Young people around the country are speaking out against injustices and more and more signs of illegal acts by police officers are surfacing on the internet.

Some are saying that protests don’t work and others are celebrating the activism displayed.

I tend to choose to stand on what I deem to be the right side of history. There’s nothing like being the people who lack backbones, fortitude or a

level of consciousness to speak out during times of turmoil and urgency; but decades later they want to act as though they were doing the right thing all along.

You know what I’m talking about, like the people who mocked Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. when he was alive but listening to them today, over 50 years later, they were a few rows behind Dr. King as he marched in the streets.

Here we are, in another century, fighting injustices, racism and a number of other isms, only to find that half the battle is fighting those who stand to benefit the most from the valiant efforts of tbe courageous, who more important than finding something to die for; they’ve found something to live for.

How can you blame someone for having the guts, willpower, or sense to do something that you can’t bring yourself to do?

You nay not agree with the tactics, strategies or execution, but you can move out of the way and let those who have a desire do what they feel is necessary; without your griping and moaning.

If you don’t agree, do your own thing. Come up with your own strategy. Or, you can sit home watching your sop operas, reality shows or cartoons--like you don’t have a care in the world.

That is, after all, better than using the media to attack progress.I smile every time I see or hear about someone else doing something to

call attention to the war we are fighting to make this world a better place.Maybe, just maybe if enough people stand up and speak out, we will all be

able to breathe!

P.S. Join me at KwanzaaFest this weekend at Fair Park!

advertisementLife has a way of showing you how bad it can suck sometimes. Coming after two great weeks on the final leg of our Fall Tour I was met with the news that I was no longer on the air in my hometown of Dallas.Every market where the TJMS is aired is important to me for all kinds of reasons—all 100 of them.  But Dallas is the home of Reach Media, the company my partner David Kantor and I formed and the company that my two sons help me run. It’s the company that among other things, syndicates The Tom Joyner Morning Show, The DL Hughley Show and radio shows hosted by Rickey Smiley, Yolanda Adams, Russ Parr and more.

“The cops are awesome,” Barkley told CNN on Tuesday. “They’re the only thing in the ghetto between this place being the wild wild West.” –“Sir” Charles Barkley – Times Magazine

I was waiting for Supreme Court Injustice Clarence Thomas to carry the “White man’s water” in this latest series of miscarried justice, but I guess Charles Barkley had the lowest bid. This over-zealous, semi-literate Negro did what good coloreds are supposed to do…Charles came up with a line almost as asinine as the ones former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been spouting to support the non-indictment of officers who committed murder.

Let me make two strong declarations upfront; 1. Not all cops are bad, but the good ones need to start speaking up quickly. 2. If you think Charles Barkley is a plain spoken, tell-it-like-it-tis Rhodes Scholar, just notice that he never has a script or teleprompter like all of the other sports journalists. He’s a hack!!

You know by now, that it’s a cherished choice of mine to bring you old sayings, colloquialisms, clever quotes and bits of wisdom that survive history. But here is one that I coined myself, tailor-made for Charlie Barkley; "When you engage a worrisome fool you marry your worst fears."  In other words; trying to discern or defend against the mind and mannerisms of an idiot is idiotic.

Chuck Barkley is a millionaire by the virtue of the fact that he is a sold-out Negro, a coonish caricature and a fully-functioning subsidiary of White conservatism and White privilege. Chuck is an embarrassment to the Freedom Fighters and martyrs who served his home state of Alabama and this nation so well. But…Enough of that Negro.

Rather than get engaged to a witless fool I would rather marry the wisdom and bravery of other sports heroes. I will leave Chuck and quiet Negroes like Michael Jordan to their cigars and golf clubs.

Let’s concentrate on Curt Flood whose bravery spawned the notion

and birth of Free Agency that made Charles rich. Or the great and gracious Muhammad Ali who's

fights for freedom and justice compelled this nation and the world to go the extra round for the sake of freedom and dignity.

How about Wilma Rudolph who exchanged her Olympic star status to become an earthly gift to the Civil Rights and Women's Rights movements?  Or maybe Jackie Joyner-Kersee who made the long jump from Gold Medalist to return to help in communities that look like ghettos.

