Blindness so that we might see each other as brothers and sisters, one and equal in dignity, especially those

and those abandoned, Men and women oppressed because of race or creed, religion or gender. We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearing the voice of leaders who will bring us closer to your Kingdom. We

Sunday, November 1, 2020: Solemnity of All Saints

Normally a separate Holy Day of Obligation, but since All Saints Day falls on a Sunday

this year, your regular Sunday Mass will fulfill the obligation.

Jesus said to one of the Pharisees, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments." [Matthew 22: 37-40] What is the greatest commandment ever written? Which of the commandment in the law is the greatest? This is the question asked to Jesus by one of the Pharisees, a scholar of the law, upon knowing that he had recently silenced the Sadducees in their debates. Jesus answers by quoting the Shema, a Hebrew text consisting of three passages from the Pentateuch beginning with, “Hear, O Israel, the Lord is God, the Lord is one.” It forms an important part of Jewish Evening and Morning Prayer, and is used as a Jewish confession of faith. This first part of the response of Jesus should have been an expected response. Every faithful Jew would know about the Shema. However, Jesus added another commandment, which in reality is not new. He quotes the book of Leviticus 19: 18,

which says, “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.” By adding this commandment from the Book of Leviticus, Jesus makes the Shema new and challenging. For him it is not enough to say that one loves God with all of his or her being. One has to show this love in concrete action by loving one’s neighbor. For Jesus, this is the best way to show that one loves God in real terms. Loving God and loving our neighbor have become a great commandment that would not make sense when one is separated from the other. True and authentic love spring from this joined commandment that functions as one and the same. Do we truly understand this great commandment in actual practice? Have we even tried to make this happen in our lives as Christians? I believe if all of us try our very best to put this into practice, there will be peace and joy in the world. The fact that war, conflicts between states and governments, not to mention societies and communities and even families abound means that this elusive commandment is yet to be put to reality. In addition, the best way to make this happen is to start doing it ourselves, like the song entitled “Let There Be Peace on Earth” by Sy Miller and Jill Jackson: “Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.”

In the Gospel of Matthew we have the encounter between the Pharisees and Jesus. The

Pharisees were experts in keeping the law. They were well aware of the ten mandates of the law. For them, the perfect relationship with God consisted in keeping the command-

ments. They thought that this made them more worthy before God.

Choosing one commandment more important than the other was not an option for them. When Jesus was asked, "Teacher, what is the greatest commandment in the law?" They

thought it was a question that Jesus was not going to be able to answer; they wanted me

to fall into the trap.

But Jesus answered them: “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first of the command-ments. And the second is similar to this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. In these

two commandments are founded all the law and the prophets. "

Laws are necessary to maintain order in a society. But the laws, just in case alone, they are

dry and can often be sources of injustice.

Jesus does not ask us to stop complying with the laws, but he does tell us that we are miss-

ing something: Love.

Love is the basis of all law and of all prophetic effort. It is because of the desire to love us

better that the laws were written. Laws alone are not enough for mutual love to be born. The gift of prophecy stems from a deep love for God and others. Love allows us to know ourselves deeply, this is why the prophets are able to see the direction of the lives of those

they love. That is why parents are prophets, thanks to the love they have for their children.

It has been given to our neighbor to know God better. We recognize that for relate and get

closer to God we have to relate and get closer to others. We are good to others when we recognize that God has been good to us. If we fail to love others it is because we have

forgotten how God loves us. If we fail is that we have forgotten how to love ourselves.

