SS7G11 The student will explain the impact of location, climate, physical characteristics, distribution of natural resources, and population distribution on Southern and Eastern Asia.

a. Describe the impact climate and location has on population distribution in Southern and Eastern Asia.

b. Describe how the mountain, desert, and water features of Southern and Eastern Asia have affected the population in terms of where people live, the types of work they do, and how they travel.

Climate-the temperature and rainfall of a location over a long period of time.

Monsoon-seasonal winds that bring heavy rains that often cause flooding and destruction.

Typhoon-the name for hurricanes in the Pacific.

Natural resource-something provided in nature that people need and can use (not man-made)

CLIMATECLIMATEWhat affects climate?• Oceans, mountains, deserts, latitude, and wind

patternsMountains=cold, snowy climate, deserts=hot, dry

climateThese regions will generally have low populations.High populations in areas with mild temperatures

and moderate rainfall. The higher the latitude, the closer you are to the

poles (cold climate)The lower the latitude, the closer you are to the

Equator (hot climate)

Climate map of AsiaClimate map of Asia

JAPAN and THE KOREASJAPAN and THE KOREASClimate is affected by • Ocean currents (warm from the south, cold from the

north)• Monsoons and typhoons • Latitude: 30°-45°N (Jacksonville, FL-30,

Minneapolis, MN-45)• Mountains in Japan and North Korea• So how would you describe the climate here?• Colder in North Korea and northern Japan, warmer

and more rain in South Korea and southern Japan

INDIA and CHINAINDIA and CHINAClimate affected by:• Mountains (Himalayas) and deserts (Gobi and

Taklimakan)• Monsoons • India has more coastline• Latitude of India: 8°-35°N• Latitude of China: 20°-50°N• So how would you describe the climate here?• Overall, India is warmer and gets more rain, but

China’s climate more diverse because it is so big and has more physical features.

VIETNAM AND INDONESIAVIETNAM AND INDONESIA

• Ocean currents greatly affect Indonesia (islands), bringing warm ocean air/water

• No mountains or deserts

• Monsoons and typhoons

• Latitude: 20°S-20°N

• So how would you describe the climate here?

• Very hot and tropical

So how does this affect the So how does this affect the population of Asia?population of Asia?

Essential Question- What is the impact of climate and location on population distribution in Southern and Eastern Asia?

To answer this question, first tell me this…Population high or low? Climate Location-hot dry -desert-cold snowy -mountains-moderate temperatures -riversand rain -coastal regions

AnswerAnswerClimate affects population distribution by

increasing population in areas with moderate temperatures and rainfall and decreasing population in areas that are hot and dry or cold and snowy. It is too hard to farm and water is not readily available.

Location affects population distribution by increasing population in regions of lower elevation with rivers and/or near the coast, and decreasing population in mountainous or desert regions. It is too hard to farm and water is not readily available.

Physical featuresPhysical features

• Physical features, such as rivers, mountains, and deserts affect where people live, what type of work they do, and how they travel.

• Rivers-provide water for irrigation (farming), trade, and transportation.

• Deserts and mountains make traveling difficult and farming is not usually an option.

• Which feature would have a higher population?

Natural resourcesNatural resources

• Examples: fresh water, rich soil, coal, and oil (made by mother nature, not man)

• Populations will generally be higher where the resources are found as they provide work (farming, mining, or drilling)

• The lack of natural resources makes a country rely on trade and human skill to supply needs.

JAPAN and THE KOREASJAPAN and THE KOREAS• No deserts here, but mountains cover Japan

and North Korea• Japan also has volcanoes and more

earthquakes that any other place in the world, but very little natural resources

• North Korea has coal and other minerals and rivers for hydroelectric power.

• South Korea is less mountainous and has excellent farmland.

• There are many large cities in Japan and South Korea

INDIA and CHINAINDIA and CHINA• Himalayas and deserts limit population,

but there is more temperate, flatland (because these countries have bigger land areas)

• Ganges, Huang He and Yangtze River valleys provide excellent farmland

• Hydroelectric power provided to China by the Three Gorges Dam.

• Both countries have coal and other natural resources
