Messages from the Managing Director of the IMBA

The 21st Century belongs to Asia and Taiwan is the ideal location to take advantage of this. Being part of dynamic Greater China

as well as a gateway to the rest of Asia, Taiwan is the perfect place to seize boundless opportunities. However, to have the

knowledge, skills, and connections that are necessary to achieve these dreams takes hard work. The International MBA (IMBA)

program of NCCU is the way to get you there.

The College of Commerce at NCCU is a leading business school in Asia, ranked amongst the top 50 Masters in Management

Programs in the world by the Financial Times in 2008, 2009 and 2010. The International Master of Business Administration

(IMBA) is a premier business program and is one of the top eighteen business schools in Asia enjoying dual accreditation by the

Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS).

Our vision is to educate and nurture the best leaders in the world of business. Our curriculum has been carefully structured

and designed to integrate business domain knowledge, core competencies, and leadership skills essential for our graduates

to excel. We focus on leadership with high ethical and moral values. Meanwhile, communication skills and cultural sensitivity

are enhanced while students work in teams with other classmates of diverse cultural and professional backgrounds. Our

IMBA creates an environment for students to interact with renowned faculty and industry experts from all over the world in a

collaborative way on practical business projects and rigorous competitions.

What makes the IMBA truly unique is its distinctive access to the Asian economy. As we know, the Greater China market has been

growing at a remarkable pace. Taiwan is now one of China's top three major sources of investment, playing a pivotal role in its

growing economy. Taiwan really is the gateway to China--a bridging role for the West-because of the common culture, language,

and geographical proximities. This makes our program the ideal choice for professionals interested in the Asian market. In

addition, our talented faculty members have provided extensive consultation and collaboration with major businesses and the

government. Students benefit immensely from the experience and networking our faculty has established in Asia. The IMBA

offers unique courses on Asian business practices and regional studies, making our program the perfect conduit to learn about

this dynamic region and its emerging markets. We have specially designed courses on key areas including “Doing Business in

Asia” and “Entrepreneurship” to enlighten your learning.

We firmly believe that the IMBA knowledge, combined with work experience from internships, practical business projects and

field studies, will prepare you to be successful leaders with remarkable achievements.

Welcome to the IMBA, the passport to your future – an excellent leader in the world of business.

The IMBA Advantage

The International MBA (IMBA) program offered by National Chengchi University (NCCU) is the premier English-taught MBA program in Taiwan.  The program has dual accreditation by AACSB and EQUIS and emphasizes the cultivation of elite professionals from around the world into future business leaders in an international environment. With the continued growth of Asia’s emerging economies and the expansion of firms on a global scale, the NCCU IMBA offers the perfect venue for international candidates to learn about Asian economies and for Taiwanese candidates to benefit from an international education without traveling abroad

Global View with an Asian PerspectiveThe unique design of the IMBA curriculum aims to equip students with the foundational knowledge of commerce and leverage

on this to provide students with a global view as well as an Asian perspective of the world's latest business trends. Students have

the option of specializing in Doing Business in Asia or Entrepreneurship. While all courses capture an international outlook of

business and how it applies in the Asian context, certain courses concentrate mainly on practices within Asia.

Diverse Student Body and World Class Faculty The IMBA program provides an optimal international and multicultural learning environment by maintaining balance in the

number of Taiwanese citizens and international students are admitted to the program. The international students represent a

diverse mix of professionals from more than 30 countries on 5 continents. This is complemented by the guidance they receive

from a faculty base comprised of academics and industry experts in Taiwan and from around the world.

Theory and Practice The program is designed to provide a meaningful balance between theoretical and practical learning. A majority of courses apply

the case study method, which enables participants to learn by doing and teaching others. Specially designed classes also provide

students with the opportunity to get involved with real world business problem decision-making as well as business cases.

