With the busy year-end holiday timeapproaching, we often nd our-

selves bracing for the chaos ahead.Even as Christians who recognizethe reason for the season, its hardto not get swept up in the urgencyof serving, shopping, cooking, entertaining, traveling, and evenhelping out with special programsat church.

Thats why wed like to encourageyou this year with a heartfelt mes-sage that we try to embrace in ev-erything we do at NCF: the theme

ofSimplify, Multiply, Glorify. If everthis message rings true, its at thistime of year when we can all use asimpler approach, a more bountifulspirit, a greater sense of awe.

To prepare your heart to abide inthe true spirit of giving, here aresome practical questions and oppor-tunities you may want to consider:

    1. Do your loved ones know howyou came to know the Lord?

Before the end of the year, shareyour greatest gift, the story ofyour faith journey. Spend yourThanksgiving or Christmas re-deeming the time with the storyof your redemption.

    2. Do your loved ones know aboutthe ministries you support? Thinkof a creative way to expose themto the causes close to your heart.Could you volunteer together orgo on a mission trip? Now thats

a gift that will last a lifetime.

    3. Have you considered using yournancial capital to build spiritualcapital in others? Use yourresources to shape someonespiritually by sending them ona short-term mission trip or toa conference like GenerousGivings or The Gatherings.

We hope that youll think of othergreat ways to make this year memo-rable and unique. Visit our blog atnationalchristian.com for more tipsthroughout the season.

With the holidays quickly approaching, were all thinkingabout ways we can help ourselves, as well as our family

and friends, experience the Christ-child in an evendeeper way. In Henry Blackabys Experiencing Godseries, he says that one of the best ways to experienceGod is to get in on what God is up to.

So how do we know what God is up to? One of theclearest ways to see God at work is to reect on whatHe was up to during His life on earth. Jesus spread thegospel, healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ministeredto the lost and hurting.

When you consider this, its easy to see these samethings are a priority for Him today. And we get to be

a part of this life-changing work when we open up ourhearts through the generous giving of our time, talents, and treasure.

While the Apostle Paul says in Ephesians that we havebeen saved by faith, he also afrms the importantrole we have as the hands and feet of Jesus in theworld today: For we are Gods handiwork, created in

Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared inadvance for us to do (Ephesians 2:10, NIV).

So as we experience God in deeper ways, our prayer isthat well be able to say like Jesus in John 17:4, I havebrought you glory on earth by nishing the work yougave me to do.

    Together serving Him,

Stck p n gvng! How to multiply your impact using publicly traded securities

With all the emphasis on stretching a dollar these days, have you thought about how to make your giving dol-

lars go further this season? If youre getting ready towrite checks to charity or make cash contributions toyour NCF Giving Fund, you may want to re-think yourstrategy. By gifting appreciated stocks or mutual fundsinstead, you could tap into an incredible opportunityto pay less tax, give more, improve your personal cashow, and simplify the process of supporting yourfavorite ministries.

The key lies in the capital gains tax savings that comewith asset-based giving. For example, if you sold

$10,000 worth of stock and gave the proceeds to multi-ple charities (see the left pie chart below), youd rst pay

capital gains on the appreciated stock. Youd also haveto keep track of every tax receipt manually.

Or, as the pie chart on the right illustrates, you couldgive $10,000 worth of stock to your Giving Fund. Theshares you donated would be sold by NCF tax-free, withproceeds placed in your Fund. This gift would also qual-ify for a $10,000 charitable deduction. You could thenre-fund your portfolio using the $10,000 cash you wouldhave given and reset your cost basis. And with your taxsavings, you could give even more.

When we talk about spendingmoney with our kids, we use tooland toy terminology. A toy is some-thing we would buy for our ownpleasure, comfort, or fun. A tool issomething we would buy that Godcould use in His service. We try tominimize the investment in toys andmaximize the investment in tools.

One of the tools we have spent afair amount of money on for our

kids is international travel. Theyvebeen able to see what God is doingall over the world.

It has been a blessing for my chil-dren to not grow up as rich kids. They have the privilege of sittingaround our dinner table with peoplefrom dozens of different countries asthey come through the U.S. to hearwhat God is doing in Libya, in Iraq,

or in China. They have grown uphearing about how great God is andseeing rsthand what He is doingall over the world. I think that is somuch better than video games, tripsto Disney World, or the things thattheyve not been able to do.

Several years ago, when we wentthrough the process of basically giv-ing our company away, it was not atraumatic experience for them. They

were totally on board with it. Myoldest son said, Thank you, thankyou for doing this. This saved me alot of potential heartache.

We dont indulge their every desire, but thats freeing for our kids. Wespend a lot of time with them, andwe opened their eyes by takingthem around the world.

The Bible says to leave a rich inheri-tance for your children, and I thinkthat has little to do with money.I want to leave a rich inheritanceof faith, education, ability, andmotivation.
