Bouncingvertical motion and "walking" horizontal motion of the droplet can beachievedwith careful control over the frequency and amplitude of the oilbathoscillation.Theobserved“walking”motionisduetotheinteractionofthedropletwiththewavesthatitgeneratesasitbouncesoffofthevibratingliquidsurface.ThissystemprovidesacompellingmacroscopicanalogtotheBohmian pilot-wave interpretation of quantum mechanics. QuantumCorralAn oil bath was custom machined out of solidaluminum and mounted to a frequency- andamplitude-controlledspeaker.Itwaspaintedmatteblacktolimitreflectionsthatwouldinterferewiththedroplet tracking software.Thebathwas filledwithsiliconeoiltoaleveljustabovetheouterflatregion, enabling the bouncing droplet to becontained in the inner region. This one-inchdiameter region readily supports standing wavesatafewdiscretefrequencies.
Athighoscillationamplitudes,thesurfaceoftheoilexhibitssignificantmodulation.Bytuningthedrivingfrequency,stablespatialmodescanbeobservedasstandingwaves. A bouncing droplet in this regime will remain confined within a circularnode.Themotionispredictableandthepatterngeneratedisthesameforall timescales.Framescaptured froma side-viewvideo (above) show thecirculardropletmotion.Thetop-viewdroplettrackingsystemgenerates“heatmaps”ofthedropletposition for different time scales (below). Bright colors indicate higher droplet“probability density” (due to slower motion or repeated occurrence at a givenlocation).
Astheoscillationamplitudeisreduced, theheightofthesurfacewavesinsidetheoilbath will decrease until they are barely visible (above). As a result, the wavesgeneratedbythedropletbouncingontheoilsurfacewillhaveagreaterimpactonitssubsequentmotion.Thepatternsgeneratedbythemotionofthedroplet(below)evolve significantly over time, showing evidence of the self-propelled (seeminglyrandom)dropletmotionaswellastheinfluenceofthe(highlystructured)standingwaves.
Within a narrow range of amplitudes for a given frequency, the self-propelleddroplets (“walkers”) wander across a completely flat oil surface (above). Thedropletmotionisgovernedentirelybythewavesthatthedropletitselfcreates.Forshorttimescales, thismotionexhibitsapparentlyrandombehavior(below),butforlonger times, interference patterns emerge that are completely different from thestandingwavepatternsgeneratedathigheroscillationamplitudes.Thesepatternsareduetotheinterferenceofthedropletwithitself!Thisbehaviorisanalogoustoasingle electron trapped in a “quantum corral.” The beginnings of a central peaksurround by a circular fringe are observed below (denoted by the dashed lines).Ongoingimprovementstoourspeakerandshakersystemswillimprovethequalityoftheobservedinterferencepatterns.
