Congratulations to Rooms 2, 10, 18, 20, 23 & 24 on having full attendance last week and to Room 1, 13 and 27 who almost made it! The teachers will let them know their reward.

A chairde,

Great News: Our new playground was commissioned last week and the children were able to start using it. As you can see by the pictures, it is a fantastic addition to our existing facilities in St Mary’s. Our thanks to our Board of Management for funding it and to the following teachers who helped in the design: Ms Finn, Mrs Munnelly and Ms Foley. I am sure that great use will be made of it for many, many years to come.

Please note that as and from last Wednesday, Junior Infant classes will be finishing at 2.00p.m and First Classes at 3.00p.m.

Junior Infants Parents’ Night Wednesday 28th September from 7.30 to 8.30.

Please note that the purpose Parents’/Open Night is to enable parents and teachers to meet, to enable parents/guardians see their child’s classroom and school and finally to enable the teachers to explain classroom routines and procedures. It is not a parent–teacher meeting. These will be held in February for Junior Infants, and of course where necessary at other times on request. So, come along, see the school, meet the teacher and find out how you can help your child/ren make better progress this coming school year.

Friendship Week

This week is Friendship Week and each class will be undertaking activities and lessons which promote positive relationships in our school. This is an ideal time to remind those who have not already done so to read our school ‘Anti – Bullying Policy’ given out on enrolment and also contained in our homework journals. Spare copies can be e-mailed to you (we are a Green School!) on request.

As a follow-up, on Thursday 29th Paula O Connor will speak to our Sixth Class pupils on Internet Safety and Cyber-bullying as well as to all parents/guardians that night night @ 7.30. in the Dr Eileen Reilly Hall. All welcome no matter what class your child is in. As Frankie used to say; “It may not be your problem now but it could be someday!”

Please note that we promote healthy lunches in our school, so no sweets, crisps, fizzy drinks etc. For some good ideas Google “healthy school lunch ideas for kids”!

School photographer: will be coming on the 27th September, as mentioned in our school Calendar. He will be taking photographs of all children. If you do not wish your child to have his/her photograph taken, please let us know. A note in the Homework Journal will suffice. Group photographs will be taken for Junior Infants and Sixth Classes only. Proofs will be available before purchase, about two weeks afterwards. Please ensure that your child is in school uniform (Senior Infants to Sixth classes) and not tracksuit on this day, Junior Infant children to wear tracksuit. They may bring a tracksuit to change into after swimming, if this applies. Please note that we have requested the photographer to take photos of all children for school records

Registration for Banna Ceoil

Tomorrow, Tuesday 20th September 3.00-3.30 pm in The Dr Eileen Reilly Hall.

No practice on that day. First practice is the following Tuesday 27th September 3-3.30pm for Second Class and 3.00-4.00 for Third to Sixth. There will be a registration fee of €5 to cover admin etc.

All pupils from Second class up are welcome to take part in our Banna Ceoil. We look forward to another busy year of musical activities. A parent/minder needs to sign the form. If you are not available to attend registration, your daughter can collect a form and return it to the school.

Mrs McGale

Waiting List: We are pleased to announce that we no longer have a waiting list to get in to our school. Places are currently available and will be for the foreseeable future.

Fundraising: On October 13th and 14th this year we will be having “Powerball 600” to raise funds for our All-Weather (MUGA) Pitch. We decided to go with a sporting theme for a sporting facility. On Thursday next, League of Ireland’s Richie Baker will explain to us at an assembly (1.00 p.m.) how it all works. As it involves sponsorship cards, we will not be having our annual Readalong sponsored in November. In the new year we will be having an “Oscars Night” and all monies raised will go to our MUGA Fund. This currently lies at €44,797.66. Depending on a Sports Capital Programme grant, we hope to have the MUGA built by the end of 2017. The Oscars will be a similar venture to our very successful “Strictly” held earlier this year so if you are a good actor or even a bad actor and would like sign up, please contact me.

(Mercy Day September 24th:“Let nothing interest you but what relates to God’s glory”. This maxim is from the sayings of Venerable Catherine McAuley foundress of the Sisters of Mercy. Friday 23rd is Mercy Day. We take this opportunity to wish the Mercy Sisters in our town a very happy feast day. We thank them for their devotion and dedication since they came to Trim in 1868.)

Cyber-bullying Awareness:

An invaluable cyber-bullying awareness workshop for 6th Class pupils will take place in St Mary’s on Thursday, September 29th. The workshop will be facilitated by Paula O’Connor. Paula is a cyber-bullying and internet-safety expert. She is the force behind the “Don’t Be Mean Behind Your Screen” initiative. Items under the microscope at the daytime workshop will include mobile phones, the internet, social media and practical strategies to deal with online bullying.

Technology is advancing at an unbelievable pace. It is important that parents/guardians are always equipped with up-to-date information about the ever-increasing dependence of the youth on mobile/smart phones, the inherent risks that can develop around social media and the necessity of parental supervision when children are online. Paula will deliver a revealing presentation to parents/guardians in St Mary’s on Thursday, September 29th at 7.30pm. ALL parents/guardians associated with St Mary’s are invited to the talk. Please come along, ask questions and be informed!D. Galligan

The Parents Association AGM will be held on Wednesday the 5th of October at 8pm and all parents/guardians are welcome to attend.  Mr. O' Coigligh will be present to give an overview of how the school is progressing and we will also have a guest speaker who will be talking to us about Healthy Eating.  The committee members of the Parents Association look forward to welcoming you all to the meeting where you have the opportunity to learn more about the work that the PA does to benefit the school and where you can voice any ideas/queries you may have regarding our role within the school. Tea/Coffee and biscuits will be provided.

Secretary

Green News

‘Let us say ‘no to an economy of exclusion and inequality, where money rules, rather than service. That economy excludes. That economy destroys Mother Earth’ (Pope Francis)

The Green theme which we are exploring since last year is that of Global Citizenship. A global citizen cares passionately about others and the world they live in. An active global citizen takes action to support causes they believe in. Here at St Mary’s we are actively trying to care for our world and our immediate surroundings. We start small but our actions will hopefully have far-reaching effects.

We are concentrating on the theme of Litter and Waste this year. We recycle many items at school: batteries, card, small plastic bottles, mobile phones, postage stamps and footwear. As part of our recycling campaign, we are having clothes drive on September 29th. Please drop off any fabrics, footwear and textiles that morning. Lenrec has worked with the school before and we would encourage you to support this initiative.

Our COW and WOW initiatives have started up again and there are many people participating. We would encourage even more to take this healthy approach to getting to school in the mornings. . Walkers meet up at Mornington House or down at the Matchbox. It is so much more beneficial to walk or cycle to school.

Cyclists meet up inside the entrance to Steeple Manor at 8:55am. There won’t be many Wednesdays left to cycle to school as the weather will be deteriorating (even further) soon. Remember to wear your hi-viz vests and helmets when you cycle.

Paddy Madden, the School Garden expert from Marino College is visiting our school on Oct 11. He will advise us about setting up our herb, vegetable and sensory garden. If there are any parents, guardians or other family members interested in forming a gardening committee, please let us know. We would value your time, input and cooperation.

Ní neart go cur le chéile!

Remember Green is cool at home and at school and around the Globe!
