ICS Goes Global with Qatar

by Zian Lane (8A) Have you ever had a vision where you were talking to people across the world without even leaving your com-puter screen? Well, in the Global No-mads Group (GNG) that vision be-comes a reality. Global Nomads Group is part of a virtual exchange program called Connecting Cultures, Exploring Science (CCES). CCES pairs secondary school classrooms in Qatar and the U.S. to build awareness about environmental issues as well as cultural awareness. Each week a select group of eighth graders come in on Wednesday morn-ings before school to prep for our video conference with high school students in Qatar. Qatar is a country along the coast in the Middle East neighboring the island kingdom of Bahrain. Some of the prep work that GNG does is brainstorming ideas for solutions to climate change and re-searching ways to reduce our carbon footprint. During the actual video conference, each group begins with a brief introduction. Following the in-troductions, the groups ask questions back and forth about climate change and how we can solve it. Throughout the exchanges between schools, a me-diator in another state maintains con-trol in the conversation and keeps the communication flowing. In the last few minutes of the video conference, each group displays their talents in a

showcase. The talents vary from a song, to a game, to even a dog coming in! After the showcases the mediator closes out the conference. In our most recent video conference, our ICS GNG and the GNG in Qatar had a structured debate about what action should be taken for climate change and what countries should be held responsible. Both groups had well-structured points that were taken into consideration by the opposing side. After each video conference our group advisor, Mr. Gregory Louie, gives out informational packets for us to have a better understanding of what our next topic is. The Global Nomads Group is a great way to become well rounded and have a new experience. The cultural differ-ence was not prominent but it was present during the conferences. The students in Qatar listened to the same type of music that the Immaculata students listened too, but during every video conference our legs had to be covered because it was a sign of re-spect. The Global Nomads Group made it fun to talk to people all the way across the world and be able to relate and work together towards solv-ing problems to better the Earth we live in.

Spotlight on Mrs. Weeks Tucked away in a cozy corner room on the second floor of Immaculata Catholic School, Mrs. Kathleen Weeks can be found instructing her middle-school students in the proper-ties of geometry and special quantities. With almost two decades of experi-ence, she is an inspiring math teacher who wants to help her students change the world. She engages them to do so by sharing her faith in the form of weekly readings or video view-ings that have moral messages rooted in Catholicism. Her integration of lessons in mathematical subject matter with Christian faith formation is what makes Mrs. Weeks such a valued member of the Immaculata commu-nity. Before becoming a teacher, Mrs. Weeks earned her undergraduate de-gree from Our Lady of the Lake Uni-versity in Texas and a master’s degree from the University of Texas at Aus-tin—both with a major in chemistry and a minor in math. After complet-ing school, she moved from Texas to Louisiana, Connecticut, Michigan, and, finally, North Carolina. During that time, she held various profes-sional positions as a law office recep-tionist, portrait model, assistant to the director of elementary faith develop-ment, and, most notably, a chemist at a tin smelter (the only one of its kind in the Western Hemisphere at the time of her employment). Mrs. Weeks also found time to serve as a captain in the Civil Air Patrol, as well as the

local deputy commander for cadets for the squadron in Orange County, North Carolina. In addition to her life’s educational and professional milestones, Mrs. Weeks and her husband, a medical physicist, raised four children who are now a graduate student studying com-puter science, a first-year medical resi-dent who is also in the army, a gradu-ate student majoring in accounting, and a professional software developer. When she is not teaching at Immacu-lata or spending time with her family, Mrs. Weeks enjoys reading, quilting, or practicing her new favorite sport, archery. She has no shortage of excit-ing interests and honorable life experi-ences to share with her students and fellow staff!
