Opening Hymn—“Be Still, My Soul” - #752

Text: Public domain

Confession & Absolution—Divine Service, Setting Five (LSB 213) Leader: In the name of the Father and of the † Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

Leader: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

Leader: Our help is in the name of the Lord,

People: who made heaven and earth.

Leader: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,

People: and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

1 Be still, my soul; the Lord is on your side; Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain; Leave to your God to order and provide; In ev’ry change He faithful will remain. Be still, my soul; your best, your heav’nly Friend Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

2 Be still, my soul; your God will undertake

To guide the future as He has the past. Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake;

All now mysterious shall be bright at last.

Be still, my soul; the waves and winds still know His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.

3 Be still, my soul; though dearest friends depart

And all is darkened in this vale of tears; Then you will better know His love, His heart,

Who comes to soothe your sorrows and your fears. Be still, my soul; your Jesus can repay

From His own fullness all He takes away.

4 Be still, my soul; the hour is hast’ning on When we shall be forever with the Lord, When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored. Be still, my soul; when change and tears are past, All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.

Leader: O almighty God, merciful Father,

People: I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal

punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bit-

ter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

Leader: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of

the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the com-

mand of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the † Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

† Service of the Word †

greatness.

ginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.

Collect of the Day Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

Leader: Let us pray.

Gracious God, our heavenly Father, Your mercy attends us all our days. Be our strength and support amid the wearisome changes of this world, and at life’s end

grant us Your promised rest and the full joys of Your salvation ; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now

and forever.

People: Amen.

The Old Testament Reading—Zechariah 9:9-12 ESV 9Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!

behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he,

humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem;

and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace to the nations; his rule shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. 11As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you,

I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. 12Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope;

today I declare that I will restore to you double.

Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

The Epistle Reading—Romans 7:14-25a ESV 14For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. 15I do not

understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. 17So now it is no

longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry

it out. 19For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.

21So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22For I de-

light in the law of God, in my inner being, 23but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my

members. 24Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Leader: This is the Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

The Gospel Reading—Matthew 11:25-30 ESV

Leader: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the tenth chapter. People: Glory to You, O Lord.

25At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have

hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27All things have been handed over to me by my

Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the

Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am

gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Leader: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, O Christ.

Sermon—“The King is Coming” - Zechariah 9:9-12

Pledge of Allegiance & Pledge to the Cross

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands,

one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

I pledge allegiance to the cross, of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the faith for which it stands, one Savior, eternal with mercy and grace for all.

1 Savior, like a shepherd lead us;

Much we need Your tender care. In Your pleasant pastures feed us,

For our use Your fold prepare. Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,

You have bought us; we are Yours.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, You have bought us; we are Yours.

2 We are Yours; in love befriend us,

Be the guardian of our way; Keep Your flock, from sin defend us,

Seek us when we go astray. Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,

Hear us children when we pray. Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,

Hear us children when we pray.

3 You have promised to receive us,

Poor and sinful though we be; You have mercy to relieve us,

Grace to cleanse, and pow’r to free. Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,

Early let us turn to You.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, Early let us turn to You.

4 Early let us seek Your favor,

Early let us do Your will; Blessed Lord and only Savior,

With Your love our spirits fill. Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,

You have loved us, love us still. Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,

You have loved us, love us still.

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church,

the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life † everlasting. Amen.

Closing Hymn—“God Bless Our Native Land” - #965

Text: Public Domain

Go In Peace!

1 God bless our native land;

Firm may she ever stand Through storm and night.

When the wild tempests rave, Ruler of wind and wave,

Do Thou our country save

By Thy great might.

2 So shall our prayers arise

To God above the skies; On Him we wait.

Thou who art ever nigh, Guarding with watchful eye,

To Thee aloud we cry:

God save the state!