Strong Links with the Business Community CNCCU has strong ties with industry and the government of Taiwan, and has various collaborative researches across a wide

array of initiatives. Students are given ample opportunities to interact with real world business leaders who are invited to teach

Expertise and Focus on Asia

The international aspect of each and every area of the IMBA, including the courses, student body, and faculty, make this program truly unique. What further differentiates the IMBA from other MBA programs is the expertise integrated in the special Asian featured courses that we provide under the Doing Business in Asia concentration. Aside from developing a global view in world business trends, it is just as essential to gain an Asian perspective of business. Our program is the perfect conduit for learning all about this growing region.

Chinese Business in Global PerspectiveThis is a course on the transformation of Chinese business in the era of globalization. The course is organized around

sixteen seminars, covering structural, urban, and industrial transformation of Chinese business and the Chinese economy.

Confucianism and LeadershipFor more than 2,500 years, Confucianism has had a strong impact on the philosophy, culture, society, economy, and

politics of China as well as Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. Its core values are also deeply rooted in overseas Chinese

communities around the world. With China, and Asia in general, becoming more important and influential in the world,

there is renewed interest in understanding Confucianism and its relevance to economic success. Given the shocking

awakening to the importance of moral and ethical responsibilities of business leaders in the post-Enron era, Confucianism

provides a useful framework to re-examine our understanding of leadership and reflect on our personal leadership

behaviors. The course is designed to help participants understand Confucianism and its relevant concepts and principles

on leadership to draw from such time-tested ancient wisdom and leadership practices fit for multinational organizations

in the 21st century.

Cross Border Strategic AlliancesThe course focuses on collaboration among firms across international borders as a means of creating value and

achieving strategic objectives and is aimed at providing participants with insights into the concept of cross-border

strategic alliances and how to create and manage them. After the course, students are expected to know the important

considerations in pursuing and implementing partnerships, be able to think analytically about alliances and apply such on

case studies as well as real situations through individual class projects.

Emerging Financial MarketsThis course discusses the financial systems applicable in emerging markets. Three main goals are stressed: first,

understanding the development process of financial markets and its impact on emerging economies; second, studying

the third and indirect financing channels in emerging markets; and last, learning about laws, regulations, and corporate

governance in relation to said financial systems. While the course is focused on emerging markets, students will also learn

about the markets of developed countries and a comparative study between the two.

Page 11: IMBA brochure

9International MBA

Small and Medium Size Enterprises This course is designed to allow students to understand the development and growth of the robust SME environment

of Taiwan. After taking this course students should have a middle-to-upper management perspective on the holistic

operations of a small to medium sized business.

Strategic Talent ManagementThis course is designed to explore the key concepts and principles in leadership, organization development and

strategic talent management in the context of building and leading a high performance organization. The focus will be

on managing people as the most important assets, so as to create competitive differentiation for organizations facing

intense competition in the 21st century knowledge-based new economy. Participants will be exposed to different learning

experiences besides class meetings, including action learning through group projects and assignments, reflective learning

through writing individual reflections, interactive experiential learning through management games at study camp, etc.

Participants will learn how self-awareness, self-management, and self-development relate to good leadership.

The ETP curricula at CNCCU are a platform that allows CNCCU students to build and excel in their English language communication skills while focusing on management topics. The platform is a first of its kind in Taiwan and incorporates only the best and brightest CNCCU students to join, akin to an advanced, elite program across all departments within CNCCU. By opening these courses to IMBA candidates, we hope to broaden the dynamism of the student base and further promote a multi-cultural environment within the broad base of all courses at the college.

also available for those who would like to sharpen their skills in listening and speaking or to learn Classical Chinese, Taiwanese,

or Cantonese. IMBA students can choose between intensive courses which take place every weekday for 2 hours at a time or a

less intensive class which meets twice a week.

with local students. Instructors in the program are highly qualified with multiple years of experience in teaching Mandarin

Chinese as a foreign language to individuals with various linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

The IMBA Student Council

The IMBA Student Council is an organization run by current IMBA candidates. It endeavors to serve as a conduit between the

students, administration, alumni, business and local communities as well as other MBA programs in Taiwan and abroad.

