IMPORTANT NOTICE

I need to inform our community that Astrid Zegers, a member of our parent community, was involved in a serious motorcycle accident on Monday. Astrid is in hospital in Melbourne and will undergo surgery today. I will inform the School Community when the family expects to return to Bendigo and will let you know of any support we can provide. Our thoughts are with Astrid and her family, especially Jazmin and Jett.

Habit of Mind: Never give Up We continue to stress to students how important it is to keep on trying, not just for the satisfaction of eventually achieving success (which WILL happen!) but for the resilience that is fostered through failing and getting back up again.

MOTHERS’ DAY BREAKFAST AND STALL—FRIDAY 11TH MAY

Congratulations to the JSC on hosting a wonderful Mothers’ Day breakfast and to everyone involved in our very successful Mothers’ Day Stall. These events provide a valuable service to our students and help to create our culture— while the fundraising aspect is never the first priority for these events, it’s an added bonus when they also help to raise funds for the school. Well done everyone!

GRADE 5-6 PRODUCTION

Two performances of “The Amazing Adventures of Superstan.” will be held next Tuesday 22nd May at 12.00pm and 7.00pm. Rehearsals are well underway and last night an additional after-school rehearsal was held. Thanks to Karen Rees for collecting the pizzas for dinner and to Erin Malone and Kelly Effenberg for their tireless efforts to meet the performance deadline. Mrs. Malone and Ms. Effenberg are working hard to streamline rehearsals to ensure minimal impact on the formal learning program. It’s important that students are learning their lines at home so that they’re ready to go when rehearsals are scheduled.

GRANDPARENTS/VIP DAY—23/5

We’re hoping to see lots of grandparents and special friends next Wednesday. Invitations have been sent home and I’m aware of many grandparents who are travelling to come and attend this special day. You’re welcome to stay on during the lunch break and invite guests to bring along some lunch or a snack to share. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided.

DIVISIONAL CROSS-COUNTRY

Congratulations to all of our qualifying students in Years 3-6. The event has been re-scheduled and will take place on Wednesday 23/5/2018 at Epsom Sports Ground.

REPORTS + STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES

This year, we will be trialling “Student Led Conferences” following the distribution of Semester One reports, to foster student voice and ownership of their learning. Parents will receive Semester One Reports on Monday 25th June. At student-led conferences, students will share their Semester One goals and work samples. There will be an opportunity at the end of the conference to discuss any concerns with the teacher. Similar to our local secondary colleges, students’ final full day of classes will be on Thursday 28th June. On Friday 29th June, students will attend school at their allocated conference time. Conference bookings will be via the SENTRAL portal and will be available at the following times:

Thursday 28th June—4.00-8.00pm Friday 29th June—9.00-2.30pm

Bookings will open on Sentral on Tuesday 19th June. OSHC will be available on Friday 29th June, 7.00am-6.00pm if there are 10+ bookings

SSG MEETINGS—NEW DATE

For students currently on Individual Learning Plans, we will be holding our Term Two Student Support Group Meetings during Week 10, 18-22 June. This will ensure the most up-to-date assessments can be discussed and plans adapted accordingly for Term Three. Bookings will open on SENTRAL on Monday 4/6.

HEADLICE

We are determined to stamp out headlice at Lockwood Primary School. Checks were undertaken last week with the expectation that infestations will be treated at home. Children who had eggs or live lice present at the inspection, will be re-checked to ensure the treatment has been effective. Please re-treat children NOW.

NAPLAN ASSESSMENTS

NAPLAN tests students in Grade 3,5, 7 and 9 in all states and territories in Australia. Lockwood PS has been a Pilot School for NAPLAN online for the last five years and in 2018, the assessment will be undertaken on students’ laptops. This week, Grade 3 and 5 students are required to leave their laptops, charger and headphones at school for NAPLAN testing. Please see me with any queries or concerns.

LIBRARY HELPERS

We’re in need of a team of parents who can spend 15 minutes tidying up the library at the end of each day. It would mean arriving a little earlier for pick up. If you can help, please add your name to the sheet on the library door. Thanks!

DRUM LESSONS RESUME FOR 2018

Dave Dewar is available for drum lessons again this year. Dave is a very experienced music teacher and charges $20 for a 30 minute 1:1 drum lesson. The school provides the drum kit. Please see the office if you wish to enrol for lessons, starting next week.

MARIMEKKO EXHIBITION

As part of their art appreciation studies, students in Grade 4-6 will visit the textiles exhibition and participate in a workshop on Thursday, 31st May. Letters have been sent home and need to be returned with payment of $5.00 per student by 28/5/2018.

PLEASE UPDATE STUDENT MEDICAL PLANS

We have several students with asthma, allergies and other medical conditions who have outdated plans on file. These documents need to be updated by parents in consultation with their GP every year. Please provide an updated plan asap.

LOCKWOOD PS PLAYGROUP

Trina Kiel runs a playgroup for pre-school children every Friday, 9.00-11.00am. It’s a lovely environment and gives children a chance to interact while participating in fun and engaging activities with other pre-schoolers. Bookings are not required. Just come along, bring your pre-schooler and, while they play, share a cuppa with other parents. All local families , including Lockwood PS. are welcome to use this facility.

THE CHILD SAFE STANDARDS

School Council reviewed our Child Safe Policies related to the standards at its first meeting of 2018. Child Safe Standard 1 requires schools to plan, implement and review strategies that will embed a culture of child safety, including through effective leadership arrangements. Child Safe Standard 2 requires schools to develop and publicly communicate a Statement of Commitment to child safety or a school child safe policy. Lockwood PS’s Statement of Commitment to child safety helps raise awareness about the importance of child safety in the school and the community and affirms our commitment to child safety and expectations. Child Safe Standard 3 is our Child Safety Code of Conduct which lists behaviours that are acceptable and those that are unacceptable. It identifies professional boundaries, ethical behaviour and how to avoid or manage difficult situations. Child Safe Standard 4 requires schools to use policies and procedures for recruitment, supervision, training and managing performance that support a child safe school environment. Child Safety Standard 5 outlines the procedures for responding to and reporting suspected child abuse. Child Safe Standard 6 requires schools to develop, implement, monitor and evaluate risk management strategies to ensure child safety in school environments. Child Safe Standard 7 requires schools to develop strategies to deliver appropriate education about standards of behaviour for students attending the school, healthy and respectful relationships (including sexuality), resilience, child abuse awareness and prevention.
