

The festival makes a great difference to people using our services as well as the wider community and we seek to make it bigger and better each year. Any funds that are raised through the festival events go to the Trust’s charitable funds, which services can then apply to use to set up art activities for services users to get involved in.

Here’s some highlights from the festival:

‘Highlights’, a dazzling annual showcase of artwork by Arts and Minds members who include people who use mental health services, carers, mental health workers and artists with an interest in mental health and wellbeing. The exhibition took place at The Light, Leeds.

1940s Vintage Tea Party, the ultimate vintage crafting event of the year featured our Guinness World Record attempt for the longest line of bunting, with over 60 pieces being made for us at this event. Attendees took part in various craft activities, enjoyed tea and cake whilst listening to Healing Voices choir, or took part in a swing dance lesson by Swing Dance Leeds.

Ewen Spencer ‘Teenagers’ exhibition

Since the inception of ‘Teenagers’ and the emergence of youth culture in Britain we have been becoming older sooner and staying younger longer. This part of life is one of personal discovery but also great vulnerability at a point which mental health problems often develop. White Cloth

10 Imagine Issue 3

Gallery very kindly organised a private viewing of the exhibition, which was a fundraising night for our festival and over £400 was raised.

Here’s just a couple of things people have said about the festival:

“The Love Arts festival has a subtle identity and doesn’t force mental health issues in to the main stream but gently allows them to float in to a public consciousness, keep up the good work”

“I like the inclusion part of the festival the most. Anybody is encouraged to take part and show their work, participate in events, meeting new people, making friends, promoting wellbeing, opening up conversations, trying something new and doing activities I wouldn’t normally take part in, like theatre performance and singing in choirs.”

“The festival is a fun and positive way to get the entire community interacting with each other.”

We are now working with Converge, a unique partnership developed by York St John University with our York services, to expand the festival in to York and North Yorkshire. Converge brings together high quality art educational opportunities for people using mental health services and work experience for university students. More information about Converge can be

found on at www.convergeyork.co.uk

Love Arts AwardsFor the first time this year the Love Arts Awards were held to highlight the people, groups and organizations across the region that have used the arts to make a significant difference to people with mental ill health. What happened in September, October and November…

SeptemberHealth Service Journal Efficiency Award win

The Love Arts festival team were delighted to win the ‘communicating efficiency’ award for the 2011 festival and picked up their award during a ceremony in London on Tuesday 25 September. The judge’s described the festival as ‘a breathtaking, imaginative and game changing approach to delivering credible and energising messages which resonated with all sections of the community.’

Award nomination for involvement workers

John Burley and Dean Milner-Bell were shortlisted in the ‘Partner of the year category’ for the Leeds City Council Awards for Excellence for their work in the Involvement Team, in particularly for involving people with learning disabilities to take control of their lives and ensure information is accessible to people with a wide range of needs. The pair were nominated by Andy Rawnsley, head of service at Adult Social Care, who said: “The

quality of their input is always excellent and I would particularly like to note their contribution to Learning Disability Week and the Safe Places scheme.”

October NHS Leadership Recognition Award nomination Lyndsey Jayne Charles, allied health professional for the Learning Disability Service in Leeds, has been shortlisted for a NHS Leadership Recognition Award in the Quality Champion of the Year award for her involvement implementing a tool to assess the needs and abilities of people using our Learning Disability Service in Leeds.

National apprenticeship nomination Lisa Pettinger, medicines management technician from the Trust’s Pharmacy Department, has won the Regional Apprenticeship Champion of the Year award. She was also nominated as one of three finalists for the National Apprenticeship Champion of the Year.

November Changes to the Board of DirectorsAs 2012 comes to a close, there have been some changes to the Trust’s Board of Directors. Michele Moran, deputy chief executive, chief operating officer and chief nurse departed from the Trust to take up the role of chief executive of Manchester Mental Health and Social Care NHS Trust. We wish her well in her appointment. Jill Copeland, previously director of strategy and partnerships, will become chief operating officer once a new chief nurse/director of quality assurance is appointed following external recruitment.

