When Karen Gonzalez graduated from Larkin High School, her excellent grade point average and résumé made her an ideal candidate for nursing programs across the country. But rather than attend the University of Illinois at Chicago, Gonzalez felt Elgin Community College was a better fit. She now serves as ECC Student Government President, is a member of the All-Illinois Community College Academic Team, and is an active participant in the life of the institution—all while maintaining high marks in her classes.

The team at Lundstrom Insurance understands the importance of honoring excellence. In December 2011, the firm pledged $25,000 to open an endowed scholarship fund to support outstanding ECC students, like Karen Gonzalez, as they pursue their educational aspirations.

“Our business is built on providing our clients with peace of mind and security to assist them in achieving their dreams,” says Brett Lundstrom, president and CEO of Lundstrom Insurance. “Our gift to the ECC Academic and Leadership Excellence Scholarship Fund is another way for us to express our

organizational values and continue our history of investing in our community.”

Lundstrom Insurance has been present in the Elgin community for decades. Through three generations of family leadership, Lundstrom Insurance has served as a model business by fostering a client-centered culture and carrying on a tradition of trust and integrity.

Scholarship support provided by Lundstrom Insurance will assist aspiring students from the ECC district who have demonstrated superior academic achievement and community leadership strengths throughout their high school educational experience. The endowed fund will generate a pool of awards to support generations of future ECC students as they continue to advance themselves in pursuit of a college degree or certificate.

To honor this local business’ investment in students, ECC will adorn a study room in the new Renner Academic Library and Learning Resources with the Lundstrom Insurance name.

2012Founders’DayBrunchOpening New DoorsThough the 14th annual Founders’ Day Brunch was held Sunday, January 29, the theme for the event emerged at the December 2011 graduation, where Dr. Sam told the new graduates, “Today, you have opened a door that cannot be closed to you again.”

The 2012 brunch, themed Opening New Doors to Knowledge, continued the ECC Foundation’s long history of making learning opportunities available to students. The event raised over $58,000 in support of student scholarships, enhanced instructional programs, and other areas of pressing needs to enable student success.

One such student and current benefactor of foundation scholarship support, Guadalupe “Lupe” Jaramillo, shared his appreciation with brunch-goers, telling the audience that the news of his scholarship “filled my parents with pride and honor.” He is currently a second-year student studying heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration at ECC, and plans to graduate in May 2012. Taking to heart the true value of his own educational endeavors at ECC, the appreciative student told the attendees, “I have learned throughout my academic and personal experiences that life is not about what you receive but what you give as well.”

World-renowned photographer Sandro Miller received the Distinguished Alumnus Award. During his acceptance, Miller told the crowd how two of his ECC photography professors changed his life because of their spirit, passion for the art, and their constant praise. Miller’s award-winning career includes his charitable work with photography students in Chicago. He speaks, lectures, reviews portfolios, and offers an open-door policy to students to share their dreams and frustrations, giving them the same encouragement he needed to believe in himself.

Additional award recipients included former Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce President and ECC Foundation Board member Leo Nelson who received the Distinguished Friend of Education Award, and ECC Foundation Board member Shawn Kluber who was honored with the Exceptional Friend of the ECC Foundation Award.

Profile:2012DistinguishedAlumnusAward-Winner sandro MillerSandro Miller was named the Elgin Community College 2012 Distinguished Alumnus at the Founders’ Day Brunch on January 29 for his accomplishments as a world-renowned portrait photographer.

Miller’s passion for photography began at age 16 while viewing portrait images by the great master photographer Irving Penn. He bought his first Nikon camera, took photography classes, and began taking pictures every day of his life.

At the ceremony, Miller told the audience, “The summer of 1977, I recall telling my mother that I wanted to go to college for photography. My mother had tears in her eyes as I told her of my plans to enter Elgin Community College and to attend their photography program.”

Miller was inspired by the teachings of two professors of photography at ECC—Lou Krueger and John Grady—who gave him encouragement and praise regarding his work. They thought he had something special and had a gift for photography.

“I was always very proud of where I chose to go; it was the right place for me to be at the right time of my life,” Miller says. “I received an invaluable education, but mostly, I received the encouragement, the care, and the passion from teachers who had the same love of photography that I had.”

Today, Miller is one of the foremost photographers in the world with numerous award-winning campaigns to his credit. He has photographed many national advertising campaigns, and Archive Magazine named him one of the 200 best advertising photographers the past four consecutive years. He has also been included in the Graphis: Best 100 in Photography in 2010 and 2011. At an awards ceremony in Cannes, France, in July, Miller was selected to be included in the Saatchi and Saatchi Best New Directors Showcase for his short film “Butterflies” featuring actor John Malkovich.

After 35 years in this business, Miller says, “I can still say I love what I do today as much as the first day I discovered the work of Irving Penn, and my first days at ECC. I will be forever grateful to those years and the decision I made to attend ECC.”

ECCRetireesEnjoy Under the StreetlampOn November 13, 2011 the ECC Foundation hosted an evening full of gratitude and appreciation for ECC retirees. The evening began with a matinee performance of Under the Streetlamp (a revue by the cast of Jersey Boys) in the Visual and Performing Arts Center, followed by a reception in Spartan Terrace Restaurant. Thanks to the special efforts of Steve Duchrow, the college’s director of performing arts, a “surprise” visit to the reception by the Streetlamp cast gave the evening a special glow. To add to the

excitement, two former deans on the ECC retiree committee, Jack Weiss and Polly Nash, silenced the room with a showing of their masterpiece, an ECC retiree photo album video. The video presented photos of retirees going back to the college’s first president.