Every year, the Council builds on the experiences of the previous student representatives to deliver better services for the student

body, better marketing of the program and stronger links that benefit both the students and the businesses that we work with.

The range of services varies from providing bilingual business cards to promoting social events as well as providing opportunities

to perform community service for those in need in the Taipei area. We also actively promote the IMBA program and IMBA

candidates to the business community. With an annual marketing event, we prepare a Candidate Profile Brochure with

professional pictures and polished resumes. This is followed up by presentations to headhunters, business organizations as well

as the human resource departments of businesses in Taiwan. Additionally, company tours are arranged each semester to further

expose the IMBA program and its candidates to the local business community.

Undoubtedly, the biggest achievement of the Student Council in 2008 was winning the honor to host the 2009 Global Business

Conference at the NCCU campus in Taipei. We were proud to show all of the top business schools from the US, Europe and Asia,

including Harvard, Yale, and CEIBS, the level of business education offered in Taiwan. The great facilities, devoted faculty, as

well as the breadth of diversity and competence of IMBA students all make our school a great place to further your business

education. The Student Council hopes to continue in this tradition by hosting more conferences and reaching out the qualified

applicants about the power and potential of the NCCU IMBA.

Being on International-MBA has been an incredible journey for me, both for my professional and personal growth. The diversified backgrounds of faculty and student body provide a truly global perspective on the dynamic business environment. The knowledge of professors with valuable experience in real world and the flexibility of the courses structure were absolutely amazing. I have been able to build on the skills and combine them with tools I have learned from the program, and apply it to practical working situations. The program far exceeded my expectations.

IMBA is a unique platform to meet people with common ambition and the drive in achieving high standards. It is an amazing environment to meet a large group of highly intelligent professionals from whom I have learned so much. More than being classmates for two years, they are important friends and people network for me in the future. I have the confidence to take on more responsibility and welcome new challenges at work.

IMBA Alumni Association– A Gateway to Excellence

Since its establishment in 2001, the IMBA program has graduated outstanding business professionals from across the globe in many industry sectors.  The IMBA Alumni Association (IMBAA) was established in order to create, develop, and maintain opportunities for alumni through a life-long partnership that is dedicated to business opportunities, professional growth, community enhancement, and mutual support between past, present, and future IMBA students.

The association promotes the educational, professional, social, and economic interests of the IMBA Program and its alumni. We strive to form close bonds among alumni, former students, current students, faculties, staff, and the local community as well as the development of ongoing operations in regional alumni chapters and other alumni groups in an effort to expand the involvement and participation of the extended IMBA family in alumni affairs.

The IMBAA is operated in conjunction with several prominent alumni, the auspices of the Office of International Programs at

CNCCU, and a governance committee comprised of the current IMBA managing director and CNCCU top administrators. Through

the leadership of the governance committee, the IMBAA is governed by three guiding principles, namely:

Team BuildingA platform by which the extended IMBA family is able to gather on a bi-monthly basis for fun, and casual events. We publish a

quarterly newsletter, utilize the IMBAA website and promote a cross section of interactive events for the IMBAA extended family

to enjoy

Business NetworkingThrough the establishment of a directory and various social networking tools, the IMBAA has amassed a database that helps

match business opportunities, jobs, etc. among interested individuals. With the addition of the leaders forum IMBA course,

alumni and students are able to interact freely and effectively to match their needs as they arise.

Strategic AlliancesThrough strong ties with the EMBA program of CNCCU and other English speaking MBA programs in Taiwan and abroad, the

IMBAA ensures that outreach and collaboration are fluid and functional for all IMBAA members around the world, or across town.

These alliances allow IMBAA to participate in joint activities with businesses, groups and organizations that broaden our base of

both business networking and team building to the extended community.

Career Development and Placement Services

IMBA graduates are highly employable and sought after by the local and international business communities. They perform outstandingly in business sectors, the academic realm, and in government offices.