The year-long campaign is almost at an end and we’re over the moon about how well it has been received by people using our services, staff, our members and the public.

Throughout the past 12 months we have visited a variety of organisations, schools, colleges and public events to spread the word about our campaign and encourage people to set themselves a goal to improve their health and wellbeing.

There has been a wide range of goals set, from running a marathon to improving work/life balance; all of which have been individually represented on a piece of bunting. All the bunting pieces are currently being joined together and on Saturday 15 December the official judging will take place at Leeds United Football Ground to see whether we have broken the record. The bunting will be proudly displayed at many different locations in Leeds and York for everyone to see and spot their piece.

Without our supporters and sponsors the campaign would not have been as successful as it has been. We would like to say a huge thanks to Community Ventures, Sainsbury’s,

Hobbycraft, Cath Kidson, Discount Fabrics Lincs, My Fabric House, , Leeds City Council, City of York Council, Fabric Galleries & Interiors, Shafson Fabric Store, Whaleys Bradford Ltd, Union Industries, The Learning Grove, Leeds United FC, York Marriot, York City Knights, Eden Springs, Arts & Minds Network, and Leeds Let’s Change.

The campaign has received a great deal of support from our campaign ambassadors who have helped to inspire people with their goal setting.

David Stone MBE, Beijing Paralympic double gold medalist and London 2012 Paralympic bronze and gold medalist, said: “While having a clear goal of what I want to achieve, I try to focus on the process rather than the end result. I have learnt that if I give my all to the process, the fruits of my work usually follow. To know how hard I’ve worked to achieve the goal, gives the greatest feeling of satisfaction.”

Simon Buckden, another of our inspirational campaign ambassadors, is on a continuous journey to reach his goal to complete 100 marathons in 100 weeks whilst striving to raise awareness of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Simon’s tips for reaching your goal include: Keep focused & positive, if you go off track let it go & get back to it! Break the big goals down to smaller achievable steps, make them fun and objective too!

The campaign has made a significant impact throughout the year and without doubt raised people’s awareness of mental health. It has helped people to address their aspirations and aim to reach their goals in the future. Funds raised through the campaign are currently being put to good use as services are applying for funding to set up activities that will benefit the people using our services. These extra activities go beyond that which the NHS can usually offer.

Music for health Over the course of 11 weeks, people on Ward 3 and 4 at The Mount have been taking part in ‘music for health’, a great way for people to relax and reminisce. Led by facilitator, Sue Stainthorpe, the group attendees get the chance to sing along to some old classics or get involved with playing percussion instruments.

Get me?Since launching at The Royal Armouries on Wednesday 12 September, ‘Get me?’ campaign has received a fantastic response, with people pledging to spread the message far and wide. Essentially the campaign aims to get people to look beyond a disability and see all the great things a person can achieve regardless. Next time you’re at the cinema look out for it as it will be hitting the big screens at both Vue Cinemas in Leeds and the Hyde Park Picture House.

Sensory gardens thriveThe final two newly developed gardens at The Mount were officially opened in September by Michele Moran, chief

operating officer, chief nurse and deputy chief executive, to be enjoyed by all the people that use the service. Despite the rain, the team officially opened ‘Tranquillity’ and ‘Potters Corner’ by planting a rose.

Bike restoration projectWith the help of funding from the What’s your Goal? campaign, Pete Martin, of Ward 2, Bootham Park Hospital, is in the process of setting up a bike restoration project. Following training by the Bike Rescue Charity in York in November, Pete will now use what he has learnt to help people on Ward 2 restore bikes as a therapeutic activity. They will work together to restore bikes to their former glory, which they can hopefully sell as well as using them for bike rides around the grounds of the hospital and further afield.

