    The moment of Truth

    Dear Readers,

When I joined Apples Toastmasters club exactly one year agolittle did I know that my life was about to change. The toastmas-ters experience has not only given me a much needed boostin life, but has also given me friends, mentors and a communitywhich believes that we can achieve wonders if we work together

It gives me great pleasure to finally present the first Edition of theApples Newsletter iMag .

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members fortheir support and for also helping me discover talents that werelying dormant in me for all these years.

This challenge has helped me push my self further to excel.

I believe the same rule applies to almost all areas of our life &work. When Life gives us a task, or things are not going the waywe planned, there are two ways to progress. One is to wait till amiracle arrives at your door step, which rarely ever happens and theother is to get up, dust yourself, rollyour sleeves and get to workObstacles will soon disappear and the goal which till then was notvisible will begin to appear. For me seeing you read this magazine

is the achievement of that goal. So please enjoy it, give us youfeedback and help us grow.

We sincerely hope that you will encourage our efforts, provide usyour valuable feedback and contribute to the constant improve-ment of this humble effort.

This is just the beginning, our best is yet to come.. Happy reading!!

sent our club in DTAC.We are also at the verge ofproducing the first ever DTM from Apples.I shall surely share the great news once we getto that stage. We as a club could constantly addnew members & mentor our existing members toachieve their personal goals in life. This would nothave happened without the great support fromour Founders and Sr. Toastmasters in the club. Iwould like to thank them all on behalf of the club.Friends, I am sure that you would be equally hap-py and proud to be part of this association. Weshould aim to achieve our goals and clubs goalsto be number one at all the times.

    What is a mentor?

A mentor takes a personal interest

in and helps an inexperienced per-

    son, offering knowledge, insight,

    perspective or wisdom.

Get a MentorGet AheadThe importance of Mentors in Toastmasters

    The Toastmaster journey is seldom

    complete without the presence and

influence of a Mentor. As Toastmas-

ters international celebrates Men-tors day on October 22nd the birth-

day of TMI President Ralph Smedley,

We revisit the importance of men-

toring and the impact it can have

    on a member.

A new member joins the club. Most

of them are not familiar with theclub policies or meeting formats.

They dont know what a timer is

or what an Ah-Counter does. Yet

    new members are expected to

    participate and give speeches

something many are terrified to do.

Many clubs expect them to do all of

this with a minimum of instruction

    and guidance.

However all new members needsomeone to explain the program

to them and show them how to

    prepare for various meeting roles.

They also need help preparing and

    rehearsing their first few speeches.

    Mentors can supply the valuable

    personal attention and ongoing

    support new members need.

Having a Mentor helps you to prog-

ress effectively as a Toastmaster. Heis like your personal trainer, who

keeps getting you back on your

feet when you get knocked down .

They help the members to learn the

program and club customs (CC and

    CL manuals, club meeting roles,

    membership opportunities)

    Having a mentors develops confi-

dence in the members and help-

sthem to improve participation inclub activities

When you have a helping hand

    from someone who has taken

the tough route as a member you

    quickly learn speaking skills to

    advance faster.

The Mentor also benefits from this

relation as they are able to

    refine and revitalize existing skills

    and learn new skills .

For the club it is essential to have amentor-mentee system in place as

    it Improves member retention

    The success of Apples Toastmasters

as one of the best Clubs in Area 40

is mainly due to the focus the club

    gives for mentoring inexperienced

    speakers. Satisfying the expecta-

tions of new members is tough

    especially when you have speakers

of different ability levels. One of the recent examples is TM

Tharun who with the help of valu-

    able mentoring from experienced

Toastmasters like TM Raj ,TM Shashi,

MTM Priya and MTM Nandita was

able to compete at DTAC 2014

    representing Division B in Table

Topics. All this was done within six

months from the day he joined the

    Apples Toastmasters Club.

    These dedicated Mentors are avail-

able at any time to help, guidance

and build confidence. The club hasa policy where every new member

has to get his project 1 to Project 3

    mentored by MTM Priya Ramach-

andran, who has been a champion

    Public Speaker and active Toast-

master for more than seven years.

The Apples Gavels club is managed

    by these experienced toastmasters

and this allows the young Toast-

masters to gain benefit from an

    very early stage.

    The Club Mentor Program assigns

all new members to a Mentor who

will guide and ensure the members

    steady progress. The newly elected

Ex-Com has also Included a men-

tor who will guide them through

    tough decisions and provide valu-

able and timely inputs. The Club

Mentor for this year is TM David

Augustine a seasoned toastmasterwith many years of valuable experi-

    ence.