Jesús le respondió: "Amarás al Señor, tu Dios, con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma y con toda tu mente. Este es el más grande y el primero de los mandamientos, y el segundo es semejante a éste: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. En estos dos mandamientos se fundan toda la Ley y los profetas.” [Mateo 22: 37-40]

¿Cuál es el mandamiento más grande jamás escrito? ¿Cuál de los mandamientos de la ley es el mayor? Esta es la pregunta que le hizo a Jesús uno de los fariseos, un estudioso de la ley, al saber que recientemente había silenciado a los saduceos en sus debates. Jesús responde citando el Shemá, un texto hebreo que consta de tres pasajes del Pentateuco que comienzan con: "Oye, Israel, el Señor es Dios, el Señor es solamente uno". Esto forma una parte importante de la oración judía vespertina y matutina, y se utiliza como confesión de fe judía. Esta primera parte de la respuesta de Jesús debería haber sido una respuesta esperada. Todo judío fiel sabría sobre el Shemá. Sin embargo, Jesús agregó otro mandamiento, que en realidad no es nuevo. El cita el libro de Levítico 19:18, que dice: “No busques venganza ni guardes rencor contra nadie de tu pueblo, sino ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. Yo soy el Señor ".

Al agregar este mandamiento del Libro de Levítico, Jesús hace que el Shemá sea nuevo y desafiante. Para él no es suficiente decir que uno ama a Dios con todo su ser. Uno tiene que mostrar este amor en acciones concretas amando al prójimo. Para Jesús, esta es la mejor manera de demostrar que uno ama a Dios en términos reales. Amar a Dios y amar al prójimo se ha convertido en un gran mandamiento que no tendría sentido cuando uno está separado del otro. El amor verdadero y auténtico surge de este mandamiento unido que funciona como uno y el mismo. ¿Comprendemos realmente este gran mandamiento en la práctica? ¿Hemos intentado siquiera que esto suceda en nuestras vidas como cristianos? Creo que, si todos hacemos nuestro mejor esfuerzo para poner esto en práctica, habrá paz y alegría en el mundo. El hecho de que abundan las guerras, los conflictos entre estados y gobiernos, sociedades y comunidades e incluso familias, significa que este mandamiento escurridizo aún no se ha hecho realidad. Además, la mejor manera de hacer que esto suceda es comenzar a hacerlo nosotros mismos, como la canción titulada “Que haya paz en la tierra” de Sy Miller y Jill Jackson: “Que haya paz en la tierra, y que comience conmigo. "

En el evangelio de Mateo tenemos el encuentro entre los fariseos y Jesús. Los fariseos

eran expertos en cumplir con la ley. Estaban bien pendientes a los diez mandatos de la ley. Para ellos, la perfecta relación con Dios constaba en cumplir con los mandamientos. Ellos pensaban que esto los hacía más dignos ante Dios.

Escoger un mandamiento más importante que el otro, no era una opción para ellos. Cuando le preguntaron a Jesús: “Maestro, ¿cuál es el mandamiento más grande de la ley?” Pensaban que era una pregunta que Jesús no iba a poder responder; querían que

cayera en la trampa. Pero Jesús les respondió: “Amarás al Señor, tu Dios, con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma y con toda tu mente. Éste es el más grande y el primero de los mandamientos. Y el

segundo es semejante a éste: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. En estos dos mandamientos se fundan toda la ley y los profetas.”

Las leyes son necesarias para mantener el orden en una sociedad. Mas las leyes, por si solas, son secas y pueden muchas veces ser fuentes de injusticias. Jesús no nos pide que dejemos de cumplir con las leyes, pero si nos quiere decir que nos

falta algo: el Amor. El Amor es la base de toda la ley y de todo esfuerzo profético. Por el deseo de amarnos

mejor es que las leyes fueron escritas. Las leyes por si solas no nos suficientes para que nazca el amor mutuo. El don de la profecía nace de un amor profundo a Dios y a otros. El amor nos permite conocernos profundamente, es por esto que los profetas son capaces de ver la dirección de las vidas de aquellos a quienes aman. Por eso los padres son

profetas, gracias al amor que le tienen a sus hijos. Se nos ha regalado al prójimo para conocer mejor a Dios. Reconocemos que para

relacionarnos y acercarnos a Dios tenemos que relacionarnos y acercarnos a los otros. Somos buenos con otros, cuando reconocemos que Dios ha sido bueno con nosotros. Si fallamos en amar a otros es porque se nos ha olvidado como Dios nos ama. Si fallamos es que hemos olvidado de como amarnos a nosotros mismos.

