Greetings!

We are swiftly approaching the spring season, and it has been wonderful to have some sun and a few days of warmer temperatures. Daylight Savings Time is Sunday, March 8th, and while we lose an hour of sleep that weekend, there’s something awesome about this time of year.

This year Oregon schools are using the new SmarterBalanced assessments instead of the Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (OAKS). Students have one opportunity to take the test each year, and there has been quite a bit of anxiety around the new testing system state-wide. Many people have spoken publicly about the projected performance for Oregon students for this first round of assessments. It seems that the consensus is that Oregon students will show substandard performance

overall in reading, writing and math. However, I believe that the Imbler School District will perform above the state average. If I am wrong, we

will use the data from this first round to strategically plan and adjust to increase student achievement moving forward. This year’s data will serve

as our baseline.

Parents can help our efforts by reinforcing high expectations for students and having discussions at home about work ethic and goals. A consistent

message to never do less than one’s best really does go long way. Getting enough sleep and eating a nutritious breakfast are two other factors in student

performance, as well.

Spring Break begins March 23rd. Classes resume the following Monday, March 30th. No matter what your Spring Break plans, I hope all of our students, staff and their families enjoy a safe, healthy and FUN week off!

CLICK TO ORDER YOUR YEARBOOK NEW OPTIONS! This year we are doing things a little bit different in ordering our yearbooks. First, you must PRE-ORDER your yearbook if you want to make sure that your child will have one to keep forever. Yearbooks are full of MEMORIES, and we try our best to make sure each student is in it at least 3 times! Next, if you order by April 24th you can personalize your child’s yearbook with his or her name and icons to represent their favorite things such as volleyball, football, basketball, music, art and there are lots, lots more to choose from.

ORDERING! You can order a yearbook by filling out the order form in the newsletter or picking one up from the high school office and returning it to the high school office with your payment. Now, you can order ONLINE by going to www.jostensyearbooks. com and selecting Imbler High School. If you have purchased class rings or senior graduation items in the past, then you already have an account with Jostens and you sign in using your login information. If you haven’t, just create an account that you will always use whenever purchasing anything from Jostens. When purchasing online, you will use a credit or debit card for payment to make it easier in purchasing a 2014-15 yearbook.

REPLAYIT! As a yearbook staff, we know that parents, students, staff, friends and family all capture some great photos throughout the school year. Now you can share those pictures with the yearbook staff for possible use by going either going to www.replayit. com, signing in with your Jostens account information and uploading the pictures... or downloading the Jostens

ReplayIt app on your phone, signing in and uploading photos through the app on your phone. How easy is that?

Please call the high school if you have any questions and we want to THANK YOU for all of your support through sponsorships, purchasing the yearbook, donating yearbooks to students who can’t afford one and by sharing your AWESOME photos with us!

Yearbooks will be distributed in the Fall and we are excited about capturing this year’s memories in our

“Empowered” edition of the 2014-15 yearbook!

FFA NEWS By: McKayla Hoskin

What a great month for FFA members! With FFA week and district and sectional competitions, February was definitely a busy month! The first week of February, the Oregon FFA State Officers came and interviewed and heard presentations from Imbler FFA Members who were applying for the 2015 Oregon FFA State Degree. Students had to earn and invest $1,000, work at least 500 hours of agriculture related employment (or 900 total hours if solely a work based project), participate in 30 FFA events or activities (at least 5 above the local level), perform 25 hours of community service, participate in 10 non-FFA events, pass a written test, and submit at least two years of records along with a 15 page application. Imbler FFA is proud to announce that the following eight (8) students are going to receive the 2015 Oregon FFA State Degree in Silverton, Oregon on March 21st:

Tyler Bales Amanda Feik Treynae Shaffer

Calvin Shaffer Whitney Wilber Hailee Patterson

Garret Ryan Rachel Sauer

Also nominated by the Eastern Oregon FFA District (all FFA chapters in Union, Baker, and Wallowa Counties) for the Honorary Oregon FFA State Degree were Bunch Isley Ranch, and Daniel Bolen - Ag Teacher at Elgin HS. Eastern Oregon FFA is very proud of the support it garnishes from the communities in our area and we are proud to nominate supporters for statewide recognition.

On February 11, Imbler FFA hosted and competed in 9 FFA Leadership related Career Development Events (CDE). Over 45 community volunteers gave time to FFA that day by judging speaking events and reading manuscripts. We would like to thank the following people for giving of their time and talents:

Roxanne Graves, Becky McCay, Steven Anthony, Tonya Evans, DuAnn Ammons, Bryson Ricker, Brian Lackey, Melissa Fullerton, Dennie Rankin, Teressa Dewey, Patty Hislop, Angie Lane, Dawn Treat, Kent Coppinger, Wade Bingaman, Kerry Bolen, Mandi Collins, Margarette Craig, Kris Kizer, Doug Hislop, Doneva Bolen, Remington Frazier, Mary West, Josh Burright, Mike Mills, Kymee Braseth, Tommy Ayres, Nick West, Meg Moore, Stacey Merrigan, Patty Bingaman, Sandy McCoy, Robin Mailee, Lisa Eisiminger, Hank Stockhoff, Beth Burton,

businesses who helped provide materials to feed the group. We

are very thankful for the support of Safeway and Pepsi-Cola Bottling of Eastern Oregon in La Grande.

Eleven competitors moved on to sectionals at Eastern Oregon University on February 18th with the hopes of moving further along in the competition. Look for the March update in the next newsletter to see how they placed. Members moving on from sectionals will compete at the state FFA convention on March 19th-23rd. This event is very competitive and only the best speakers and competitors will compete there. It will be great to see Imbler represented at state!

Another event in February was the Eastern Oregon FFA District Convention where officer related applications, proficiency qualifications, cooperative quiz, and district officer elections were held at La Grande High School. Imbler FFA had numerous students qualify for State FFA Convention in March due to the level of participation at district convention.

Along with the competitions, FFA week took place from February 23rd-27th. FFA held their annual petting zoo with a variety of farm animals from local people throughout the valley. Also that week, we held the annual community breakfast. FFA loves to give back to the community and thank them for all that they have done for us. The community breakfast is put on by FFA members and the Friends of Imbler FFA and is entirely free for anyone! We ended the week with a school assembly promoting FFA with various farm related competitions such as toy tractor racing and hay bale toss!