Fast forward to today and there are more than a few athletes paying the freight of freedom.

Protests take a lot of nerve, but to Protest Ferguson Police where they live under the bright glaring lights

of the National Football League require character and strength.

Fox News reported it this way. “Prior to

kickoff of their game against the Oakland Raiders, Rams wide receivers Tavon Austin and Kenny Britt came out together and raised their hands, but the move was obscured by a

smoke machine in the upper reaches of the Edward Jones Dome. Jared Cook, Stedman Bailey and Chris Givens then came out

and stood together with hands raised in the fog.” Take that Uncle Charlie. And by the way they went on to win the game 52 to nuthin’ as we say here in the ghetto!!!LeBron James and so many other NBA players are speaking out vociferously and vehemently. If Charles could read a Muhammad Ali quote, he may understand this movement that is statistically as diverse as any in this nation’s history; “Wars of nations are fought to change maps. But wars of poverty are fought to map change.”This fight is all about the

poverty of injustice that resides in our communities and apparently there’s nothing to fight about in Charlie’s neighborhood.

Uncle Charlie’s Neighborhood!!!

By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

Recently individual members of the Congressional Black Caucus spoke on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives regarding the decision by a grand jury in Ferguson, Missouri not to indict a police officer for the shooting death of Michael Brown, an unarmed African American teenager.

Without exception, members of the Caucus expressed outrage with the decision, and the conduct of the Ferguson County prosecutor, Robert McCullough, whose ability to be fair-minded and non-partisan was challenged by members of Ferguson’s African American community.

McCullough undermined public confidence by taking a highly unusual approach to the grand jury proceedings. Rather than conducting an investigation into the August shooting and then making a recommendation to the grand jury, as most prosecutors do, McCullough left the decision to the 12 men and women who comprised the grand jury.

The grand jurors were faced with massive amounts of data to consider. In a highly unusual move, the officer who did the shooting, Darren Wilson, was allowed to testify before the grand jury for nearly four hours, and his account of events leading up to the shooting went unchallenged by the prosecutor. The testimony of witnesses whose accounts differed from the officer’s was discounted by McCullough during a press conference following the grand jury’s decision.

To the great surprise of many observers who had closely followed events in Ferguson, McCullough decided to announce the grand jury’s decision at 8 p.m. A small minority of those protesting the decision turned to violence. Fires were set, looting took place and police vehicles were overturned. While arrests were made, there was no loss of life. Protests against the decision have

continued in Ferguson and in other parts of the country by people of all races. The decision by the grand jury and the turmoil that followed it is consistent with the deeply painful belief held by many in this country that lesser value is placed upon the lives of young black men in this country. A recent study by ProPublica, a media research organization in New York City, stated that black males in America were 21 times more likely to be shot by police than their white counterparts. In the wake of events in Ferguson President Obama convened a meeting at the White House of community activists, elected officials, law enforcement officials and members of the clergy to address the events that occurred in Ferguson and their aftermath. President Obama has pledged his personal involvement. As the proud mother of an African American son and the grandmother of three grandsons I can only imagine the depth of the wound that is in the hearts of Michael

Brown’s parents. Their son will not sit with them for another holiday meal. Nor will they see him graduate from college.

As a nation we must immediately address the social ills that lead to the senseless deaths of young black men. We must somehow harness the hurt and the anger that exists and create positive and lasting change.

Senseless tragedies can be avoided if we initiate and sustain dialogue and mutual respect among our youth, elected officials, clergy, community leaders and members of law enforcement. We must do this to ensure that events, like the shooting death of Michael Brown, do not occur on the streets of Ferguson, or on the streets of any of our cities and towns.

Ferguson and beyond

What is your one reason to smile?

One Reason to Smile wants your personal stories of joy and triumph to include in the upcoming coffee table book of the same name.

Founded in November 2014 by entrepreneur Anita Hawkins, One Reason to Smile is an inspiring Facebook community where uplifting messages are shared daily among the almost 800 members.

“One Reason to Smile is something given to me by God, that He put on my heart to share with others,” says Hawkins. “We are bombarded by so many horrible things in the news media on a daily basis, but I know that every individual out there has at least one reason to smile, something to be grateful for, and I wanted to build a community where

people could share their reasons for joy and be encouraged by others.”