success story? Indeed! Beyond Simon’s being

a “ Zealot” for Israel’s liberation and Jude’s question about Jesus revealing himself (John 14:22), no historic facts are known about either saint. But Saint Jude’s

well-known patronage of lost causes and hopeless cases is largely due to a

desperate vow made just before World War II by a struggling entertainer, the son of Arab-American immigrants, Danny Thomas. Unemployed, his wife about to

give birth, Danny, attending Mass, impulsively donated his last seven dollars to the collection, promising: “Saint Jude, if you help me find my way in life, I will build a shrine in your honor!” Older Americans remember well Danny’s long, successful

movie and television career. Grateful parents worldwide know the miracles that have taken place for fifty years at his Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital,

where needy children are cared for regardless of race, religion, or financial

resources, and monumental advances continue in healing and preventing

pediatric cancers and catastrophic childhood diseases. A living, life-giving

LIVING JUSTLY “You give that back right now!” How many of us have heard that line, probably more than once, as we were growing up? We come home with the trophy of what we thought was a really sweet deal, only to

have our parents undo our profits by making us return the spoils. They had a

different idea of what constituted a “fair trade agreement.” Justice in our

dealings with others continues to be an important measure of our character, and like a good parent, God cares very much about how we treat each other and about how others treat us. God hears the cry of

the poor, and answers the call of the oppressed. God’s beloved children are not

SANTOS DE LA SEMANA

SANTOS SIMÓN Y JUDAS (Siglo I) Festividad: 28 de octubre

Simón fue uno de los Doce y para distinguirlo de Simón Pedro, le llamaban el “zelote”, porque pertenecía a un grupo de judíos que esperaban la venida del Mesías

como una liberación de Roma y sus impuestos. Además de los Doce nombres, Judas es mencionado en el Evangelio de

san Juan al preguntarle a Jesús la razón por la cual sólo se manifiesta a ellos y no al mundo entero. Judas Tadeo, para distinguirlo del Iscariote, también fue de los Doce Apóstoles. Se cree que Judas se fue a predicar a Mesopotamia (actual Iraq), mientras que Simón se fue a predicar a Egipto. De alguna manera se unieron para evangelizar Persia (actual Irán) y ahí

fueron martirizados. A Judas se le considera el autor de la carta de Judas que aparece en el Nuevo Testamento. En sólo 25 versos, el apóstol distingue a los líderes de los falsos

maestros. Aunque ocupa el último lugar en la lista de los Doce, Judas Tadeo es el santo patrono de las causas difíciles y desesperadas. Goza de un gran afecto entre

VIVIR EN JUSTICIA “¡Devuélvelo ahora mismo!” ¿Cuántas veces hemos escuchado esa frase, probablemente más

de una vez, cuando éramos niños? Llegamos a casa con el trofeo que consideramos un dulce hallazgo, para que nuestros padres deshicieran nuestras ganancias haciéndonos

devolver el botín. Ellos tenían un concepto muy diferente de lo que constituye un acuerdo “de intercambio justo”. La justicia en nuestros tratos con otros constituye una importante medida

de nuestro carácter, como un buen padre de familia, a Dios le importa mucho cómo nos tratamos los unos a los otros y cómo los otros nos tratan a nosotros. Dios oye el clamor de los pobres y responde al llamado de los oprimidos. Los hijos bien amados de Dios no se han de

Following the current orders from Governor Newsom and the directives from the

Archdiocese of Los Angeles, effective immediately, churches are allowed to do

worships services when it is done outdoors. In view of this, we are going to set up our Sunday masses outdoors in our church parking lot.

Our IN– PERSON OUTDOOR Mass times will be as follows:

For social distancing reasons, we do have the 6 feet requirement.

In order for you to attend, YOU WILL NEED TO CALL & RESERVE.

Please call the parish office at 323.660.0034. If the line is busy, please call again. Reservations will be taken the week BEFORE the Mass itself.

Confirmation number will be required for all attendees. Limited capacity.