September STARsIn September, two members of staff received a STAR award for their contribution to the Trust. After Debbie Thrush, cognitive behaviour therapist,

16 Imagine Issue 3

recovered from the shock of receiving the award from Susan Tyler, director of workforce development, she said: “I am so very touched that my colleagues were so keen to nominate me for a STAR award.”

The second winner was Pete Martin, health care assistant on Ward 2 at Bootham Park Hospital. Pete, who was clearly touched after being presented with his award, said: “I would like to say that I am one part of a great team on Ward 2 and it’s a pleasure working with fantastic colleagues who have been very supportive during my first few

months on the ward. I would like to think the award is recognition for all our hard work.” Well done to both Debbie and Pete! ‘Insight out of mind’ - an art exhibition on the theme of mental healthCommunity members from St Andrews Intensive Group Therapy Programme held ‘Insight out of mind’ an art exhibition at City Screen in York during October. The opening event on October 16 was attended by current and past group members as well as Trust staff, and was a celebration of the positive changes made by many group members.

The art work was accompanied by reflective writing describing the stigma attached to mental health problems and the process of recovery. Art therapy is an important part of the group programme, both in facilitating the exploration of present and past relationship difficulties and in helping individuals to develop a stronger sense of self.

Planning and carrying out this project has been part of the therapeutic community focus that builds on group members’ competencies, addresses inter-personal difficulties and whose task is to facilitate the development of relationships outside, as well as within the community. For more information about this work contact Ruth Merriman, art therapist at St Andrews - [email protected]

During October we hosted three knowledge cafes at Community House in Selby, the Galtres Centre in Easingwold, and the Friends Meeting House on Coppergate in York.

We invited people to come together

and have conversations with each other about what makes

a difference to people’s

mental health and wellbeing. We were very

keen to hear what difference we can make and what messages about people’s priorities we can pass on to the commissioners of our services.

Through informal conversations participants told us they found it very easy to chat about the things that make a difference to them, things that they count as being invaluable in keeping them well, and things that they would like to see developed or introduced. Whilst each café had its own geographical differences, there were a number of significant overlaps that we are taking into account and which we will be passing onto the commissioners.

Comments made after the sessions included: ‘Lots of information from participants, great networking!’

‘Great people, uplifting, relaxed environment, thank you for the food, the exchange of views was simply marvellous!’

‘Meeting lots of new faces was brill!’

‘Openness and ability to chat without fear. Fabulous session thank you!’

‘Relaxed and participative, meaningful and very useful! Thank you.’

Thank you to everyone who came along, and if you missed out, don’t worry there will be more, so next year watch out for the advertisements. The next event will be ‘Building Your Trust at the Knowledge Café’, see our events page.

Since opening in 2009, the Umbrella Café has been doing a great job in providing tasty food for the people working and visiting Bootham Park Hospital, not to mention how it has helped so many people on their journey to recovery.

In partnership with York City Council, the Recovery Team in York run the café along with its sister venture, the Parasol café, as a way of helping people who have used the Trust’s services in York to gain skills through on the job training and develop personal skills. With the end goal of getting people back into employment, the team guide the trainees, helping them gain practical experience such as serving customers, preparing food, handling money as well as supporting them through adult education courses.

Since it first started, the team has seen many trainees join and go on to do great things. Kirsty, recovery team worker, said: “At the moment we have 20 trainees working between the two cafés and we’re fortunate to have the backing of external companies, who have welcomed trainees into their businesses once they are ready to move on from the Umbrella Café. So far we’ve had people stay with us for six months

up to three years, it all depends on the person. Our aim is to get people back into the community, either in paid work or as a volunteer and so far we’ve had many success stories.”

Gemma, one of the trainees, has been at the café since the start and now is a lead trainee, supporting the newer members of the team. Speaking about her placement, Gemma said: “Joining the team has been great and definitely helped me in my recovery. I’ve learnt plenty of skills that I’ll be able to use in future, plus I’ve developed a confidence I didn’t have when I first started.”

In September the Umbrella Café team won the Positive Experience Award at the Trust Awards. Congratulations to them for all their hard work!