The One Reason to Smile kick off event is on Saturday, December 13, 2014, 4-6 p.m., 1115 Beckley.

With dozens of posts coming in daily, Hawkins has decided to turn these positive messages into positive change in the lives of women who need it most.

“We have launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds to compile these personal stories into a coffee table book with 100% of the proceeds going to benefit the Women Called Moses Coalition and Outreach Center,” explains Hawkins.

Women Called Moses was created to be an underground railroad for victims of domestic violence. The non-profit organization seeks to prevent and end the cycle of violence against women through education and advocacy services provided to individuals, families and community agencies throughout the United States of America.

Women Called Moses addresses the despair of hopelessness and fear that victims of all ages and backgrounds face who are in crisis situations.  The agency helps victims find their voice that will help them determine their future.

To include your One Reason to Smile and support Women Called Moses, visit the Indiegogo page at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/find-one-reason-to-smile/x/9329533.  Select a donation level and pick your perk!

Advanced diagnostic imaging technology valued at millions of dollars, but priceless in terms of benefits to patients, is being installed and tested in the new Parkland hospital as staff prepare for the facility’s opening in mid-2015. Most of the new 862-bed hospital’s second floor is dedicated to Imaging Services, strategically located between the emergency and trauma departments on the first floor and surgical services and labor and delivery on the third floor. To expedite patient care, X-ray and CT equipment is also located in the emergency and trauma department; an MRI is housed in the fourth floor neonatal intensive care unit for pediatric patients; and a CT on the hospital’s 16th floor will serve neuro ICU patients. The second floor Imaging Center encompasses nearly 136,000 square feet, and more than 141,000 square feet are devoted to imaging overall in the new hospital. Imaging is the key to diagnosis and treatment for most patients, whether they suffer from heart disease, trauma, strokes or any of hundreds of other conditions. In the medical community, radiologists are known as “the doctor’s doctor,” because they are the behind-the-scenes diagnosticians who interpret images that “see” into a patient’s body to locate the source of a health problem and recommend treatment. Radiologists also are clinicians, performing interventional procedures using guided imaging

technologies that offer minimally-invasive treatments for many conditions. “The accuracy of the diagnosis depends both on the skill of the radiologist and the quality of images they view,” said Travis Browning, MD, Director of Radiology Informatics at Parkland Health & Hospital System and Assistant Professor, Abdominal Imaging at UT Southwestern Medical Center. “That’s why access to the most advanced imaging technology is so important.” According to Matthew C. Wied, clinical engineer at Parkland who leads the team installing and maintaining the imaging technology at the new Parkland hospital, “The tools of the radiologist’s trade are complex, powerful and expensive. They include X-ray and ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), nuclear medicine, positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).” The new Parkland will have the most advanced imaging equipment available. State-of-the-art dual source multi-slice CT scanners, 3.0T MRIs and a new PET CT scanner, a technology that Parkland has not owned before, are among the upgrades. Digital portable X-ray and ultrasound equipment will be available throughout the facility. Imaging modalities in the new Parkland facility will include four new Siemens Skyra MRI 3.0T machines, utilizing the most powerful magnets available. The

current Parkland hospital has only one MRI with 3.0T. The new Imaging Center will also include two stress echocardiogram suites, two endoscopy suites and five nuclear medicine rooms. In addition to equipping new Parkland hospital with state-of-the-art technology, imaging equipment will be deployed closer to the site of patient care. “We will have X-ray modalities in the trauma bays of the emergency department, which is uncommon in most hospitals, so the patient can get X-rays performed in the same room where urgent care is being provided,” Dr. Browning said. “The CT scanner in the Neuro ICU will mean that critically ill patients will not have to travel through the hospital for imaging services.” In the all-digital new Parkland, the Picture Archiving and Communication System known as PACS and electronic health record (EHR) are part of an integrated digital system that also will offer remote desktop shared conferences for electronic consultations between the treating physicians and radiologists. “We’re improving not only the technology, but also the radiology workflow to assure faster, safer patient care,” Dr. Browning stated. For more information about the new Parkland hospital, visit www.parklandhospital.com

“The phenomenon we have seen in America since the announcement of the non-indictments of officers in the killings of Michael Brown and Eric Garner is new to a generation, but not to the nation. Young people have always helped to fuel historic social

change. We must not forget – 50 years ago, it was young people on that bridge in Selma, Alabama; young people sitting-in in Greensboro, NC; young people riding Freedom buses all over this nation challenging conventional laws and the status quo; young people like Schwerner, Goodman and Chaney losing their lives in Philadelphia, Mississippi.