So act now, get in touch with your

    mentor and stay ahead.

    The positive effects

of Mentors in ourlifesMentors influence our life in many ways. its like havingyour oersonal trainer who lifts you up each time you areknocked down.

Everything diminishes with its us-age. Languages do not come easy

    to me.

Does that mean that my left-side

brain does not function well? Yes,its a very horrifying thought. So

when I cannot analyze the speech-

es at our club meetings, it is just

    proved that I am not a left-brained

    personality. Logic is my strength.

    Or is it?

    Looking at my left-brain weakness!

Then, it must be that at least my

right-side brain has to be function-

ing well. After all, whats life with-

    out thinking or being instinctive?

But to think of it, modulating myspeech-tones too is not one of my

    virtues. There it goes....my right-

    side brain seems dysfunctional as

well. This could easily be deduced

as a permanent brain disability. It is

awful to know that theres no nor-

    mal brain functioning in me!

Recently, I was reading an ar-

ticle which stressed that the left

& right side brain function to-

    gether. It rubbished the theories

of left & right-brained people. Itsays that both sides of our brain

    work in sync.

    If there is disconnect between

the two sides of ones brain, such

    people could not recognize &

    name objects controlled by

left-side of our brain. At least,

this assures me that my brains

on both sides are connected for

I can very well verify good from

bad, white from black and scorn

from pat. I can also draw neatly

if one ignores messing it whilepainting later on.

Research has shown that the brain is

not nearly as independent as once

    thought. For example, neurosci-

entists know that the two sides of

the brain work together to perform

a wide variety of tasks. Abilities in

in subjects such as math are

    actually strongest when both

halves of the brain work togeth-

er. It is right that one side of our

brain is better at doing certainthings better but we do not

have only one-side of our brain

    as major functional organ. Both

are essential in our activities ev-

ery day. After all, each almond

    we consume hits

both sides of our brains equally.

This means that we can take up

any type of learning at any age

    - be it knowing a new language,

    evaluation of speeches, taking

    dancing lessons or training to

be a marathon runner. We mightface hardships in each one but

it is not impossible. Especially as

our brain, in its completeness, is

right with us till our new activ-

ity lasts and even beyond. The

    only thing that increases with

    usage is human brain.

pleasant and enjoyable toexperience... In prosperity, when everything is rightfor us,we reach the pin-nacle of self confidence, self esteem and personalmotivation... we considerourselves heroes and tellthe world nothing is im-possible...

But when things turn up-side down...when our longcherished dreams do notmaterialize... when we get

    fired from our jobs ...when

our business fails and webecome bankrupt... we cryout loudly oh god! Why

are you so cruel to me?Why did you do this tome...? We keep crying andlamenting... and from thepinnacle of confidence wefall into the precipice ofhopelessness...

    We feel demoralized, de-

feated and trapped. In-stead of fighting back, wetend to give up and endup being losers...

We are all scared of dif-ficult situations. But... Arebad times really bad....?

THEY ARE NOT ...Thatswhat Dave Stevens lifeteaches us...

Dave Stevens was bornwithout legs. His youngmother abandoned himafter birth...he was thenraised by a family in Ari-zona.

Dave grew up as a hap-py kid, and never feltashamed of being an am-putee... his dream was tobecome a professionalathlete, so each time he

got an opportunity, hecrawled out of his homeand engaged in all kindsof sporting activities withhis friends in the neigh-borhood.

In high school he playedbaseball and Americanfootball. He was a wrestlertoo ..... As a high schooler,he set three state recordsin wrestling and baseball.

In 1996, he was able toplay minor league base-ball in the US. He is theonly athlete ever to playcollege football or minorleague baseball withoutlegs.

Dave Stevens works forESPN... He has coveredvarious historic sportsEvents and won theEmmy award for thebest sports broadcasterseven times.

Stevens believes he haslived a blessed life...healways finds his abilitiesrather than disabilitiesand he feels that he is acomplete human being.

The virtue of adversityis fortitude which sim-

ply means courage. Itis the most heroic of allvirtues....

When hardship strikes, you may fall into a pitof loneliness....our be-loved ones who alwayscared for us might turntheir backs on us. Ourfriends who pledgedtheir commitments andloyalty to our friendship

would probably disap-pear from our circles...But remember... for us,its a golden opportunityto prove our metal ....itsour time to take the bullby the horns and bringout the heroes hiddenwithin all of us...