The avenue that allows IMBA graduates to access crucial post academic employment as well as extracurricular guidance is our commitment to career development. IMBA works diligently to prepare students with strategy and techniques to conduct successful job searches and acts as a facilitator in making employment connections through a range of programs and services. The full array of IMBA services is as follows:

Career Development Counseling: IMBA provides services and resources that support students in their candidacy with

graduate programs and employers. This counseling also promotes networking and collaborative thinking to opening job

opportunities to IMBA students.

Industry Academia Collaboration: IMBA seeks internships and project opportunities from enterprises for students to

apply the business concepts and methods learned in a practical way. Currently, the primary source of internships and

projects are the companies in which our alumni and EMBA students work. IMBA is keen on developing relationships

with bona fide employers who provide part-time, summer, temporary, developmental, and professional employment

opportunities to students and graduates.

Alumni Services: IMBA provides professional services to the IMBA’s alumni. IMBA alumni host regular social events, outings

where past and present students may exchange ideas, promote opportunities and collaborate on job placement initiatives.

The alumni offer direct connections to employers and business groups that current students greatly benefit from.

In addition to the IMBA program Career Development and Placement Services, the College of Commerce also offers the Office of

Student Affairs and Alumni Association (OSAAS) as a college wide, unified platform for career development. Formally established

in 2004, OSAAS is charged with combining the alumni service offerings of the collective departmental bodies of CNCCU within

an organized and professional manner to leverage and maximize the career development opportunities and linkages with the

greater alumni body of the college spanning more than 50 years.

At the University level, there is an Office of Student Affairs (OSA) that offers services in broader scope to those of the OSAAS and

IMBA career development. The OSA is offered access to multiple job placement opportunities through on campus job fairs and

specially hosted corporate showcases where top firms from around Taiwan scout for talent among the greater university pool of

students.

Being a part of the IMBA program at NCCU has impacted my life tremendously. The selection of classes exceeded my expectations, and the professors deliver passionate and enthusiastic messages that I will truly use in my future career. The diversity of students in this IMBA program is amazing. There are students from all over the world with different cultural, educational, and career backgrounds. I did not expect to create such a strong bond with those in my class. We are passionate about the program and have a “corporate/IMBA” culture that you can actually feel. This applies to all IMBA students, no matter their personal schedules, we all have opportunities to interact and participate. Everyone works cohesively as a team. This school perpetuates the real life corporate culture found all over the world. These are real life experiences that I will take with me in my future endeavors not only help me grow as a business woman, but as a person. Not to mention, it is a great way to network ourselves for future opportunities.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

The IMBA program receives generous grants from well-known corporations in Taiwan, many of which subsequently offer scholarships to eligible local and international applicants through the IMBA scholarship. These are merit-based scholarships that offer a tuition waiver of up to NT$200,000 a year. Applicants must complete and submit scholarship applications along with an admissions application form to be considered for an IMBA scholarship. Please be advised that IMBA scholarship opportunities are subject to change as the stipulations and benefits of each scholarship may be altered by our program sponsors.

Other scholarships for international applicants are also available and a high percentage of our international students have

obtained them.

(1) The Taiwan Scholarship - provided by Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Education, which grants students NT$30,000 (approx.

US$850) per month.

(2) ICDF Scholarship - provided by Taiwan's International Cooperation and Development Fund, which grants full scholarships to applicants

strengthening relations between Taiwan and allied, friendly nations.

Studying at NCCU has given me both a broad overview, as well as a more detailed mastery of the specific areas in which I have chosen to concentrate. In working together with my classmates to apply this knowledge in real world simulations, I have gained a clear insight into both Taiwanese and foreign companies. You can read about the different business practices in Asia anywhere, but the NCCU program allowed me to put them in a cultural perspective. I highly recommend the MBA program at Zheng Da to anyone who is serious about doing business in Asia.

