LVX-TV signed on the air — for three hours (!) — on March 25, 1968.

When summer vacation ended later that year, an additional six hours of

live, black and white instruction classes for school children was added to

the daily schedule. In 1971, PBS began providing a national all-day pro-

gram service, but charged annual fees to local stations. To meet this cost and to pro-

vide marketing support for these new services, the Friends of Channel 10 was founded

by a group of dedicated community volunteers led by the indefatigable Charlotte Hill.

The new nonprofit group assumed a major fundraising role for our public television sta-

tion by helping to secure funds for local productions and the annual programming dues

to PBS. ‘Friends of 10’ hosted the first televised auction raising $35,000 for the sta-

tion and establishing a solid foundation of financial support that has driven our educa-

tional, cultural and public affairs community impact for five decades.

In 1999,The Friends of Channel 10 restructured and was renamed Southern Nevada

Public Television (SNPT) as they launched a capital campaign to fund the digital tele-

vision transition and the construction of what is now the Vegas PBS Educational

Technology Campus. Today, SNPT functions with numerous mission-based councils

staffed by dedicated Vegas PBS volunteers and supporters, including a Community

Council that creates special station events and projects, a Government Affairs Council

that assists with strategic legislative communications, a Planned Giving Council that

provides free estate planning seminars and secures legacy gifts for the station, and

a Desert Meadows Area Health Education Council that provides health education pro-

grams for the community. They work closely with our FCC educational licensees on

the Clark County School District board.

As Vegas PBS celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year, our success as a public serv-

ice media organization would not have been possible without the strong foundation cre-

ated by the non-profit board members. The founders would never have imagined the

growth of the organization to include today’s multi-cast and cable channels, internet

services, online courses, or mobile phone apps. Their steadfast focus on securing indi-

vidual donations, leveraging member and corporate support, and hosting fundraising

events was instrumental to each of the milestones and technology innovations we’ve

achieved together. From launching local series like News Night, Nevada Week in

Review and Outdoor Nevada or powerful documentaries like The Test, Restoration

Neon or African Americans:The Las Vegas Experience, the board has helped fund and

promote education broadcasts and outreach services that are available for everyone

across our Southern Nevada community.

Today this board consists of 21 board members representing a wide range of busi-

ness sectors and community organizations. A new slate of officers elected during the

January meeting has begun their term and will continue to plot a course for the excit-

ing next half-century that follows. Please see page 19 for a complete photo listing of

our current board members.

The board may have a new name today, but they will always be treasured “friends”

of the station.

Europe in the Desert / February 14Austrian property developer Josef Kleindienst has a

dream — to transform six barren sand islands poking out

of the Persian Gulf into the most luxurious holiday desti-

nation on earth. His plans are ambitious and costly. He’s

spending tens of millions of dollars to re-create the

essence of Europe across six artificial islands located 2.5

miles off the coast of Dubai. His six-million-square-foot

resort will feature 14 hotels and 42 private residences, and

will accommodate up to 16,000 people at any one time.

The Floating House / February 21Living beneath the waves has long been a science fiction

fantasy, but architect Marco Bolzoni’s team in Dubai is try-

ing to make it a reality. Above the waterline, it promises

two floors of ultra-luxurious living space. Downstairs is

another world. The floating Seahorse hopes to offer the

first underwater bedroom, complete with coral garden. If

his calculations are not spot on, he could find himself and

his multi-million dollar villa in deep water.

Learn about the creation of some of the world’s most

ambitious and technologically advanced buildings. From

subaquatic homes to futuristic towers and pencil thin sky-

scrapers, see how these previously impossible structures

are taking shape.

The Scorpion Tower / February 7In the heart of downtown Miami, a skyscraper like no

other is rising. The brainchild of superstar architect Dame

Zaha Hadid, the Scorpion Tower features an insect-like

external skeleton where the supporting columns are on the

outside of the building. The curvaceous design is so radical,

construction experts have turned to a building material

never before used in skyscraper construction. As the build-

ing work begins, the entire workforce is rocked by the sud-

den death of Hadid. Determined to complete the tower as

a legacy to one of the most extraordinary architects in a

generation, the team must now rewrite the rulebook as

they take the pioneering building material to new heights.

...the entire workforce is rockedby the sudden death of Hadid.”“

egas PBS is dedicated to providing engaging educational opportunities for children

in Southern Nevada, to extend learning beyond the broadcast. We are excited to

hold our 2018 PBS KIDS Writers Contest this spring. With this event, we celebrate

the creativity of Southern Nevada kids and encourage a love for art by promoting

hands-on, interactive learning experiences. Children grades K-5 are encouraged to submit origi-

nal stories with illustrations to Vegas PBS.The top three winners in each grade level will be hon-

ored at a recognition ceremony at Vegas PBS in which the awardees will learn their placements.

Prizes include a trophy, framed enlargements of their work and additional reading and writing

resources, all sponsored by Janice Allen. First place winners will also receive a scholarship to

attend the Southern Nevada Writing Project’s Summer Youth Writing Camp. More information

can be found at VegasPBS.org/writers-contest.

Vegas PBS also fosters a passion for creativity through the television programs we offer.

Joining our Vegas PBS KIDS lineup on Monday, February 19, is Pinkalicious & Peterrific, a

new animated series that encourages preschool-age children to explore the arts and spark

creativity in the areas of music, dance and visual arts.