A multicultural band of young people, united with historic civil rights organizations, legislators, clergy, and everyday Americans who decided that it was time for our country to do better and be better, have been the impetus for so many of the changes we’ve witnessed as a nation through the decades.

Millions of Americans have now taken to the streets and to social media not because the problems that have caused the outrage just began yesterday, but because sometimes difficult circumstances present a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring about historic change. Now is that time. Now is our time.

This conversation and the subsequent action that will result from it will continue because we remain committed to the idea that these cases do not end where they are.

In addition to the opportunity for the Justice Department to conduct independent investigations, we each have an opportunity to participate in our great democracy by helping to

ensure that the America of tomorrow is better than who we are today.”

Promises, Promises Can I Believe YouFor a moment I’d like to think

through this thing called covenant. I understand the dictionary definition as you probably do also. But here I’d like to take a moment and look at it biblically. It is really something to think that God made a covenant with His people. That would mean you and me. In essence He’s made us a promise. Now if you’ve lived as long as I have, you’ve had people make promises to you that one, they had no intention of keeping and, two, they failed miserably while trying to keep their word. A third example would be he or she could have cared less about keeping a promise they made to you. Perhaps you are a promise breaker, rather than a promise keeper. I know I’ve broken a promise or two in my day. But the subject here is God. I’ve got to assume that if anybody keeps His Word, it’s got to be God. Therefore it stands to reason and faith that we should take to our graves the covenant promise God made to Abraham i.e.us. Lest we forget, it’s the one Jesus came to fulfill.

Now, if I’ve got the concept down and the importance associated with keeping one’s word, then I need to be more careful in the promises I make and to whom I make them. It

appears the foundation of spiritual belief is wrapped up in a simple promise. To Noah, “Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you green plants, I now give you everything.” Genesis 9:3. To Abraham, “As for me, this is my covenant with you…..you will be the father of nations….I wil l make nations of you and kings will come f rom you . I wi l l e s tab l i sh my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for generations to come, to be your God and the God of the descendants after you…..I will be their God.” Genesis 17:2-8. To Moses, “Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant then out of all nations, you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation…..” Exodus

19:5. From Jesus to the disciples, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood…for whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes….. 1 Corinthians 11:25-26.

Remember this is God talking about His promises to us. Have you made any promises to Him lately? What about to yourself about Him, or to someone who loves you or to someone you love? Have you kept them? Are you a covenant breaker or a covenant keeper? Do you believe you when you talk? Do you speak the truth when you do? There is a saying we’ve all heard about speaking the truth into existence; also, be careful about what you ask for. You see this covenant thing had a powerful beginning. A promise is downright godly. It has to be. The first one came from God to us through Adam and

Eve. It kind of gets all caught up in words and the power of words and the understanding of words; God’s words, your words and more words. They have incredible power, if we could always understand them in the context of covenant. They are really vehicles to communicate with each other and the original covenant maker. A reality for all of us is that we are accountable for our words and thereby our actions. My obligation then is to emulate God almighty in a manner befitting His divine order. “So shall my word be that goes forth out of your mouth…” Isaiah 55:11. This covenant is a wondrous thing because God keeps His word. The more we understand this, the more scripture opens up and reveals the true nature of God. If I am made in his image, honesty should be the stuff of which my promises are made. Truth is the essence of life and faith in God’s word is unshakeable . Hopefully, others can put their faith in my words and yours too.

May God bless and keep you always.

"Our people have made the mistake of confusing the methods with the objectives. As long as we agree on objectives, we should never fall out with each other just because we believe in different methods, or tactics, or strategy. We have to keep in mind at all times that we are not fighting for separation. We are fighting for recognition as free humans in this society."