Living in Taiwan and attending the IMBA Program at NCCU changed my life.  On the academic side, the knowledge I received from the outstanding faculty has been a determinant factor for my performance as a business person.  With that knowledge and experience, I now have the honor of leading a Latin American company doing multi-million dollar businesses with Asia.  On the human side, every single day I lived in Taiwan felt, every time, like the best day of my life.  In Taiwan, I met the nicest people and built my strongest friendship relationships, which will be unforgettable for me.  I will be eternally thankful with everybody at IMBA for making all this happen.

commands a beautiful view, in a peaceful setting, at the foot of Mt. Zhi-nan and is close to many tourist spots including the Zhi-

nan Temple, the Tea Display Museum, and the Taipei Zoo.

The main campus is approximately 103 hectares, with 80 hectares set aside as lush, green hillside. The Jing-mei and Zhi-nan

Rivers run through the campus forming a beautiful verdant landscape with the surrounding hills and vegetation.

Divided by Zhi-nan River, the campus offers a hill-foot side and the hillside. The hill-foot division is developed along the main axis

of Si-wei Avenue, with most university building complexes concentrated along the north-south passage. These include historical

buildings such as the Zhi-shi Building, Guo-fu Building, and Si-wei Auditorium. There are also new buildings constructed within

the past two decades, including the Chung-cheng Library, the Social Science Information Center, the General Research Building,

the College of Commerce, and the General-Purpose Building. The sixteen-story General-Purpose Building, completed and

opened in 2000, is now the landmark of the campus.

On the hillside are the Communication College Building, the Dao-fan Building, the Century Building, and the Ji-tao Building. All

of these buildings have wonderful views of the beautiful, winding Jing-mei River from the hillside.

At 5 kilometers in length, the tree-lined Beltway running through the hillside serves as the main traffic route for this campus

division. A hiker's path was also built on the hillside campus to provide leisure activities for the faculty, students and residents

from nearby neighborhoods. The vibrant academic scene in the hill-foot division and the beautiful scenery of the hillside division

combined clearly distinguish NCCU apart from other universities in northern Taiwan.

IMBA at NCCU provided a solid ground for both professional learning and networking. I am surrounded by so many young professionals from a wide range of industries. The dynamic student body provided venue for intellectual debates and experience sharing in our courses. Social and community service activities planned by the school and the student council ensure that our class is tightly bond and I can safe to say that my classmates will be my friends for life.

Life in Taiwan

Taiwan's total land area is only about 36,000 square kilometers; it lies off the eastern coast of mainland China -- a solitary island on the western edge of the Pacific Ocean. With Japan and Korea in the north, Philippines in the south, and China in the west, Taiwan's location makes it a perfect spot for further traveling.

The Taiwanese government has established 6 national parks and 12 national scenic areas to preserve Taiwan's best natural

ecological environments and cultural sites: Take in the splendor and sheer heights of the cliffs at Taroko Gorge; take a ride on

the Alishan train--one of only three mountain railways in the world--and experience the breathtaking sunset and sea of clouds;

hike up to the summit of Northeast Asia's highest peak, Jade Mountain. You can also soak up the sun in Kenting, Asia's version

of Hawaii; stand at the edge of Sun Moon Lake; traipse through the East Rift Valley; or visit the offshore islands of Kinmen and

Penghu. It's an awesome journey full of natural discovery!

The cultural aspects of Taiwan should not be missed. The blending of Hakka, Taiwanese, and Mainland Chinese cultures have

produced a rich plethora of cultural and social color. Whether it is religion, architecture, language, living habits, or food, it's one

big exciting melting pot!

The school campus is located right at the edge of Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan. Taipei is a lively and modern city, and is

home to approximately 6 million people. In the city, the food is exotic, the people are friendly, and there are top-notch spots for

sightseeing. Being just minutes away from the heart of Taipei, our campus provides students with the closeness and contact of

city life while maintaining the peaceful and relaxed pace of a suburb!