Based on the best-selling HarperCollins Pinkalicious book series by Victoria Kann,

Pinkalicious & Peterrific follows the adventures of Pinkalicious and her brother Peter.

Pinkalicious imagines creative possibili-

ties everywhere she looks. She is an

artist at heart — and, like most creative

people, she sees the world differently

from others. She knows what she likes,

and she’s not afraid to express herself —

though she sometimes needs help from

her brother, Peter, and her neighborhood

friends. Full episodes and clips of Pinkalicious & Peterrific will be available across PBS KIDS’

streaming video platforms, including the PBS KIDS Video app, and will be paired with related

games at pbskids.org and on the PBS KIDS Games app.

The benefits of integrating videos and games is grounded in research showing that the com-

bination leads to better learning outcomes for kids. We are excited to report the launch of

“phase one” of a new game integration feature on the Vegas PBS KIDS 24/7 livestream. This

new feature promotes related games at the end of select shows. Integrated games will launch

initially on the PBS KIDS Video iOS and Android mobile apps. Links to these games will initial-

ly appear in four PBS KIDS shows: Dinosaur Train, Nature Cat,Wild Kratts and Odd Squad. If

a child or parent clicks on the “Play Now” button presented at the end of the program, they will

be taken to that game in the PBS KIDS Games app where learning opportunities will continue

beyond the show.

Vegas PBS will continue to innovate and provide enhanced learning experiences that inspire

families and educators throughout 2018 and beyond.

We’ll Meet AgainTuesdays at 8 p.m.The tides of history can disrupt lives, throwing strangers together or

tearing loved ones apart. Through moving personal stories of hope,

courage and love, this series brings together people whose lives inter-

sected at pivotal moments. Executive produced and reported by Ann

Curry, each episode reveals the powerful bonds forged among people

who now, against the odds, have the chance to reunite with someone

who transformed their life. The stories range from a Vietnam War baby

desperate to find the American father she last saw 40 years ago to the

military chaplain who helped a stranger through the trauma of 9/11;

from a Japanese-American

girl interned in 1942 who

never forgot the classmate

who helped her during her

darkest hours to civil rights

workers whose lives were

forever changed by the deep

relationships they formed in

the 1960s South. Repeats

# MeToo, Now What?Fridays, February 2 - March 2 at 8:30 p.m.This timely series goes beyond the headlines about sexual harassment to ask

how we got here and how we move forward. In the current moment, when

sexual harassment is at the forefront of the national conversation, the

series aims to take the discussion to another level, engaging both women

and men from all generations and walks of life in dialogue about these diffi-

cult issues. With the goal of making sense of these tumultuous times, the

series seeks to answer this: How did we get here and how can we use this

moment to effect positive and lasting change?

2018 Varsity QuizMondays at 7:30 p.m. beginning February 5Presented over twelve weeks, this fast-paced series is an academic quiz show

for Las Vegas high schools featuring the best and brightest students from

across the city. The competing high school teams field questions based on

their knowledge of subjects such as history, literature, math and science. A

partnership between Clark County School District (CCSD), Vegas PBS and

the Kiwanis Club of Las Vegas, the program is entering the 49th season.

Scholarship awards are made to the top four teams and the Harvey N.

Dondero All-Star Player. This award, which is named after a distinguished

CCSD administrator, was instituted 25 years ago to recognize the student

who best exemplifies academic achievement, leadership and sportsmanship.

Please support our young scholars in their pursuit of excellence!

NOVA: Great Escape at DunkirkWednesday, February 14 at 9 p.m.As France fell to the German armies in May 1940, 300,000 Allied troops were

trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk. Their annihilation seemed certain - a disaster

that could have led to Britain's surrender. But then, in a last-minute rescue dram-

atized in Christopher Nolan's recent film, Royal Navy ships and a flotilla of tiny

civilian boats evacuated hundreds of thousands of soldiers to safety across the

Channel. Now, NOVA follows a team of archaeologists, historians, and divers as

they recover the remains of ships, planes, and personal effects lost during the epic

operation. With access to previously classified files, they also uncover the truth

behind the myths of Dunkirk - notably, a claim that the Royal Air Force failed to

protect the stranded men from the Luftwaffe's constant bombing of the beaches.

Independent Lens: WinnieSunday, February 11 at 11 p.m.Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is one of the most misunderstood and intriguing

of contemporary female political figures. Her rise and seeming fall from

grace bear the hallmarks of epic tragedy. While her husband Nelson Mandela

was jailed for 27 years,Winnie lived a tumultuous life far

from the safety of exile abroad. She came to symbolize

the oppression of her people, and during the long years in

which the African National Congress languished in exile

and incarceration, her fearlessness incited them to get

organized. She was the barometer for the political tem-

perature of the country and willingly brushed patriarchal

and conservative conventions aside. This special explores

her life and contribution to the

struggle to bring down apartheid

from the inside, with intimate

insight from Winnie herself, those

who were closest to her and the

enemies who sought to extinguish

her radical capacity to shake up

the order of things.

been living for 30 years with a bullet in his lodged in his heart,

put there by an unknown shooter. It’s caused him to live care-

fully for three decades – too carefully, perhaps. He now

decides to throw caution to the wind and live with gusto,

embarking on a second career of investigating miscarriages of

justice and old cases with hidden loose ends. He's ready to

tackle new stories, eat good food again and reconnect with the

love of his life. Repeats same days at 9 p.m.