“All I can say is that I was in awe of the video that Polly and Jack made,” said Marilyn Westerhoff, retired professor and member of the planning committee. “It was so rewarding to see many long-time ECC friends back on campus.”

“The show was outstanding, but the real beauty of the event was the re-connection with some of our retired ECC colleagues,” stated Linda Hefferin, EdD, faculty liaison to the ECC Foundation Board of Directors.

Of the 94 in attendance, nearly 70 percent were ECC retirees and their guests. Members of the college’s Board of Trustees and Foundation Board members also attended, along with college president David Sam, PhD, JD.

ECC Foundation Vice Chair Caren Nickelsen led the efforts to create five memorable gift baskets and secure a signed photograph of the cast; the items were raffled off during the reception. Murna Hansemann, entertained the group by playing the piano throughout the evening reception. Thanks to all who helped make this event a success, including the ECC Foundation Board of Directors, Community College District 509, Board of Trustees, ECCP3, and college staff (especially the Arts Center and Spartan Terrace Restaurant).

Bruce R. Dahlquist, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, is a co-founder and president of DLA Architects. As a LEED-accredited professional, DLA’s director of sustainability, and co-founder of the Fox Valley Branch of the U.S. Green Building Council, he has been a leader in DLA’s commitment to green and sustainable design. Through his and his partners’ leadership, DLA was named the Distinguished Architectural Firm in the State of Illinois, by AIA Illinois, a Council of the American Institute of Architects.

Dahlquist is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana with a Bachelor of Architecture and a Master of Architecture degree. He maintains architectural and interior design licenses in many states, including Illinois. He has always maintained an interest in preservation. He was co-founder and past chairman of the Elgin Heritage Commission, past president of the

Illinois Association of Historic Preservation Commissions, and a member of the Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council, where he helped select buildings in Illinois for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

Another of his interests is teaching. Dahlquist has taught at all grade levels from pre-K through higher education and beyond. In school district U-46, he served as the architect in residence, as part of an Illinois Arts Council program. Other interests include golfing, fishing, and photography.

Over the years, he has also served on many local commissions and advisory boards. He was formerly the Rotarian of the Year for the Elgin Breakfast Rotary Club and currently serves on the Provena St. Joseph Hospital Foundation Board.

He lives with his wife, Peggy, in South Elgin.

Elgin Community College administrators, faculty, and staff continue to make a difference in their community—both inside and outside the college—through gifts to the ECC Foundation and the United Way. ECC employees pledged more than $61,000 during both fundraising drives.

The more than $49,000 raised for the ECC Foundation will support student scholarships, ECC programs, and the foundation mission. Nearly $12,500 raised for the United Way of Elgin will help the organization fund programs that provide services to the community, homework help and mentoring to students, and resources for the elderly and disabled.

When asked “Why do you support the ECC Employee Giving Campaign?” many employees shared the sentiments of Patti Jachowicz, EdD, counselor/professor in the Student Services Division.

“I consistently support the ECC Employee Giving Campaign without hesitation because a scholarship can mean the difference between success and disappointment for many ECC students,” she says. “In my work

as a counselor I see firsthand how financial hardship can wear down the human spirit and impede a student’s ability to stay on course. A scholarship award sends the message that ‘you are valued and we believe you will realize your dreams at ECC’”.

She continues, “Students from all walks of life need financial support from time to time. I’m particularly concerned about students who diversify our campus, yet do not have access to traditional funding resources for higher education and struggle to meet their educational goals. I give because I can.”

eCC Alliance for College ReadinessSince 2006, the ECC Alliance for College Readiness has been driving positive change in Community College District 509. The number of the district’s high school graduates who are completely college-ready increased from less than 24 percent to 32 percent since the alliance’s inception.

“Being ready for college helps these students avoid developmental coursework and the tuition and fees associated with that,” says Julie Schaid, PhD, ECC’s associate dean of college readiness and school partnerships.

The alliance, which is composed of more than 250 teachers, other educational leaders, and community members from ECC and public school districts U-46, 300, 301, and 303, has been noticed by experts in the field of college readiness. A University of Illinois at Chicago professor was impressed to see elementary, middle school, and high school teachers collaborating with ECC administrators and faculty to develop ways to help students succeed in science.

“A concept where college faculty work with K-12 faculty, like ECC’s Alliance for College Readiness, is not common”, James Pellegrino, PhD, told more than 100 area science educators and alliance members during an alliance meeting in December.

Pellegrino’s appearance was hosted by the alliance’s science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) faculty team. He said it is critical for educators of all levels to address this issue to help students taking developmental classes. “Hopefully through this partnership you will help spur that dialogue along,” Pellegrino said.

Illinois Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon was also impressed with the college’s alliance. During a visit to ECC in September 2011, Simon remarked that though she had heard of similar programs in Illinois, there were none that compared with ECC’s ability to prepare students in three weeks.

“The Summer Bridge Program needs to be shouted from the mountaintops,” said Simon.