Editor’s Note - Last week we inadvertently omitted part of Alma’s answer to the reader’s question. Here is the question and answer in its entirety. Please forgive us for the omission.

Dear Alma,I have been with this person for six years, and we’ve had our up and downs, like any relationship. We are living apart but he still wants us to keep our friendship. I don’t, because he needs to get himself together financially and mentally. Basically, I feel if someone truly loves you, they will do whatever it takes to be with the person. He’s just not moving fast enough for me. I do love him and want to be with him, but I can’t wait any longer. Now my problem is trying to move on and forget him. What’s the best way to handle this?

Name withheldDear Nameless,Six is the magic number. So you’ve been with him for six years. You

guys don’t live together; you aren’t engaged, and he needs to get it together. He wants to continue a “friendship,” but you want more, and since he hasn’t obliged, you’re ready to move on.First, I applaud you for making the decision to break it off, redefine, redirect and find your joy. Some people stay in an unfulfilled relationship for the sake of being in a relationship, and that’s never a healthy decision. Truth be told, let’s give him credit; a friendship is all that he wants, and a friendship is all that he has to offer – to you. You, on the other hand, have decided that’s not enough, and that’s ok. You know you better than anyone else. By making the decision to break it

off and move on in your mind, all you need now is for your heart to catch on. That ol’ heart always takes a little more time with this sorta thing, doesn’t it?While working through the heartache, keep in mind – after a break-up, we think…and ponder…and reminisce…about how we wish it could have been. I call that the coulda, shoulda, woulda stage. Since you will be thinking about it, for a little while anyway, put yourself on the path of thinking about the real deal of what’s been happening for the past six years. Even if you have to write it down. That way, you can recall and reread what really happened and how it made you feel.

Now, the next step toward moving on – take the time to refuel. I’d suggest focusing on what brings you strength. If there’s a particular minister or motivational speaker you like, listen to them, every day. If you like to walk, run, dance, workout, swim, do that for yourself – every day – or as much as you can. Download your best pick-me-up songs on your iPod, and listen to them. Hum along and take it all in.Let’s imagine you’re preparing to take a long road trip. Close your eyes, see yourself at a gas station; you’re filling up your tank – a red sports car, I hope, LOL. Do the same for your heart – refuel. Keep busy, find a new hobby. How about volunteering at church, with the elderly, a charity, or with kids? Take the focus off him and focus on you. Use this time to allow yourself to work on being the best person you can be, who without a doubt is taking the time to live her life to the fullest. You can do it!

Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news

media and intellectuals around the country have given their

grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100

days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several

people from the local front graded the new president.

Congresswoman EddieBernice Johnson

Grade:A“I am deeply impressed with the progress that

President Barack Obama has made during the first 100days of his administration. Already we are seeingevidence of the administration’s plan to dig our countryout of recession and develop long-term, sustainable pros-perity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to

repair our frayed alliances and restore ourinternational leadership.

Finally, the Obama adminis-tration’s code of ethicshas broughtmuch-neededtransparency andaccountability to theWhite House.

President Obamais delivering on thechange that hepromised.”

Senator Kay

Bailey HutchisonGrade: C

“In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming accel-

eration of policies that will take America down the

wrong track. The administration has proposed

trillions of dollars in new spending, which will

result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply

raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am

very concerned aboutthe President’s intention toclose Guantanamo without aworkable plan to relocatedetainees. It is mysincere hope that, movingforward,

theadminis-

tration willadopt the productive,

responsible approach to ournation’s challenges thatAmericansdeserve.”(The office of John Cornyn of

PROPOSITIONS

1 AND 2

Dallas is abuzz at theelection issues beforethem on May 9 whencitizens are asked tovote on the controver-sial ConventionCenter Hotel that isbeing backed byMayor

Leppert. But what doesvoting “no” and voting“yes” mean?It is important to

remember that thepropositions are toamend the Dallas CityCharter which, amongother things, gives thecity the power to acquireproperty for any publicpurpose. The propositionsare worded to prohibit thecity from acting on thesebefore stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen wouldlike the city to maintainthose powers, they are tovote NO and vice versa.
