2017 HAS BEEN A YEAR OF GROWTH AND CHANGE AT ALBERTINA KERR

The 6,000 square foot expansion of our Child Crisis Psychiatric Care Facility, made possible by our Community Promise Campaign, enabled a more than 20% increase in care for children and teens experiencing a mental health crisis this past year. 2017 saw the opening of two new group homes, increasing our number of homes serving children and adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) to 51 and increasing the number of children and adults living in our homes to 230.We similarly saw significant growth in our Outpatient Mental Health Services for children and teens as well as our Employment and Community Integration Services for adults with IDD.

Words cannot adequately express our gratitude for the generous support which has made this growth possible. After months of research and reflection, our leadership and staff adopted a new strategic plan in October 2017. We are thrilled with the prospect of bringing this plan to fruition over the next four years for the benefit of the people we serve.Central to the plan will be to build a thriving workforce at Albertina Kerr. We know that a strong, stable workforce is essential to provide the highest quality of care to the vulnerable people we serve. Additional strategic objectives stemming from the plan include continued strengthening of the quality of our programming, ensuring financial stability in an evolving political and economic landscape, and expanding public awareness of our mission. We look forward to sharing new initiatives arising from the plan as they are crafted in early 2018. Stay tuned! As we reflect on 2017, we are grateful to our extraordinary staff members, board leadership, partners and supporters for making all our progress possible. We look forward to 2018 and beyond with anticipation for all we will accomplish to strengthen our work to benefit the people we serve, as well as the broader Oregon and regional community.

ON BEHALF OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND FOUNDATION TRUSTEES

As we reflect on the 110 year history of Albertina Kerr Centers and the many families who find answers and care through programs thoughtfully delivered by dedicated staff, we are grateful for the longstanding trust of the community, the extraordinary support of donors, the knowledge and compassion of our service providers and staff leaders and, of course, the many volunteers who collectively make our work possible. We are fortunate to have many “Angels” in the form of committed front-line staff, corporate partners, individual donors, passionate Board Members and Trustees and many others helping us face the challenges of delivering the highest quality of care possible resulting in life-changing, and often life-saving, work.We are proud of the significant growth in services made possible again this year by our Community Promise Campaign’s expansion of Albertina Kerr’s Child Crisis Psychiatric Care Facility. Thank you to all who so generously supported this campaign. We have carefully crafted a new strategic plan and are excited by the promise that the new plan offers for the deepening and growth of our work over the coming years. Through its implementation, we believe that Albertina Kerr will greatly expand its role as a leader in the interrelated fields of mental health and intellectual and developmental disabilities. It has been an honor to serve again as Board and Foundation Trustee Chairs. And it is an honor to pass this privilege and responsibility to our esteemed colleagues, David Boxberger, Chair of the Board of Directors and Miki Herman, Chair of the Foundation Board of Trustees. Thank you both for your tireless work, past and future. With gratitude,

John Thoma Mary Lago 2016–17 Chair 2016–17 Chair Board of Directors Foundation Trustees

2016–2017 HIGHLIGHTS

ADVOCACY

Albertina Kerr is proud to serve as a leading voice for improving the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities across Oregon. In 2017, our advocacy efforts contributed to a 5% increase in wages for Oregon’s Direct Support Professionals (DSPs). DSPs serve on the front line in providing high-quality care to children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Higher DSP wages lead to a more stable workforce and higher quality care for vulnerable Oregonians.

ADAPTIVE BIKETOWN

In the summer of 2017, Albertina Kerr launched Adaptive Biketown at Kerr Bikes in partnership with the Portland Bureau of Transportation, Nike and Different Spokes. The program is designed to expand access to the health benefits of cycling to people with disabilities. This is the nation’s first project of its kind providing adaptive bike access through a partnership between a local government, a bike share program and a private bike shop.

“This opened up a whole new world for me to explore Portland, spend time with friends and get exercise. I feel so lucky this is in Portland!” —Adaptive Biketown customer.

PROJECT SEARCH

This year, Albertina Kerr’s Project SEARCH graduated a total of fifteen interns from our three programs at Embassy Suites, Kaiser Westside Medical Center and Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center. At year end, twelve of those graduates are working in integrated jobs in the community and all are making at least a minimum wage and working at least 20 hours a week. Due to the continued success of this program, we will open two new Project SEARCH sites in the upcoming year.

LEAN IMPLEMENTATION

2017 marks the first year of Albertina Kerr’s implementation of LEAN, a continuous process improvement approach designed to improve operations quality and efficiency by encouraging innovation and leadership on the part of front line staff and those in management. Early implementation results have been promising and roll out of the program continues across the organization.

The $11 million Community Promise Campaign has readied Albertina Kerr to fulfill its promise to another era of Oregon’s most vulnerable children. In May 2016, we formally dedicated the Albertina Kerr Campus, a $6.5 million investment, bringing together leading practitioners, critical programs and community-based mental health services for children throughout the state of Oregon.

In the two years since expanding the Child Crisis Psychiatric Care Facility and renovating the Louise Building as a hub for children’s mental health, we have increased the utilization rate and number of children served in these programs.

The campaign has raised more than $6.3 million of the $6.5 million investment needed to renovate Albertina Kerr’s Gresham Campus.

To ensure that Albertina Kerr will be here for Oregonians for generations to come, the Legacy Phase seeks to raise $4.5 million in planned gift commitments by growing Kerr’s Guardian Angel Society to 100. As of January 2017, the Legacy phase has recorded more than $4.4 million in planned gifts and has grown Kerr’s Guardian Angel Society from 48 to 90 members.

Combined the Community Promise Campaign has raised more than $10.7 million towards our $11 million goal.
